From President Mike Hallen

It was a great pleasure to welcome back Anil de Silva (even for a brief visit). He was en-route from his holiday in Tasmania with Nirosha and called in to see us on the way back to the red dust in Cobar. I should also mention that while he was on holiday he produced yet another excellent bulletin from bits and pieces that he was able to download via some rather inefficient internet connections. It was also fantastic to hear that Anil will continue to produce the for Chris Dunwell. The deep sigh of relief was from Bob Chary who was in the frame to do it! Our Guest Speaker Panel broadened our knowledge of Aphasia (from the Greek apathos - “a” = not; “pathos” = speech). Colleen Kerr introduced the topic. Colleen has been Director of Optimal Speech Pathology for fifteen years and has spent more than thirty years working with people with Aphasia. Colleen dreams of a time in Australia in which a person with Aphasia can be confident that their messages will be

heard. She then introduced the other two speakers, Rotarians Sean O’Brien and Bernard Chandra, both of whom suffer from aphasia. They were both inspiring speakers. I have just returned from the final President’s meeting for the year that was held at Hornsby RSL club this morning starting at 8:00am. I only mention this because on behalf of Community Service Director, Mike Blair, I had applied for a district award for our community service efforts this year. We were unsuccessful (Gosford North won the shield). All I can say is that there must be some excellent community service projects being done in D9685 and that we congratulate Gosford North for their efforts. I had also applied for an RI Significant Achievement Award for our community service efforts this year – again without success. But at least we will have been noticed! Neither application would have been possible without the efforts and support of our members and I am thankful for that. We have had a positive impact on our local community and should be proud to speak about our Community Service projects at the Civic reception on 8th June. Don’t be shy! Rhett Butler is our Guest Speaker this week and he will be talking about “Sustainable Water Solutions, Chaired by PDG Bruce Allen. Yours in Rotary

President Mike

Board Report 9th May 16 The first joint board meeting with the new board was held on 9th May. The major points are described below: The donation list for this year was approved and Treasurer Bruce Allen has all the appropriate contact details to initiate the process. Funds from the Rotary Club of Castle Hill Foundation account will be used to make the $1000 donation to the “End Polio Now” campaign. In Hannibal Shabaz’s absence in San Jose we have heard nothing more about Rotahomes in Fiji after the cyclone. Invitations to the Mayor’s Civic Reception on 8th June were due to be despatched by the Civic Events team at Council on Friday 13th May 2016. There will be and EGM in conjunction with the Club Assembly on 15th June to consider some proposed changes to our club bylaws. An article and photo on the Green Deck has been delivered to RDU magazine by secretary Geoff Duffy and should appear in an upcoming issue. Signatories to the club accounts are in the process of being updated with St George Bank in preparation for next Rotary year. We are in the process of gathering information about the Trustees for the “Castle Hill Rotary Foundation” to determine who they are and if they need to be updated. The Foundation was included on the Australian Business Register on 1 January 2005. A garage sale has been arranged to sell material that has been donated by the family of Warren Bowden. The funds raised will, be used to support the “Warren Bowden Scholarship”. The “Run for the Hills” project is under control and Community Service Director, Mike Blair, has held a meeting of the committee to progress the planning for the inaugural event as part of the “Orange Blossom Festival on the weekend of 10/11 September 2016.

Extraordinary General Meeting - JUNE 15th 2016. Notice is given that on 15th June 2016, an extraordinary general meeting to be held prior to the Club Assembly. The purpose of this meeting is for the members to consider and adopt recommended changes to the club bylaws. Copies of the recommended changes are available from President-Elect Chris Dunwell or Secretary Geoff Duffy for any member wishing to peruse them prior to the EGM. On behalf of the Board, PP Geoff Duffy - Secretary 3

THIS WEEK’S ROTARY FOUNDATION THOUGHT is about The founder of The Rotary Foundation, Arch C. Klumph A member of the Rotary Club of Cleveland, Ohio, USA, Arch C. Klumph served as the RI president in the 1913-14 Rotary year. In 1917, Klumph declared that “we should accept endowments for the purpose of doing good in the world in charitable, educational, and other avenues of community service.” His vision and a contribution of US$26.50 left over from the RI Convention helped to establish the charitable and humanitarian arm of our organization, The Rotary Foundation. Due to the hard work and generosity of Rotarians worldwide, The Rotary Foundation has improved lives for nearly 100 years. With ongoing financial support, our Foundation will continue to carry on Klumph’s dream well into our second century of service.

Notes of the Castle Hill Rotary Club Meeting 18th May 2016 by Chris Dunwell

P

resident Mike Hallen opened the meeting with news of recent events affecting some members. As these are deemed confidential they are not noted in this report.

Mike reminded members of the Lisa Harnum Foundation Dinner at the Castle Hill RSL on 4 June. Although the cost is quite high - $120 per person – the proceeds will go towards funding a full time counsellor who will work with the women and their families to assist them to transition to independent living. The Civic Reception will be on 8 June and all should by now have received their invitations which have been sent by the Shire Council. The theme is helping to build business and community giving. Members of the Hills Business Chamber have been invited plus others from local businesses. Mike reminded members to take their badges with them and to engage with all the non Rotarians and talk to them about their interests and where the opportunity exists to invite them to visit our club and experience Rotary. Asking them to join Rotary might frighten them off but inviting them to experience Rotary might not.

M

ike welcomed Anil back to Castle Hill from his long term assignment in Cobar. He noted that, based on the newspaper articles forwarded to us, Anil is the most important person in the country. (No way—far from it! - Editor) despite this, Anil has never failed to meet the deadline of producing the weekly meeting report. Even for this evening a report is on the tables despite the fact that Anil has been on vacation in Tasmania. So although his physical presence has not been with us, never-theless he has been an active member of the club throughout his time in Cobar. To recognise his wonderful contribution despite the kilometres between Cobar and Castle Hill Mike presented Anil with a Paul Harris fellow. The pin has a sapphire given that Anil already has a PHF.

9

Anil expressed his humility at receiving this award from the Club. He advised that he had intended to have a break in the next Rotary year but now he feels that he must carry on! He remembered couple of years back in the very cold winter morning waiting to work on the Red Shield appeal with David Sommerlad and realising how dedicated David was to Rotary. Perhaps David’s fine example has rubbed off on Anil himself.

M Anil presenting the banner he received from Cobar Rotary Club to President Mike Hallen

ike noted that the Show Society has cancelled the Show and so this will once again impact on our revenues by a further $7,000 or so. Of course it will provide some relief for Phil Dunn who will not have the burden of organising the event but we must look to other means of raising funds if we are to complete good projects in the coming year. PE Chris Dunwell asked all members to put their thinking caps on as to how we can raise funds to complete projects in the future. All ideas can be passed to PP Mike Blair and Chris.

PP Mike Blair advised the meeting that a couple of meetings have been held to continue planning for the Run for the Hills event which we will run in September this year to coincide with the Orange Blossom Festival. We are still seeking a major sponsor as the Australian Brewery, the major sponsor for the Tour de Hills in recent years, cannot offer this although they can offer other services. Mike also advised that he and Phil Dunn and Terry O’Mara will visit Warren Bowden’s old home to go through his stuff in the garages and sheds on the property. There will be a garage sale on 18 June and members are asked to please help on the day and for some help on the two preceding days . The items will generally appeal to builders and renovators as it is mostly timber and building supplies.

M

ike then handed over to the Chair who introduced the guest speakers, all of whom are members of the local support group for the sufferers of APHASIA.

Colleen Kerr, who is a speech pathologist, opened the presentation by giving the meeting a run down of the ways in which Aphasia is contracted – these are many. From Strokes, from brain injuries as a result of accidents, from brain injuries as a result of other medical conditions and from certain types of dementia. Aphasia affects the language centres of the brain but manifests itself in different ways with different people. Some have affected speech and articulation, struggling to find words they know well but cannot vocalise. Some have trouble with written language whether reading or writing. 10

However the intellect is not affected at all. Therefore although outward appearances might suggest otherwise, sufferers remain and bright and intelligent people, just as they were before the condition took its toll. One of the challenges is that it is little known. A quick poll of members demonstrated this. Very few if any knew of Aphasia before the meeting, but all know of Parkinson’s Disease. However there are more sufferers of Aphasia than there are of Parkinson’s.

C

olleen introduced her colleagues. Firstly Sean O’Brien who is a sufferer and struggles sometimes to find the words he is seeking to express himself. This caused him to give up his membership of Rotary. But he has maintained his interest in restoring vintage cars. He told us that he uses an IPAD to help express himself as he can point to the things he wants to communicate. He admits to getting very tired and often goes to bed early these days.

B

ernard Chandra was then introduced. He was a Rotarian from 1975 to 1987 so know us well. In 2012 he had a fall and was in Westmead for 4 months, taking a long time to recover. He speech was affected and he couldn’t remember the words he was searching for, hence his speech was often confused to others. He previously held senior roles – he is a former Sales Manager. He also uses an IPAD to help with communications. Colleen advised that everyone in the local support group sounds a bit different. Most often sufferers find group situations challenging and so when speaking with them she asks that we please speak slowly and clearly and be patient while they frame their responses. They are hoping to meet every Rotary club in the district and create awareness of the condition and ask that Rotary consider them as a worthy cause to support in the future. Mike Hallen thanked all three speakers and noted that Australian Rotary Health might be able to assist in research into the condition and its effective management. The meeting then closed.
