script. I hope I got the Rotary message across! This week we are meeting as a Club AssemFrom bly with some added EGM decisions to be President made regarding the adoption of the latest Mike Hallen (2016 COL) RI Constitution as well as some additional matters in relation to updating bylaws. I can see our club changeover steaming towards me and I look forward to your attendance as we welcome Chris Dunwell to the chair on 29th June. Which means that I only have one more “Mike’s View” to prepare before the big day! There will not be a bulletin on 29th June, just the Changeover reports in a bound booklet produced by SNAP Printhe Civic Reception arranged by our Mayor, Councillor Dr Michelle ing. Byrne was a resounding success if the number of people present Yours in Rotary , and the buzz in the room was any indication. President Mike Thanks to all the members and partners who joined in the evening – it was a great turnout. The food and drink service seemed to please all those present and many conversations were held between Rotarians and the other attendees, particularly the Sydney Hills Business Chamber. I was asked to address the gathering and had some notes to use – they are included somewhere else in this bulletin I hope! Those present may recall that I did not stick to the

adam Mayor, Members of Parliament, Chairman of the Hills Business Chamber, Distinguished Guests, Rotarians, Ladies and Gentlemen
Thank you, Mayor Byrne, for initiating this excellent gathering of volunteers and business people from The Hills district. It is a privilege to be able to mix with like-minded folk in a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere. My name is Mike Hallen and I have the pleasure of being the President of the Rotary Club of Castle Hill for the next 21 days!
President Mike’s Speech at the Civic Reception The Hills Shire Council 8 June 2016
I now have a few minutes to spread the Rotary word! NO PRESSURE!
So why are we still here after 111 I would like to begin by posing a ques- years? This can be explained somewhat by the “Object tion
of Rotary”. “What is the connection between public toilets “To encourage and foster the ideal of service as in Chicago, transitional housing for domestic a basis of worthy enterprise”. violence sufferers in The Hills and a new deck and ramp for a family in Baulkham Hills?”
The answer is 111 years; and 4 Chicago businessmen seeking the acquaintance of likeminded people
Let me explain On 23 February 1905, Paul Harris, an attorney and three friends, a mining engineer, a coal dealer and a tailor, gathered in an office in downtown Chicago. This was the first Rotary club meeting. They decided to call the new club “Rotary” after the practice of rotating meeting locations. Just like the Beatles, there was a fifth Rotarian, Harry Ruggles, a printer, who joined the second meeting. Now there are
Over 1.2 million Rotarians In nearly 35000 Clubs In 169 countries and geographic areas
And so to the connection with the Chicago public toilets!
In 1907, the club called a meeting of civic organizations to establish a committee for installing city comfort stations, or public toilets, to improve sanitation - the first Rotary project. Now ,111 years later, we are still identifying and seeking to remedy needs and shortcomings.
Local projects Most recently the Rotary Club of Castle Hill has painted the interiors of two cottages at the former St Michael’s Family Centre in Baulkham Hills for the Lisa Harnum Foundation and designed and constructed a new timber deck and ramp for a Baulkham Hills family whose wheelchair-bound teenage son has an incurable form of Muscular Dystrophy. You will detect a local bias in these two projects – a focus that was intentional this year. We are locals acting locally while at the same time attending to national projects including drought and bushfire relief, and international issues. Our international efforts this past year have fo3
cussed on the elimination of Polio from our world. Only the second disease after smallpox to be eliminated as a threat to world health. It has taken since 1985 to reach a stage where only two countries are now at risk – Pakistan and Afghanistan. When Rotary began this program there were 1000 cases per day worldwide. Since 1988, 2.5 billion children have been vaccinated against polio. As of 1 June 2016, the following is the status of the campaign: Global: Total: 16 (down from 25) WPV1: - 16 (down from 25) WPV3: 0 (steady at 0)
Endemic Country Breakdown:
Importation Countries: 0 (0)
Afghanistan: 5 (up from 2) Pakistan: 11 (down from 23)
If your interests coincide with those of Rotarians, we would be delighted to invite you to be our guest at one of our regular Wednesday evening meetings at Castle Hill Country Club, just round the corner! Just leave your contact details with me or any member of my club. I would like to leave you with a short video that shows what Rotary has been doing to “End Polio Now”. It is a pleasure to be here and thank you for listening. Please enjoy the rest of the evening.

n those old days, they cooked in the kitchen with a big kettle that always hung over the fire. Every day they lit the fire and added things to the pot. They ate mostly vegetables and did not get much meat. They would eat the stew for dinner, leaving leftovers in the pot to get cold overnight, then start over the next day.

Sometimes stew had food in it that had been there for quite a while. Hence the rhyme: ''Peas porridge hot, peas porridge cold, peas porridge in the pot, nine days old''. Sometimes they could obtain pork, which made them feel quite special.
W
hen visitors came over they would hang up their bacon, to show off. It was a sign of wealth that a man could, "Bring home the bacon." They would cut off a little to share with guests and would all sit around talking and ''chew the fat''.
