LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
F
ive years ago when I first launched the Animal Print Magazine, I had no idea what to expect. I knew that New Englanders loved their pets but I had no idea just how much!
When we held our first Halloween Dog Parade, a friend of mine joked that no one would want to dress their pet up in costume and strut their stuff down Wickenden St. in Providence, RI. Well, I’m happy to report that she was wrong. I had never seen anything quite like it and that’s when I knew I had found my dream job! It has been an exciting few years and with the magazine approaching it’s 5th Anniversary issue in August, I decided it was the perfect time to launch even further into the community by taking to the streets of Boston. We are thrilled to welcome our Bostonian pets and their people into our “pack”. For our readers who are already part of our “pack”, look for some exciting new changes to our layout and content including color, new features and more. For those who are joining us for the first time, welcome and please enjoy our “Green Issue” in honor of earth day as well as our new blending of RI and Boston events, information, adoptable pets, featured artists and much more. $3 Million Grant!
Squiggy, a mix of hairless Chinese Crested and Japanese Chin is RI’s own entry for the 2008 World’s Ugliest Dog Contest, and this little looker needs your vote! Besides the rather dramatic coiffure, his tongue hangs out sort of lopsided due to lack of teeth. As much as he enjoys lazing in a sunny window (and who doesn’t), his owner say they have to take care that he doesn't get too much since he can sunburn easily. Squig also has a day job as the mascot for The Pet Refuge, a non-profit animal shelter in North Kingstown, Rhode Island. The Stanton Foundation recently donated the largest contribution ever received in the history of the Boston ARL. The $3 million grant will be used to create a world class model for improving the welfare and future placement of homeless pets in the care of rescue groups, animal shelter facilities and animal control. The Stanton Foundation is named in honor of the late Frank Stanton, who served as president of CBS. Located on Chandler Street in the South End, and is scheduled to open next fall. New Dog Park Plans
MOST AGGRESSIVE DOG in the U.S. Local Dog trainer, Jeff Gellman of Solid K9 Training is looking for the most aggressive dog in the country. The chosen dog will receive $10,000 worth of training and boarding at Gellman’s Providence based kennel free of charge for 10 weeks of intensive training. Gellman specializes in rehabilitating problem pets, transforming animals and restoring peace in their owners’ lives. As he tells his clients, “I train YOU and your dog.” Owners of aggressive animals may believe euthanasia is their only option. By rehabilitating the most aggressive dog in the United States, Jeff intends to raise awareness about a pet owner’s options when they can no longer control their dog. A Gem in the Back Yard Hi editor, I think it would be a great idea if you write and article about Ophthalmology Veterinary, Kenneth L. Abrams, DVD, DACVO - he is a class act and is doing great work with pets. I have done my research on finding a good Ophthalmology Vet., and I would rate Dr. Abrams a plus 10 in his skills. My cat had Entropion repair, and it was a great work of art by Dr. Abrams. Dr. Abrams is a good person and truly does show great care for animals. Write about this Gem in New England - Dr. Abrams.

Best Pet Friendly Book Store Hello, Your recent edition of Animal Print indicated Barnes and Noble in Warwick, RI was the best pet -friendly bookstore. However, on my last trip to RI to visit family, I called this store to ask if they would allow my small short-haired red dachshund, who I would carry, as I shopped since he as back disc problems & can’t be left in the vehicle. I was told no, that it was a state law that dogs not be in the building at all because they have a coffee shop inside. When I indicated that I was calling because they were listed in the above way in your recent edition, the gentleman said he knew nothing about it & that dogs have never been allowed in their store. Thought you might want this feedback. Needless to say, I was very disappointed with the response. Thanks for your time. A response would be appreciated. I wonder if there might have been outdoor seating for their cafe' - but it is true that it's illegal for businesses serving food to allow pets inside. SMELL?
The most common reasons for relinquishing cats are behavioral problems, most of which are litter box related. This is also a driving factor in why a lot of cat guardians put their cats outside and the reason why nearly all of my feline clients seek my assistance. I know how they feel because I am currently living with the problem myself and, frankly, the whole situation really stinks. Several months ago, I and my two cats joined homes with my boyfriend, our dog, and his very shy cat Scrubs who is particularly sensitive. We knew she would be stressed, so we did the proper feline greeting of keeping them separated initially, with my cats confined and the resident cat free. After several exchanges of bedding to desensitize them to each other’s scent and after numerous supervised visitations that increased in frequency and length, things looked good. We slowly started letting them together more and more. Unfortunately, we eventually noticed we were seeing Scrubs less and less and what we did see was usually a white and grey blur darting under the bed. Then it happened. I smelled cat pee in the living room! I got on the floor and sniffed around and found it – a urine spot on the carpet. Oh goodie! First, we got her to the vet to make sure she was not
experiencing a medical problem, such as a urinary tract infection. All tests came up clear, so I knew I had a behavior problem on my hands. Now where could I find a behaviorist… Next, I had to remove the smell because cats are attracted to urinate in locations where they smell urine. Because it was already dry, I soaked the spot with water and blotted as much as possible. I then soaked the rug as well as the hardwood below with Nature’s Miracle, let them air dry, and repeated about 5 times. You must use an enzymatic cleaner because standard cleaners do not break down the urine. Now it was time to create the ideal kitty commode. I found soft, clumping, unscented litter because many cats do not like pellet or

crystal litters and many hate the scented kind. Also, it is important to not change litter types or move the litter box because cats really don’t like that either. I made sure to scoop daily and each week dump the litter box and washed it with dish soap. Do not use bleach or heavily scented products and do not spray your box with an air freshener. This may smell great to you, but can be a deterrent to your cat. The general rule of paw is to have one box per cat, or one more box than the number of cats. Offer a variety of styles in a variety of locations to determine which your cat likes. I have one shallow box in the guest room, one deep box in the office, and one covered box in the hall. Most cats are afraid of automatic boxes. The box should be located in a private area away from any appliances that make noise, such as freezers, washing machines, or furnaces. Multi-level homes should have boxes on each level – especially for elderly cats. If you want to relocate a box, you should move it about one foot per day closer to the final destination. I did all of the right steps and she hasn’t peed in the living room since! Success you say? Not quite. After a few weeks, we started seeing puddles in the bathroom that were not from the tub. Lovely. As I soaked the urine up and saturated the spots with the enzymes day after day, I came to grips with the fact this was not a litter box problem, it was an anxiety problem. Eventually, Scrubs started anti-anxiety medication and things drastically improved. However, pilling her soon became like trying to pill a rabid cougar on crack and it was stressing her out more than ever. After a few weeks, I was able to get the assistance of a local veterinarian who was so wonderful in helping me find a transdermal form of the medication. This is fairly common for cats on long-term medication, but I was shocked to find that only three or four pharmacies in the state make it. Scrubs now gets a dose of her mediation once per day in alternating ears. We are able to easily medicate her, but it has only been a few weeks. I cleaned up some urine the other day, so obviously we are not there yet. Only time will tell. If your cat repeatedly refuses to use the litter box, despite your best educated efforts at the steps I described above, then your cat is telling you he is not happy. Animals do not feel jealousy nor do they do these things to “spite” us. Your cat is upset and communicating with you the only way he can. It is often difficult to find the cause of litter box problems, so you should seek the help of a qualified behaviorist as soon as possible. The sooner you are able to identify the problem, the sooner you can make your cat happier and your rugs smell nicer. teven received his first camera at 6 years old and at age 10 he began developing film in his darkroom. Since that time he was captivated by the process and magic of ‘making’ pictures.
“It was an incredible thrill to put a white sheet of photographic paper in the enlarger then watch it become alive in the developer under the amber light of the darkroom.” He learned much of the technical aspects of light, lenses and film during his teenage years and continued through college shooting for fun and the occasional professional gig.

When asked what he enjoys shooting most he says, “I enjoy the art of photography really no matter what the subject. Though I do especially like ease dropping on nature in all her forms; in the woods, mountains, by the beach and the special relationship people have with their animals”. The Potter League For Animals Builds Earth-Friendly Facility One Of The First Shelters In The Country To Build Green

I
t wasn’t a lack of space that spurred The Potter League for Animal’s decision to build a new shelter for the 1,900 homeless and lost pets that come through its doors each year. Rather, the facility lacked ideal conditions for the pets, and the facility was below par by today’s animal housing and care standards.
“If someone approached us to adopt a dog and said that they would keep him in a place that was drafty, damp, with chain link fences and no windows, that person wouldn’t be given an animal. And yet, that’s how the animals in our care were living and we really felt it was time to lead by example,” explained Patricia Heller, Director of Development at The Potter League’s shelter, located in Middleton, Rhode Island. After years of “putting band aids” on the original pound-style animal shelter, the majority of which was constructed in the 1930’s, The Potter League decided it was time to upgrade and so they set out to design and construct a new environmentally-friendly facility that would provide homeless and lost pets with a comfortable place to stay, while also having a minimal impact on the wetlands that surrounded the shelter site. It was the Kittery, Maine-based ARQ Architects who came up with the earth-friendly design for The Potter League’s new 19,000 square foot facility - a notable improvement from the
9,000 square feet of usable space in their current structure. ARQ Architects are well-known in the world of animal rescue organizations. The firm performed major renovations to a San Francisco shelter in the mid 1990’s and the first-of-its-kind design set the new standard for animal shelters, with actual rooms replacing cages, bars and fencing. The architectural firm is also known for “green-building,” which is the practice of constructing energy-efficient structures in a manner that has minimal impact on the surrounding environment. Green-building also involves the utilization of environmentallyfriendly building materials, like non-toxic paints, recycled flooring, and wood from in locations where new trees are planted in place of those that are harvested. “We are one of the first shelters in the country to build green and are registered with the US Green Building Council as a LEED project - Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design”, “[Green-building] really fit with our mission as an organization,” Heller explained, adding, “Our shelter is also located on a wetlands site so we had to be extra careful of how our new facility would impact the environment, especially where we’re located in a major wildlife corridor. There was really a need to protect this area and green-building also fit our needs in that respect.”

In the spring of 2007, work got underway on the new $8 million project and by the fall of 2008, the new facility is scheduled to be complete. The Potter League’s new animal shelter, which will also house animals from area Animal Control and the Humane Society for Rhode Island’s Newport County, is designed to be efficient and comfortable for its human and non-human occupants and the organization hopes that the facility will serve as a model for other animal rescue organizations who are looking to re-build.

The new shelter will feature separate housing areas for cats and dogs, with additional “flex space” that can be used for small animals or to ease any crowding that may occur in either the cat or dog housing areas. The housing areas have been designed to ease the amount of stress that the animals experience during their stay at the shelter. “Right now, if you want to take a dog out for a walk, you have to walk him past all of the other dogs, so there’s barking and howling and it can be very scary for the animal,” Heller explained. She continued, “The new facility will feature a pod system. Each pod will have ten climate-controlled rooms that open out into a common play area and into an outdoor area as well.” The new shelter will also allow for the segregation of newly-received pets from the animals who are available and waiting for adoption. In many cases, the animals who are brought into the shelter are found as strays who have been exposed to a host of viruses, parasites and potentially-infectious illnesses, and in the current facility, there’s little division between pets who are undergoing the intake process and the animals who are waiting for their new family to come along. The lack of physical division among the pets, combined with a virtually non-existent ventilation system, leads to illness in otherwise healthy, adoptable pets who then must be treated before they can be adopted out.

“We end up with terrible outbreaks due to the close quarters and lack of ventilation… Not only does it cost us money to treat these ill animals, but many animals end up staying at the shelter longer than they would have otherwise, because few people want to take an ill pet into their home,” Heller explained. Notably, shelter staff are eagerly anticipating life with a stateof-the-art ventilation system that will provide fresh air to each individual kennel - not only will the system eliminate undesirable odors, but more importantly, it will help reduce the risk of illness outbreaks. The new animal housing area - and the shelter as a whole - is also designed to appeal to volunteers, many of whom “literally didn’t have a place to hang their coats” in the old building. Unfortunately, The Potter League saw over 400 volunteers a year visit the facility, but many were lost. Heller explained, “Many have left because they really couldn’t interact with the animals in the way that they wanted to. And in the end, that’s not fair to the people or the animals.” Surrendering a pet, which is often a very emotional process, will also be made easier in this new building, as it will feature a dozen private intake rooms. The rooms will also allow for effective information sharing about an animal from shelter staff to the pet’s new family during the adoption process. In addition to making life easier indoors, the new Potter League shelter will also benefit the environment since the shelter has been designed to have a minimal impact on the surrounding area. For instance, part of the roof is “vegetated” - covered with plants - that will provide the building with insulation and reduce rain run-off. The non-vegetated portion of the roof is linked to a sistern system that will significantly lower the shelter’s water bill. Rainwater run-off will be diverted to storage tanks and the water will then be available for rinsing the kennels, watering plants and other non-potable uses. The driveway leading up to the shelter will absorb rainwater, rather than creating run-off into the nearby wetlands. The actual building was positioned in a manner that allows for “daylight harvesting,” which cuts down on electricity usage. And radiant heat will warm the adoption rooms. The old building won’t go to waste either. On demolition day, the remains of the former facility were sorted out into piles of concrete, metal, and wood. Each pile was then carted away for recycling. Care was also taken to ensure that in a century from now, when the new structure has become obsolete and antiquated, those building materials can be recycled as well. The organization’s spaying and neutering initiative will benefit from the new structure, as there will be a surgical suite and other medical facilities on-site. Currently, all off the animals that are adopted from The Potter League are spayed or neutered prior to placement, and with a surgical suite on-site, some of those trips to outside veterinary clinics will no longer be required.
“Our organization places a strong emphasis on education and outreach. The organization also offers a host of basic training. obedience, agility, agility freestyle and socialization classes for pets and their owners. There’s potential to expand or improve these programs with the space in the new 100-plus room building, which will feature an indoor training area. The same can be said for the shelter’s groups, such as small dog playgroup and a support group for grieving humans who have lost their pets. Notably, The Potter League is entering its twenty-fifth year of humane education and they’re optimistic that many of these programs will have room to grow once the new facility is complete. The Potter League’s Humane Education program hosts more than 700 presentations each year at schools, libraries and other locations throughout the area.

The Providence Animal Rescue League needs foster homes to help with animals who need some extra tender loving care. Foster care allows us to place temporarily unadoptable animals in homes where they can receive extra care until ready to go to a new home. These may be a cat or dog who is ill or injured or a litter of kittens that are too young to be placed. Only those with approved foster applications will be permitted to participate in our foster program.
