HHRD representatives brother Ilyas Hasan Choudry, Director of Programs, and Director of International Programs brother Irfan Khurshid wrapped up their Middle East tour by visiting several towns in Lebanon, Syria and Jordon this past year by providing emergency relief and registering HHRD as an official NGO in the region.

HHRD’s Emergency Response Team registered as an official NGO in Thailand, made the necessary arrangements to assist in emergency relief needed for the record-breaking typhoon that hit Philippines. Being at the forefront of emergency relief in the region, our South East Asia team comprising of Azmat Akbar, Hasan Masoh, Asim Khan, and Arif Khalilhas provided continuous support to the victims of the 2004 Tsunami, earthquake and Typhoon.

Education Support Program Education is essential in breaking the cycle of hunger and poverty. It lays the foundation for sustained economic growth.

Education Support Program (ESP) promotes: • Literacy rate • Improves standard of education • Strengthens the education system ESP focuses on the densely populated regions of various countries with significantly low literacy rates; Bangladesh, Kenya, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan.

This project was launched in Pakistan and through educational scholarships, infrastructure development, capacity building, and youth development, HHRD was able to secure a brighter future for close to 3,000 individuals.

The Orphan Support Program (OSP) of Helping Hand helps in identifying families in needy situations. It focuses on assisting children who have lost their parents and/or guardians and enables them to fit into the society morally, spiritually, and mentally. These children are being provided with stipends sufficient enough to bear the expenses of their education and basic amenities. The younger children are taken to schools, while the older ones are taken to vocational training institutes, thus making them productive members of the society.

Launch of Children with Disabilities

HHRD’s “Children With Disabilities Program” aims to highlight the plight of disabled children and bring them to the forefront through inclusive education and social participation making them self reliant and contributing members of society. Children between the ages of 1 and 18 have one or more of the following disabilities: hearing, visual, physical, intellectual, or multiple disabilities.

The launch of the website allows donors to look at profiles of disabled children that includes their age, gender, disability and demographics.

Persons with Disabilities

Through it’s Physical Rehabilitation Program, HHRD aims to offer Persons with Disabilities (PWD) the opportunity to become equal members of society through empowerment and socio-economic services. Support will be provided to overcome occupational constraints through treatment, training, skills development and micro enterprise development.

Mother Child Care HHRD works across the continuum of care applying evidence-based interventions at the right times: before and during pregnancy, delivery, postpartum, newborn, and childhood. The focus on extending services to families close to where they live through community-based approaches is central to many HHRD programs.

In cities such as these, it is imperative that a health service be offered to underdeveloped and impoverished communities to ensure the safety and well-being of its people. HHRD initiated Health care services in the District Jafferabad in the month of November 2010 in response to devastation caused by floods.

Initial setup of Field Hospitals, were in customized tents each consisting of a doctor, dispenser, a lady health visitor, traditional birth attendant and community mobilizer whom provided health care services So far two doctors served in this center where 4 successful deliveries were conducted in 2011 and 17 successful deliveries this year alone.

HHRD provides health services in four areas of concentration: mother and child health care, mobile health clinic, eye surgery, and long term patient care.

Focusing on the most vulnerable portion of population, recently HHRD has setup more than ten (10) Mother Child Healthcare Centers (MCHCs) in flood affected areas of Pakistan. More than 300, 000 patients have been treated so far (until June 2011) and more than $235,000 worth of medicines has been administered.

At our Mother Child Health Clinics HHRD was able to provide consultations to 5,250 mothers and perform 283 successful deliveries.

Due to the aftermath of monsoon rains and flooding the threat of airborne disease has increased; HHRD gave 3,006 vaccinations the most vulnerable citizens in Pakistan. Raising awareness of the necessity of proper hygiene and regular checkups is part of prevention as well.

AFRICA: Isiolo county is a largely populated area with permanent residents and internally displaced people who are living in huts or temporary shelters. The average distance to the nearest health facility is 50 km. Strikingly, HIV/ AIDS prevalence in the district stands at 15%. This was the main reason for HHRD to Initiate for their health services here and has benefited 138,070 individuals.

Skills Development Program

This program is designed for socio-economical development and the hopes to eradicate poverty amongst the most neglected segment of society by providing them employable skills, facilitation for home based income generating activities and developing market linkages.

HHRD has established community based Skill Development Centers for imparting trainings in different employable skills for females of vulnerable communities of Pakistan and Azaaad Jamu Kashmir. HHRD is working to convert all the SDCS into Industrial Homes forming groups of women artisans in each SDC to promote the concept of "one village one product".

In Kenya and Somalia, there were a total of 200 beneficiaries graduated after receiving training in computers, as well as tailoring and embroidery.

This past year alone HHRD was able to help close to 11,346 beneficiaries by establishing 27 Skill Development Centers, creating 6 Industrial homes, establishing 5 Institutes of Technical Education and opening 3 Shop N’Help stores in the USA and Pakistan.

All products come through HHRD's Skills Development program which economically empowers people living in poverty. Every product is handmade in one of our skills development centers around the world.

Esaar Micro-Finance Program

This program is facilitating and supporting livelihood opportunities and microenterprise development for those in need. Donations allow for interest free loans for the poor, unemployed and widows. For those who are in difficult situations, these loans help them get back on their feet and become a contributing member of society. That family uses that money to start a small business or buy a sewing machine for example that will become a source of livelihood for them.

Interest-free loans have shown a repayment rate of 99.8%. The cycle continues and it becomes a form a Sadaqa–e-Jariya.

“This is a totally self-sustained program where contributions are needed for new businesses and expansion of the program."

Since the program began in 2010, EMF has directly benefited 10,297 with a total of $2.4 million in loans. Working in 26 districts of Pakistan, HHRD distributed $1.3 million in loans, directly benefiting 4,130 families this year. On average the monthly income of a family increased by Rs. 5,000-6,000 and 22 field offices around the country were established.

In-Kind Gifts Program At the onset of any disaster relief effort, HHRD regional In-Kind Gift Centers in nine states initiate In-Kind Gift campaigns and drives for the specific needs of the affected countries. In-Kind Gifts are donated goods and services rather than monetary donations. After the relief phase is over, In-Kind team coordinates with local teams to generate wish lists for Rehabilitation and Reconstruction phase.

Since the start of the program in 2008, our partners have donated some 245 Containers worth $49.27 Million to HHRD in USA. These containers had food, non-food and medical supplies and equipment for the poor and needy around the world.

Since the beginning of 2013, our program was able to send 121, 40-Feet Large Containers with over $26.4 Million worth of items.

Many corporations offer a matching gifts program to their employees. HHRD is registered as a matching gift partner with most of these corporations.

How much donation is matched?

This amount varies from company to company. Some companies match an equal amount and some companies pay half of the donated amount.

You can ask your company’s HR Department. Some companies have a dedicated “Matching Gifts Department", Sometimes '[Company Name] Giving", etc. If you are having difficulty with this, please declare your company name while submitting your donation to HHRD. We can inquire on your behalf from your employer to complete the matching gift transaction.

WATER FOR LIFE Improves access to clean drinking water through installation of hand pumps, water filtration plants, construction of tube-wells, water wells, water storage tanks, and water supply schemes to meet basic and livelihood needs.

Seasonal Programs

HHRD seasonal programs such as Eid ul Adha’s Udhiyah meat distribution has helped a quarter of a million people across the globe.

Water And Sanitation Hygiene (WASH):

25% of the country was affected during Pakistan Floods. Water borne diseases were rampant and there is shortage of clean drinking water in many Union Councils. WASH ensures safe drinking water as per standards set by the Union Council across Pakistan.

Likewise, Udhiyah,Ramadan Iftar Food and Fitra packages allowed for the distribution of $900,000 in over 40 countries allowing those less fortunate to feel the essence of these blessed months.

Moreover, HHRD hopes to create awareness about proper sanitation, and hygiene practices and to construct proper sanitation amenities. Access to clean drinking water is critical to achieve Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Summer Internship The Student Internship Program (SIP) at Helping Hand for Relief and Development provides an opportunity to spend the summer working with some of the most dedicated relief workers. SIP will also provide a unique opportunity to gain valuable professional experience and build leadership skills. This hands-on program is designed to mentor and cultivate today’s young leaders in an environment devoted exclusively to the field of social services.

Youth for Haiti

This year Helping Hand for Relief and Development Youth for Haiti Program was a memorable one, as HHRD’s President/CEO, Dr. Farrukh Raza, visited Haiti.

Alhamdulilah, this year’s program was the most attended program thus far.

Dr. Farrukh Raza was joined by Dr. Danish Saeed, who returned to Haiti after his first visit to Haiti with HHRD during 2010 earthquake HHRD relief efforts.

This year we had seven brothers along with Omar Regan (Brother’s Batch Mentor) and 15 sisters with YazThe Spaz & Nadonna (Sister’s Batch Mentors).

The projects for this year included computer lab, painting and teaching children at Islamic school, medical clinic - 700 plus patients were seen through Helping Hand mobile clinic, fed 1000 people including 700 children and spend a day with HHRD sponsored orphans & made check distribution to orphans guardians in the amount of over $48,000.

By the Grace of Allah we were able to successfully show our youth the true meaning of Muslims for Humanity by serving all in need irrespective of their religious belief, race and color. For many of our youth this was life changing experience that they will perish rest of their lives.

EMERGENCY RELIEF HHRD is currently providing much needed emergency relief in the countries of Africa, the Middle East, Burma and Pakistan.

Each is facing a type of internal conflict, which in turn is jeopardizing the safety and health of its people.

Pakistan

Rocked by two major earthquakes, 185,000

people have been affected in the province of Baluchistan. HHRD was able to provide 2,600 families with food, 100 families with shelter, 2,460 patients with medical assistance, 9,500 families with meat distribution, 250 children to partake in Eid celebrations and much more.

Close to 90,000 beneficiaries were provided with emergency relief.

Thar Drought

For decades, Thar Pakistan has faced periodic famines and droughts. Thar needs some permanent solutions. After the one month of ER efforts, HHRD teams are doing several water Projects in Thar. Your generous support is needed this Ramadan.

Central Africa Affects of Horn of Africa

Drought of 2011 are still being felt, and HHRD Africa Teams in Kenya, Somalia, SomaliLand, Tanzania, & Uganda are assisting humanity with your continuous assistance. Then volatility in Central African Republic, Mali, South Africa, and elsewhere have resulted in thousands of displaced refugees, with HHRD Teams working diligently to serve the humanity in dire needs. Philippines:

HHRD and the Health Organization of

Mindanao (HOM) collaborated to provide emergency relief to families affected in Northern Cebu specifically in Bogo City and in Malapascua Island. Emergency relief packages consisting of Food and Non-Food items were distributed to 795 families (approximately 3577 individuals). Each family received good packages consisting of rice, sardines, noodles, biscuits, bread, sugar, drinking water, fruits as well as clothes. A total of 1,600 individuals were given clean drinking water bottles and clothes, 500 children received candies and biscuits, two health and hygiene sessions were conducted and 7,311 individuals benefited from HHRD medical camps.

BURMA

Burma’s history has been marked by one of the longest running civil wars between ethnic groups. More importantly, 800,000 Rohingya Muslims have been persecuted, discriminated and faced massacres for the past 70 years.

HHRD launched its “Burmese Relief Fund” and joined hands with partner agencies in Yangoon, Burma. As a result, more than 1,500 families received food rations in tow locations, Eid ul Adha Udhiya was performed and HHRD assissted Burmese refugees living in India and Thailand.

The Middle East (Syria, Palestine, Jordan, & Egypt)

HHRD representatives Br. Ilyas Hasan Choudry (Director

of Programs, and Director of International Programs) AND brother Irfan Khurshid began their Middle East tour by visiting several towns in Lebanon, Syria and Jordon this past year to provide emergency relief.

At "The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA)" School For Boys at the Jerash Camp in Jordan, HHRD was able to distribute school bags to 150 female and 100 male elementary school students. Each bag included notebooks, pencils, drawing notebooks, erasers, sharpeners, wooden colors, waxy colors, skills note, sandwich bags, geometry tools, and working clay.

The HHRD team was able to distribute monthly food and hygiene Items to more than 200 Syrian guests in AlMufraq Jordan. The HHRD Team visited several Syrian children living in the Beqaa Valley of Lebanon. Many of these children were orphans from Homs and Damascus.
