BOW WOW VOW’S Break World Record!

Litttleton, COHundreds of dogs showed up at Aspen Grove Lifestyle Center to try to break the record for a mass dog wedding. Organizers of the Bow Wow Vows say more than 178 dog couples (356 individual dogs) tied the knot. That unofficially breaks the world record of 27, set in the Netherlands. Nancy Solchenberger brought her two pugs to the event. It was time to make it legal. Dezi is totally in love with Lucy,” she said. “They are both almost two years old and they’ve been living together the whole time.” Theresa Lough’s Great Dane Gertrude participated as well. But she came looking for a partner. Sadly she didn’t find one during the pre-wedding speed dating event! “We’ll find somebody,” she said. Gertrude and many other brides were appropriately dressed, wearing either veils or full bridal gowns. Their male counterparts donned tuxes, bow ties or other wedding-related attire.

Clients pay $200.00 at registration (which includes the $99.95 annual fee) plus $49.95 monthly and $24.95 per 24 hour visit. Cervantes says roughly 40 percent of her clients are empty-nesters. “The demand is so big, I’m considering creating a division that will cater to retirement communities,” she says.

Anyone who has ever been involved in the adoption of a pet, knows the cost involved in this heartwarming event. Whether you are the adopting agency or the new loving caregiver; finding homes for unwanted animals is emotional, time consuming, and expensive. Most animal lovers want to believe that enough money can be raised to save every animal and keep our pet placement passion blazing. What if this was true? Building an Animal Non-Profit Agency and Fund Raising to keep it going, can be fun and easier than you think, if a few, simple rules are followed: Pick a short catchy name for your group and your fund raiser - Short names remain in people’s memories. When they appear regularly in the press or on radio or TV, they soon become a part of people’s day to day life. If an animal lover sees the name of an animal group they recognize, most will stop to read the ad or article to see what is going on and what they can do to help. Form A Non-Profit Corporation To form a “Non-Profit Corporation” it is advisable to use an attorney and a certified public accountant (CPA). Although this can cost upwards to $3000.00, very often local attorneys and CPA’s will complete the initial work of setting up the corporation and acquiring IRS “non-profit” status for free. This “pro bono” service is given in exchange for publicity for the professional completing the tasks. Do not be afraid to call local attorneys and CPA’s to inquire if they have anyone willing to do this work. Most set aside a portion of their budget for this type of work.

Once your group has received “non-profit status”, many of the national chains such as “Wal-Mart”, “Petsmart” and “Petco” will provide broken bags of cat and dog food, cat litter and other supplies used in shelter operations, free of charge or at a greatly reduced price. Many will also allow adoption sites or bulletin boards for pictures and information on the pets awaiting new homes. Most require a copy of the Corporation’s paperwork to register for the give-aways. Register Your Group’s Name So Your Hard Work Is Not Lost It is important to register your group’s name to insure that your efforts are not supporting another agency or group. The Secretary of State’s Office in your state has records on the ownership of a corporation and “non-profit” names. Sometimes names are no longer being used and are available from the previous owner for free, or for a small fee. E-mail addresses should also be checked to insure that you are not using a name which has another meaning. Elect A Board Of Directors Who Will Work Together To Accomplish The Groups’ Needs All to often the initial Board of Directors is comprised of strong willed individuals who can be as dedicated to their own egos as to the cause. If your group is new, make sure the people representing your beliefs understand how to market them as the work of the masses, rather than as an individual. Remember, your Board of Directors is usually in control of the group’s goals, power, and finances for a minimum of one year. A year is a long time to patiently wait to move ahead

with your goals, when animals’ lives are at stake. Interview each and every candidate to assess their skills, beliefs and ability to work with each other. Select the candidates that listen and best fit your group’s needs and goals. Don’t select the ones who tell you everything they will accomplish, but who haven’t asked questions as to what the mission statement of the group will be, or it’s needs and goals. Build An Audience Prepare a list of all the local TV and radio stations; and daily and weekly newspapers. Prepare press releases and submit them to all the newspapers as well as the TV and radio stations on a regular basis. Keep your list consistent, and continue to send your information to all of them, even if they haven’t carried one of your stories. Just because a particular news agency does not run your story the first couple of times, doesn’t mean that they won’t use it for a filler in the future and then continue to use your information. Find a reporter that likes animals and can either become part of your group’s advisory board or is willing to help with your publicity program. Newspapers, and radio and TV stations look for news and “feel good stories”. By submitting material on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, you build an audience and so does the newspaper. People will buy the newspaper to see who is for adoption, and what programs, fundraisers, or volunteer opportunities are upcoming. Know Your Audience Don’t plan an “adults only black-tie ball” unless you know your volunteers and audience regularly participate in this type of event. Instead, Do plan a “Black-tie Doggie Ball”, where your supporters’ dogs come dressed to the hilt for a dinner of steak and biscuits, for an evening of laughter, and photos that will surely be viewed for decades.

Build A Website It is important to have a website which details your mission statement, policies, and highlights the accomplishments of the organization. The website should be updated at least once a month. If you are highlighting animals for adoption, that listing should be updated or refreshed (changing the order of the animals if they remain the same) weekly. Link you website to other sites which will provide your organization with a “fee per hit” like “Amazon.com”. Allow Everyone To Be Able To Participate Plan entrance fees, membership fees and events to meet everyone’s income level. All too often volunteer groups look for the “golden cow” to join their group. The “more the merrier” is actually a better way to insure enough volunteers and increase the number of people spreading the “good word by way of mouth”. Events can allow for different levels of participation but still guarantee that everyone can feel like they are a part of the big moment. Senior citizens and kids are often looking for volunteer opportunities. Animal shelters are great places to wed kids, pets, and seniors; and produce long lasting and rewarding relationships. Learn How Other Similar Groups Raise Money And Adopt Pets One of the easiest things to do on-line, is ﬁnd other animal advocacy groups and organizations with pets for adoption. Three of the best websites to review are run by the “Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals”, the “Georgia Humane Society”, and “Best Friends”, the largest animal sanctuary in the United States, which is located in Utah. All of these groups are involved in legislative efforts on behalf of animals, raising money, and adopting pets.

Plan Fun Fund Raising Activities How many spaghetti dinners with rafﬂes can you attend in a year? Hopefully none!! Fundraisers need to be fun. When they are successful, and repeated yearly, your audience will grow because people look forward to particular events. What types of events work? Different Ones!! A “Black-tie Doggie Ball”; an Easter, Halloween, or Christmas Dog Parade; Dog Olympics; a Cat, Guinea Pig, or Ferret Pet Circus; or a scavenger hunt with your dog or involving animal related items, are all fundraising events which can draw a large crowd. All should include a pet photographer offering individual pet photos, since most people want a remembrance of the event. All of the events will require a few months of pre-planning, but in the end will generate good press coverage, a large crowd, and highly satisfactory fund raising. For active pet rescue groups, events can be planned for each season. The “Black-tie Doggie Ball” should be planned for the summer and include a band or DJ, appetizers for the dogs and their owners, sit down dinner for both, volunteers to walk the dogs if their “dates” wish to dance or have a few minutes for a break, and a keepsake to take home. Ball tickets can price anywhere from $25.00/person and pet, to $250.00/”couple”. It all depends upon the market the event will serve and the amount of excess offered. One “Doggie-Ball” event a friend attended in New Jersey in 2003, cost $350.00 for a ticket for her and her dog. This evening was held in a national hotel chain’s ballroom, and included pate’ and ﬁlet mignon for both the dog and it’s owner; champagne for the owner; a bottle of “champdoggie” for each dog; and a set of high end dog dishes and a book signed by a local dog book author as a favor for each “couple”.

A dog parade can be planned for any holiday. Required costumes help to make the event more festive and provide the opportunity for prizes and photos by the local news agencies. Often the local ﬁre department will provide a ﬁre engine to lead the parade. The selection of a king and queen to lead the parade will also add to the party. Ending the event with individual pet photos provides a lasting memory. A “dog wash” instead of a carwash provides an opportunity for the involvement of teen groups, boy scout and girl scout troops, or high school seniors to provide community service. Add doggie manicures, new collars and leashes, and everyone goes home looking good.

She is a member of the Jamestown Town Council, and ran with the campaign intent of spearheading an effort to ﬁnally build an Animal Shelter for the Town. This year’s Holiday Dog Parade on December 23rd is the 8th time Jamestown’s main street has been closed for this big holiday happening. Chilly Dog How to keep your dog active and warm this winter.

Cold weather is approaching and New England winters can get pretty chilly not only for us, but for our pets as well. For any of you who have short-haired breeds, you may notice your pets shivering in the winter, so you may find your walks and outdoor adventures cut short. My pitbull Maison literally huddles up and shakes in the winter because her bully fur is so thin and she has very little fat on her muscular frame. Many bully breed guardians know what I mean. So do guardians of greyhounds, weimaraners, vizslas, Dobermans, Chihuahuas, boxers, and many others. Because we aren’t able to take our dogs out to burn off winter boredom, you may experience less than desirable behaviors. For example, attention seeking behavior like stealing things and engaging in catch-me-if-you-can games, destructive chewing, jumping, excessive barking, and the list goes on. You may be wondering what is going on with your normally well-behaved dog. Well, his routine is messed up and he is not getting that energy outlet he needs. When that happens, just like with humans, dogs act out. They are bored and need something to do. When it’s so cold outside, what options do you have? First, winter is a perfect time to sign your dog up for training classes. Shop around and find a good school that offers a variety of classes that you and your dog may enjoy. You should have plenty of homework to practice between weekly sessions and your dog will love it. This may be the perfect time to try some advanced training, introductory agility, fly ball, or anything that your dog may like. There are countless benefits to formal training classes that outweigh in-home training and will really enhance the bond with your dog. If you do not have the time or money for a class, try creating games inside the house. Invest in some quality puzzle toys for your dog. Hide-A-

Squirrel, Buster Cubes, Twist-n-Treats, Kongs, and many other toys are great ways for your dog to burn off extra mental and physical steam. My personal favorite is the Tug-a-Jug. If you don’t have the money for toys like this, there are plenty of free things you can do around the house. Shaping is a method of training that allows you to train your dog to do some pretty cool behaviors. My favorite shaping game is “101 Things to do With a Cardboard Box.” If you understand the concept of shaping, you can train your dog to do anything! Also, try putting your dog into a sit-stay and hiding cookies or tennis balls around the house. Release the dog and encourage him to find and eat all of the cookies or bring the balls back and put them in a bucket or laundry basket. This, of course, takes training and patience but if you stick it out, you can keep your dog busy for hours! If you have trouble figuring it out, most trainers would be happy to help. Finally, jackets or booties are great ways to get your dog outside and still keep them toasty warm in cold weather. Of course, you may get made fun of for dressing your dog, but I see these as a functional need for many shorthaired, lean breeds like bully breeds, Dobermans, greyhounds, vizslas, weimeraners, boxers, Chihuahuas, and others. You can find great jackets in most pet supply stores, boutiques, or online. My favorite are the personalized jackets I use for my dog, hand-made by “Four on the Floor.” Custom made jackets are perfect for deep-chested breeds because standard coats often do not fit properly to keep these dogs warm and dry. My dog’s jackets allow me to take her out in the wind, rain, sleet, snow, and cold when otherwise she would be cooped up indoors. It was custom fitted to her measurements out of material I picked out, and embroidered with her name. Also, booties may be found at most pet

supply stores or online. These are good options for many dogs to prevent cuts from ice, sidewalk salt, frostbite, or painful snowballs building up between furry toes. Your dog may look goofy to some or adorable to others, but no matter how she looks, she should be warm and dry. Winter does not need to equate to bored-out-oftheir-skull dogs. It can actually be a great opportunity to teach your dog fun new things, really challenge their brains, or get them appropriately protected so they can still enjoy the countless outdoor activities winter has to offer. Below are some suggested resources to help you in your search for the things I have discussed here. Try a new twist on the "hostess gift" and bring some homemade treats for her pets! Just be sure to note them at the party - or more than just the pups will be noshing on these delicious bites.

Jingle Kitty Balls 3 baby carrots, cooked until soft 16 oz canned tuna in olive oil, drained 2 oz cooked herring, skin removed 2 tbl whole grain bread crumbs or oatmeal 2-3 tbl grated cheese 2 tsp brewer’s yeast several pinches of chopped catnip 1 egg, beaten 2 tbl tomato paste (not ketchup) Preheat the oven to 350 Farenheit. Mash the carrots with the fish, bread crumbs or oatmeal, cheese, brewer’s yeast, catnip, egg and tomato paste to an even paste. Mold into small balls and put on a greased baking tray. Bake for 15-20 minutes, checking frequently: the fishballs should be golden brown and feel firm. Sprinke with some grated cheese , and whala - done!

HOMELESS one local dog in need of a miracle. On a blustery day last month, while walking in the Armory park with my old chocolate lab, Harriet, I found a scared little dog running loose with a leash dragging behind. It was a really cold day, his tag said he’d come over a mile to get to the park, and he seemed lost. I caught him and brought him to my fenced yard where I thought he would be safe until his owner picked him up. I called the number on his tag repeatedly, leaving messages but with no reply. Since I have a scared shelter kitty and my old girl lab, I didn’t want to let him inside just before I had to go to work so the lost pup stayed outside. I left for work in the afternoon thinking that he would be picked up and home soon. A short time later, I got a call from my neighbor that the dog was barking his head off in my yard. I got a friend to bring him in and put him in a crate in the basement, where he stayed and finally slept. After 7 hours, his owner called to say that he was grateful that I picked him up, but that he really couldn’t keep him and was planning to take him to the pound. I thought if he did that, the little guy would be put down immediatly since he is a rugged little intact red-nosed pit bull. He asked if I wanted to keep him, and I said yes, absolutely. Before that call, I had no intention of getting another dog after just weeks before losing another beloved pit bull who developed a tumor in his heart and went through 7 months of surgeries and cancer treatments. I am now working on his manners and in search of a loving new home for him. He is a wonderful little boy with tons of energy and love. He never responded to the name on his tag, so I changed his name to Zephyr in honor of the blustery day we met. He is working on basic obedience and general good citizenship skills. In just a month, he has come a long way in responding to a new life. He is not at all aggressiveabout other dogs, adores my kitty, has no food aggression, and once he learns who is a friend, is ready to smother them with love and kisses. I plan to get him neutered next week and get him up to date on his shots, so he will be ready for his new home. The best home for him is one that can provide lots and lots of love and firm gentle guidance. He has lots of energy and

Veruca is an 8 year old salt and pepper sweetheart. She was found on the side of the road after being abused. Her mom loves her very much and would love to keep her, but has 2 other dogs that don’t get along with their little sister very well. She is awesome! She is very lovable and smart.

Calvin is a 2 year old, neutered male, “Tree Walking Coonhound”, who is a big “mush” and very lovable. He has lots of energy and is great with kids and other dogs. Jack was left on the steps of the “Animal Clinic” this summer with a pathetic note and $24.00. He was un-neutered, and supposedly up to date on his shots. Sebastian is approx 1 yr old and loves to play. He was dropped off at the shelter by the owner’s juvenile friend. She stated her owner was leaving for vacation and didn’t want the cat any more. He is a love.....If you like to be pet and play, he’s the one for you. Sebastian is neutered, up to date with shots.

Jimmy is 11 months old. He came to us from a rescue out of state, where he and his brother Joey were disposable dogs because the were black. Both are neutered, vaccinated and heartworm negative. Jimmy is the more reserved of the two and is working on housebreaking.

Herman is approx 6 months old. He was found on the side of the highway by an animal rescue group transporting a van full of animals to the state. He is a little shy at ﬁrst, but on his level will come over for attention. He has been neutered, vaccinated, and FELV tested negative.

Boots is a gorgeous cat and is around 1 year old. He’s a big marshmallow who loves to sit back and “supervise” all the shelter volunteers. He, along with his brother Patches, were recently surrendered to us and are now available for adoption.

Patches is a fabulous cat, who is around 1 year old, can be a bit shy at ﬁrst, but it only takes a little love and attention for him to warm up to you. Ever curious and very sweet, he, along with his brother Boots, were recently surrendered to us and are now available for adoption.

Molly is a happy 8½ year old Chocolate Lab who was surrendered to us, and is looking for a loving forever home. She has a very sweet personality, but her owners indicated that she is very possessive of her toys, foods, and treats, so a home without children would be best for her. She is spayed and is crate trained.

Chip is a wonderfully sweet and handsome 1 year old neutered male who was just surrendered to us. Chip was an indoor cat, who became extremely upset when the neighbors cat wandered into the yard, as he thought he should protect his family. Chip is also very affectionate and love to cuddle.

Garﬁeld came into the shelter as a stray and was thin and covered with scratches. He is approx. 2 1/2 yrs. old. He tested negative for FIV/FELV and is up-to-date on his shots. As you can see, he has recovered nicely. He is always looking for attention and giving hugs. He is just a cat that wants to be loved.

Moses was adopted from our shelter as a puppy, you’ll see him on our website as Franco, under Happy Tails. As pups him & his litter mates looked like Mastiff mix pups. Unfortunately for Franco/Moses, it turned out, they were Am Bull mix. He was returned to us for that reason.

Archie is about 65 pounds and approx 1 year old. He was picked up as a stray after being hit by a car, lucky for Archie he knew how to tuck and roll. This dog does not have a mean bone in his body and just loves attention. Archie is absolutely in love with toys, it does not matter what kind they are, tennis balls to squeaky toys.

Greta Again..and Forever Her vet hasn’t even sent a postcard: I think they’ve forgotten all about my Greta. They’ve crossed off her name from their ancient files. But my Greta is still very much with us and above ground. Well, she did get something another vet labelled “vertigo.” The title of a Hitchcock flick and a philosophical term, in existential French. For us it was a strange event in our Greta’s life. Her head tilted to one side and her legs stretched outward as though a ghost had appeared on her horizon, inner or outer. She collapsed outdoors and needed help getting back safely but stiffly in house. We thought, she’s reached the limits of age expectancy for her breed, 14 winters and summers. There’s an animal hospital not far from our residence

and they gave us emergency service, but even on the telephone they were reassuring. Familiar with the symptoms we described. “Your Greta has the look, according to your descriptions, of a doggie who can be cured. Don’t distress yourselves too much.” Even the canine caretaker nurse knew this much. Sure enough, the staff, headed by a gentle genie, tall and stately, stared into her eyes, Greta’s I mean, and pronounced something like this. “She will be well in precisely two weeks, a fortnight. You can give her these tiny pills, or not. In any case, she has a common condition for senior canine citizens, and it does go away. You will have her with you good as new for another chapter.” Not in those exact words, but with that message of hope and cheer. Greta still attracts admiring glances, ﬂattering words, and affectionate, respectful pats from children. Even though her coat isn’t as silky as it used to be, once upon a time. Yes, her snout has gone gray, (like mine) but people, human dogs I mean, mistake her for a puppy! Her grace

and charm have not diminished. This is a lifetime theme for me, the notion that gifts stay despite the years, no matter what the experts may say about time being a thief. Time is a sculptor and an investor. Greta has suffered from bouts of ﬂeas too, and we take care of the infestation as best we can with baths and creams and the usual battery of cures. Although we do fear the poisons on such a wee creature, all of 8 pounds. On the sands at Narragansett she can run, put her paws into the shallow surf, and match the colors of the wet shoreline. She brings out the mood of every parlor and the meaning of every sunbeam. She still evokes envy from my family. Sometimes good-naturedly and with humor, and at other times quite seriously. “Pay more attention to your grandchild!” says a new mom as Greta ensconces herself upon a pillow before the ﬁre on the hearth. I pen this appeal to the public and the divine, the same thing I say as a command to Greta: “Live forever! Don’t die!”

Besides her loving and distraught father she leaves behind four brothers who she loved, but sometimes found bothersome: Po, Bruno, Mr. Squeaks and Hercules all of Providence. What do you plan on doing within the next year? Jay: Saving the world. Sir Nigel: Yeah I’ll go with what he said, saving the world. He’s going to need a sidekick ^_~.
