GLOBAL SKILLS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM A sustainable means of livelihood in communities where families are in dire need for financial support are developed by establishing Skills Development Centers (SDCs), Industrial Homes (IHs), and Institutes of Industrial Technical Education (IITEs) all of which are designed for the socio-economic development of people, especially women, from vulnerable and disaster hit communities. HHRD currently provides training to men and women in 6 countries. These centers set out to impart training, organize artisans, assist in specializing products, improving product quality and then marketing these handicrafts.

We have helped 400 people in Jordan, 150 in Somalia, 130 in Afghanistan, 2,570 in Pakistan, 250 in Nepal and 650 in Kenya this year alone.

SEASONAL PROGRAM This program allows marginalized families to enjoy the celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha with the ability to share a warm meal together. Through Ramadan food packages, gifts on Eid-ul-Fitr and meat on Eid-ul-Adha, Muslims across the globe partake in the festivities. In total, HHRD performed the Udhiya of 4,338 goats and 8,197 cows, which allowed 12,585 shares to be distributed in 40 countries. Alhumdulillah, 50,000 families (which included 20,000 orphans and widows) were able to enjoy the blessings of Eid-ul-Adha. This program provided food packages, based on local prices, for families in 38 countries and regions. People from Tanzania to Myanmar, Jordan to Nepal, and everywhere in between were met with smiling faces and gifted food items to last the month.

HHRD Jordan's Annual Ramadan Tent served Iftar to 80 families, averaging about 400 individuals per day. HELPING HAND FOR RELIEF AND DEVELOPMENT

IN-KIND GIFTS PROGRAM In-Kind Gifts are donated goods and services rather than monetary donations. This program has been saving and enhancing lives of hundreds and thousands of people since 2008. Donated items are collected in warehouses across the USA. They are then sorted, packed, inventoried and loaded into 40 foot containers by volunteers, shipped to their destinations, cleared at ports, transported to international warehouses, and finally distributed to HHRD beneficiaries. The total time from the container being shipped to the written report after distribution to beneficiaries takes 6 months. In 2017 HHRD sent 175 containers worth $29.2 million benefitting 3,245,400 people in Pakistan, Lebanon, Jordan, Kenya, Somalia and Tanzania. Since 2010, 18 US regions with 18 US partner companies have helped people in 21 countries through a total of 781 containers worth $131 million.

WATER FOR LIFE WATER & SANITATION HYGIENE An estimated 790 million people are without access to improved water supply worldwide. Lack of safe drinking water leads to malnutrition, water borne diseases, devastation to livestock and in many cases--death. HHRD helps people gain access to clean water for daily consumption and irrigation purposes through construction and rehabilitation of water supply schemes. Depending on the geological conditions of an area, the whole process takes about six to twelve months after the patrons give their donations. This program is fully operational in Afghanistan, Kenya, Pakistan, Somalia, Tanzania, Uganda and Nepal where it has improved access to clean drinking water to more than a million people over the course of 7 years.

HHRDNews MATCHING GIFTS PROGRAM A Matching Gift Donation is a donation made to a non-profit organization, which is tied to separate contribution by another donor. Since the prospect of a matching gift encourages donations, many companies offer matching gift programs to motivate their employees to make contributions to non-profit organizations. The matching gift could be dollar-for-dollar or a Partial Match. Sometimes the matching gifts can be multiples of the original donations. Contact your HR representative to find out if your donation to HHRD can be matched.

A study of employee giving programs shows that 65% of Fortune 500 companies offer matching gift programs and 40% offer volunteer hour match programs.

Water for Life is tailored towards supporting poor, drought affected, displaced people, and host communities by providing access to clean drinking water through construction of shallow wells and distribution of soaps from HHRD’s In-Kind Gifts program. By combining workshops and trainings, we teach people how to maintain and use water resourcefully. In 2017, thru this program 40 wells were dug which helped 50,000 people across Africa, 20 water wells capped with hand pumps helped 4,500 people in two provinces of Afghanistan, and 328 water projects which included hand pumps, filtration plants, submersible pumps storage tanks, gravity flow supply schemes, water wells, and submersible pump water generators, helped 200,000 people in Pakistan.

YOUTH EMPOWERMENT PROGRAM

E D U C AT I O N SUPPORT PROGRAM

HHRD is utilizing the ever-growing talent of youth from across the globe in immersion programs and internships to provide a unique opportunity to receive first-hand knowledge of relief work.

Education is essential in breaking the cycle of hunger and poverty. It lays the foundation for sustained economic growth. HHRD Education Support Program (ESP) promotes literacy, improves standards of education and strengthens the education systems by providing easier access to quality education in remote areas.

Three major initiatives provide youth the opportunity to work alongside professional staff to experience humanitarian work: Summer Internship Program; and week-long humanitarian trips: Youth for Jordan and Youth for Haiti. In 2017, the seventh year of the Summer Internship Program brought 58 interns to HHRD offices across 20 cities. Youth for Jordan entered its fourth year with 48 attendants in 2017 under the mentorship of Shaykh Omar Sulieman. Youth for Africa’s 2017 launch brought in 22 participants who, under the mentorship of Imam Siraj Wahhaj, visited Kenya.

These initiatives encourage and empower the minds and hearts of the future teachers, doctors, engineers and others, who will go on to influence communities, nations and ultimately, the world. Particularly, ESP focuses on densely populated countries with significantly low literacy rates; Bangladesh; Kenya; Egypt; India; Indonesia; Sri Lanka and Pakistan. Of the 775 million people who are illiterate in the world, two thirds are women. Moreover, generations are being scarred due to lack of education as 264 million children remain home from school. In many rural areas, 57 million children do not have a school to attend (Global Education Digest, 2017). This program helps communities through scholarship programs, establishing schools, and sponsoring children by providing school supplies, stipends, tutoring lessons and home visits. HHRD’s School of Excellence located in Mogadishu, Somalia provides an education to 250 orphan students between K and 4th grade. HHRD Jordan is supporting 250 students through its Family Education Support Program which was established for Syrian Refugees in 2015. HHRD’s Higher Education Support Program provides 7 students with a full 4-year scholarship to Al Zarqa University in Jordan. In Pakistan HHRD is providing educational support for students throughout 35 districts!

By donating $720/year, a child will receive: • Monthly allowance/money paid to family (toward education) • School bags & stationary • School follow up visits • Home follow up visits • Tutoring lessons (before exams) for weak subjects i.e. Math & English

EMERGENCY RELIEF 2017 Burma (Rohingya) Relief Burma (Rohingya) Relief: A silent genocide, which the United Nations calls 'textbook ethnic cleansing' is underway against the Rohingya minority in Myanmar. The country of Myanmar (Burma) is located in Southeast Asia and has been marked by one of the longest running civil wars between ethnic groups. More importantly, 1.1 million Rohingya Muslims living in the Burmese State of Rakhine have faced apartheid-like conditions since 1942. Monsoon rains threaten the 700,000 Rohingya Refugees in Cox Bazar Bangladesh. The UNHCR reports up to 85,000 refugees to be immediately affected by flooding & torrential rains. Risk of diseases, landslides and death are imminent.

HHRD helping Rohingya since 2012: Since 2012 HHRD is providing relief to Internally Displaced Persons inside Burma subject to Myanmar (Burma) authority’s permission and to Burmese Refugees in Bangladesh and Indonesia. HHRD has provided, Orphan Support, In-Kind Programs, Global Zabiha and Ramadan Food Package Distributions.

Medical Clinics HHRD is providing medical relief in Bangladesh in Rohingya Refugee Relief Camps. Doctors and assisting staff are providing medical care and medicines to refugees living in severe and unsanitary conditions which make them prone to illnesses and waterborne diseases.

Welled Water Hand Pumps There is immense need for clean water for the poor families in the Rohingya camps. Each pump provides a clean water source for 500,000 Rohingya refugees.

Shelter - $200

Food - $100 For $100, HHRD can provide an Emergency Relief Package to ease the problem of malnutrition facing so many Rohingyas. Packages include a one-month supply of lentils, potatoes, oil, spices, utensils, cookware, and hygiene items, among other basic necessities, sufficient for a family of 6.

HELPING HAND FOR RELIEF AND DEVELOPMENT

Unfortunately, due to the huge number of Rohingyas entering Bangladesh, current shelter facilities provide little security, privacy or protection from the rains and floods. HHRD Shelters provide tarpaulins and construction materials for basic shelters.

HHRD supports 500 children including Rohingya Refugees at two Childcare Centers in Cox's Bazaar HHRD's Emergency Response Team (ERT) is working in Cox Bazar Bangladesh where thousands of Rohingya Refugees have sought safety in makeshift camps due to the violence in Myanmar. Consisting mainly of women and children, these makeshift camps have become a center of disease and infection due to lack of hygienic conditions. Our ERT has reported a total of 640,000 Rohingya in Bangladesh with 429,000 having arrived since the new wave of violence in August 2017. In addition, our ERT has reported 154,000 children are facing malnourishment as 90% of Rohingya Refugees receive only one meal a day. EMERGENCY RELIEF 2017

Caribbean Hurricane Relief Measured as a category 5 hurricane, Maria hit the island of Dominica with full force leaving 15 dead and immense infrastructure damage. Many of the islands in the Caribbean were recovering from Hurricane Irma when Hurricane Maria followed suit. Puerto Rico was the strongest hit as millions struggled without food, water, and power.

Two HHRD Emergency Relief Teams (ERT) were on the ground in the Caribbean islands of St. Martin and Tortola, Dominica, as well as, Barbados to provide emergency relief items to Hurricane Irma and Maria victims. The teams were put on standby as they prepared for Hurricane Irma relief due to the development of Hurricane Maria. Our teams met with parliament officials as well as, as they assessed the damages from both hurricanes in order to provide essential relief items. HHRD has been providing relief in the Caribbean since the devastating earthquake that hit Haiti in 2010 killing over 230,000, injuring over 300,000 and displacing 1.5 million people. Syrian Refugee Crisis HHRD has been actively involved in helping the Syrian people since 2011 with the launch of its “Syria Humanitarian Assistance” fund. Internal strife and now deadly living conditions have led to an increase in refugees from Syria to the neighboring countries and beyond. Tharparkar Drought The region of Tharparkar Sindh in Pakistan has been marked by drought, famine and malnutrition. This deadly combination of famine and drought has left the people of Tharparkar in a state of anguish and despair. The lack of monsoons has caused wells to dry up leading to the destruction of crops and livestock. With all available water resources being contaminated, citizens are forced to consume undrinkable and unsafe water. HHRD’s Water for Life program implemented 83 safe drinking water projects, 40 community hand pumps, 16 submersible water pumps, 25 water wells, and 2 filtration plants. The implementation of all these projects has been successful due to coordination with our implementing Partner (IP) i.e. Alkhidmat Foundation Pakistan (AKF). These projects benefitted about 49,918 drought-affected people in famine areas of district Tharparkar.
