I

’m fairly certain I say this every year but this summer went by fast. It’s still August and at the moment it’s nearly 90 degrees outside, so my beach days aren’t over yet! While I’m sorry to see summers’ end quickly approaching, I’m looking forward to the cooler fall days ahead.

Editor: Stephanie Georgia

Assistant Editors: Harvey R.I.P. Simon the Sinister Caprica 6 Bodhi (permanent foster asst. editor)

Autumn has always been my favorite season but especially since I started sharing my life with dogs. This is the time I like to get out for hikes, visit friends or just have my tag-a-long buddies join me for a ride. This year I plan to visit some of the mascots featured in this issue on some of those rides. I had so much fun searching for not just pet-friendly businesses but local businesses that share their work day with their pets. You can read all about them on page 10. I encourage you to stop by some of these pet loving businesses, meet their mascots and tell them the Animal Print sent you! I’m excited to announce that the Animal Print is now on Instagram! I’m enjoying sharing the life of my pets as well as the animals I come across in my travels. I recently launched our first #hashtag photo contest called “Show Us Your Mutt” and many of you did just that. You can see the winning photo on page 9 and you can see the other entries by searching #animalprintmutt on Instagram. I’m planning the next photo contest as I type this and I would like to invite anyone on Instagram to join us. You can find the Animal Print on Instagram at @animalprintmag and please feel free to hashtag all your pet photos with #animalprintmag. You might even see yourself regrammed! Lastly, I would like to remind you to BARK THE VOTE (if you haven’t already) in the 10th annual Top Dog Readers’ Choice Survey. I cannot believe this is our 10th year and without fail, each year, I learn about some new secret beach, hiking trail, pet-friendly restaurant, bar...you name it! I haven’t sneaked any peeks just yet but voting closes on September 15th and I can’t wait to see all the winners. I love this survey because it’s a unique way for the magazine and its readers to give some amazing local businesses support and to also recommend deserving organizations to other pet lovers. It’s a win, win for everyone. If you haven’t voted yet, visit www.theanimalprint.com and vote for your top dog. I hope you enjoy the last few weeks of summer as well as our new fall issue!

Locally and around the globe…

Farewell Uggie: ‘The Artist’ Dog Passes Away at Age 13 From Toto and Lassie, to Benji and Rin Tin Tin, these famous movie dogs have had a special way of pulling at the heart strings of families all over the world, time and time again. But perhaps no dog has had as much of an impact on the motion picture industry as Uggie.

‘Tindog,’ the Tinder for Dog Lovers is Here

Sadly, the Jack Russell terrier who won over audiences in the 2012 Oscar-winning film The Artist, has passed away at age 13. The pup’s trainer, Omar von Muller, confirmed the Hollywood pup was put to sleep recently in Los Angeles following a long battle with prostate cancer. In addition to starring in successful films like The Artist and Water For Elephants, Uggie was the first dog to have his paw prints cast in cement at Gruaman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. He will be truly missed, but never forgotten.

If you’ve ever looked into the loving eyes of your dog-son and thought, “If only there was some sort of dating app for dogs where I could find a match for Mister Scruffballs,” well, your wish has been granted. Tindog, a new app that connects dog lovers based on location, has launched. Like Tinder, the app’s interface will suggest nearby matches, allowing users to swipe left for rejects and swipe right for the dog hotties. When both users choose each other, a match is formed and they can chat and arrange a pet play-date. “Dogs bring so much joy and love, that they really have the power to connect us. That’s why we wanted to make it easy for dog lovers to meet new people around them who feel the same way,” founder and CEO Julien Muller said in a press release. “Whether it’s building new friendships or even making a love connection, Tindog is a great way to expand your social circle with others who love man’s best friend just as much as you do.”

“Once you have had a wonderful dog, a life without one, is a life diminished.” -Dean Koontz

TF Green Airport Introduces

PVD Pups Pet Therapy For Travelers TF Green Airport is going to the dogs, quite literally! PVD Pups is the airport’s new pet therapy program. When travelers walk through the terminal they will now be greeted by some furry four-legged friends. From a husky to an English bulldog to a goldendoodle to a mixed breed (mutt!), the dogs and their handlers are all volunteers who have undergone extensive training. Dogs have good citizen certification and have been certified as a PVD Pup after completing a specialized training program specific to the airport environment. Under the direction of Susan Parker of Dynamic Dog Training, to date, 9 dogs have completed the 9 week course, learning skills from basic

obedience to desensitization to other animals and food and other stimuli in the airport environment. All handlers are also required to pass a security clearance before joining the PVD Pups team. PVD Pups lead dog is Teddy is a mixed breed dog who’s favorite game is riding the airport escalator. Susan and her husband Harry adopted Teddy from the Smithfield Animal Shelter on April 11th of this year. He was at the shelter for a year and a half...his shelter name was Taz and they re-named him Teddy. His full name is Theodore Francis Green and he was trained by Susan and Harry to become the first official “Certified” airport pet therapy dog in RI. Also joining the program is Atticus, an Old English bulldog adopted

from Providence Animal Control, and Sadie, a pit bull who was adopted from Cranston Animal Shelter. Travelers may see pups outfitted in green vests with the words PET ME walking through the terminal on any given day, with a focus on peak travel times. For more information on PVD Pups, visit dynamicdogstraining.webs.com or follow their Facebook page under Dynamic Dog Training Service. Similar programs are in place at more than 27 airports nationwide.

In Good Company Meet Your Local Business Mascots! Written by Abigail Phillips

Jennifer Ricci and Cheech of Rocket To Mars. Photo by Jim Phillips

When the work week gets tough, who better to have by your side than your trusty pet companion? Well, a new study examines the benefits of pets in the work place. The study featured in the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology found that participants perceived pets in the workplace to reduce stress and to positively affect employee health and the organization (Perrine & Wells 2001). As for productivity, a study carried out at Central Michigan University found that people performing a group task with a dog present experienced significantly higher mutual trust, team bonding

Cheech, Rocket to Mars

Meet Cheech of Rocket to Mars! The West Side of Providence’s favorite Russian Blue kitty in the window. When store owner Jennifer Ricci first met Cheech wandering around a friends yard in The Armory, she was missing an eye and was unneutered. Knowing she would be in for a rough life, Jennifer took Cheech in and they have been friends and co-workers for five years now. Rocket to Mars is a 13 year-old vintage and antique store, selling furniture, clothing and accessories, housewares, knick knacks, lighting and just about all the memorable 20’s and early 80’s paraphernalia you can think of. While visiting the store you can certainly expect to meet Cheech. She demands attention, whether she’s luring you into the store with scratches and meows at the front

and intimacy than those that worked without one (The Economist 2010). Needless to say, pets at the workplace have significant positive impacts on the work environment, which can translate to the overall success of a business. To further investigate the positive powers of pets on the job, we reached out to some local business mascots that are bringing love and positivity to work with them everyday. Whether they are posing for social media pictures, greeting customers, or napping on the job, these business beasties have a whole lot to offer.

window, or purring and prodding her way through the middle of business transactions. If there is one thing Cheech is best at, it’s being the boss while laying around and supervising Jennifer at work. Cheech’s favorite part of the days are spent catching some sun at the front window, while she watches the birds and munches on some Friskies Party Mix “Beach Side Crunch” treats. Jennifer says the best thing about working with Cheech is her company. Cheech always follows her around the shop with lots to talk about! Stella, Flaunt Boutique

Meet Stella, model of Flaunt Boutique’s newest trendy jewelry, and official shop entertainer. Stella is a seven yearold female Boxer and has been part of the Flaunt family since the boutique opened in 2008. Flaunt Boutique offers jewelry and accessories for both men and women, featuring local brands, charity based lines and the most current, trendy styles. When she’s not lounging on her mini couch, Stella loves the opportunity to model all of the boutique’s newest jewelry and truly flaunt her puppy poses for social media pictures. Stella also helps raise awareness for her shelter friends. Flaunt Boutique does a lot of work with Providence Animal Rescue League, and having her in the store helps remind people to give to the less fortunate ones. To further add to her resume, Stella is a great entertainer, bonding with customers and their children to create a fun and relaxed environment while looking for some trendy bling. Flaunt Boutique owner, Amanda Doumato, says the best thing about working with Stella is getting to spend every day with her best friend.

Chloe and Charlie, Nikki’s Liquors

When you’re heading out for your next “packy” run, you may want to consider Nikki’s Liquors. If their selection of craft beers, artisanal spirits and fine wines don’t have you hooked, then Chloe and Charlie will! These two Yorkshire Terriers know how to entertain. Chloe melts hearts with her adorable face and Charlie’s playful personality and silly shenanigans are sure to make you laugh. Nikki’s liquors is a pet friendly, family-run liquor store that has been in business for 15 years. They carry a wide selection of unique items not normally found in neighborhood liquor stores. Summit and Tupelo, Tilted Barn Brewery

While enjoying a fresh, hand-crafted ale at Tilted Barn Brewery it would be tough to miss Summit and Tupelo. The family behind the farm decided to get puppies just before starting a family of their own. Now the brother and sister pup pair have been with the family for five years and they are a valued part of their business. Tilted Barn Brewery opened in 2014 and has since been offering an exciting “farm to pint” experience, using ingredients grown on the farm to brew a unique beer selection available for tasting on Saturdays 1-4 pm in the historic barn located on their farm in Exeter. On Saturdays, you can find Summit and Tupelo greeting guests, hanging out in the barn, playing in the grass, or lapping the beer off the floor ensuring none is wasted! Owners Matt and Kara Richardson said having their great personalities at work is a huge part of the brewery experience and everyone loves them. come to greet them, especially when they get belly rubs! Matt describes one of the best things about working with the duo is watching them spend Saturday afternoons with smiles on their faces, truly happy to have everyone visiting “their” farm.

Bella Bean Cleveland has a very special place at Cluck! urban farm and garden supply. She makes people feel comfortable and at home, which is what owner Drake emphasizes as central to her business. Cluck! after an epic legislative battle, has been open for three years now and continues to support those who are interested in gardening, bees, chickens, and seek to live sustainably and self-reliantly. That being said, having Bella’s humor and gentleness in the store brings together a relaxed, community oriented environment where people can ask questions and share knowledge freely. When Drake first met Bella Bean Cleveland at the kennel, the American Staff-Whippet cross, she was disinterested in attention. Bella only truly connected with Drake when they had a moment alone and Bella, then Angel Eyes, dropped a toy at Drake’s feet, staring her in the eyes to let her know she was committed to their relationship. This interaction spoke to Drake and the two sparked a strong relationship that translates into their everyday experiences, both on and off the clock. Some daily work duties on Bella’s schedule include greeting customers at the door, lap time with Drake at 3pm, snacking on some homemade chicken jerky strips, Contiued on page 14.

Aspects, Inc.’s milk bone lovin’ mascot has a lot to offer on the job. Juno is of the pit bull breed and is about 10 years old. She is a wonderful ambassador for the breed that tends to get a bad wrap, always greeting customers with a tail wag and a happy face. Juno went from a stressful shelter environment to uplifting spirits in the workplace, bringing calm and happiness to even the most hectic and stressful days. Aspects, Inc. is a manufacturing company that produces highend wild bird feeders and other outdoor products. You can find Juno pictured in their catalog every year. Her image advocates for other animals in need, and a portion of the company’s proceeds go to help those birds and animals we share the planet with. When she isn’t visiting with customers, or performing her other very important daily dog duties, you can find Juno in owner Trisha Torres’ office. It is here that Juno spends her time lounging on her couch-sized “throne”, occasionally wandering over to rest her head on Trisha’s lap, just to say hello. What could be better than that? Wrangel, Aids to Navigation Team, Bristol Coast Guard

Wrangel is just another hard working member of the Coast Guard’s Aids to Navigation Team. The two-year old part retriever has established himself as their security dog in the winter, patrolling the base to intercept any visitors. When the weather gets warmer, Wrangel will head out on the seas to aid the crew in maintaining buoys, but don’t expect to catch him in the water! This is a fear Wrangel is still working to overcome. On his time off, Wrangel likes to sleep in a bed in Executive Petty Officer Joe Greeley’s office, or enjoy the weekends exploring the trails and cliffs of Beavertail. The Aids to Navigation Team contributes to the overall mission of the Coast Guard, keeping the waters safrangel was a great addition to the team having been rescued himself. In 2013, Wrangel found himself in a crowded shelter in South Carolina, where euthanasia was a possible fate. Fortunately, the Potter League for Animals’ Fetching Friends Transport Program rescued Wrangel and brought him to their Middletown shelter where the Aids to Navigation Team found their new mascot.

Trouble in The Cotton State

I

n July, I had the privilege of assisting the ASPCA with an animal cruelty case in Alabama. For me the experience was incredible but, more importantly, I felt that several valuable lessons could be learned from a really bad situation. I wanted to share this story with you. In the end of June, the ASPCA was contacted by Lawrence County, Alabama authorities who had received tips from volunteers at the local animal control facility. When they arrived, what the ASPCA found (and seized) were more than 300 animals in horrendous conditions. Several were severely emaciated, frequently not being fed for days. Many were seriously injured from fighting for scraps of food. Others could barely stand, and too many had already succumbed to starvation or untreated illness. Mosquito larva infested water bowls. Fleas, ticks, and worms infested the animals. They were overcrowded in filthy conditions, lost, and confused. How did this happen? Bobbi Taylor was contracted to provide animal control for the county, which is approximately double the square mileage of Boston and approximately the same population as Cumberland. The county, believing the job was being taken care of, didn’t realize what was going on behind

closed doors. I say “closed doors” because the woman would turn away owners looking for their lost pets, saying the pets were not there. Unfortunately, this was not always the case as several of the animals were there. Why did she lie? Why did she hide them? We may never know. Sadly, the realization came too late for too many. Some pets didn’t make it out alive. Others were transported to rescues in the north.

every single animal, trained staff provided daily care in heat surpassing 100 degrees, and attempts were made to reunite lost pets with their families. Sadly, none were microchipped so reunifications were few and far between. The most notable reunions were the half blind lab that had been missing for a year, and the lost puppy that had since become an adult. A handful found their homes. The rest did not.

Lesson 1 Research southern transports and ensure the rescue you are working with is legitimate. To make matters worse, any volunteers who questioned the woman were barred from coming back. As a result, most shut their mouths for fear that no one would care for the animals in such desperate need. Finally, after a few years, someone spoke up and help arrived.

Lesson 3 Microchip your pets and keep it updated. The healthy pets that were not claimed were soon ready for adoption. This is where I came in. I was asked to be part of a team of six animal behaviorists who evaluated nearly 200 dogs and a dozen cats in five days. We were stunned by how little aggression we saw, considering the circumstances. Barely any at all and nothing noteworthy. What we did see, however, was a great deal of fear. Many of the animals were so terrified, they simply “shut down” – urinating and defecating on themselves during the evaluations. Based on condition, age, and behavior we can guess that several of the dogs were born on the property and exposed to very little human kindness. Many never set foot inside a home, and will have a long

Lesson 2 Don’t just say “someone should do something.” BE someone. DO something. The lucky pets were relocated by the ASPCA to a temporary, emergency shelter – photographing and gathering forensic data on each animal for the impending criminal case. Veterinarians examined and vaccinated

road ahead. As heartbreaking as it was to evaluate these terrified dogs, we needed to assess which were ready for adoption, which were candidates for rehabilitation, and which were candidates for rescue and foster homes. Perhaps the most surprising thing was how many were wonderful, happy, obviously trained, obviously owned pets. Many knew commands and were housetrained and not at all afraid. We met some absolutely wonderful dogs. Lesson 4 Dogs are very adaptable and very forgiving. But some damage is incredibly hard to repair. After advertising in the community and then providing time for locals to claim their pets, the ASPCA arranged an event for locals to adopt the unclaimed pets. During the event, 125 dogs and cats were placed. The rest were transferred to partner organizations equipped to handle their various needs. So what happened to Bobbie Taylor? She currently awaits trial for 17 counts of animal cruelty. Lesson 5 Support the ASPCA Field Investigations and Response Team. They are good a organization, an incredible group of people, and they do great work.

ADOPT ME!

Potter League for Animals • www.potterleague.org

Hi, my name is Aniyah. I am a quiet girl who likes to do my own thing. I can be affectionate, but if you are looking for a kitty that is just another member of the household and someone to come home to, that’s me. I would do well in a home with teens and up and poissbly another cat or a laid back dog.

Brody is a lover! Rated best snuggler and kisser in the shelter by shelter staff and volunteers. He is fully equipped with his commands but needs some reminders about his manners from time to time. He loves to play with other dogs but would prefer to be the only dog in your household. Come in and see why we are all in love.

Meet Lilly, She is a small, young Norfolk Terrier Mix who is looking for her forever home. If you love cute little terriers, this is the girl for you!

Meet Sophia a small young female Boston Terrior and Jack Russel Terrier (Parson Russel Terrier) mix who is looking for her forever home. If you love a cute little mix, you will love Sophia!

Providence Animal Rescue League • www.parl.org

Hi! My name is Phoebe and I am a 10 year old female. I love attention, but I’m also happy to just hang out and do my own thing. My feline-ality is “Sidekick”. Like all sidekicks, I’m just plain good company. I like attention, and I also like my solitude. I don’t go looking for trouble, but I’m no scaredy-cat, either.

Hi! My name is Jenny and I am a 2 year old female. I am a friendly and confident girl and would make a great addition to your family, but I don’t really like dogs. I’m an adventurous cat, but I’ll still make plenty of time to show you my affectionate side. Want a cat who’s brimming with confidence? That’s me.

Meet Harrison Ford! At 2 years young, this big guy could use some basic training and help with self control. Ford loves meeting new people, but would do better in an adults only home due to his size/excitement level. A home that can work on socializing him with other animals would be great as well. If you want a pal for life, Harrison is your man!

Hi! My name is Lucy and I am a 7 year old female. I’m a curious girl that would love to have you as my companion! My feline-ality is “Executive”. I have to say, I’m a busy cat. First, I’ve got to check out what’s happening out the window. Next, I’ll see if any closets or cupboards need looking into. And then there are my naps--can’t be late for those. I

Help Save Lives... Adopt A Pet Today! Lazicki’s Bird House & Rescue, Inc. http://lazibirds.org

Spunkie is a lovable Blue and Gold Macaw. She knows how to step up and is generally very good outside the cage and not at all cage protective. She is 20 years old, but if you saw her you’d think she was just a baby. Macaws can live up to 100 years in captivity so she is by no means a senior.

Hayley is an african grey. She is only 3 years old and can live up to 40 years. She is very active and shows a lot of interest in interacting with volunteers. She prefers to come out of her cage on her own rather than stepping up right out of it. So, she will need a little training on that front. An ideal home would be an experienced home.

Bucca is an energetic Moluccan Cockatoo. He has just learned to step up to one of our volunteers but he is still very nervous outside his cage. This is why Bucca will need a home with large birds experience to help him slowly build confidence outside his cage. Also, Bucca, like most cockatoos can be very loud at times.

Snowball is a goffin’s cockatoo. She loves to snuggle with the volunteers and find new ways to sneak out of her cage. She needs a home where he can get lots of out of cage time and one on one time with her human. Cockatoos in general can be very difficult pets to have because of their loud noise level and tendency to get moody with little warning.

REBA is a new cat to the shelter. She is all white except for a charcoal bit on her little face. She is a friendly girl who is a sweetheart. REBA is a serene cat and loves to be petted. Meet her at the shelter and she will win your heart.

BRODY is a young sweet boy about a year old. We believe he is a Husky, Shepherd and possibly Lab mix. He is a very handsome pup with lots of personality. BRODY is a dog who loves to run. We think he will need a fenced in yard or lots of property to run. If you are a runner this is your partner. Volunteers and Staff alike love this special boy.

SMOKEY is a sweet kitten. He is a gray and white guy who looks very comfortable in his blue bed. He is ready for adoption and a loving home. SMOKEY has a sister named SOOTY who is in one of these pictures. She is a cute torti.

Tiny perfect Diamond is a 1yr old female itty bitty Pittie! She’s a little lady with lots of love to give to her new family. She is a love bug! She is currently a participant in Handsome Dan’s Rescue Shelter Dog Enrichment Program where she attends weekly training classes at Outbound Hounds to work on being the perfect little lady for your home.

Hercules is gonna knock your socks off! He may be a big lug, but this gentle soul just CRAVES human interaction and attention. Herc is a silly goofball who loves to play fetch with balls, stuffed ducks, rope, anything you throw. This handsome man LOVES people, loves to please, and is just so HAPPY GO LUCKY.

Exeter Animal Shelter

LILLY is a new addition to the Exeter Animal Shelter. She is about five years old and is a lop rabbit. Her cage comes with the adoption. LILLY is a sweet and friendly girl. She is enjoying her special treat of greens in one of the pictures.

My name is Sarge, I’m a shepherd mix and about 4 years old. I was transferred to the RISPCA from another animal shelter after being found as a stray. I would enjoy an active family who would take me on walks. I do like kids, although it would be best if I were with children ages 12+ since I can be a bit high energy and get excited.

Meet Lucy a 9 year old Sharpei/Mastiff mix who is looking to live her Golden Years with someone who will love her. Since she’s a bit on in years, she is a Marvin’s Friend which means her adoption fee is waived! She’s a lovely girl who got a FANTASTIC evaluation from us. She is gentle and very sweet.
