From President Mike Hallen

W

e recycled everything last week! We began by convening the postponed EGM to vote on the 2013-2014 audited accounts and our guest speaker, Bert Meyer, then regaled us with tales of recycled shopping bags and other soft plastics.

I also took great pleasure in winning the white wine in the raffle and I am working on a recycling program for the contents. The Resolution to receive and accept the 2013-2014 audited accounts so that Treasurer Bruce Allen may now comply with the requirements of the NSW Department of Fair Trading was passed unanimously. Better late than never. Now for the 2014-2015 accounts! The invitations for the Hills Shire Council Civic Reception on 8th June will have been mailed on Friday 13th May and should reach you soon if not already in your letter box. Please note the RSVP details and date (25 May 2016). In this bulletin there is also a notice regarding the D9685 Changeover on 25 th June at the Hornsby RSL Club. Please join us to celebrate DG Gina Growden and DGE Bruce Lakin as they celebrate the Rotary year just passed and the Rotary year ahead. We are joined tonight by the” boy from the bush” and editor of our bulletin, Anil de Silva, fresh from his holiday in Tasmania. WELCOME BACK ANIL! Hopefully he will bring Nirosha with him so we will get to hear the true story of their Tasmanian escapades. That’s right – he was too busy enjoying himself to edit this bulletin – hence its poor quality. Bernard Chandra will speak to us tonight about “aphasia”. This is probably a new word in our lexicon and a small article about this condition is included in this bulletin for your information

A

phasia is an impairment of language, affecting the production or comprehension of speech and the ability to read or write. Aphasia is always due to injury to the brainmost commonly from a stroke, particularly in older individuals. But brain injuries resulting in aphasia may also arise from head trauma, from brain tumours, or from infections. Aphasia can be so severe as to make communication with the patient almost impossible, or it can be very mild. It may affect mainly a single aspect of language use, such as the ability to retrieve the names of objects, or the ability to put words together into sentences, or the ability to read. More commonly, however, multiple aspects of communication are impaired, while some channels remain accessible for a limited exchange of information. It is the job of the professional to determine the amount of function available in each of the channels for the comprehension of language, and to assess the possibility that treatment might enhance the use of the channels that are available. June is National Aphasia Awareness month. Aphasia in a language disability related to a stroke that affects the ability to communicate. He will be well worth coming to hear

THIS WEEK’S ROTARY FOUNDATION THOUGHT is about why we support our Foundation. Every minute of every day someone's life is being improved by our Rotary Foundation. Rotary clubs on every continent are working to improve the living conditions and health of their fellow citizens. Rotarians like you and me can make a difference by continually supporting our Foundation and the Annual Programs Fund. As Rotarians we determine where funds are allocated through District Designated Funds, which we can use for local projects or matching grants in another country. When we contribute to our Foundation we are promoting worldwide Peace and Understanding. Only if Every Rotarian Every Year makes a gift to the Annual Programs Fund will we will be able to continue to do the great work of The Rotary Foundation. 7

Notes of the Castle Hill Rotary Club Meeting 11th May 2016

P

resident Mike Hallen opened the meeting by announcing that an Extraordinary General Meeting was now in session. The meeting opened at 7.01 pm.

The special resolution before the meeting, held over form the previous meeting, was the that the Audited Financial Accounts of the Club for the Financial Year 2013/2014 be adopted for passing to the appropriate authorities. This was proposed by President Mike Hallen, seconded by PE Chris Dunwell, and passed unanimously by those present. There being no other issues under the banner of the EGM, the meeting was officially closed at 7.03 pm. The meeting then proceeded as a normal club meeting. President Mike welcomed the guest speaker for the meeting, Bert Meyer. Members were reminded of the District changeover meeting on 26 June which will be held at the Hornsby RSL. Please consider attending. Registrations are available on-line on the District website. People were advised that the published calendar in the bulleting is somewhat misleading. 18 & 25 May, 1 and 22 June there will be a guest speaker. On 8 June we will be attending the Civic Reception at the Hills Shire Council Chambers hosted by the Mayor. the Club Assembly and EGM will be on 15 June and the Club Changeover will be on 29 June. The Club Changeover will be attended by Superintendent Rob Critchlow of the Local area Command, Aileen Mountfield and her partner, of the Lisa Harnum Foundation and the John Given who helped to fund the Green family deck project. Treasurer Bruce Allen advised members that on 18 May there will be no eftpos system available as the incoming Treasurer will be on his own for the first time due to Bruce’s absence. He also reminded people that making a centurion contribution in May is beneficial to the club as Rotary International agreed a favourable exchange rate through May and the Aussie has been falling this month. Rodd Hood, Youth Director, reminded members that he and Chris Dunwell were signed up to assist at MUNA this weekend. Ross could not attend on Saturday morning and Peter Marcer agreed to stand in for Ross during that first session.

The guest speaker next week will speak on Aphasia. This is a condition which affect a person’s ability to use language and comes about through acquired brain injury. This can occur as a result of an accident or an illness including strokes. As many club members are advancing in years it might be of particular interest as strokes are more common among older people. President Mike advised that he had spoken with David Sommerlad in the past week who was on good form. He hopes at some time in the near future to visit the club although he is excused. Please feel free to call him but if you intend to visit please clear this with Joan before hand. David Rands is now home from the Ryde Rehab centre and has a modified car and some home modifications which should allow him considerable freedom and mobility. He will be the incoming District Foundation Chair and part of the RLI team. The sergeant session was held as usual. The Raffle was won by Chris Dunwell (red) and Mike Hallen (white). Bob Chary then introduced the guest speaker, Bert Meyer. Bert’s topic for the meeting was the recycling of plastics. Bert is an employee of a major recycling business, REPLAS, and therefore has an excellent understanding of the nature of the business. He brought with him several examples of products that have been made from recycled plastics , many of which most people might be unaware can be and are made from recycled plastics. The plastics used in recycling are from ‘soft’ plastics which belong to the family of products made from polyethylene’s and polypropylenes. Therefore they are made from soft drink bottles but not from the caps of those bottles which are ‘hard’ plastics. Soft plastics also include plastic bags of various sorts used for shopping and garbage etc. Products that can be made include decking, bollards, fences, benches, pool surrounds etc. Many are used instead of wood as they have properties which wood does not. The generally don't fade, don't rot and can themselves be recycled. Most plastics can be recycled up to 10 times. Bert sowed two short videos to demonstrate how plastics are recycled and some of the products which are made from them. It takes a great many plastic bags to make recycled products. One bollard or 1.5m height requires 3,500 plastics bags to produce it. So the more bags we recycle the better for the environment as those not recycled end up in landfill. In answer to questions from the floor he noted that plastic will melt and will burn but is non-toxic, unlike some treated woods. Bert was thanked for his most interesting presentation and the meeting closed with the singing of the national anthem. 10

Last Week Meeting It seems that Plastic bags are valuable for more than just bringing home the shopping and Bert Meyer told us just how many are recycled into useful plastic items. Chairman Bob Chary and Bert Meyer seemed happy enough after the event. The question is just how many plastic bags does it take to……………?
