{Letter From The Editor}

O

ver the years, there have been a few questions that I’m often asked during the late summer. Recently, I was again asked the top three: 1. Where can I find a pet-friendly restaurant? 2. I’m looking for a pet-friendly apartment, any ideas? and 3. Just exactly when are the “dog days” of summer? In honor of my top three, I’ve decided to dedicate this issue to answering them all.

To find pet-friendly restaurants, we needed to hit the streets to help answer these questions and I’m happy to report that there are far more pet-friendly eateries than you might think. In fact, many of restaurants that we contacted, (with outdoor seating) allow your dog to sit along side. Of course what we also found is that some places are a bit more “friendly” than others and go the extra mile to even include a doggie menu! (Read our guide on page 10).

Pet-friendly apartment hunting is a but more complicated, but we have been digging up some wonderful tips and resources that could very well make the difference between landing that dream apartment or settling for something less. (Learn some great tips on page 18).

To simply answer question number three…we have officially hit the (new) dog days of summer. The days that were traditionally referred to as the dog days of summer were from July 3 to August 11, but according to my research the 40 days following August 4th would be the “new” dog days of summer. Love at the Dog Park!

The (New) Dog Days Of Summer

The specific days that were traditionally referred to as the dog days of summer were from July 3 to August 11. It was on these days that the Romans saw the Dog Star, Sirius, join the sun at sunrise and disappear from the sky all night. While the dog days of summer are still often considered to be July 3 to August 11, these are no longer the exact dates when Sirius joins the sun in the daytime sky. Because the Earth slowly wobbles on its axis, which is called precession, Sirius does not start rising with the sun in North America until more than a month later, on August 4.

So the 40 days following August 4 would be the “new” Dog Days of Summer, ending on September 12.

Swallowed Toad Too Tough To Die Australia: A cane toad has confirmed its species’ extraordinary talent for survival by emerging unscathed after being swallowed by a dog and spending 40 minutes in the animal’s stomach. The toad was vomited up by the dog and has since been christened Spew by staff at an Australian animal clinic. Bella wolfed down the unfortunate amphibian which hopped onto the grass after the dog’s owner tossed some leftover meat pies on to his backyard lawn in Palmerston, Darwin AUS. Cane toads have toxic glands in their skin which can kill pets and wild animals which try to eat them. Bella’s owner said it was probably Bella’s greed that saved her life because she had swallowed the toad whole rather than chewing it.

Walk & Wag Your Way To

Weight Loss…

In The RIVMA Walk N’ Wag Challenge The Rhode Island Veterinary Medical Association (RIVMA) Walk ‘N Wag Challenge is a fitness initiative inspired by other human health/fitness initiatives in Rhode Island.

The mission of the Walk ‘N Wag Challenge is to use the human-animal bond to improve the health of dogs and their owners and to create awareness of the growing canine obesity problem. The program harnesses the spirit of teamwork and competition among dog owners as a fun way to achieve healthier lifestyles for people and their dogs.

The challenge runs for eight weeks, kicking off on Saturday, September 13, at the Providence Animal Rescue League’s Annual Pet Walk at Roger Williams Park. There will be two additional organized walks for participants in locations around the state to help build momentum and team spirit during the eight week Challenge.

Walkers will be asked to keep a log of weight lost and/or distance walked for the duration of the program and submit totals to RIVMA at the end of the eight weeks. Winners in various categories will be announced during the award ceromony at the Newport Art Museum where terrific prizes will be awarded.

18 years and dogs over 1 year of age. For the distance category, participants can be 14 years or older and dogs 9 months or older. All dogs should be current on Rabies vaccination as required by law. You should contact your doctor prior to starting any exercise program. Likewise, if your pet has any medical conditions you should discuss your pet’s health with your veterinarian before starting the challenge.

How the Program Works

Participants register by mail (last day for mail in registration is September 2nd) or fax for a $10 fee per owner-dog pair, $15 per team. Teams consist of more than one owner-dog pair. Walk-in in registration is also available during the Providence Animal Rescue Leagues Pet Walk on September 13th. The registration fee includes a pedometer, bandana, log sheets, weekly e-mails, and eligibility to win prizes. People can participate in two ways, individually as owner-dog pairs, or in teams. Owners and dogs don’t have to be evenly matched. Teams with multiple owners will have captains whose job is to coordinate with the team members, collect results from members, and submit the teams results at the end of the competition.

Citron boasts a full doggy menu with various all-natural options and features animal favorites such as bistro steak and pup-cicles. The pet food, provided by Dogs in Harmony Bakery, is free from antibiotics, growth hormones, and preservatives. The menu for pet owners also features all natural foods…and while our Cover Dog Winner “George,” was lucky enough to sit inside and get a few licks of Citrons signature dish, “Everything Tuna” (pictured below) - it should be noted that pets are not normally allowed inside.

Situated in Union Station Plaza, the location is the perfect destination after a long walk in Waterplace Park. The secluded patio provides a pleasant atmosphere for pets and their owners to dine and relax. Your pet’s health and happiness is our passion!

Participants can compete in categories of distance walked, pounds lost, or both. Participants should weigh their dogs every two to four weeks and record it on their log sheet. Owner weights can be measured on a daily basis…but don’t worry, your weight does not need to be seen by anyone except yourself.

How To Weigh Your Dog

1.) Weigh-in stations will be available at the kick-off event, as well as at the October and November events.

2.) Go to a participating veterinarian to weigh your dog.

3.) If you are able to lift your dog, you can use a home scale.

Weigh yourself holding your dog and then subtract your weight to get your dog’s weight.

At the end of the competition, participants and team captains tally and submit their results by mail, fax, or by e-mail. Prizes will be awarded for team and dog-owner pair who lost the largest percentage of weight and walked the farthest distance.

How Will Categories Be Judged?

Because the wide range of sizes in dogs and people, weight loss will be judged based on percentage of body weight rather than actual pounds lost for the individual. Teams will be judged on average percentage of weight loss and distance walked per participant to account for differences in size of teams.

means the act of eating feces and it is quite normal, sometimes necessary, for many animals.

Poop eating is a topic that comes up regularly from clients desperate to put an end to it. I understand how they feel. When my dog saunters into the room with litter stuck to her nose, smacking her teeth like she just raided a box of Block Island taffee, it makes me gag.

And doesn’t she always come straight over and try to give me a big kiss? So how do you get your pooch to stop treating poo like Tootsie Rolls after a Bristol parade? Well, that depends on what the root cause of the poop eating is.

So put down your sandwich it’s time to talk about eating poop.

Some animals eat feces to obtain additional vitamins or minerals. For example, rabbits and Guinea pigs produce a special type of poo (called cecotropes) which they consume directly from their bodies in a sort of “second time around” process.

Think of a cow chewing its cud, except the order of events is a little different. Baby elephants consume their mother’s

feces and some monkeys consume the feces of other animals for the purpose of obtaining additional nutrients. Alternatively, intestinal parasites like tapeworms may be stealing a percentage of nutrients, causing your pet to eat poo as an attempt to meet their body’s needs or to satisfy hunger. Similarly, a poor quality diet may not contain the proper nutrients or may not be right for your particular pet, forcing him to compensate.

Further, some medical conditions prevent the body from properly processing and absorbing nutrients, resulting in deficiencies. The best solution? Schedule an exam with your vet as soon as possible.

Once you rule out medical causes of your fecal-consumption woes, chances are it is behavioral. And there are lots of behavioral culprits.

First, your pet may be imitating what they saw their mothers do. It is quite normal for mothers to eat their babies’ poops. For example, kittens initially do not have the ability

to urinate or defecate on their own so their mothers have to stimulate them by licking. Additionally, many animals eat their offspring’s feces to keep the nest or den clean or to prevent attracting predators.

Second, there is a chance you may have inadvertently taught your pet to do this. I have seen dogs consume urine and feces to “remove” the mess before their parents find it. Now, keep in mind the idea that a pet should “know better” presumes pets believe poop or pee to be a vile or disgusting thing. In fact, as you should know by the end of this article, animals do not have a problem with poo and wee. Humans have a problem with poo and wee. So why does your pet have that guilty look on their low hanging head? Maybe, your pet knows: “I get in trouble when my person enters the room and there is a mess on the floor.” Don’t believe me? Try taking your pet out of the room, put the mess on the floor yourself, leave the room, and let your pet investigate the mess on their own. Wait a little while, come in, and act just like you would if your pet had created the mess themselves. They may simply be afraid and not properly trained. Additionally, some pets learn to consume urine or feces as a form of negative attention seeking. In cases like this, your pet may have actually trained YOU! If you suspect something like this may be going on with your pet, contact a qualified trainer or behaviorist for help.

Then, there are the pets who eat poop because, brace yourself, it tastes…good? Yes, that’s right. If this is the case with your pet, one solution may simply be regular scooping of yards and litter boxes, leashing, training, and supervision. Also, you can try feeding the poop “producer” something to make the poop taste bad. For example, feeding pineapple to your dog can deter them from eating their own poo. Products like “Distase” or “FOR-BID” are other things you can add to a cat or dog’s food to make the resulting feces less, ah, palatable. I can’t possibly imagine what tastes worst than poop, but apparently these things do just that. Just be sure to check the indications to determine what species the products are safe for.

If you know your pet is properly trained and the cause of your pet’s poop munching isn’t medical, you may just need to accept that dogs eat poop. They eat poop from cats, rabbits, deer, birds, horses, and many other animals. Warm or frozen, fresh or stale, poop appears to be a good time. Your dog is not alone. Deer, gorillas, cats, pigs, rodents, pandas, koalas, hippos, insects, and many other animals all enjoy snacking on excrement.

So the next time your dog walks into the room licking her chops with little brown bits in her teeth, just take a deep breath (through your mouth, of course), and think to yourself “This is normal. All dogs eat poop.” And look at the bright side – at least you can skip scooping the litter box a bit longer!

WITH PETS: Keys for Success

With the difficult economy and the continuing rise in the number of home foreclosures, more and more pet owners are facing a new reality: They must find a pet-friendly rental or find a new home for their furry or feathered family member. It’s a difficult situation that’s resulting in a sharp jump in the number of animals coming through the doors of animal shelters across the nation, and New England is no different.

he Animal Print recently spoke with several realtors, landlords, and pet owners who happen to live in rentals – all of whom shared their knowledge and experiences to help those animal lovers who are seeking a new pet-friendly home.

“I think there are a couple of keys to finding a pet-friendly rental,” explained Geno Storey, a Boston area realtor. “I think the most important factor is the pet’s behavior and training, combined with responsible pet ownership. Many landlords who generally do not allow pets will make an exception if the pet is well behaved and the owner is responsible. “You, as a potential renter, need to demonstrate that you’re someone who they want living on their property. Bring your pet along to a meeting to show that he is well behaved and of even temperament. Provide references from trainers, your veterinarian and anyone else who can attest to your skills as an owner and your pet’s good behavior. You should also be willing to provide training certificates, veterinary health certificates – things most responsible owners should have anyways.”

Storey added, “Be honest about your pet’s behavior, temperament and training, and be honest with yourself. If you’re thinking about living in a multi-unit home or apartment, and your dog is a chronic barker, then this is not an accommodation that’s likely to work long-term. So you should either work on your pet’s problem areas with a trainer or with your veterinarian, or you should consider seeking an alternate arrangement where there’s less chance that your pet will be disruptive to others.”

Tony Cummings owns several rental properties in and around the Boston area and is among the contingent of property owners who is willing to make exception for responsible pet owners. “From the perspective of a property owner, I can tell you that I’ve had some very irresponsible pet owners with some really disruptive and destructive animals. Many landlords will have one bad experience and close their door to animals from that point forward. I like to think I’m a bit different. I consider each case on its own merits. If you can

demonstrate that you are a responsible pet owner – and I can usually tell by the way you interact with your pet and by the animal’s behavior – then I am willing to give you a chance,” Cummings explained.

Cummings, like many other property owners who allow pets, does require a slightly higher damages deposit for pet owners, who are also required to sign a special contract stating that they will keep their pet up-to-date on vaccinations, clean up after their pet’s bathroom activities and that they will utilize flea/tick control methods regularly. He also requires that all dogs and cats are spayed or neutered, but Cummings added, “Usually, only the very responsible pet owners get to the point of signing a contract and in my experience, the vast majority of responsible pet owners already have their pet fixed.”

“I am also more apt to rent to pet owners who have performed training classes with their pet. I feel that proper training is a big part of responsible pet ownership, and if a person already has a relationship with a trainer, I feel they’re going to be more likely to address and solve any problems early on, which is really an important part of living with a pet in a rental situation.”

Most property owners who do rent to pet owners charge a higher monthly fee, but it’s not solely for the sake of making money, as Cummings explained: “As the owner of the property, I keep insurance and the rates are higher if pets are present, so I do have to pass that on in the form of a slightly higher monthly fee… But I think many pet owners are understanding of that. Unfortunately, I think it’s just one of the many costs associated with owning a pet.

Longtime realtor Judith McCory also offered some hints on locating and securing a pet-friendly rental. “There’s two basic types of situations we see: apartment situations with a large number of units and smaller multi-family dwellings, which usually have just a few units. Many apartments will not allow pets just based on sheer numbers and the close proximity of the quarters. If you have thirty dogs on a floor, you’re going to end up with barking problems where the dogs start feeding

into each other’s barking. You’re also more apt to see situations with animals fighting on the property, and noise is also more of a consideration in an apartment building with a large number of units.” McCory added, “In most cases, you are more apt to have success finding a pet-friendly rental in one of the smaller multi-family dwellings. There’s much less potential for a problem when there’s only two or three dogs present in the building. And often, a well-behaved cat is a non-issue and landlords are happy to accommodate the renter. With a smaller dwelling, you’re also more likely to deal directly with the property owner, which is vital if negotiating is required.”

Pawtucket, RI realtor Elise Pansey, of Butterman and Kryston Century 21, was able to offer perspective from both the position of a realtor and as a landlord, since she also owns pet-friendly rental property. “When I’m working with a landlord, I do my best to convince them to rent to pet owners. In my experience, pet owners make great tenants. They tend to be more responsible and they’re always so grateful that you’re allowing their pet. These are the best type of tenants since they usually stay long term and they’re very receptive when a problem arises. If there’s a situation where a tenant isn’t picking up after their pet or something like that, I’ve found that you speak to them once and the problem is resolved,” Pansey explained.

Hiring a realtor to represent you as a buyer can also be beneficial, as a realtor is going to be familiar with the area and with the landlords and that pre-established relationship can help open doors that may otherwise be closed to a pet owner in need of a new home.

“I always ask my clients (sellers) if they would be willing to accept a well-behaved pet. And while many don’t wish to advertise it, most don’t have a problem allowing a pet on the property, providing the pet owner signs a contract, provides documentation that they’ve completed a training course and appears to be a responsible owner.

“Your realtor will also usually know about who’s open to negotiation and who is not in terms of property owners, so they can offer guidance and act on your behalf when it comes time to convince a landlord that you and your pet will make good tenants,” McCory added.

3. Take your pet along on the interview and use this as an opportunity to showcase your responsible pet ownership skills.

4. Be sure that the pet is clean and healthy in appearance when you introduce him or her to property owners, as this can help convey that you are a responsible pet owner.

5. Be honest about any medical or behavioral problems that your pet may have.

6. Provide recommendations as a testament to your pet’s good temperament and good training skills. A veterinarian, behaviorist, trainer, dog walker or doggy day care provider are good places to start.

7. If you have successfully rented with your pet in the past, consider providing your former landlord as a reference.

8. Offer to pay a separate deposit to cover the costs of pet-related damages to the property.

9. Bring along your own contract, as this suggests that you are willing to take responsibility for your pet, his behavior and any damages that your pet may cause.

A pet owner’s rental contract should include the following clauses: • I agree to spay/neuter my pet • I agree to complete obedience training classes with my pet or provide a certificate of my pet’s successful completion of a training course.

• I agree to keep my pet up-to-date on vaccinations • I agree to license by dog with the city/town on an annual basis • I agree to keep my pet on a flea and tick preventative • I agree to keep my pet well-groomed and in good health • I agree to repair any damages caused by my pet • I agree to clean-up after my pet on outdoor bathroom trips • I agree to keep my pet supervised, properly restrained and on a leash at all times when on the property.

• I agree to address any problems that may arise concerning my pet, and take necessary measures to promptly resolve the issue.

Pansey also recommends that pet owners offer to pay a pet deposit up front. She explained, “Offering to pay a pet deposit is going to show that you’re willing to take responsibility for your pet and it also tells the landlord that you’re willing to work with them.” “I think the key is to be honest and patient. Even without a pet, it can take some time to find the right home. And when you do find a pet-friendly rental that’s right for you, don’t be without a back-up plan because it’s not just about finding a petfriendly home – it’s about keeping it too,” Storey explained.

“Pets, like humans, can develop behavioral problems, even if they’ve never had them before, so be receptive to your neighbors – they’re often the first to know if your dog is developing a problem.

Acting quickly and addressing the situation immediately will make the living conditions better for everyone. And don’t be afraid to get creative – if you need to come home on your lunch break to get your dog out for more exercise, then give it a shot. Or consider enrolling your pet in a day care program that also offers behavioral training; this way, he won’t be at home barking all day and you’ll be actively working to fix the problem. The key is to be aware of your living situation and act quickly if changes need to be made.”

Chiquito loves people but lacks the patience for rough handling from small children.

Warm-hearted Mary! This adult German Shepherd loves to meet new people and she’s got a very warm, open personality. If you kneel down in front of Mary, she’ll just walk into your arms for a big hug. She’s extremely affectionate. At the same time, she can be independent and doesn’t need you to pay constant attention to her. She needs some obedience training.

Quinn was turned in to a shelter when he was only 7 months old; his mouthy behavior and excitement barking were too much for his owner and the neighbors.

Kira was described as friendly, excited, wagging her tail and leaning into the evaluator for more contact. During her time in foster care, she has shown us how much she loves being with people of all ages. Kira shares her foster home with a family, including children, a male GSD and two cats.

Neka is a sweet, shy girl seeking a calm, confident and kind leader who will help build her self-confidence. At 8 months old, Neka is still recovering from a difficult start in life. Neka was born into a breeding facility where the dogs never got out of cages and never felt grass, even though they were surrounded by fields and forest.

Jude came to us when his owner died, and he was alone in the house for days before anyone found out. He was depressed from the experience and after being taken out and put into a shelter, his depression deepened. Jude is a sweet gentleman. He asks only for a gentle person to love and give him company. He likes nothing more than to go exploring or for a ride.

Sunny is Sailor’s brother, but they are nothing alike! He’s a smaller, shy fawn boy with very expressive eyes. He’s unsure of new surroundings and shy’s away from loud noises.

Dougie is a sweet boy who is a tad shy in new situations. He had fun at a “meet and greet” at PetCo, but was a little overwhelmed by all that was going on (it was his first trip there!). He’s happy and friendly at the kennel and he loves going out with the Girls! He’d do best in a quiet household, and he may be cat-friendly.

Muttley was in a home for a brief time where he truly enjoyed the good-life. He lived with a cat and a Dachund and loved it. He especially loved following his Mom around to be her special guy (he was a little overwhelmed by the toddler, so probably no children). If you’re looking for a special love-bug, Mutt’s the guy for you.

Thirty-three Bichon Frise dogs and their owners recently gathered at Bishop Feehan High School’s Beach Field to be filmed for Animal Planet’s new upcoming series, “Dogs 101”. Emily McHugh Gasbarro, who co-owns and runs Off The Leash Doggie Daycare, a doggie daycare, boarding and training center in Attleboro was approached

by Animal Planet to help them produce an episode profiling the Bichon Frise breed.

Treating An

Injured Cruciate Ligament

with Traditional Chinese Medicine

N

ikki is an 8 year old schnauzer who just recently celebrated her eight birthday. During the summer of 2005, Nikki somehow managed to injure her rear cruciate ligament and began limping. Her owner, Maria, took her to see her regular vet as well as a specialist who recommended surgery and anti-inflammatory medication, such as Metcam, asprin and Rimydal.

Nikki had an strong adverse reaction to all the medication with symptoms of diarrhea and hematemesis (vomiting blood). Nikki was then seen by a veterinarian who practices holistic medicine.

This doctor recommended putting her on a natural diet and a product known as Osteo-Biflex. Maria began feeding Nikki a diet of organic turkey, oats with fresh vegetables. She no longer ate any canned or packaged dog food or grocery store pet treats.Though eating better was good for Nikki, it did not improve her symptoms.

With Nikki’s symptoms worsening, her owner was running out of hope. Nikki’s muscles had begun to shrink, and she was no longer able to take walks around the block. She was lame and in pain, and Maria reached a point that she was seriously considering euthanization.

She contacted me in the spring of 2006, with hopes that acupuncture would help and delay that final decision.

The first acupuncture treatment with Nikki was intense! She is a feisty little dog with a big personality. She was curious and wanted to watch every move I made. She would not allow me to needle many of the points I had selected, however we did manage to get a few needles in the most important spots. Maria, still very skeptical, did not see much change in Nikki’s walking on the next day, however she did notice that she had more energy Continued on page 29

Treating dogs with acupuncture is like a dance. Unlike humans, for whom I can explain why certain points benefit the body, dogs need a bit more pampering.

Not every human acupuncture point can be needled on a dog, nor should it. Needling a point that may cause pain is never forgotten by a dog and they usually will not allow you near that spot ever again.

Gaining the dog’s trust is very important.

I also incorporate the Bach Flower Rescue Remedy in all my treatments to help my patients relax.

Since Nikki was still a bit leery of acupuncture, I also incorporated magnet therapy and laser acupuncture during her follow-up acupuncture treatments. By using these therapies I could stimulate points that she would not allow me to needle. A Chinese liniment was also used externally over the site of the torn cruciate ligament with massage to help ease the pain and promote blood circulation.

After the fourth acupuncture treatment

Nikki was sleeping much more soundly, her walking had improved and she seemed less stressed. By the eight treatment Nikki had improved and she was able to take short walks with Maria.A year later Nikki’s muscles have filled out again, she is walking and playing and doing well.

I continue to treat Nikki on an on-call basis. Every so often she gets into a bit of trouble jumping on furniture and needs a tune-up. I believe that acupuncture was only part of the solution for Nikki.The fact she is fed a home cooked meal every day maintains her health and speeds healing, and she has the unconditional love of her owner, Maria.

n a recent summer Sunday, a slew of dogs, owners and dogs currently housed at RI & MA shelters took part in a unique graduation ceremony. These lucky dogs graduated from co-owners of Dynamic Dog training, Sue & Harry Parkers award winning training program, “Out of the Pitz and into the Ritz Pit Bull Training Academy” - recently awarded a $5000 grant thru PetFinder.com and Maddies Fund.

This one of a kind program implements a training program specifically for pit bulls and other homeless bully breeds in animal shelters. The program has been training people and dogs for the past 3 years at various regional shelters with great success and has recently gotten interests from Animal Planet to take things to a national level.

Through this program and under close direction, shelter volunteers are taught how to properly train the dogs.

Once the basic requirements are met, the dogs are tested with their volunteer handlers and if they pass, the dogs obtain their AKC Canine Good Citizen Certificate. To date, the obedience training and socialization the dogs receive in the program has increases their adoption rate to 100 percent!
