From President Mike Hallen
T
hank you to all who participated in what I regard as a successful “Committee Meeting” last Wednesday when a number of matters of interest to the membership were explained and comments received from the members present. It was a very useful meeting with much pertinent feedback received from the floor. Of particular interest was the update on the “Run for the Hills” project and the “Warren Bowden Scholarship”. Community Service Director, Mike Blair, received useful information that he can now use to plan these two significant projects. As I mentioned on the night, your written comments will be much appreciated. Both of these events are in the early planning stages and all constructive input will considered. Terry O’Mara spoke about the “Electronic Payment System Trial” report (due on 31st March, 2016) and International Chairman Phil Davis spoke regarding the possibility of providing assistance to Fiji after the recent cyclone. Hannibal Shabaz has now received an update from Peter Drysdale (ROTAHOMES) in Fiji and we shall be following up as appropriate once we know if and how we may be of assistance. We also heard from Mike Blair that he recommends holding “Run for the Hills” at Bella Vista Farm (instead of Heritage Park) during the Orange Blossom Festival. It was well regarded and Mike will be following up. Rod Williamson updated us on the arrangements for the next “Business Networking Meeting” that was scheduled for 27th April. Following discussions with the Council this event has now been deferred to a date to be fixed in late May or June 2016. The Council is very supportive of this initiative. We shall be handing over the new deck to the Green family on the 8th April at 4:30pm, followed by a BBQ prepared by the Green family. Please let Mike Blair know before 6th April if you are able to attend. More information is available from Mike. Tonight we welcome Faye Yarroll who will speak to us about “The gift of Hearing”. PLEASE DO NOT PAT HER ASSISTANCE DOG. Yours in Rotary
President Mike

system; The system attracts some fixed costs, ie, a one off $150 set up fee payable by the Club, plus a 2% commission charge on each transaction payable by the individual. The system is very transportable provided a mobile phone service is available, this means it could be used on other projects like garage sales, Tour de Hills, Run for the Hills etc. Secure service to members through Pay Pal. Convenient for the Clubs Treasurer, less banking etc. If additional terminals are required, there would be additional costs, it is unlikely this will be necessary.
Mike thanked all in attendance and pointed out Terry requested any member wishing to add adthat our membership is now 28 persons, howev- ditional points should do so asap to enable their er he was pleased to see a good attendance for input to be included in his report. this Club Business meeting. – PP Terry O’Mara
Approximately 12 months ago it was agreed to trial an electronic payment system through Pay Pal to assist members with payment of monies to the Club, it is now time for Terry to report to the Club’s Board the results of the trial period so a decision can be reached whether to continue or abandon the electronic system.
International Service – Phil Davis.
Phil spoke on the recent devastation caused by the cyclone in Fiji, while the Rotahomes remain undamaged, there is still many areas of serious concern. Phil asked Hannibal Shabaz to contact Peter Drysdale a Rotarian involved with the Rotahomes project in Fiji and is awaiting Peters reply regarding what assistance our Club may be Terry outlined the following points regarding the able to provide. 6
Club Service – Mike Blair For many past years Neil Todd has been our Clubs organiser for the Rotary Bowelscan program, Neil has indicated that he would like to retire graciously and find a new chief. Friend of Rotary Terry Ireland has indicated he would take over the program and we thank him for his offer, Terry will require help for those few weeks when the program is in full swing and will be calling for support from members, please support him. Mike has now arranged the official handover and ribbon cutting event for the Green Family’s Deck program, this will occur on Friday 8th April at 4 PM and all members are required to attend, the address is 40 Kentwell St, Baulkham Hills (off Seven Hills Rd) ie last house on right.
Run for the Hills Our Club is still waiting on the outcome of the Coroner’s report on the 2014 Tour de Hills fatal accident and it is most unlikely we will be continuing with the event in the future. T de H was the main money raising project for our Club for 20 years. Our Club has now been approached by The Hills News to take over the “Run for the Hills” project, an 8 klm run through the streets of Castle Hill during the Orange Blossom festival in spring. Should the Club decide to run (no pun intended) with this event, it will require a lot of work by all members to take ownership of the project. Mike has been advised that the Domain costs (internet web site) for both the “T de H” and “Run for the Hills” are due for renewal and decisions need to made now on which direction the Club should proceed.
Originally the Run for the Hills was planned to take place in Heritage Park, however due to the lack of parking and the size of land available, Mike feels a move to Bella Vista Farm would be a better alternative as the property size is twice that of Heritage Park and a much improved parking facility. It is envisaged to run the 8 klm event during the spring, coinciding with the Orange Blossom program of events, hopefully Bella Vista Farm will be available. Items that require members input include; Additional items to be run during the day ie Food, attractions for children etc. Design of the course, seek help from Athletics Clubs like “Hash House Harriers” would be a starting point. Sponsorship by trade houses, The Hills Council, The Hills News etc, always a difficult task. Liaise with The Hills Shire Council (David Walker) for assistance to run the event. Runners to arrange personal sponsorship similar to T de H.. Provide a number of classes for runners, ie elite athletes and casual runners. Elite runners require electronic timing which is very expensive. Is there a need to provide food for runners similar to the T de H event? Complete event to be run within the grounds of Bella Vista Farm. It is early days and Mike would be happy to receive suggestions from Club members, but he stressed, he and his committee (M Blair, T O’Mara, C Dunwell, B Allen, P Dunn, J Cooper, G Duffy, R Danam) cannot organise the event and will require all members to take ownership and get involved. Lets fill the nail gun inbox with ide7
