Chanel, World’s Oldest Dog, Dies

A wire-haired Dachshund that held the record as the world’s oldest dog recently died at the age of 21 - or 147 in dog years. Chanel died of natural causes at her owners’ home in Port Jefferson Station, NY. Guinness World Records officials honored Chanel as the world’s oldest dog last May at a 21st birthday bash in Manhattan. Owners Denice and Karl Shaughnessy adopted Chanel from a pet shelter in Virginia when she was 6 weeks old. In her later years, Chanel wore tinted goggles for her cataracts and favored sweaters because she was sensitive to the cold. They say she remained lively for her age.

U.S. Representative Thaddeus McCotter has introduced the Humanity and Pets Partnered Through the Years (“HAPPY”) Act, legislation to allow individuals to claim tax deductions for qualified pet care expenses. The bill would allow any taxpayer who legally owns one or more domesticated animals to take an annual income tax deduction of up to $3,500 for pet care expenses, including veterinary care costs. Pet care can be expensive—and in these trying economic times, families all over the country have been forced to give up their pets because of financial hardship. The HAPPY Act is important because it will help Americans provide their pets with the medical attention and quality of life they deserve, while also ensuring that more pets get to remain in their loving homes and don’t wind up on the streets or in the already overburdened shelter system. Action Needed: Write to your U.S. representative today to urge him or her to support and co-sponsor the HAPPY Act, H.R. 3501.

Dog Mountain Continued from page 11 12 Not exactly the exposure/reputation she was looking for. Crown is a beautiful puppy that has an amazing personality to match. This was Crown’s first truck ride. After picking up my son, Cass suggested that we stop by Dog Mountain as it was on our way home. Dog Mountain is both beautiful and secluded. You are encouraged to bring your companion(s) and experience the chapel, art gallery, agility course and hiking trails. The chapel along with Stephen Huneck’s artwork make this a do not miss location for pet lovers. The three of us loved the agility course. I was able to convince my son to role model for the dog. I fell over holding my side on more than one occasion as Cass completed obstacles. All the while, Crown sat there in amazement looking at his young master jump over bars...six inches high. Cass also scaled teeter totters and ramps at a vicious rate. Ultimately, Crown and I decided that for a human Cass was pretty agile. We’re planning to enter him in some shows and hope to bring home some blue ribbons.

Humpty Dumpty

When it comes to dogs and cats, humping is normal. Many people are embarrassed or even horrified when their pet humps something or someone. Perhaps the discomfort stems from the fact that humping is slightly frowned upon within the average human social setting. I mean, imagine running into an old friend you havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t seen in a long time, and he starts humping away! While this seems insane, and potentially grounds for arrest, within human social behavior â&#x20AC;&#x201C; it is quite acceptable within the social behavior of many other species. Dogs and cats hump for many reasons. One reason that everyone is aware of is, obviously, sexual. Intact (or unneutered) males who hump during reproduction are driven by the hormone testosterone. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t believe further explanation is required for this one. Another sexual reason for humping could be because, simply, it feels good. Male, female,

neutered, or intact: dogs and cats could hump other animals, stuffed animals, pillows, or even you as a form of, well, pleasure. Pets are probably just less shy about these things than most humans are, so it makes us feel uncomfortable when it happens in front of (or to!) the in-laws. One of my cats repeatedly humps his cat brother, despite the brother being slightly less enthusiastic about the whole scenario. Both are neutered and the humpee is clearly the boss, yet the humper continues to hump because he likes it! Humping is also one way dogs determine rank within a social group. Dogs may hump when they meet each other for the first time, are reacquainted after time apart, or simply as a part of normal interaction. A female could hump the head of a male. A neutered male could hump the

side of another neutered male. Those details simply don’t matter – it’s more about one animal being physically higher than the other, and therefore establishing a higher rank in that particular interaction. Now, keep in mind, the one who “comes out on top” can change from day to day, from event to event, or from dog to dog. It can be complicated, but if you just let it all unfold and pay close attention, you will learn a great deal about your dog and their relationships with other dogs. Another reason for humping is displaced excitement. Often when dogs get overly excited, such as during play or when a favorite guest visits, they may just start humping. It tends to be a more confident, pushy, intact dogs, but any dog can do this. My friend and I brought her recently adopted puggle home and were playing a rough and tumble game with his toys, when he suddenly wrapped his little puggle arms around her leg in a death grip and went to town. She was horrified and attempted to pry the eager little man off, as I laughed hysterically. Between gasps, I tried to explain he wasn’t assaulting her – he just got over excited with the events of the

day and the play, plus had some testosterone reserves 15 after his neuter. Over the next week or so, his excited humping slowly tapered off, much to her relief. Okay, we have established some reasons why animals hump and the fact that humping is completely normal. So, how do you know when or if you should interfere with your humping pal? There are times when dogs need to work things out for themselves, and humans should just stay out of it. The social boundaries, relationships, and communication they establish with each other can be lost to humans, so often the best course of action is to just let them work it out for themselves. However, there are situations where inappropriate behavior must be addressed, and humping must be interrupted to ensure everyone’s safety. Example 1: Two dogs have their first play date. One dog persistently, but playfully, humps another dog to the point of being really annoying. There is a point where the humpee needs to stand up for themselves by snapping around and saying “Fine! Stop humping me!” This subtle dog language is not something humans can accomplish and it is important for both dogs to learn how to clearly, and effectively communicate with each other. If you interfere, the humper may never learn when enough is enough, the humpee may never learn how to communicate annoyance, and appropriate play may never happen. But keep in mind, if the humpee is elderly, sick, or frail (such as with hip dysplasia), they may not be able to fend off unwanted humping and your intervention may be required. Example 2: You run into an acquaintance and her dog on the bike path. Her dog sniffs around, and then begins humping your dog. Your dog has snapped around, growled, and keeps moving away. Your dog is clearly communicating in an appropriate way, and the humper is just not getting the message, yet his mom is oblivious or says “Oh, he’s fine. He’s just playing.” In this scenario, a fight is inevitable – one dog is being a bully while the other is being

appropriate. Either stop the humper from humping, move your own dog out of the way, or politely end the conversation and move on. Individual situations must be evaluated on an individual basis. But in general, if the dogs are just being rough, maybe a growl or air snap here and there, let the scenario play out. If you sense the situation is escalating, step in. Don’t let your own shyness or embarrassment get in the way of allowing your dog the opportunity to practice communicating in normal dog behavior. Remember, your dog is a dog – let him be a dog! But, then again, if it’s on your future mother-in-law’s linen pant leg – you may just want to step in an put an end to it! Happy humping! Xylitol: More Trick Than Treat We are heading into that time of year when candy, baked goods and all kinds of treats begin to fill our homes and our stomachs. To avoid that winter bulge, many of us are buying sugar substitutes for baking and treats. While a sugar-free treat for you might sound like a healthy thing to do, if it contains Xylitol it could be quite dangerous for your pet. Xylitol is a natural sweetener that is used as a replacement for sugar in such things as candy, toothpaste, breath fresheners and chewing gum. Made from birch trees, it seems to have lots of benefits for humans – sweet taste without all the calories, and no side effects. However, researchers at the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center warn that

Xylitol can have potentially deadly effects for dogs. For some reason, it increases the blood insulin level in canines, which results in a corresponding decrease in blood sugar. Veterinarian Dr. Eric Dunayer with the Animal Poison Control Center says problems can develop within thirty minutes of ingestion of Xylitol, and can include depression, vomiting, loss of coordination and seizures, and possibly even liver failure. So how much Xylitol does it take to make a dog sick? No one is sure exactly what the threshold is, but hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, has developed in doses as low as 20mg in a fifty-pound dog. To put that in perspective, one piece of sugar-free gum may contain as much as two grams of xylitol, or one hundred times the amount shown to cause problems in that fifty-pound dog. There is no antidote for Xylitol, but if you know your pet has eaten something containing the sweetner very recently, the best approach is to induce vomiting using a three percent hydrogen peroxide solution. Monitor your dog very closely. If you see any problems, call your veterinarian immediately. Prompt treatment could save your pet’s life. This is a time of year when lots of treats such as candy, mints and chewing gum are in the house. It’s not unusual for dog owners to want to share some treats with their pets. Just be sure to keep those sugar-free candies, gum and baked goods away from your dogs – in fact, any animal. You may think you’re doing your pet a favor by sharing something sweet, but what is relatively healthy and harmless for us could cost your best friend its life. If you think that your pet may have ingested a potentially poisonous substance, call (888) 426-4435 (Animal Poison Control) or call you vet imediately.

Met School Students Teach Shelter Pits! Approximately five years ago Richard Sousa, animal control supervisor and animal control officer for 36 years in the city of Providence, was approached by Matthew McCormick, a student from the Met School in Providence who was interested in becoming an animal control officer and wanted to know if he would be a mentor. That was the beginning of a relationship with the Met School. Matthew put his heart and soul into learning every aspect of being an ACO, even going through the National Animal Control Academy on his own. Matthew was one of the youngest people hired as an ACO in Rhode Island and is currently an ACO for the town of Coventry. Through the years the Met students have worked with Providence Animal Control by facilitated license drives and producing public service notices. With the cooperation of Dr. Ernest Finocchio of the RISPCA who donated his services and rabies vaccine they held a free rabies clinic for over three hundred disadvantaged residents of the city of Providence . Richard Sousa, animal control supervisor has been an animal control officer for 36 years for the city of Providence has probably been an animal control office longer then any in Rhode Island. Currently he has a variety of duties including being in charge of volunteers and volunteer programs at providence animal control.

This current school year Richard, who along with his animal control duties heads the volunteer programs at Providence Animal Control. His is currently a Mentor to Jordan Roberts and Algenis Martinez. Jordan approached Richard and said he was interested in helping to get more animals adopted for Providence Animal Control. Jordan began by taking pictures of dogs that were up for adoption and designing flyers with their information and posting them through the city. Algenis said he was interested in raising funds for animal control and is working on building a dog house to be raffled off. After conferring with Susan Parker, obedience instructor for Dynamic Dog Training Services, Richard and Susan decided to begin Susan’s award winning program known as “Out of the Pits and Into the Ritz where Jordan and Algenis will work directly with shelter pit bulls teaching the dogs how to obtain their AKC Canine Good Citizen Certificates before adoption.

25 Susan has branched out and offered the training program to animal shelters throughout New England. Graduates of her program receive their AKC Canine Good Citizen Certificate. Many of the pit bulls have even gone on to be pet therapy dogs.. Many people think of pit bulls as “throw away dogs.” Once they’re turned into shelters, many are “sitting on death row” because no one wants to adopt them or have fears based on what they’ve heard in the news. “You don’t see our dogs in the news,” tells Parker. Out of the Pits and into the Ritz Academy has a 100 percent success rate.”

“Out of the Pits and Into the Ritz” Pit Bull Training Academy is not your average sit and stay class. The program, has already graduated hundreds upon hundreds of pit bulls over the years. Each pit bull that goes through the training learns how to deal with other dogs, people and noises they might hear in public including such things as baby carriages. It’s all to accustom the dog to what they might run into in normal every day life. It also teaches basic obedience, like the usual sit stay, down and come. “We are promoting responsible pit bull ownership,” “They’re not vicious killers,” notes Susan and her husband Harry who have been pit bull owners for many years and have a great deal of experience working professionally with these dogs. Together they also created The Little Rhodie Bully Breed Club Inc. which is a non-profit organization aimed at Promoting responsible ownership of the American Pit Bull Terrier. The Little Rhodie Bully Breed Club Inc. reaches out to community and focuses their help on assisting shelter pit bull placement as well as training.

This program will definitely help Providence Animal Control dogs get adopted quicker. Without this training they will sit in the shelter and start to deteriorate due to stress or lack of exercise. Greta “Didn’t you ever hear of ‘euthanasia’?” My wife speaks for Greta our Italian Greyhound, like Edgar Bergen for Charlie McCarthy. The breed is expected to live for a dozen years, a baker’s dozen at the most, and our Greta was pushing sweet sixteen. Her fur had lost its luster. Her tail had a little break in it and looked discouraged. Even so, she hadn’t completely lost her joie de vivre or her alpha love of dominance. She had a peremptory bark to let me know she refused to come in or go out until she was good and ready. “It’s all up to me,” she seemed to declare. IGs aren’t supposed to yap, and they are famous for being timid. Not our Greta. She could even snap at me, her closest ally, if I stooped to pick her up before she was ready for the next move in her routine. “I’m not quite finished with food and drink, not ready for bed, not interested in a walk just now,” she said in body language. I haven’t the impulse here to compose a biography of our adventures together, only to list them quickly. The motor trips to Maine or to New Jersey, the sneak visits to restaurants, hotels, even museums. I passed her off as my seeing eye dog in a chic art gallery, and we were quite an item in the coffeehouses of any number of towns, where she would share my fancy java. “Don’t bother to wash the cup,” I would say to the server, “Greta has licked it quite clean.” What I do want to explore is the final chapter of my life with Greta.

In case you haven’t guessed, she was named for Garbo, who was famously aloof and a bit lazy, slouching in her silks and velvets on upholstered sofas and love seats. I bet there are plenty of other IGs named for the greatest of movie stars, who liked to be alone in her chambers. My Greta preferred her own room. I claimed she thought deep thoughts all by her lonesome self while I ran my business errands, worrying about getting home in time for her ablutions. But I am hoping to be able to recount the last days in the life and times of my pet, companion, mascot, and alter ego, in the forthcoming chapter. Greta was a familiar sight on Narrow River and in downtown Wakefield. All summer long, on my canoe, in my kayak, on speedboats, at the sandbar at low tide at the dunes, among the outdoor cafe tables throughout South County, my slim, aging, Italian Greyhound turned heads, endearing herself to young and old alike. Here is the tale of her life and her passing in South County summertimes, in Providence in wintertime, and throughout the Atlantic region on vacation weekends and various holidays. Alas, our beloved pets, unless they are parrots, leave us too soon, bereft but blessed.... “You were quite a pair. A chapter of your life is over and done with.” Noah said this to me on the sidewalk, but he meant no harm. Only to acknowledge a loss, as cafe chums are wont to do:

I have found that many of us have attachments to pets, worry about them, wonder how we’ll deal with their absence from our routines, our lives. “What has happened to her soul?” I ask Noah, who is something of a mystic in his way. A sidebar, a tangent: Noah, a rebel from his Jewish heritage, he returned to it and joined the Lubavitch movement in Providence, bringing a combination of knowledge, technical skill, an obsessive nature, a mixture of memories and r esentments, and withal a friendly and benevolent nature. Noah can come up with wondrous, oddball insights. “She sheds her bones and rises into another sphere of existence. She checks out her familiar family to see how you’re doing, and then rises above it all, stretches like an awakening dog, and enjoys her newfound freedom and liberty.” Noah really did say these things to me, and I took a strange instant comfort from his words. Because I was concerned about what was in fact happening to her remains. You want to protect a beloved body from harm, from disgrace, as if in an ancient Greek fable. You must scatter some dirt and not leave it to the ravens on the field. And yet, that is exactly what we have to do, one way or another,

let it go where it must, but in hopes that the spirit can hover above the clouds and look down on the scenes of a lifetime as in an old movie fantasy. I wish I could keep and share this account lightly, unsentimentally, briefly, finally, and matter-of-factly, but all I can do is gather up these scattered details and let them, too, take off. I’m not fully who I was before Greta took off but then again, I was somebody else before Greta came to me, and anyway, every alliance in this world is temporary, and what stays below is the next page, the turning of the scroll, the stirring of the roots in the soil of the seasons. Now, you must know that the Italian Greyhound is touted as an artist’s hound. It figured in the tombs of the Pharaohs, in the Renaissance portraits, in Rosa Bonheur’s gilded age in French painting...and now, at Rhode Island School of Design. My Greta lives on, in some sort of a way, in the various sketches,images, and assorted illustrations of my students. In fact, at a recent museum fund-raiser, it was a collection of portraits of Greta that earned a place and a purchase...If art isn’t about the survival of souls, what is?

Lucy was taken off the streets by a good Samaratin so she could have her babies in a safe place. As is always the case, the kittens will be adopted but mom is left behind. Lucy is afraid when she first meets you but she warms up to people very quickly. Please consider taking her into your home as a family member.

Roscoe is a big 6 month old, 15-20 pound, half Chihuahua and half Papillon mix male. Roscoe is tan with a black mussel and white paws. Roscoe is an absolute joy to be around he is very much a puppy and will steel you heart. Roscoe is very playful and needs an active family to call his own. I don’t recommend small children.

Saturday and Sunday (8am-2pm) are PERFECT for volunteering or any night after work perhaps, we are open until 10pm weeknights (except Monday).
