oday was one of those beautiful fall days that makes me happy to live in New England. Fall has always been my favorite time of year, and this year’s weather is proving to confirm why I call it that! As a dog owner, there are so many things to love about fall, and it’s not just the temperature (however, that is pretty great). This time of year is packed full of great events, Halloween costume contests, parades, 5K’s and my favorite part is the allowance of dogs on beaches in the area! I will admit that I have never been clear on the specific laws pertaining to dogs being allowed on what beaches, and when, during the off-season months, and have taken my chances on more than one occasion. However, this year I decided to look into just exactly where and when dogs are allowed. With the help of my wonderful new intern Rachel, I was surprised to learn that not only do the laws regarding dogs off-season vary widely, but I discovered a few amazing places that allow dog visitors year round! One of my new favorite dog friendly beaches is near the Pt. Judith light house, also known as Camp Cronin. I was nervous to bring the pups before Labor Day, but friends assured me that they had witnessed frolicking pups there all summer. I decided to visit this picturesque slice of goodness near sunset with a car packed with dogs and friends, and let me just say, we were not disappointed. My other favorite location, which allows leashed dogs year round, is Gooseberry Island in Westport. I always assumed my late afternoon visits in the summer were not entirely legal, however I took my chances with my boy Harvey (R.I.P.) over the years and never had a problem. Gooseberry will always have special meaning to me now, as Harvey and I shared his last day on earth there (see photo above). I will never forget how happy it made me to see him wade in the water and roll in the sand. I hope you are able to find a special beach to share with your dog this fall, and perhaps year round, with the help of our beach article, found on page 10. Please have a wonderful and safe fall season, get outside with your pets and enjoy our fall issue!

Dog Strangled by Phone Cord Saves His Own Life by Dialing Emergency Number

Getting Licked By A Kitty Feels Like A Brush With Sandpaper. But Why? It’s because little hooked papillae, barb-like “hairs” oriented toward the back of the mouth, cover the top surface of a cat’s tongue. These stiff projections act like the bristles of a brush (or the teeth of a comb) to make grooming an especially productive affair. It’s also thought that the barbs help do the delicate work of separating flesh from bone when a cat eats his prey, though that seems more likely to be the case for big cats like lions and tigers, whose papillae are significantly more developed.

George, a 2-year-old Basset Hound from South Heindley, West Yorkshire, U.K., was strangled by a phone cord and miraculously saved his own life by calling 999, the British equivalent of 911, reports The Sun. George knocked over a heavy-duty, old-fashioned phone in owner Steve Brown’s home; he became tangled in the cord and wound up with it wrapped around his neck. Somehow, George in the midst of choking — managed to dial 999 with his paw. The emergency operator heard heavy breathing and gasping on the other end and alerted the authorities, who entered the house with the help of a neighbor, Paul Walker, who had a key. Walker saw the dog choking and ripped the cord free from the phone to save him. He told The Sun; “Incredibly you could see where his paw print was on the phone to ring 999, he literally saved his own life.” Lydia Brown, the daughter of George’s owner, expressed equal amazement at the Basset’s lifesaving feat, telling The Sun, “He’s really dopey and just likes to chew socks.”

Is It Just Me, Or Has Halloween Gone To The Dogs? By Dr. Marty Becker, courtesy of vetstreet.com

I’m not saying that it’s a bad thing, of course. But I have noticed these days I’m more likely to see a clever costume on a dog than a child when I open my email or check out Facebook. When I do see a child dressed in costume — like my own precious granddaughter, Reagan — chances are my “grandpug,” Bruce, will be in costume right beside her. As a parent, grandparent and veterinarian, I can’t help but think of all the things that can ruin those happy pictures and memories.

Keeping Your Pets Safe

Here’s my list of things to look out for, including tips on preventing problems. The Great Escape: After the Fourth of July, Halloween is the holiday more pets go missing than any other time during the year. Between the bizarre sights & smells and the constant flow of new people, even the tamest cats and dogs may take the opportunity to head for the hills. The solution: Make sure you know where your pets are, and make sure they’re secured before twilight. For dogs with yard access, make sure your fence has no loose boards and that the gate is locked. Indoors, keep cats and dogs comfortable in a closed room or crate until the last trick-or-treater has come and gone. Continued on page 24

{Recall} Boots And Barkley Bully Sticks Recalled Dog treats sold nationwide by Target under the Boots & Barkley brand are being recalled over potential salmonella contamination. Denver-based Kasel Associated Industries issued the voluntary recall of its American Beef Bully Sticks that were sold at Target stores between April and September. The FDA is warning pet owners to be on the lookout for signs of salmonella in their pets and cautions humans handling to treats to wash their hands thoroughly because salmonella can infect humans who touch the product. No illnesses have been reported in humans or pets. People who may have been infected with salmonella could experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. In rare cases, the bacteria can lead to severe symptoms like arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain and urinary tract symptoms. Pet owners should contact their veterinarian if their pet appears lethargic or has diarrhea (sometimes bloody), fever and vomiting. Consumers who have purchased the six-count 5-inch packages of Boots & Barkley American Beef Bully Sticks are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Stick your snout into our treasure chest of the best off-season beaches, discovered by The Animal Print and its furry friends.

Summer may have ended, yet Rover still pants for a chance to romp in the waves. It seems unfair that dog owners can visit the beach and work on their tans anytime but dogs suffer from a ban in most towns in RI and MA... that is, until fall arrives! Cooler weather, fewer beach bums, free parking, and off-season laws that allow dogs on beaches make autumn the ideal season to finally let your pup dig for that buried treasure. But can you figure out the rules for when your pets can

have their beach day? Never fear! You and your salty dog need not become law-breaking pirates if you read on. Policies on when dogs are allowed on beaches vary widely. Online sources can be contradictory, leaving pet-owners wanting to walk the plank. Given the confusion, The Animal Print decided to clean up the poop and get the scoop about when dogs can “legally” explore the shore as well as the unofficial guidelines at six of our favorite local paradises.

OFFICIAL RULES AND A SALTY DOGS CODE OF COURTESY

Aye! Laws prohibit dogs from RI state bathing beaches and boardwalks, as well as many town beaches, during the warmest months. The ordinances change so frequently that even some officials are unsure of the details, but we dug deep to discover up-to-date facts on bans and leash laws that are in currently in place to “assure the well-being of all beach creatures, you and pets included.” Some of our friends reveal their own codes of courtesy. Local dogs that visit Jamestown town beaches like Mackerel Cove, as well as Southshore and Goosewing in Little Compton, are welcome after Labor Day, despite year round bans. Town and state services end when beaches officially close, so no one prowls for lawbreakers. Even some town employees say they bring their pooches in the fall and winter and hope to change official ordinances. We found that dog owners have few problems when they keep to the salty dog’s code: be respectful of other visitors, wildlife, and the environment. Use your discretion when unleashing and visiting beaches “officially” closed to pets. Prevent that “Arf!” from becoming a scurvy “Arrr!” by respecting other beachgoers and picking up that poop! Our list, though not exhaustive, includes info on our favorite RI beaches, your treasure map, so you and your pets can be salty dogs all winter. Now fetch that beach!

Narragansett Town Beach

Narragansett, RI

One of the most beautiful RI beaches, the sands of Narragansett Town Beach sprawl for hundreds of feet from the parking lot to the ocean and stretch down the coast. The town owns part of the beach and nearby Narrow River, so officially dogs are allowed only between Labor Day and Memorial Day. However, a little dog told us the beach is not officially part of the town beach past the line of cabanas, so many owners let their dogs run unleashed throughout the year. Stealthy locals also bring their canine companions at night, even during the summer. Our Facebook friend, Anne Metzger notes that both unneutered dogs and Animal Control visit Narragansett Beach on occasion, but Rusty enjoys a fall romp on Narragansett Beach. she has never run into trouble. Anne tells us, “I just go in September and October and sit on the wide-open space for running and swimming. the beach and read while my dog hangs out and swims with me.”

Gooseberry Island Preserve Westport, MA

We were thrilled to learn that leashed dog are welcome at this beautiful spot year round! The island is located in Westport, MA just past Horseneck Beach State Reservation. Follow Route 88 all the way to the end (it is also called Old John Reed Road), then take a right onto E Beach Road. Go Straight on E Beach Road and it will bring you right to the beginning of the causeway for Gooseberry Island. We found many happy pooches romping off-leash both during and after hours, so be careful if your dog is not well acclimated to other dogs. The views at Gooseberry are amazing and many freuqent visitors tell us their dogs love to run loose along the beach and play in the water. If you decide to bring your dog in the evening, I would recommend parking at the beginning on the mainland because the gate that leads down the causeway closes at 8:00 p.m. Cars cannot get by when the gate is closed but people and dogs are able to walk in. Othewise, there is limited parking at the end of the causeway. So take some time out of your busy schedule and make the journey over to Westport, MA this fall. You and your dog will love it! Point Judith State Park

New Shoreham

We recently stumbled upon this dog mecca while visiting the Point Judith lighthouse. Formerly Camp Cronin, a military camp, Point Judith State Park includes a secluded beach on the east arm of the Harbor of Refuge breakwater. The land is owned by the RI Department of Environmental Management and so follows the same rules as all RI state beaches, permitting leashed dogs from Sept. 1 through April 1; however, locals bring their dogs year round. Not only is Camp Cronin a well visited “unofficial” dog beach, Camp Cronin is a popular birding and fishing destination at the southern tip of Narragansett near Point Judith with spectacular sunsets.

Dogs sail the ferry freeof-charge, so a fall trip to Block Island lets your dog feel the sea air in his ears and sniff the breeze over the open water. After an hour trip shore to shore, you and your pooch can wander the “Sam-I-Am” digs for treasure length of this dog-friendly on the Goddard Park Beach. island. Before or after Photo by Rachel P. Riendeau hitting the beach, introduce your leashed pet to some local animals, a zedonk, emus, and fainting goats, at Manisses Animal Farm. You can plunder the shops for souvenirs and surf supplies while dogs can stop for a drink and cookie at many a water bowl set along the sidewalks.

Narragansett, (AKA Camp Cronin)

We joined a merry bunch of happy pooches, both leashed and unleashed, and their relaxed owners to watch the sunset. The Animal Print editor notes, “I was amazed to find out from locals that they bring their dogs to this small beautiful beach all year round! Most dogs were either leashed or fully under control and I was told by one local beach goer than she has never had any problems with the law or unfriedly dogs!” This haven in Point Judith State Park may be the best-kept secret of the Ocean State’s dog-friendly beaches as most websites which detail RI beaches overlook this spot completely. But, follow the salty code: keep pets on their best behavior when you visit so dogs can continue to share in this bounty of beach bliss.

Block Island, RI

Remarkably, Block Island beaches are open to dogs year round. Recently, rules requiring leashes at all times were instituted but many well-behaved dogs still run free. If you and your pooch can brave the perilous 250 steps down to the shore, you can take a natural clay bath at Mohegan Bluff, though your dog may emerge matted with mud, looking like Blackbeard or Davy Jones. Vast stretches of shoreline invite games of frisbee and fetch at Charleston Beach, Fred Benson Town Beach, and Mansion Beach. Explore the grounds of the North Light Commission as the sun sets.

Goddard State Memorial Park Beach Warwick, RI

Your pet can surf the curves of the winding roads as you drive through Goddard State Memorial Park past picnic areas, a carousel, a dock, and a golf course to the beach. Rules for state beaches apply. Some allow dogs off-leash despite leash laws, though it is not advised when people are riding horses along the shore. Canines will love to explore the smells of hoof prints next to washed up horseshoe crabs and a border of woods, sea grass, and goldenrod. Our Facebook friend, Kelly Patton says, she has never had a problem here. Kelly adds that she and her mastiffs count Goddard among their favorite spots because her dogs can cool off on hot afternoons while she watches boats sail the bay. Goddard “gives us the opportunity to take in a long walk with beautiful scenery and provides lots of open space so we can say hello to other dogs, people, even horses if we so choose, or we can keep to ourselves and just have a quiet walk,” enthuses Kelly. In addition to the beach, the park offers 14 miles of horse trails to navigate. It should be noted that horses do not require pooper scooping, so the trail can be lumpy. Also, several of our Facebook friends, including Jenn and Cristina, recommend a private beach just three miles down Ives Road from the Goddard Park main entrance. Known as Sandy Point, this beach allows leashed dogs and offers a more intimate shoreline. Continued on page 16.

Another open stretch of beach for long, leisurely walks is one of Quonset’s four beaches, Rome Point. Trek down a woodsy hill to the bay-side beach shore anytime between Oct. 1 and Memorial Day. Be sure to frequently check for ticks because you must venture through the underbrush to reach the beach. Admire the Jamestown Bridge on the right and Fox Island to the left while Fido chases leaves blown in from the forest. Our Facebook friend, Judy Salvatore, advises that you should also bring binoculars, as the true salty dogs, seals, sun themselves on the rocks in the bay between Rome Point and Fox Island in the winter. Judy notes that Rome Point gets busy because of seal-watchers, so it is best to walk your pup at high tide. Judy describes her favorite walks in the area, including “a path through the woods past old foundations and old rusty cars” and “a stone jetty-like wall, past a salt marsh toward the bridge and Plum Point Lighthouse.” Doggie bags and trash barrels are located nearby at Watch Hill to help you keep the beach clean for other pets and their humans. Judy adds that “RI has the best beaches and salty air. Soft sand and long walks make a very tired dog!” Indeed, these adventures to beaches in the cooler off-season allow for longer walks, exercise, relaxing, serene places to breathe in the change of seasons and relax with your dog, even if summer vacation is over.

Come Here Fido! Teaching Your Pooch To Come When Called

ou’re late for work and the dog is staring at you from the backyard while you call and call. You take a step and it begins – the come-catch-me game. On the other extreme, you’re walking down the street when your dog sees a squirrel, lurches forward, yanks the leash out of your hand, and books it down the road, straight into traffic. One scenario is really annoying; the other is outright dangerous. But both can be resolved! With a little bit of time, patience, and training you, too, can have a dog who comes when called!

Humans often unintentionally teach their dogs that “Come here” means run away! We do this in several ways. One is by calling a misbehaving dog to us and punishing them when they arrive. For example, you call and call your dog and when they finally arrive, yell at them for not coming faster. Or we call the dog to us only to do something unenjoyable, like trim their nails or give them a bath. The most common example? We call dogs to us because it’s time to stop playing. “Come here Fido – it’s time to stop playing with your best friend because you have to go into the house and sit by yourself.” Would you come to you?

Some useful tips to keep in mind: • Spay or neuter your dog to remove any hormonal drive to run away. • No matter how long it takes to get there, never reprimand your dog when he comes to you. • Keep your dog contained or leashed until he’s trained so he doesn’t have a chance to practice the “catch-me-if-you-can” game • Make coming-when-called a game that starts playtime! Set your dog up in an enclosed area or in the house. Whenever your dog comes to you, praise and pet him, and start playing his favorite game.

Start training! 1. Begin in one room inside the house. Call your dog to you and tell him what a good boy he is while you give him yummy snacks. Keep doing this until he comes the first time, every time.

2. Repeat step one, but work in a larger area, or from the next room. Keep doing this until he comes the first time, every time.

3. Keep going, but in an even bigger space, from several rooms away. Continue this until he comes the first time, every time.

4. Next, take the game outside to an area your dog has visited several times – preferably your yard if you have one. Work in an enclosed area or put the dog on a long leash. Let fido walk around and sniff, then try calling him to you. When he arrives, praise him like crazy and give him special treats. Keep doing this until he comes the first time, every time.

5. Gradually work in larger spaces, or make the leash longer and longer. Continue this until he comes the first time, every time.

6. Now, repeat steps 4 & 5, but try it in an area where your dog has only been a few times. Continue this until he comes the first time, every time.

7. Finally, repeat steps 4 & 5, but work in an area where your dog has never been. Keep doing this until he comes the first time, every time. When working on getting your dog to come when called, be sure to go slow, make it fun, and always reward your dog when he comes to you – no matter how long it takes. If you have any trouble, try contacting a professional trainer to assist you.

What’s New with RI Pet Laws? The General Assembly in Rhode Island voted in June to impose the state’s 7 percent sales tax on pet grooming, boarding and other services to raise $1.3 million a year. The new tax recently took effect on October 1st and does not apply to veterinary services. Pet groomers and trainers say the tax will hurt business and could cause some dog and cat owners to stop using their services. Several groomers called on the state to delay the implementation of the tax, but state revenue officials told them that there was little they could

Rene Menard, a Lincoln Democrat who voted against the new taxes, said he wants to repeal them as soon as possible. He said new taxes on pet services, taxi fares and pricey clothing will raise only about $12 million — a fraction of the state’s $8.1 billion budget — and not enough to justify the burden on business owners. “It’s idiotic,” he said. “With the economy the way it is this is the last thing we should be doing.”

Halloween Gone To the Dogs

Candy Envy: An excited dog may see you passing out “treats” and think he should get one, too — even if that means taking the treat out of a mini-Superman’s hand or sticking his muzzle in a trick-or-treater’s bag. Securing your pet away from the fun will keep the begging (and stealing) at bay. Afterward, make sure all candy is out of reach — no bags left around for scavenging. And be aware that the two biggest problems with Halloween treats are chocolate and the artificial sweetener Xylitol. Many of you know that though chocolate for most dogs usually means just a bellyache, it can be deadly. What you may not know about is the life-threatening dangers of candy and gum sweetened with Xylitol. Check not only candy bags but also purses and backpacks to make sure there aren’t hidden dangers that a creative pet can get into.

Door Duty: Dogs are territorial and curious by nature, and with so much action at the front door, your dog may be inclined to protect you from strangely dressed invaders. While teaching dogs to not bark at, rush or run out the door is the best longterm solution, your best short-term solution is keeping your hand on your dog’s collar (good), using a leash (better) or crating your pet away from the door (best). And don’t underestimate what a frightened cat can do: Keep your cat in another room to prevent his running away. Stranger Danger: Even though dogs have a much keener sense of smell than we do, that doesn’t mean they’re not going to try to protect you from the neighborhood children when they are dressed like Harry Potter, Jack Sparrow or a Smurf. In addition to

keeping your dog away from the door, you might want to skip the evening walk on Halloween. If you do go out, make sure your dog is on-leash, so even if he does get alarmed, you can better control him. And one more thing: Dressing up your dog is great fun, and most dogs are happy to be in on the joke. If yours isn’t, don’t push. However, if your dog falls into the former camp, make sure his costume fits well but is also something he can move easily in. And don’t forget your camera for some super Howl-o-ween pictures. Blazer, 1yr, came to us as a stray. He was tied up at Lincoln Woods, would’ve been there overnight but thankfully someone from D.E.M. found him and brought him here. He is a sweet boy and very loving. He very much loves attention from us. He seems like he would be good with other dogs and small children, not sure about cats though.

Butterscotch, 10yrs, would be a perfect cat for an older person. She would be content to just lay in your lap all day and relax. She loves to just hang out in her bed and watch television. Butterscotch is a very mellow and laid back cat. She came to us a turn-in and would love to find her forever home.

Kane, 8mths, is a very sweet and charming guy. He is still kind of a puppy so he does need some exercise to wear him out. He also needs some training, so experienced owners please come this way. He has been around small children and he seems fine with the other dogs in the shelter. He loves to cuddle and hang out with people.

Lilly, 5yrs, is extremely shy. She only has four teeth which makes her very apprehensive to other animals and people. She really needs a best friend to earn her trust and spend all day with her. She came to us as a turn-in and would love to find her forever home.

Clara is a happy-go-lucky, loving 1.5 year old pup. Clara loves the company of other dogs, and is great with people of all ages. Clara is sweet and snuggly and loves to be right next to her person at all times. Clara knows, sit, paw, other paw, down, is crate trained and housebroken too.

Eshe (EH-shay) was brought in as a stray to Providence Animal Control, emaciated and in severe pain. We pulled her into our rescue five days later where she went from our partner vet, to an emergency specialty vet for inpatient care. Eshe has remained a sweet and loving girl, just desperate for kindness and human touch.

Hope is doing so much better! Her demodex mange (not contagious) looks so much better and she is well on her way to being completely healed. Hope started Pit CLASS on Saturday, a weekly obedience class with other pit bull type dogs where she is working hard on her manners and commands. She was a super star at class.

Scrappy has demodex mange, but don’t worry, it’s very treatable and he is already looking better after being in foster care for two weeks. We took Scrappy for a two week intensive care foster period so his mange could get better, and it already has. He is a sweet young adolescent boy who would do well in pretty much any home.

Cat Exercise: Keeping Your Kitty in Good Shape While most cats will never learn to run on a treadmill, (no matter how much catnip you offer,) almost all cats do benefit greatly from some form of regular physical activity. Not only does exercise burn calories, improve muscle tone, and reduce a cat’s appetite, but a healthy exercise plan will also help protect your cat from becoming overweight or obese, extending her lifespan and improving her quality of life. By sticking to a regular feline workout plan, you’ll have a major positive impact on your cat’s overall health.

Consult Your Vet

As always, it’s important to consult your vet before introducing a new exercise program. If your cat has any health issues, ask your veterinarian to recommend activities that fit your cat’s individual needs.

Get Moving

Some cats are very active by nature. Others may require special treats or cat toys to spark that playful spirit. Here are a few ideas to get your cat moving.

• Leave out paper bags, tissue paper, and cardboard boxes to inspire play. • Provide fresh catnip. • Encourage your cat to chase toys, balls, sticks with feathers, or flashlight pointers. Be careful not to shine the pointer in your pet’s eyes – or anyone else’s. • Inspire climbing with a cat tree or cat condo. • Provide a scratching post or pad. • Encourage play with other pets. Set up play-dates with a friend or relative’s pet. You may even want to consider adopting another cat. • Train your cat to perform tricks for low-calorie treats. For example, teach your cat to run to you from across the house, or climb up her cat tree when you shake a box of treats. • Get your cat a food puzzle. Specially designed cat toys require your cat to work to remove treats inside. Be sure to choose toys for your cat carefully, avoiding toys with string or small pieces that your cat may try to swallow, and don’t leave toys out for cats to play with unattended. {Wander Tails} a book review by Mike Fink

o, it’s not the Greek dramatic tragedy. It’s the account of a love affair between Gwen Cooper, a twentysomething year old would-be writer, and...a newborn, eyeless black kitten! She adopts this creature and devotes decades

of her life to sharing bed and board with the wee orphan, which, incredibly, “nurses” her earlobes and inspires his rescuer to produce his feline biography. Which makes the New York Times bestseller list! It was a former student of mine, Joan Fox LaCasse, who sent me the beautiful book as an alumna souvenir, and it has won my esteem, my admiration, and my plan to purchase enough copies to share with my RISD classes next September. It has everything: humor, pathos, philosophy, poetry, and a straightforward honesty that fixes and focusses your mind on every single one of its 300 pages. “Homer” manages to find joy and adventure every day, as the two of them--along with two other cat pets, also rescued-move from Florida to New York in search of work and living spaces. I guess this is autobiography as well as biography, because you get to know (and to love) the author as well as the mascot who earns the fascinated affection of everybody who meets him. The lovely Manhattan autumn turns out, tragically, to be September 11, 2001, and the description of the awful ordeal is as

compelling a chapter as anything else you may have read or seen! Gwen has to make her way back to the apartment where she has left her animal companions, to rescue them again, and the dreadful scenes are superbly rendered. There is, however, always hope and an upbeat promise that runs throughout these chapters. Gwen has roommates, boyfriends, parents, failures at her places of employment...but yes, there is also a happily-ever-after conclusion. I quote: “I am Homer’s eyes. He is my heart.” I loved this book, from start to finish. There is one chapter that makes you hold your breath, no smiles, no sighs, no tears, just focus and fixed attention. Homer, the gentle and playful little wonder-cat, has one moment of fierce attention and guardianship. A burglar, potential murderer, has broken into their apartment, and Homer saves the day! I most highly recommend “Homer’s Odyssey” as a splendid book, whether you are a cat-person, or a bird-person, or a dog-person, or a people-person. I guarantee you will not regret it!
