President Message

Message from the President I am pleased to present Lenoir Community College’s 2011–2012 Report of the President and the Foundation showcasing our students’ achievements and our accomplishments for the past academic year. Lenoir Community College (LCC) has a rich tradition of providing quality education and services to the citizens of Lenoir, Greene, and Jones Counties. Assisting our students with the fulfillment of their dreams has always been and continues to be our top priority. Since opening its doors on April 3, 1958, Lenoir Community College has served literally hundreds of thousands of people who might not otherwise have been afforded the opportunity to pursue their educational goals. We are a beacon to our region in the area of economic development. In a time where many of our neighbors are concerned about their ability to provide the bare necessities for their families, now more than ever, community colleges are looked upon to train and retrain our workforce. This is a responsibility that we do not take

lightly. LCC continues to be on the cutting edge of technical knowledge, providing opportunities to our students and to the communities we serve. We are constantly evaluating and planning for the future by offering new courses and programs, designing and constructing new facilities, and bringing the newest innovations to our campuses. As educators, we are reminded that we are living in an age where classrooms have no walls and social networking has no boundaries. We are challenged to provide the most comprehensive selection of courses and emerging technologies to meet the demands of our current and future workforce. With our assistance, local citizens will soar beyond their greatest expectations. The College’s Board of Trustees, administration, faculty, and staff are appreciative of the overwhelming support from the communities we serve. It is because of that support that LCC continues to be a leader on the local, regional, and state levels. Our sincere desire is to aid every citizen of Lenoir, Greene, and Jones Counties with their ambitions for the future. After more than 50 years, LCC continues to be committed to providing academic excellence, cultural and social opportunities, and customized workforce training. I hope you take time to read this report and find out why we say LCC is “Your College in Your Community.”

PERFORMANCE STANDARD Required standard of performance to ensure programs and services offered by community colleges in North Carolina are of sufficient quality. The standard for each indicator of success or performance measure is a predefined level of achievement (usually a percentage) set by the North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS). Any college not meeting the standard is required to submit to the State Board of Community Colleges an action plan for improving performance.

SYSTEM AVERAGE Results for each critical success factor is provided to the NCCCS. The data is then compiled at the NCCCS Office and the system average is the average percentage achieved by all 58 community colleges for each of the eight core indicators of success.

LCC ACHIEVEMENT Results for each critical success factor is provided for Lenoir Community College.

College Highlights

2011–2012

College Highlights The Welding Technology program took a step

towards going green with its newest addition, the VRTEX 360 from Lincoln Electric. The state-of-the-art equipment makes it possible for students to train in an eco-friendly manner as well as learn welding techniques in a virtual environment. By using the VRTEX 360 Welding Simulator, students will be able to train at an accelerated rate, thus providing more time to cover other topics in the program.

Automotive Technology students have the

opportunity to train on a hybrid cutaway engine model to learn the latest in hybrid technology.

Lenoir Community College (LCC) Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) Program is one of four eastern North

Carolina Community Colleges selected to participate in the Regionally Increasing Baccalaureate Nursing programs, referred to as RIBN. In a partnership with East Carolina University (ECU), LCC’s selected RIBN students are concurrently admitted to ECU’s College of Nursing. During the four year process, RIBN students complete LCC’s ADN program by the third year, become licensed as a Registered Nurse upon successful completion of the NCLEX-RN, and then complete the Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (BSN) in the fourth year at ECU.

Upon completion of Health Science Programs, most

students are required to take a computerized national certification/registry exam. In preparing LCC’s Radiography students for the registry exam by computer, the College purchased a computer cart with laptops so students have access to computers during all program testing. The 2012 Radiography graduates pass rate on the National Registry Exam for Radiography was 100 percent.

The Associate Degree Nursing and Practical Nursing Programs 2012 graduates scored 100 percent on the NCLEX-RN and NCLEX-LPN exams respectively.

LCC’s online learning management system, Moodle 101, was implemented as a free orientation/

training course designed by Distance Education to help online learners become familiar with the most commonly used features of LCC’s online learning management system, Moodle. During the 2011-2012 academic year, 4,819 students accessed Moodle 101 to complete seven performance goals.

College Highlights

More than 280 new students preregistered to attend Lancer Orientation 2012, a two-hour orientation program

that allowed new students to visit the campus, meet their advisor, and register for classes. Lancer Online Orientation was introduced for the first time this year. It allowed students who were unable to attend orientation on campus to access information that was available during the campus orientation.

From LCC Orientation 2012 through the first five days of

class during summer semester 2012, 478 students participated in on-campus Distance Education 1-2-3 Training providing training in WebAdvisor, email, and Moodle. Training was offered during LCC Orientation 2011 as part of both student and athlete orientation.

Distance Education integrated its Datatel system with Moodle automating course creation and enrollment. This

automation speeds the placement of students and instructors in Distance Education courses during registration periods and the first days of class. It also maintains up-to-date course rosters between Datatel and Moodle giving Curriculum and Continuing Education greater efficiency in course enrollment aiding staff, faculty, and students.

The Continuing Education Division grew to become the third largest Continuing Education Division in the North Carolina Community College System.

The Continuing Education Division received a $40,000 Community Mobilization Grant from the NC Rural Center to increase training capacity for Nurse Aide I students. The TRIAGE (Training Ready Individuals and Gaining Employment) project has become a best practice model for replication across the state.
