News you can use!

Chris Lujan Where are you from? Your hometown? I was born in Inglewood and raised in Torrance.

How many years have you worked at USC Gould and what attracted you to USC? I have worked at USC for almost 10 years now, and I have been at Gould for three of those years. I was looking to start working in IT and my wife’s uncle said he knew someone who was hiring.

What is your job title and responsibilities? What do you love most about your job? Systems Administrator 1 (User Support/Network Engineer), I split my time between Desktop Support and Network Support, including backups. I love helping people learn about new technologies. I have been working with computers since I was 11, so I understand them a little differently than most people.

What activities/hobbies do you enjoy outside work and why? I am the secretary of the world’s oldest and continuously operating amateur rocketry society, Reaction Research Society. We build and launch rockets from our test site in Mojave. I enjoy building things and getting a motor to propel a vehicle to 5000+ feet is always lots of fun.

Self Defense Classes We are coordinating efforts with DPS to bring self defense classes to the law school. There is a total of 12 hours of training, broken down into four sessions. The classes are taught by certified instructors. There will be an informational session soon that will count towards the 12 hour training. If we have enough interest, we can hold the sessions here at in the building at a time that is convenient for most. Stay tuned for more info!

It did not rain on our parade!

Staff Spectacular In early February 2017, Erma Woodard retired from her position in the Law Library. Erma had worked as a Library Assistant in the Acquisitions Department for 38 years. In her job, Erma was responsible for checking in literally thousands of journals, periodicals, and continuation titles and routing them on to their final destination. If you ever wondered how the daily newspapers got into the Staff Lounge, Faculty Lounge, and other library locations, it was Erma’s work. Erma has a daughter, Dessie Rene, and a son, Donald, and several grandchildren who will keep her very busy! No matter what was happening, Erma started her day by saying “It’s a beautiful day” and sometimes even singing a few bars of “Oh what a beautiful morning!” While the library staff is happy for Erma in her retirement and wish her the very best, we will miss her.

Farewell to Lisa Escobar Let’s bid a farewell to our friend and colleague, Lisa Escobar. She worked for USC for 40 years, and served as Director of Administrative Services for the majority of that time. Most of you who had the pleasure of working with Lisa all of these years will remember her for her rambunctious laughter. She was always willing to listen and provide good advice when you needed it. Her strong unwavering dedication to our staff, faculty and students has left an imprint on the law school’s legacy, and she will be missed! Although she no longer works here, she will remain part of our community. We wish her well in the next phase of her life.
