s I sit dock-side, soaking up the last bits of summer sun and ocean breeze before the crisp fall air settles in, I prepare to embrace the change in season. The dog days of summer have been especially enduring this year with record hot days. That being said, the pups and I are ready to cozy up and enjoy the brisk air and fall foliage. My pups and I have recently settled into our new home and we’re ready to see each season through a new lens. I finally have that big yard for Bodhi and Simon and our new space has gotten me thinking about fun new ways to entertain with friends and their dogs.
This issue is a reflection of the intimate connection we share with our pets. If you are getting married and are looking for ways to include your furry companion, you will find a great article with tips for your special day. Also included is a guide for setting up a howling good time backyard movie night with your dog. And if you aren’t feeling that loving connection with your dog by now, you’ll find an interesting article covering the trials, tribulations and for many of us the ultimate joy of sleeping with your pet. As always you’ll find info on all of the wonderful upcoming pet-friendly events this area has to offer. You won’t want to miss Animal Rescue RI’s “Bark on the Beach”, Save One Soul’s “Crate Escape” and we are especially thrilled to congratulate The East Greenwich Animal Protection League on their 20th Anniversary Hound Hike…that’s quite an accomplishment! I hope you enjoy our new issue and have a wonderful Fall. Stephanie Georgia editor

Dogs Now Allowed to Wine & Dine at Restaurant Patios in Rhode Island!
Oregon Supreme Court Finds Dogs Are “Sentient Beings,” Not Mere Property, In Landmark Ruling
We are excited to report that last month, Governor Gina Raimondo has signed a law allowing you to bring your dog along to restaurants in RI. Service animals are, of course, already allowed at restaurants, but this law makes a change for all dogs and allows them to be present on restaurant patios. The law allows restaurant owners to establish limits on the size and type of dogs. It also requires the restaurant to display a sign informing guests that dogs are allowed.
Recently, the Oregon Supreme Court issued a landmark ruling finding that an emaciated dog named Juno is more than just a thing, under the law. The court found instead that, in a significant way, Juno is akin to a human child. This may not sound totally remarkable if you are not a lawyer. You and I know that dogs are creatures, beings, with hopes (for treats) and dreams (that cause their feet to twitch), and personalities (that we adore). Under the law, dogs and other animals are, by and large, considered to be property—on more or less equal footing with tables and chairs, purses and chests of drawers. What that means is that they can be bought and sold, and have few standards as to how they must be treated (outside of some minimal abuse and neglect protections). In so doing, the court granted legal significance to the dog’s “sentience”—his capacity to experience feelings, and pain.
“I’m suspicious of people who don’t like dogs, but trust a dog that doesn’t like a person.” –Bill Murray Sophie enjoys a cocktail at India Restaurant in Providence.

Pets in Need 8
Opening of Low-cost Vet Clinic Every year, veterinarians throughout Rhode Island see thousands of pet owners who are elderly, disabled, or low-income and don’t have the financial means to provide proper veterinary care for their pets. Despite the efforts of many veterinarians and agencies, these pet owners are often left with nowhere to turn when their pets are in need. To help meet this demand, the Rhode Island SPCA and the Rhode Island Veterinary Medical Association Companion Animal Foundation have partnered to establish a full-service, low-cost veterinary clinic. The Pets in Need Veterinary Clinic will provide medical and surgical services for pets owned by need-based elderly, disabled and low income citizens of Rhode Island. Pet owners who demonstrate income eligibility and/or current participation in a state or federal benefit program will be able to access care for their pets. The clinic is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose sole mission is to provide quality veterinary care for pets who might not otherwise receive it. The clinic is located at 40 Amaral Street in East Providence and is fully staffed with an experienced veterinarian and experienced veterinary technicians. Volunteer veterinarians throughout the state have offered to contribute their time at the clinic. Eligibility will be explained by the clinic staff when calling to make an appointment, however emergency and life threatening cases will be treated regardless of eligibility. All clients of the clinic will be expected to pay a nominal fee for the care their pet receives.
CRANSTON

Thanks to this partnership between the Rhode Island SPCA and RIVMA, a significant number of clients will now be able to get the quality veterinary care for their beloved pets that was not possible in the past. The Pets in Need Veterinary Clinic gives a second chance for pets that would otherwise go without preventative and curative care.Appointments can be made by contacting the clinic at 401.270-3832.

ALL YOU NEED IS
LOVE AND A DOG Tips on how to include your dog in your wedding!
F
or many of us, our dogs are so much more than “man’s best friend.” They’re part of our family and an integral part of our lives. It’s no wonder more and more couples are choosing to include their canine family members in their nuptials. With 1,001 things on your to-do-list you don’t want to add another stressor by failing to tackle the logistics of including your dog in your wedding! To help The Animal Print has put together a few tips on how to ensure things go smoothly (and how to keep your pup from running amok).
Alert Your Guests and Vendors
If you’re planning to having your pet walk down the aisle, choose your venue and vendors carefully. Remember, not everyone loves dogs as much as you. Many venues only allow service animals, and it’s not uncommon for people to be afraid of dogs, particularly large breeds. The best policy is to let everyone (guests included) know your pup will be at the wedding. That way you can hire accordingly, and guests will know what to expect ahead of time.
Personality
When considering including your dog in your wedding ceremony, consider their personality first. It may add some comic relief if Fido goes and licks grandmas foot but if he starts barking or is prone to excessive nervousness, you may want to reconsider your

11
plan. However, if your dog is the best-behaved pet on the block, then you might want to make him your ring bearer, include her as a flower girl or even help escort you down the aisle. Whatever your pups role is, it’s a good idea to designate a handler that will be in charge of your dog at all times throughout the ceremony. This will relieve any pressure you might feel to make sure that your dog behaves properly.
Avoid Accidents
Designate someone to take your pup on a long walk before the ceremony so they are relaxed and have a chance to go potty. Feed your dogs either in advance or at the end of the night and give them lots of opportunities to do their business before the event. You don’t want to step in something unexpected as you make your way down the aisle, and your guests don’t want it either!
Doggie Daycare
Although it is fun to have your dog for your wedding ceremony, you may not want him around when food is being served at the reception. Make sure that you have a back-up plan for dog sitting during the reception if you don’t plan on having someone take your pup home while you are celebrating. Have it be someone’s job to check on your sweet and possibly confused friend during the reception. Make sure you ask ahead of time so you don’t need to get worried and wind up leaving your own reception. Ask someone in the wedding party or a little sibling, cousin, etc. to do you the
flavor of letting him out, playing with him, and loving on him a little while his parents celebrate their new marriage.
Make it fun for your dog!
Consider handing out treats guests can give to your dog for tricks or good behavior. Your dog wrangler can help your pet interact with guests, and make sure your pooch gets all the care she needs to enjoy your wedding day.
Ideas on How To Include Your Dog!
Be creative with how to include your dog in the wedding. Typical jobs for both big and small breeds include: • Flower Dog: Your dog can carry a bouquet of flowers or basket of petals in his mouth. Just try to avoid flowers toxic to dogs, such as hydrangeas and azaleas. Too hard for Fido? You can always attach a basket to his collar. • Ring Bearer: You can find pillows that tie to dog collars, or simply attach the rings to the collar itself with ribbon or other decorative material. Voilà! • Bridesmaid or Best Man: There are many options for dressing all sizes of dogs as well as beautiful floral neck wreaths. Rehearse as much as you can with your dog before the big day and leave ample time to practice during the actual rehearsal so that your dog (and his or her handler) knows exactly what to do and when to do it. How To Include Dogs That Are NOT At The Wedding
Dog Cake Topper by Sin Bakery
You may choose a venue that doesn’t allow pets or they may just be the nervous type or simply too much to handle in crowds but that doesn’t mean they have to be left out completely. Here are some ideas on how you can still include them: • Engagement Photos Your engagment photos don’t have to be just you and your bride or groom. Many folks are including their dog in their engagement photo sessions. This may turn out to be the most fun you’ve ever had getting your photo taken! • Save The Date/Engagement Cards Who doesn’t like seeing photos of your dog (I know I would!). Use a great group shot from your engagement photo or get creative with your own photo with your dog wearing a sign that says “She said yes!”. • Personalized Wine Labels Include your best friend’s photo on a custom wine label from Newport Vineyards, to be served at the wedding or given as a gift at the rehearsal dinner. • Seating Assignments Rather than table numbers, categorize your seating plan by using pictures of your dog. • Tags on Your Bouquet If your pup can’t be with you, keep them close by tying a dog tag onto your bouquet. • Trash The Dress Session Dogs love to get dirty and that’s usually what happens during a trash the dress photo session. This has the potential to produce some amazing photos of you and your dog while wearing your wedding dress.

Spotting, Treating and Preventing Leptospirosis in Dogs Courtesty of VetStreet www.vetstreet.com
Y
ou may not think a walk in the woods or a swim in a lake with your dog might lead to illness, but it could — potentially for both of you. Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease, meaning it can be passed between animals and people and is caused by bacteria. Infected animals spread the bacteria in their urine, which can taint the soil and water. Drinking contaminated water or having contact with contaminated water or soil can lead to infection. In North America, leptospirosis has historically affected rural livestock, pet populations and wild animals like skunks, opossums and raccoons. Although cats can become infected with the bacteria, feline leptospirosis cases are rare. Signs, Diagnosis and Treatment Signs of leptospirosis can vary and often develop two to 12 days after
exposure to the bacteria. The most common signs include abdominal discomfort, decreased appetite and vomiting. In some cases, dogs may have a range of less specific flulike signs, including fever, muscle tenderness and depression. Because the organism settles in the kidneys and actually reproduces there, inflammation and even kidney failure can develop. Liver failure can be another consequence of infection. Call your veterinarian if your dog exhibits any of these signs — leptospirosis can be deadly if it’s not caught early. Antibiotic therapy can help minimize organ damage and the risk of spreading the bacteria to other animals and humans. The risk to people becomes minimal within 24 hours of starting your dog on antibiotic therapy, but appropriate precautions, such as avoiding contact with urine and wearing gloves, should still be taken. Treatment typically takes two
to three weeks. Dogs with signs of kidney and/or liver failure may also need hospitalization and supportive treatment, such as IV fluids. Prevention Don’t let your dog drink from standing water or swim in bodies of water that may be contaminated. And since humans can also become infected, handle dogs who may have been infected with care. Practice good hygiene, like frequent hand washing, and avoid contact with potentially contaminated urine. Additionally, there is a vaccine available that can help protect your dog from leptospirosis. Talk to your veterinarian about whether it might be right for your pet.

Sleep With Your Dog Written by Emily Yoffe • www.slate.com
I sleep with my pets. For more than 20 years, cats have shared my bed. My late cat, Shlomo, used to spend the night perched on top of my head, and I found this purring beret deeply comforting. When I just had cats, it never occurred to me that having pets in the bed was anything more than a harmless personal preference. Then I got a beagle and discovered the issue of allowing your dog to sleep with you is deeply fraught. Supposedly, bed privileges destroy the owner’s standing as pack leader. Allowing a dog in the bed, I learned, is a critical dog-rearing error, like giving brandy to quiet a cranky baby and ending up with an alcoholic teenager. The dogma was everywhere. A recent Washington Post interview with a dog trainer stated that a dog in bed is “a sign the dog is completely in charge. Get the
dog off your bed. It can make a bigger difference than anyone can imagine.” “How To Be Your Dog’s Best Friend”, the dog obedience manual by the Monks of New Skete, advises letting the dog sleep on the floor in your bedroom, but never in your bed. A dog trying to get too intimate should receive “slapped paws and a shove off”—not wholly surprising advice from celibate trainers. Despite this, my beagle, Sasha, got the opportunity to settle in for the night when my husband declared he was evicting from the bed by our two current cats, all 36 pounds of them. He explained, “In the middle of the night they run up and down my body, then they sit on my chest and crush it.” Since I am a light sleeper, I told my husband it was hard to believe his description of our cats’ ramblings. Ever the considerate
wife, I suggested he might be having nocturnal psychotic episodes. “Do I have to install a video camera?” he said. “They march up and down my body like they’re on a picket line, then they sit on me. They’re driving me crazy.” A few nights later, cats still in the bed, I got up at 4 a.m. to go to the bathroom. When I returned, there was Biscuit, sitting in the middle of my sleeping husband’s chest, peering into his open mouth as if about to perform periodontal surgery. Goldie was climbing up my husband’s legs. I was shaken. It was painful, but I agreed the next morning to banish the cats to the basement at night. That left an opening for Sasha. She liked to curl up like an armadillo between our pillows during the day, but Continued on page 21.

Go Ahead, Sleep With Your Dog Continued from page 16.
we had always moved her to her crate for the night. Despite the warnings of provoking deep status anxiety (my own), I decided to let her stay in the bed. I figured it was impossible that Sasha could wreak more havoc than she already was; she obviously wanted to be with us; and I missed the cats. Except for the occasional bout of rabbit-chasing during REM sleep, she has been a quiet and companionable bedmate. While her daytime behavior seems no worse, I have been troubled that I might be making a mistake that could come back to bite me. There is historical evidence that sleeping with pets is not necessarily aberrant behavior. According to The International Encyclopedia of Dogs, the xoloitzquintli, or Mexican hairless, was used in preAztec Mexico as both pet and bed warmer (and dinner—let’s not talk about that here). An account from a 19th-century explorer in Australia, as quoted in The Domestic Dog, describes how Aborigines were so devoted to their dingoes that the dogs were treated as members of the family and allowed to sleep in the hut. (The rock group Three Dog Night takes its name from the supposed Aboriginal practice of judging the coldness of an evening by the number of dogs required to keep warm.) And here in the land of the electric blanket and the 600-fill goose-down comforter, millions of pet owners are, like me, sacking out with their animals. A survey from the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association found that about 62 percent of American dog and cat owners keep their animals in the house at night, and of those, about half the cats and one-third of the dogs spend the night on the bed. Dr. John Shepard Jr., a physician at the Mayo Clinic Sleep Disorders Center, discovered so many of his haggard patients slept with their animals that he did a survey to see how much the pets disturbed their sleep: About half the pet sleepers said their animal woke them nightly. But here’s the good news. My unscientific survey of veterinary behaviorists concluded that as long as your pets are good at sleeping with you, it’s just fine to sleep with them. Pets are not going to get any uppity ideas just
because you’re all snoring together, they say. Dr. Marsha Reich, who has a private animal-behavior practice in Maryland, says she disagrees with the notion that your dog will try to dominate you if allowed in bed. “It has nothing to do with social status,” she says. The dog, like the owner, just likes being cozy and having a soft place to sleep. “Unless a dog growls when you roll over, I don’t have a problem with a dog in the bed.” Dr. Nicholas Dodman, author of “If Only They Could Speak” and director of the Animal Behavior Clinic at Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine, celebrates the “warm and fuzzy feeling” of all species curling up in bed together. This is not to say that some animals don’t abuse the privilege. He tells of one couple who came to him after their Yorkshire terrier, who liked to settle in with the wife when she went to bed early to read, took to lunging at the husband when he arrived. There was an obvious solution, and the couple chose it: The husband moved to the guest room. When this proved maritally unsatisfying, they turned to Dr. Dodman. He says such animals have to be re-educated by being placed in a crate at night, or even attached to a dog bed with a long line. The most common problem with sleeping with cats, says Dr. Lynne Seibert, a behaviorist at the Veterinary Specialty Center in Lynnwood, Wash., is—as my husband can attest—they don’t sleep. “Most of the issues I see are about exuberant play,” she says. “They’ve got a captive audience and end up pouncing and scratching.” The usual cause is that the cats have been home sleeping all day, leaving them ready to party all night.
Seibert recommends getting the cats more daytime stimulation and engaging in a play session with them before bed. Dog trainer Kathy Diamond Davis, in an article at veterinarypartner.com, writes that there’s no reason a wellbehaved dog shouldn’t sleep on the bed. However, she recommends having the dog trained to reliably obey a “get off the bed” command, to be used in particular for those moments when “people want to be intimate.” (For couples who don’t use that command, she does not deal with the psychological damage the humans suffer when they find even their most fervent lovemaking doesn’t wake the dog.) I was relieved to learn that Sasha can stay, but I realized, even if the experts had told me I shouldn’t let her, it wouldn’t have made any difference. Maybe some of us are just born with a desire to sleep with animals. (This could be a debate subject in the next presidential election.) Take my friend Nancy, who has slept with dogs since girlhood. So deep is this need that she and her husband spent years with their epileptic Dalmatian on the end of the bed. The dog regularly woke them in the middle of the night, in mid-seizure, flailing around and losing control of bodily functions. They became like paramedics, spending the night everalert so at the first twitch they could get the dog on the floor and covered in towels. Now Nancy has a Jack Russell terrier puppy. The puppy spends the night burrowed deep under their covers, attached to Nancy like a tick. Nancy is in heaven.

Fall Reading List
Late summer and early fall is the perfect time to spend outside enjoying a book in your backyard, at cafe’s or just before bed. The Animal Print has put together a list of some older books featuring animals that you may not have heard of but should! These books are some of the most beautiful, engaging and sometimes heartbeaking books we have read and we hope you get a chance to experience a few.
A Pack of Two
by Caroline Knapp Caroline Knapp has been celebrated as much for her fresh insight into emotional and psychological issues as she has been for her gifts as a writer. In Pack of Two, she brings the same perception and talent to bear on the rich, complicated terrain of human-animal relationships. In addition to mining her own experience with Lucille, Knapp speaks to a wide variety of dog people—from animal behaviorists and psychologists to other owners whose dogs have deeply affected their lives—about this emotionally complex, sometimes daunting, often profoundly healing alliance. Throughout, she explores the shift in canine roles from working partners to intimate companions and looks, too, at how this new kinship, this wordless bond, becomes a template for what we most desire ourselves. Available from most major book sellers.
The Dog Who Spoke with Gods by Diane Jessup When Elizabeth, a young pre-med, student happens upon Damien, a dog being used in laboratory research on her campus, she has no way of knowing
how drastically her life- and her beliefs- will be changed. Without meaning to, she slowly becomes drawn into the dog’s fate and is soon torn between the love and respect she has come to feel for Damien and the sense of loyalty and obligation she feels for the medical profession as well as her father and grandfather, both cardiac surgeons. With an uncanny ability to write convincingly about life from the point of view of a canine, Diane Jessup tells an extraordinary story of friendship and loyalty. Few writers have ever shown the world of man’s closest friend as clearly and movingly. For anyone who has ever loved a dog this is a must read. Available from most major book sellers.
The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein Have you ever wondered what your dog is thinking? Meet one funny dog—Enzo, the lovable mutt who tells this story. Enzo knows he is different from other dogs: most dogs love to chase cars, but Enzo longs to race them. He learns about racing and the world around him by watching TV and by listening to the words of his best friend, Denny, an up-andcoming race car driver, and his daughter, Zoë, his constant companion. Enzo finds that life is just
25
like being on the racetrack—it isn’t simply about going fast. And, applying the rules of racing to his world, Enzo takes on his family’s challenges and emerges a hero. In the end, Enzo holds in his heart the dream that Denny will go on to be a racing champion with his daughter by his side. For theirs is an extraordinary friendship—one that reminds us all to celebrate the triumph of the human (and canine) spirit.
Travels with Charley by John Steinbeck To hear the speech of the real America, to smell the grass and the trees, to see the colors and the light— these were John Steinbeck’s goals as he set out, at the age of fifty-eight, to rediscover the country he had been writing about for so many years. With Charley, his French poodle, Steinbeck drives the interstates and the country roads, dines with truckers, encounters bears at Yellowstone and old friends in San Francisco. Along the way he reflects on the American character, racial hostility, the particular form of American loneliness he finds almost everywhere, and the unexpected kindness of strangers. Available from most major book sellers. Continued on page 27.

{ Creature Feature: Canine Behavioral Services }
How did Canine Behavioral Services all begin? I started Canine Behavioral Services in 1996 in Sarasota, FL offering obedience training in owner’s backyards, teaching the dog to sit, stay, etc. Then, in the summer of 2006 while working full-time as a chef and part-time dog trainer, I moved to Westerly, RI. After 6 years of honing my craft on weekends, I attained my professional certification (CPDT-KA) in 2006 and it was then that I began working full time at training dogs. How many dogs are your own? I currently own 11 dogs in my pack with a new puppy on the way! The specialized training process we provide here deeply revolves around the fact that those 11 dogs innately know the best way to help each individual dog find behavioral balance. Do you have a specific methodology? Rather than short-change dogs and owners with a singular methodology – we custom design each program around what works best for that specific dog. While we wouldn’t rule out the potential benefit of any humane training tool, we always strictly follow the LIMA principle…Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive…always starting out with the gentlest method possible to reach the desired results. How does your training process work? Pack Dynamic Training relies on two specific known behavioral processes - Social Facilitation
and Allelomemetic Behavior. Simply put, these terms are commonly referred to as “monkey see, monkey do.” In our experience, there’s simply no better way to improve a dog with behavioral issues than with the help of other balanced dogs. But that’s only half of it because the other half is when we successfully train the owners to be the best packleader they can be for their dog. Would you say your process is very thorough? I’m confident in saying that our behavioral training programs are easily the most comprehensive available anywhere. Whether it’s private session training at the owners’ home, the socially enriching Canine Manners Camp or our highly specialized In-Patient Program that is widely known for its incredible ability to help even the most severe cases...we’ll work with owners until the desired results are reached. If you’re presented with an aggressive dog to work with, what’s the first thing you do? The most important thing any trainer should do first is to create a strong sense of safety for the dog as well as ensure that all other dogs, and humans, are safe too. Not until the dog actually feels safe will we begin assessing how deep the problem is. Our pack, being dogs themselves, have an innate way of deciphering the issues in the dogs that are contributing to the undesirable behavioral practices. It’s an incredible asset that comes standard in our Pack Dynamic Training.
Sponsored Editorial
Do you offer support for past clients after their dogs complete the program? Absolutely. Not only do we offer unlimited support with every one of our training programs but the vast majority of owners we work with utilize our canine sleepover service whenever they go away or just for a behavioral ‘reboot’ every few months. They tell us their dogs regularly need their “fix” of time spent with the pack. Do you only offer 45 day programs at your location? While the In-Patient Program is easily the most comprehensive board & train program available – we offer several specific private session programs for training at the owner’s home, a great Canine Manners Camp with awesome training results and an incredibly beneficial Basic Manners Puppy Workshop. You can find all the details including pricing, as well as sign up for any program on our website. Reading List (Continued): Picks For Kids Where The Red Fern Grows
by Wilson Rawls. Billy has long dreamt of owning not one, but two, dogs. So when he’s finally able to save up enough money for two pups to call his own—Old Dan and Little Ann—he’s ecstatic. Soon Billy and his hounds become the finest hunting team in the valley. Stories of their great achievements spread throughout the region, and the combination of Old Dan’s brawn, Little Ann’s brains, and Billy’s sheer will seems unbeatable.
The Underneath by Kathi Appelt Promises, regret, love, and loneliness are all facets of the book “The Underneath” by Kathi Appelt. Two kittens and an old hound dog give a centuries old serpent the chance to champion love, a choice she forfeited years prior with her own daughter. The story is filled with the Native American view of interconnectedness between people, animals, and plants. Kathi Appelt spins a harrowing yet keenly sweet tale about the power of love -- and its opposite, hate -- the fragility of happiness and the importance of making good on your promises.

How To Host an Outdoor Movie Night 28
with Dogs!
The weather is cooling and days are getting shorter which makes fall the ideal time to time to host a backyard movie night...with your dog! Organizing a backyard screening for your dog, your friends and your friend’s dogs is not as difficult as you might think!
Outdoor Projector
A good projector will be the main expense for your movie night but you can also set up your large screen TV. If you have AppleTV you can stream video or you can connect a DVD player (does anyone even use those anymore?!) My first choice is a projector which allows you to connect to a laptop and wifi speakers which will make all the difference in the quality of your sound. You can rent projectors locally at Quality Rental and Rhode Island Rentals.
Outdoor Movie Screen
Here’s What You’ll Need
I usually just fasten a thick white sheet or drop cloth to the side of the house or garage but any place will do. If you don’t have a convenient and accessible area to hang a backdrop, you can also rent a screen that comes ready to go. Be sure that whatever you use is stabilized in case the pups decide on an impromptu game of chase in the middle of the movie!
A Yard!
Snacks & Treats
You don’t need a big yard (although it helps) to host a doggie movie night but ideally you’ll want an enclosed one so everyone stays safe and controlled.
Of course it wouldn’t be a movie night without popcorn and candy but for this particular soiree you might want to provide something

Outdoor Movie Night With Dogs! Continued from page 28.
special for the pups as well. Ditch the chocolate for the humans to avoid any sneaky pups from “accidently” stealing it and set up a table with a popcorn machine (available for rent or purchase a simple air-popper) or freshly popped popcorn. Create ‘doggie bags’ for popcorn and dog treats as well. We have some amazing dog bakeries in RI where you can find all types of treats and pupcakes too. Your snack and treat offerings can be as simple or elaborate as you like. If you have any dogs that are food aggressive you can alternatively fill a large metal bucket with tennis balls and rope toys...or do both! I would suggest asking all your guests if their dogs are either food or toy aggressive in order to avoid a scuffle.
Beverages
For the pups, fill up a number of metal or plastic bowls with water and place around your yard. You can also have ice-cubes available on your snack table to give out as treats. For your human guests, it’s always nice to have a beer, wine or some kind of signature cocktail while watching a movie! Be sure to avoid glass because...dogs.
Pillows, Blankets and Dog Beds
You can never have enough bedding for your movie night so you may want to ask guest to bring some along! Think oversized pillows, lounge chairs, a few throws, blankets and of course don’t forget to add a few dog beds. You might be able to pick up some inexpensive items at Savers and I especially like to use waterproof table clothes under the softer bedding to keep everyone dry.
Marvelous
MARVIN Memorial Walk August 27, 2016– Goddard State Park, Warwick, RI – 10am-1pm
Lighting and Safety
While you don’t want too much ambient light to distract from the movie, it’s a good idea to have enough light for everyone to see where they’re going when they get up. Because dogs will be running around, try to keep all lighting such as twinkle lights and lanterns above the ground. You can find some inexpensive solar LED lights on Amazon as well as battery operated options as well.
Sh** Happens
Be sure to have plenty of poop bags on hand for your guests (we love the bone shaped dispensers) as well as a designated trash can, preferably away from all the action!
Movie Ideas
You don’t have to have a dog themed film for your outdoor doggie movie night, however it can’t hurt! If you’re looking for something on the unusual side check out: The Lobster 2015: In a dystopian society, single people must find a mate within 45 days or be transformed into an animal of their choice. Heart of a Dog 2015: Musician and performance artist Laurie Anderson reflects on the deaths of her husband Lou Reed, her mother and her beloved dog. Denali 2015: A short 7 minute film about a man, his dog, and saying goodbye.

Hello, I’m Snow white! I’ve been told that i’m stunning because i’m an all-white, turkish angora with long fur and big green eyes. You’d never know what a hard start in life I had, even though I’m only three years-old. I was found abandoned with my five babies in a cardboard box in a walmart parking lot and in rough shape.
Hi there, I’m Bonnie! I’m an adorable retriever mix puppy and I’m yellow and white. I was born right around christmastime, so i’m only six months-old! I was saved from a high-kill shelter and transported to egapl, where I’ve enjoyed making friends with my fellow puppies and humans.
Hi there, I’m Travis! I was born at christmastime, so i’m still a puppy! I’m a light yellow, male retriever mix so i should be medium-sized once I’m full-grown. I came to egapl after being rescued from a southern kill-shelter. Now I’m a bouncy, cheerful pup.
Hi there, I’m Peter! I am a talkative black and white tuxedo domestic short-hair boy. I’m about ten weeks-old and i have grown up in a foster home with my now adopted siblings. We were separated from our mom at an early age, but our surrogate cat mom took great care of us.

My name is Autumn and I’m about 5-6 years old (as of march 2016). I’m a friendly tortoiseshell cat who rolled all over for the human who took some pictures of me recently. I don’t mind spending my time alone or with other cats, but I would love to find a human who wants to be mine!
My name is Fifi and I’m about 2 years old (as of may 2016). I am affection and enjoy being held. I’m also a mommy and my baby, Felicia, is my little girl. We need to be adopted together. Would you take us home with you?
My name is Devin and I’m about 3 years old (as of may 2016). I’ve been living at the shelter for awhile and would really like to find my forever home. I like to play with people and am generally relaxed. I also get along with other cats.
My name is Felicia and i’m about 1 year old (as of may 2016). I am mostly white with some other colors and the people at the shelter think that I have beautiful blue eyes. I can be shy and nervous without my mom. Since I am my mommy’s little girl, I need to be adopted with her. Would you take us home with you?

I’m Amaya, a shepherd mix who is approximately 2 years old. I’m very cautious of strangers and will bark at them, but I’m not aggressive in any way. I’m very affectionate and loving. So far I get car sick, but this, may pass. I will need a patient and confident owner.
Hi, folks, Bentley here! I’m looking for my forever home and my forever people. I know you’re out there. It’s just that I’ve been waiting for so long. I came into rescue as a puppy back in the spring of 2010. So that makes me about 6 years old. Don’t get me wrong - they’re really nice here, but you know...I’d just really like my very own family.
Don’t be fooled by my name. They call me El Jefe, but i’m really the sweetest, most friendly and lovable softie. I’m easy going and outgoing - I love to meet new people and explore new situations - I make friends everywhere I go - no one can resist my charms! I’m smart, affectionate, eventempered and gentle.
Hi, my name is Pumpkin and I’m ready to be picked...Picked to be all yours that is! I am a sweet and happy-go-lucky puppy that’s ready to join your family. I am a labrador retriever mix that was born around 3/28/2016. I was found as a stray that no one wanted. I am good with other dogs and should be fine with children.

Hello I’m Choco! I loves to meet new people, especially when they scratch my bum and rub my face. I’m very smart and treat motivated. I know my commands and I’m house trained. I walk well on a leash and love to ride in the car.
Hi, my name is Lush. I’m a 1 1/2 yr old neutered male. I was found as a stray with a healed broken tail. I’m a relaxed cat who lounges around most of the day. I go in and out of my carrying crate easily and ride well in the car. I can be a bit feisty so it would be best that I am the only child, at least until I get acclimated in a home.
My name is Craven. I have a long body of a Basset Hound but the face of a Beagle! Im sweet and love to get attention. I needs a place to stay! I prefer to be in a home where I won’t be left alone a lot. I would be ideal for a retired couple or a stay at home mom!

Strategies for Surviving the Loss of a Pet By Dr. Marty Becker DVM www.vetstreet.com
After more than 30 years as a practicing veterinarian, and many, many personal losses, I’ve learned some strategies that can help pet owners who are dealing with the loss of a beloved companion. While we veterinarians do everything we can to keep your pet healthy and happy, euthanasia is often a necessary — and very difficult — part of our job. But we are all proud of this part of our work; we not only ease suffering, but we are almost alone in the medical field in actively ending pain, often at great emotional toll to ourselves. My professional familiarity with death means I also know a great deal about grief — my own, of course, and also that of the families whose pets I have looked after throughout their lives. Helping those who remain behind is also part of my work, and over the years, I have learned a few useful strategies for coping with this loss.
Give Yourself Time and Permission to Grieve
In general, grown-ups don’t like to cry in public, and we don’t like to share how much we’re hurting. But it’s extremely important to remind yourself that love is love and that loving a pet is no different from loving a person — and when you lose your pet, you will feel like crying. Your feelings are not wrong, and you need time to work through your grief. Don’t try to minimize the bond you and your pet shared. No matter what anyone else says or thinks or what you were raised to believe, I am confident that your pet loved you, truly. Let yourself believe this, too, and don’t rush to “get over it.” You can’t hurry grief, so be kind to yourself and let yourself feel what’s in your heart.
Take Care of Yourself
Losing someone we love can be exhausting, emotionally and physically. While you are grieving, it’s important that you eat well and get enough sleep. You’ll do better in the short run and certainly in the long run if you look after your own health right now. Stick to healthy, good foods, and resist the impulse to go for the junk because it’s there and it’s easy. Comfort food can be good food, too, of course but again, try to stick with healthy choices and appropriate portions. And don’t be afraid to touch base with your doctor if you feel yourself struggling to get back to normal. Don’t try to “gut it out” — experts say you’ll just prolong your grief.
Seek Out Support
This is a great time to call a friend. The pet-loving people in your life understand what you’re going through and they’ll be there for you. Don’t
be shy about talking with people who care about you and who will offer genuine sympathy. Ask for help if you need it, even with mundane tasks; if you can’t deal with picking up your pet’s ashes or packing up his toys, ask a friend to help, for example. If you need more support than friends can give, your veterinarian may be able to help you find a pet-loss support group or a pet-loss hotline (many veterinary schools and colleges have them). There are also petcentered websites for memorials, some of which have staffed pet-loss support chat rooms — seek them out.
Make Plans for a Memorial
Plant a tree, make a memorial donation to an animal charity, scrapbook a memorial … you’ll know what works for you. I recently spoke at a conference of pet-loss professionals about the strength of the human-animal bond, and while I was there, I learned a lot, too. There are many choices in memorials, from the simple and private to the most elaborate. It’s all about what you feel comfortable doing. At our Almost Heaven Ranch, we have a graveyard for our animals, and celebrating their lives is an important part of the Becker family traditions.

Abby: I’d like to be reincarnated as my Granny Anne because she’s got killer legs. Pope: I was definitely a 90’s pop boy band back up dancer in a former life.
Where is your favorite place? Abby: Anywhere along the Rhody coast. Pope: The refrigerator!
