{Letter From The Editor}

W

ith the first snowfall already a distant memory and the holidays in full swing, I find myself reflecting on the year I’ve had. In some ways it has been an amazing year and in others it has been intensely painful. With the loss of my beautiful boy Harvey, changes in my personal life, and the amazing realization that 2013 marks the Animal Print’s 10 year anniversary, I’m thinking a great deal about the past and about how different my life has become. The one thing in life you can count on is how truly unpredictable it can be.

In the last few months I’ve begun fostering dogs again. This has proven to be both difficult and rewarding in ways I never expected. My first foster, Clay (now called Henry) arrived as a “foster to adopt.” I thought I’d be ready to find a new dog to love and with one look at his face I melted. You see, Henry looked a lot like Harvey, and ultimately I discovered that I was simply not ready. I suppose we all have some internal timetable for when our hearts are ready to love again. However, I was lucky to find Henry the home he deserves to have, and I now consider Danielle and Cliff friends for adopting my mini-Harvey and giving him an amazing new life. Since saying goodbye to Henry, I’ve fostered a number of other wonderful dogs and also found them great homes. It’s sad to see them go, but I wish everyone could experience the feeling of knowing that saving a life also gives joy to the adopters. And there just happens to be some info about this year’s “Foster A Lonely Pet” on page 10 in case you would like to have that experience as well. Inside this issue you’ll also find the yearly gift guide round-up, focusing specifically on gift ideas from small local businesses. Shop local and support our community! You will also find an amazing story about one local veteran who’s making a difference in the lives of injured soldiers, and the people who have stepped up to help him. It’s the kind of story that makes you appreciate your health and family but also understand that even though life can be unpredictable, it can also lead you to your calling if you let it. Please have a wonderful holiday, Happy New Year and enjoy the new issue! Thank You, Stephanie Georgia editor

Password Protected Chicks A new study has found that fairy-wren chicks are taught a ‘password’ by their mothers while they’re still in their eggs. This is a specific note that they must cheep in order to be given food after they hatch. It’s thought that this is a defense against nest parasites like cuckoos.

Locally and Around The Globe…

January Is National Train Your Dog Month!

The Association of Pet Dog Trainers is thrilled to celebrate National Train Your Dog Month 2013 and wants dog owners to see how simple and fun training can be, and how patience, consistency and a deeper understanding of a dog’s behavior can lead to happier, healthier and more harmonious households. It’s our goal to promote training methods that are kind, gentle, and have an emphasis on building a relationship with your dog. The APDT has over 6,000 members who are willing and able to assist dog owners who need help with their dogs. “We want dog owners everywhere to know that there are solutions to help dogs with behavior problems and there are alternatives to try before giving up your dog.”

“One of the greatest gifts we receive from dogs is the tenderness they evoke in us.”

RAWHIDE BONES CAN BE DANGEROUS FOR YOUR DOG! We know that around the holiday, many of you are filling not just your human family’s stockings but also your dogs, and we just wanted to give you the low-down on a widely available and commonly used treat - rawhide bones.

•W hen swallowed in chunks they do not digest in your dog’s body. • If they have sharp edges, they may case tears on your dog’s stomach lining. • They can cause blockages and cause your dog to choke to death. • Can contain chemicals including formaldehyde (deadly chemical) and arsenic. • May be tainted with salmonella or other bacterial contaminants. • Will stain your carpet or furniture if there is a colored flavor coating on them. • Possibly cause vomiting, seizures, diarrhea, or stomach upset. • Dogs cannot digest rawhide and there have been many pet deaths linked to blockages in their intestinal tracts or from choking. Please do your own research on the internet to check out the dangers of giving rawhide bones to your dog.

One of our favorite alternatives are deer & elk antlers. These natural antlers are gentle on tummies and do not splinter like many bones do. Of course there is always a danger of choking if a bone is too small for your dog or small pieces break off but if you monitor your dog, this is a great alternative to rawhide!

The YELLOW DOG Project

The Yellow Dog Project is a global movement for parents of dogs that need space. The brain-child of the project is dog trainer Tara Palardy, who lives in Alberta, Canada. “I had no idea that hundreds - scratch that, thousands - of people would join. I figured, some friends, some other trainers but nothing global.” There are many reasons why a dog may need space such as health issues, being in training, being rehabilitated, being scared or reactive around other dogs or recovering from surgery. The idea is that if you see a dog with a yellow ribbon or something yellow on the leash, this is a dog who needs some space. The Yellow Dog Project also hopes that through social media and physical awareness, as well as educational courses for kids and parents, we can remind people to ask before petting and owners of other dogs can recognize the signs of a dog that’s not interested. For more information on how to help promote this great project visit www.theyellowdogproject.com

Make It Merrier With One More: Foster A Lonely Pet For the This holiday season, both Petfinder and The Animal Print magazine are asking you to open your heart and home to a pet from a shelter or rescue group. Fostering a pet, whether it is a cat, dog, or small animal, grants these animals a cozy, if temporary, home. Although many shelters and animal rescue organizations celebrate the holidays with special treats for their residents, funds and space are always limited. Many local rescue organizations rely on foster families to house their pets while they find an adopter, and these organizations need help more than

ever during this bustling season. Families who foster pets make a new friend, experience pets’ unconditional love, provide a place for Santa Paws to visit (wink wink), and often save a life by opening their home for a few weeks or even days. Children who put a new pet on their wish list can practice the responsibilities that come with a pup, kitten, hamster, or whoever with a foster friend. Even better, a fostered pet is the perfect guest, uncritical and forever grateful for your hospitality. Petfinder.com recommends giving an animal the gift of a home for the holidays by fostering this month and all year, and we do too.

A New And Improved Shelter Is Coming To Town! The town North Attleboro has agreed to give the North Attleboro Animal Shelter $250,000 to begin it’s expansion project! Their new shelter dream is about to become a reality. They are currently at set up at their temporary home on High Street. The project should be complete in six months. Yay town of North Attleboro!!

s y a d i l Ho

A few groups who are often looking for fosters in RI are:

PAWS New England, Friends Of Homeless Animals, The East Greenwich Animal Protection League, Jenny’s Hope Rescue, American Lab Rescue, Handsome Dan’s Rescue, Hands That Heal RI, New England All Breed Rescue, Little Rhody Rescue, & Mutts 4 Rescue.

Please visit Petfinder.com to find their and other rescues info and apply.

Big news! Rhode Island Community Spay/Neuter Clinic is providing FREE spays/ neuters for both cats and dogs from Charlestown, Richmond and Hopkinton! This is made possible by the Friends of the Charlestown Animal Shelter, who received a grant from The Rhode Island Foundation. USA Battle Buddies Written by Katenna Jones • Cover photo by Daniel Sadlowski Editorial photos by John Jacobson

W

ith an estimated 22.7 million Veterans in the US, there is no arguing the fact that Veterans touch each of our lives. They are our grandfathers, sisters, friends and neighbors. Unfortunately, the sad reality is that many return home with mental and physical injuries and in desperate need of emotional and physical assistance during the transition back into civilian life. Specially trained service dogs can offer the ideal support that many veterans so desperately need – and deserve – after receiving injuries to the brain or spine, having lost limbs, or suffering any trauma in their service to our country.

Unfortunately, for the vast majority of US Veterans, obtaining a service dog simply isn’t an option. Such was the case for PFC Steven Frye. Retired from the US Army after being wounded by a roadside bomb in Iraq, Steve was frustrated, lost, and alone dealing with a traumatic brain injury that seriously impacted his memory and balance. He heard about service dogs working with veterans, and felt a glimmer of hope as he struggled to adapt to life after war. Sadly, that glimmer was soon extinguished when Steve learned that between the purchase of the dog, transport, training, equipment and vet care it typically costs up to $35,000 per dog. Steve gave up hope.

13

In 2010, Steve took a trip to visit his family in Newport, seeking the support of ex-military family and friends. On that trip, he serendipitously met a retired US Army K-9 trainer. Steve was inspired by her work, and worked to raise funds for the incurred costs. In response, the trainer agreed to train a dog for Steve. In time, Steve found Charlie, a beautiful shepherd about to be euthanized, and who amazingly qualified to be a perfect service dog candidate. But Steve found something more in that journey. He found his purpose again. Steve created USA Battle Buddies, a New England not for profit organization that provides assistance animals to area veterans suffering from disabilities related to their military service. He developed it into an organization and board consisting of US Marines, US Air Force and Navy retired, active and prior military personnel as well as civilian volunteers. USA Battle Buddies offers trained qualified US Justice Department/ADA Service Assistance Dogs with combat related physical disabilities for…wait for it…$1. That’s right, for $1 disabled New England Veterans have a chance to get back both their independence as well as their dignity. How can it possibly cost so little? Enter Chad Callanan, a retired Naval Officer of fifteen years. The Callanan family owns and operates the Rhode Island Animal Medical Center and Four Paws Pet Resort in Warwick, RI. Founded in 1926, Brighton Animal Hospital was a highly successful Boston veterinary hospital co-founded by stone mason and breeder P. J. Callanan. Many years and two generations later, that practice grew into several hospitals and kennels, including the cutting edge Rhode Island Animal Medical Center and Four Paws Pet Resort. Being a Veteran himself, Chad read about Battle Buddies and called Steve to learn more. He quickly became inspired and wanted to help. Though, “help” might be a bit of an understatement. The Rhode Island Animal Medical Center will literally be saving USA Battle Buddies tens of thousands of dollars by donating, covering, or fundraising for USA Battle Buddies program veterinary costs.

Steven Frye (left) Chad Callanan (right) and Charlie (front) So, here’s how USA Battle Buddies works: The first step is to find the Battle Buddy Veteran candidate. That candidate is currently Corporal Kevin Dubois, a US Marine Corps sniper. In 2011, an improvised explosive device took both of Cpl. Dubois’ Continued on page 14.

legs and nearly took his life during his second tour in Afghanistan. Despite it all, Kevin has an incredible attitude and is the ideal Veteran to represent USA Battle Buddies. “Walking is what feels more normal to me. I can’t explain it other than that,” Kevin said in a past interview. “If I can walk, that’s what I’m going to do.” A Battle Buddy K9 could very well help make life a little bit easier for Kevin. Next, and perhaps most difficult, comes the arduous task of finding the K9. Steve says the best candidates are European German Shepherd dogs, bred specifically for work, with sound bodies and temperament, with solid and reliable genetics. And, while it might seem simple to just take on a homeless pet German shepherd dog from right here in Rhode Island, things are rarely as simple as they seem. The standards for a service K9 to perform what will be required for Veterans like Cpl. Dubois are much higher than for the average pet dog. And it’s very important to remember: Battle Buddies isn’t looking for pets. They are looking for working dogs – bred, born, and trained to perform without waver, without fail. USA Battle Buddies does

Charlie, Steven Frye’s service dog. not have staff, kennels, or resources to house and adopt out a single dog that isn’t what they need. The amount of resources demands that potential K9s meet incredibly strict criteria that only a fraction of the dog population will. Once the K9 is identified and approved medically, it will live with volunteer trainer Joe Petruzzi Jr, a retiree from the US Marine Corps. By donating the

absolutely critical and extensive training each K9 will need, Joe plays an invaluable part in keeping the cost of a Battle Buddy K9 down. He will work with the dog to train it to meet the specific needs of the “buddy” Veteran; whether it be balance work, retrieval work, emotional protection, or whatever the needs may be. In a past interview, Steve said of Charlie: Continued on next page.

“He keeps me balanced. When in crowds and I start to get anxious, he helps relax me by nudging up against me and proactively nudging my hand until I start to pet him which calms me down. He gives me a sense of security when in public that my back is covered. When I have nightmares Charlie will jump on me and wake me up. When I have a flashback, Charlie will pull me away from the public and will not let anyone around me until my mind returns to the United States.”

The K9 will then live out the rest of its life with its Veteran Buddy, and USA Battle Buddies will repeat the entire process over for another Veteran. All Battle Buddy USA K9s are named in honor of a fallen brother in arms. Steve’s K9 is Sgt. Charlie Paranzino, the rank

and last name of fallen RI Army Sgt. Michael F. Paranzino, killed in 2010 by a bomb while serving in Afghanistan. The Battle Buddy K9 for Cpt. Dubois’ yet to be found K9 will also carry the rank and name of a fallen brother. In his case, Sergeant “K9” StGermain, in memory of Sgt. Brian StGermain, killed in Iraq in 2006. With just a little inspiration, and a whole lot of work, Battle Buddies is changing the lives of our Veterans who served our country. Regardless of how you feel about war, these are our brothers and sisters and they deserve our support. Let’s begin by helping Cpt. Dubois get his K9 StGermain, and find his independence. To learn more about USA Battle Buddies, to volunteer, to donate, to suggest a potential K9 candidate (European pure bred German Shepherd between the ages of 1 1/2 to 3 years old ONLY), or to simply tell Steve what a good job he’s doing, please go to www.usabattlebuddies. org or contact him at PO Box 922, Newport RI. Support the work being done at Rhode Island Animal Medical Center and Four Paws Pet Resort, or simply stop in and tell Chad “thanks.” Or, at very least, tell your friends and family about USA Battle Buddies. The Animal Print Wishes You A Wonderful Holiday And Happy New Year!

How Do I Keep My Cat Out of the Christmas Tree? Q. Help! My cat won’t leave the Christmas tree alone. How do I keep him out of the tree?

A. It’s generally best to set up the tree that your cat can’t get to it at all. With dogs, you can usually block off a tree with a fold-up children’s play yard or a canine exercise pen, but a normal cat will laugh at so feeble an attempt to contain him. Instead, set up the tree in a room with doors you can close, choosing, say, a formal living room over a more open family room, so it’s easy to deny access to the tree when you’re not around. You could also try making a “moat” of foil around the tree – cats hate walking on the stuff — but that may understandably not appeal to you as part of your holiday decor. Work to burn off your cat’s excess energy away from the tree, such as in interactive play with a cat “fishing” toy or a laser pointer. Even young cats spend most of their lives asleep, and if you can occupy some of their awake time with active play they’ll have less interest in bothering the tree. The same goes for food puzzles: The more time your cat spends working for his food, the less time he’ll be busy elsewhere. Scaring your cat away from the tree is not a good solution, though. I don’t like cat-control products that emit a shock or high-pitched noise for pets who step across boundaries, in part because cats generally react poorly to that kind of management. Stressed cats are more prone to illness and behavior problems such as litterbox avoidance, which means you could possibly “solve” a short-term problem and end up instead with a longer-term issue. Not good! If you absolutely cannot make any of these solutions work for you, you can always set your cat up with food, water, a litterbox, cat climbing tower and toys in a bedroom away from the tree for the duration of the holiday season. As long as you spend time with him, he’ll be just fine there until it’s time to take down the decorations. You may have to worry about kitty’s interest in the tree for only a year or two, since climbing the Christmas tree is a behavior more commonly seen in kittens and young cats, not more sedate older pets. In Christmas Future, you may look back with nostalgia on the crazy, young tree-climbing thing your cat once was. Courtesy of www.vetstreet.com

Max Lolly

Max (Maximilian Maxwell Maxcott Maxaranza) joined the home of Katy Westcott and Evan Sicuranza, with whom he enjoys running, snuggling, eviscerating beloved stuffed animals, snuggling, running, chasing the ocean and wearing the clothes his mother makes him. He is a friend of all pets and humans, and a scourge of fallen leaves. A lover at heart, he will nonetheless happily wrestle you for control of Lambchop. Max is a small dog with a big name and a giant’s courage, and the world will hear more from him.

We had been looking for a little while and since I had lost my dog a year ago I was still very undecided. I’d get excited to adopt and then feel a bit guilty as if I was replacing my long lost best friend, Zeus. Finally one night we saw Lolly on Petfinder. Her adorable face, black spot around her eye and profile won us immediately. She was described as a friendly, shy girl that was found homeless on the side of a country road in Arkansas with her sister. I responded immediately. She was in our arms within a week. We have had Lolly for about a month and a half. Lolly has really come out of her shell in the past couple weeks. She has a puppy best friend and already has learned to sit, fetch and walking on her lead. Lolly is a true cuddle bug, full of love, loyalty and intelligence and we feel so fortunate and happy that I chose to rescue again.

Farewell Dear Friend Written by Dr. Elizabeth Hassinger

Whether it’s a sudden onset of illness, a terrible accident, or a gradual onset of old age… the realization that a dear animal friend is near the end of life is a heartwrenching experience. When we hold them for the last time and whisper goodbye, no matter how old they may be, there will be the feeling that our friend’s life was just not long enough. Since their lives are so much shorter than our own, they must leave us long before we’re ready to say good-bye. When that time comes, it is never easy, but can be easier if we know we’ve done everything within our power to ease their transition and honor their lives.

Preparing for the end

Making final plans

It is also the time to release them and allow them the space to pass away. While we can never be certain what they are thinking, it seems to me that our pets are often so devoted to protecting and caring for us, that they may struggle to hold on for fear that they are letting us down as they pass. After all, we have asked them to be with us, to stay at our side through life, and now they may realize that they can no longer be there. At such a time, it is helpful to express to them that we will be all right. We’ve asked for their obedience, and now it is time to give them permission to wander off.

If you feel that you just cannot take your friend to the veterinary hospital to end his or her life, ask about house call services. Some veterinarians may be willing to go to your home to euthanize your pet, or at least they may refer you to a housecall practitioner. If you are considering this option, it is a good idea to make contact with the veterinarian ahead of time to establish a patient-doctor relationship. Remember, performing euthanasia is often an emotional challenge for the doctor, and there are sometimes circumstances under which a

As difficult as it is to know in advance that death is near, the saving grace comes in being able to spend quality time. Animals are incredibly sensitive to our feelings, so although it is natural that we might feel dread and sadness, it is important to remain full of positive, hopeful and healing thoughts. Each day will be a gift, and it should be celebrated by taking some extra time to enjoy the bond you share. Perhaps cooking a special meal, or driving to a place that has been a favorite destination. Our animals ask so little and give so much. This is the time when we can give back.

Sadly, most pet owners will ultimately be faced with the difficult decision to have their dear friend euthanized by a veterinarian. While it may be our wish that our friend will pass quietly in his or her sleep, this is rarely the way the end will come. Unless we are faced with an urgent crisis, there is time to consider just how to let them go. Veterinarians and their staff are generally very understanding about this process. If circumstances allow, you may wish to schedule an appointment to discuss your concerns and review all of the options for care, including what arrangements you are comfortable with when that final day comes.

Farewell Dear Friend Continued from page 24.

veterinarian will not agree to proceed with euthanasia. Even if you find yourself at an emergency hospital, with a sudden and grave prognosis, it is not always necessary to make an immediate decision to euthanize. In many cases it is reasonable to request palliative care, and take your friend home for a short time before the end. This will allow you to gather family and friends to say farewell, to spend some final quality time and to make arrangements for a euthanasia experience in a familiar setting.

Hospice care for animals

In many areas of the country, animal hospice care is available, and in home nursing care, and/or euthanasia services are becoming more common. The International Association of Animal Hospice and Palliative Care (IAAHPC) defines animal hospice as “care for animals, focused on the patient’s and family’s needs; on living life as fully as possible until the time of death [with or without intervention]; and on attaining a degree of preparation for death.” While specific animal hospice services are just becoming available in Rhode Island at this time, most veterinarians will help to guide you through the final days and do their best to help you meet the needs of your pet during this time. You may find some helpful resources online at sites such as: spiritsintransition.org, newenglandpethospice.com and iaahpc.org.

Grief : a challenge for people and animals

After the loss of a beloved animal friend, it is natural to experience grief. Our emotions may move through some or all of the following stages: disbelief, denial, bargaining, guilt, anger, depression and acceptance. The most difficult thing for many caregivers is the fact that sometimes our own family, friends or co-workers may not be sympathetic to the depth of our pain. While it may feel hurtful when others don’t seem to understand the reality of our grief, it is important to understand that not everyone has the same level of experience with human-animal relationship. Do your best to pardon the insensitivities that come from those who have not known the love of a dear pet. Animals may also be affected by grief when they have lost a housemate or friend. It is important to give them extra attention and care to help them through their own loss. Be alert for signs of lethargy, lack of appetite or changes in behavior. These changes are usually short-term, but if they continue you may need to consult with your veterinarian. The holistic veterinary modalities such as homeopathy, flower essences and herbal medicine may be helpful in caring for an animal who is experiencing symptoms of grief. Continued on page 30.

Farewell Dear Friend Continued from page 29.

Remember the joy

Healing from the loss you will feel may be eased by taking time to remember the special joy that was part of your relationship with your beloved pet. When you feel the hollow absence, fill it with memories of the special times that you were able to share with your friend. It may be helpful to create an area within your home where you gather special things, photos, pawprints, or paintings that keep the memory of your friend alive and present. If you are fortunate to receive cards or flowers sent by loving friends, put them in a prominent place, to remind yourself that you have the support of others who understand. Perhaps you might consider making a donation to an animal-related charity as a way to honor the life that has passed.

Re-open your heart

We have all experienced the loss of a dear friend, and we never will forget them. However, it does not have to mean that we will never make new friends. As your heart heals, allow it to open up to the possibility of a new life to share. There will likely be another animal, who much like your departed friend, has the need for your special capacity to love and care for them. May you go on to experience the joy once again of sharing your life with an animal who will become a dear friend. And may the spirit of every animal you have ever loved be with you, in your heart, forever.

FOSTER FEATURE - Paige

Looking for a new Paige to add to the next chapter in your life? Look no further! Paige is an incredibly adorable lab mix who will steal your heart if given just one chance. She is about 1-2 years old and was found wandering around Miami, alone and scared. This little love bug spent several weeks in a doggie daycare waiting for a home that never came along. Seeing her potential, American Lab Rescue scooped Paige up and transported her to RI to live in a foster home. Paige’s foster mom immediately fell in love with this affectionate, gentle, intelligent young lady with amazing, soulful amber eyes. Unfortunately, as it would turn out, Paige doesn’t do so well with smaller, crankier dogs that prefer to be left alone and so she relocated to another foster home that was a better fit. Despite her long, difficult journey from who knows how many homes, to street, to daycare, up the east coast, to isolation, to foster home, to foster home – this amazing little lady has proven to be not only adaptable but truly something special. She is a very well mannered “Velcro” dog that will stick right to you. Paige is currently living with a cat, a lab, and two tweenage humans. She is house trained and at about 50lbs, she is the perfect size! Paige is looking for pretty much any home, but if there’s another dog in the mix she would prefer them to love playing with other dogs. She is a bit thin, and possibly mixed with greyhound or whippet type breed, but is filling out more and more each day and will soon be at a healthy weight. If you are looking for a dog, that is mid-size, house trained and a heartbreaker: look no further. Paige is one special dog that would make a great addition to pretty much any home. Are you the one to give Paige’s story a happy ending? For more details, check out www.petfinder.com/petdetail/24430431. Fill out an application at fee application at www.americanlabrescue.com

Linda is still looking for her perfect forever home! She is a typical playful puppy, runs around for an hour then sleeps for 4! Not fully house trained quite yet but with her being super smart I can’t imagine that taking too long! She is going to be a BIG girl so she will need some training. For more info please email: joannepawsne@gmail.com

Freckles is such a doll! She is great with dogs, cats, and people of all kinds. I guess you could say she has a heart of gold. Freckles is still slightly nervous in new places but is gaining more and more confidence each new day. She is the type of dog that aims to please. For more info please email: pamc.paws@gmail.com

Gizmo is a very friendly cat who can be shy at first. He needs a little extra attention and love before he comes out of his shell, but after he warms up he’ll never leave your side. Gizmo would do well in a quiet home with no other pets.

Frankie the cat has it all. He’s sweet, cute, cuddly, and has a brother that he loves with all his heart. These two make a perfect pair, and would do well in a home adults and other cats.

Tawny was named after her beautiful golden brown colors. She’s sweet as sugar and loves to be pet. She would do well in a home with older children and possibly other cats.

Rhody

My dearest baby girl Rhody, I found you on I-95 when you were not

even nine months old. Abandoned, beaten, sick and scared. I thought I would rescue you that day but you spent ten years rescuing me. “You need to think with your head and not with your heart, we have to put her down,” they said but I fought so hard for you and you fought harder for me through the years. My best friend, soul-mate, love, muse, comedian, lover of all people, hairy four-legged daughter, you brought me and your big brother Rockstar such tremendous joy. Please remember you will always be in my heart until we meet again and I hope you know how much I love you. My bed, I mean your bed, will never be as comfortable, as warm or as perfect without you laying beside me. We said goodbye to my beloved 14 yr. 9mos. old German

I love you Monkey.

shepherd Jak-N-The Box on October 5th. All I could think of

Your Momma and Rockstar.

as I came home that day was that he was such a huge part of my life. How could he be gone in an instant? I adopted Jak when he was 5 weeks old after he had been found in a box, hence the name! He was a feisty, assertive little monster at that age, but blossomed into the most amazing dog. Jak loved people and with his calm, sweet personality, won over every person he met, even those that had been afraid of shepherds their entire lives. His calm, confident demeanor also helped many dogs – from doing dog-to-dog evaluations at the Providence Animal Rescue League to working with dog

had such a deep connection that I truly feel as if a piece of me is missing. The morning after, I automatically reached behind me coming down the stairs to take hold of his collar and help him down and thought “I keep reaching for you baby boy, but you are no longer there.” I know in time I’ll find peace with his death and smile at all that he was and did, but for now, I keep reaching for you Jak-Sprat.
