From President Mike Hallen
A
nother fun night at the movies last week at which $1300 was raise towards the fight to end polio. “Eddie the Eagle” was and is an inspiration. Thanks to all who attended.
David Sommerlad is currently in rehab at the old Baulkham Hills Private hospital following a bout of lung trouble that saw him in the San hospital for some time. Arrangements are progressing for our planned Civic reception with The Hills Shire Council on 8th June 2016. Mike Blair arranged a meeting at which Mike, Rod Williamson and I discussed the event with Tara Farr, a Council Senior Events Officer. The Council will prepare invitations with joint letterheads to send up to 300 business people and others in the anticipation of receiving between 100 and 150 positive responses. Partners will be included in the invitation. If you have any suggested attendees, please let Rod, Mike or me know so that we can ensure an invitation is sent. The second “Business Networking Evening” will be a cocktail party Civic Reception held in the foyer of the new Council building at 3 Columbia Court, Baulkham Hills. It is anticipated that the Council will fund the event. The Mayor will speak followed by a few words from me about Rotary International that will include the “End Polio Now” campaign and reference to the work we have been doing in the local community. It will also be possible to hear about the new council building and tour at least the Council Chamber. We also took the opportunity to ask about our planned “Run for the Hills” event that will replace the “Tour de Hills” (still no word from the Coroner). It is currently planned to be held during the Orange Blossom Festival at Bella Vista Farm, probably during the weekend of 11/12 September. Mike Blair and his committee will be meeting soon to plan the event. Our club changeover meeting is scheduled for Wednesday 29th June. The cost per person will be $45 and a free drink is included together with a special 2-course meal. I hope you are all planning to join me as we welcome President Chris Dunwell and his team and say thanks to the current board This week we are in the hands of Guest Speaker Program Chairman, Ross Hood, who will no doubt have something special in mind as we approach Anzac Day. Yours in Rotary
President Mike 2

would like to say thank you to everyone at Rotary for the fantastic deck that they have built for us" said Scott green at recent event at castle Hill Rotary Club to thank all those who had assisted in the provision of funds, materials and labour to construct a new deck at his house in Baulkham Hills.

The community Service Director of the Rotary Club of Castle Hill, Mike Blair, who is also a builder , accepted the challenge on behalf of the members and after discussions with the Green family a design solution was agreed and mike set to work seeking materials at prices we could only imagine. His contacts produced all the materials and with a donation of $2000 from the rotary Club of sydney. Work commenced in January 2016- just in time for a heatwave. "Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy." ~ Benjamin Franklin WARNING: The consumption of alcohol is a major factor in dancing like a banana. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer. Oh, I grant you that the wheel was also a fine invention, but the wheel does not go nearly as well with pizza." ~ Dave Barry WARNING: The consumption of alcohol may cause you to tell your friends over and over again that you love them!
On Alcohol
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ To some it's a six-pack, to me it's a Support Group. Salvation in a can! ~Dave Howell WARNING: The consumption of alcohol may make you think you can logically converse with members of the opposite sex without spitting. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ And saving the best for last, as explained by Cliff Clavin, of Cheers. One afternoon at Cheers, Cliff Clavin was explaining the Buffalo Theory to his buddy Norm. Here's how it went:
n o i t p m u s n o C
"Well ya see, Norm, it's like this. A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers." WARNING: The consumption of alcohol may make you think you are whispering when you are not. 4
Terry Ireland has indeed joined Neil Todd in the Bowel Care program this year to gain an understanding of what is involved and will take over from Neil from next year. (A big “thanks” to Neil for his untiring efforts in recent years!). It was decided that the club cupboard at Castle Hill Country Club need to be cleaned out and anything necessary for long term retention to be transferred to the Storage King unit. Geoff Duffy has volunteered with the assistance of Mike Blair (who knows the Storage King entry codes). The cupboard should then only contain items neces-
sary for our normal weekly meetings and be much more manageable. Mike Blair is continuing with the planning for the Warren Bowden Scholarship and we hope to have the processes and procedures in place in time for the next Rotary year. “Run for the Hills” is planned during the Orange Blossom Festival and will be held at Bella Vista Farm probably on the weekend of 11/12 September. Another committee for Mike Blair to manage.
O
ur club has a strong tradition of supporting The Rotary Foundation and much of that support comes from members’ personal contributions. In the main, we do this through the Centurion program which asks members to contribute $100 a year for as long as they are able to. That relates to a contribution of $1.92 a week but the power of that $100 is enormous. $100 can buy 100 polio vaccines and that will stop 100 children contracting this disease. The really scary part of all this is that 5% of children who contract polio will die
from it so the $100 you give is saving lives each and every year. I think we should send a message to the rest of the world and that message is that we care and we are prepared to do something about it. 100% of our membership committing to the Centurion program would send the right message and it just might encourage other clubs to do likewise.
