or as long as I can remember, fall has been my favorite time of year. Not just because of the drop in temperature (however, the weather this summer has been amazing) but because of the more intangible things such as the inevitable change, anticipation of the holidays and what new dog events I might discover. Since I’m always on the lookout for new and unsual events, this time I decided to hunt a few down myself and share them with you and your pup. In this issue you’ll find a special feature, highlighting 10 adventures in Rhode Island that you may not have known you could do with your dog. For example, did you know that you can partake in a wine tasting and then relax the day away listing to jazz with your pup in tow? Well, you can at Greenvale Vineyards! When I called the vineyard to ask if they were pet-friendly, the woman who answered the phone exclaimed excitedly “oh, we LOVE visiting dogs!” Another favorite is a night at the drive-in - The Rustic Drive-In has been around for years but who knew it was also dog friendly? With a special section set aside for walking your pooch if the need arises during a movie; I can’t think of a better way to spend some quality snuggle time with your love. Just to warn you, some of these adventures are pretty romantic...but I know how much you love your dog! Speaking of romantic, I am thrilled to invite you to a speed dating event that I’m hosting, exclusively for dog owners and those that love them at India Restaurant on October 2nd. There has been a great deal of interest in this event by both men and women but for some reason, the men have been slow to commit (sound familiar?) At the moment there are just a few spaces left for women, so we are on the look-out for the single men to sign up asap! The evening also includes complimentary hors d’oeuvre and a cocktail. Diamonds Are A Dog’s Best Friend, Too.

Veterinarians Use Nanoparticles To Deliver Cancer Treatment In Dogs & Cats Veterinarians are testing the use of gold nanoparticles and a targeted laser treatment for solid tumors in dogs and cats. The nanoparticles circulate in the bloodstream and become temporarily captured within the incomplete blood vessel walls common in solid tumors. Then, a non-ablative laser is employed against the tumor. Although medical researchers have tested gold nanoparticles with targeted laser treatments on human patients with some success, the treatment is still new to both human and veterinary medicine. The Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine is one of four current veterinary schools around the country testing the AuroLase therapy developed by Nanospectra Biosciences Inc., a startup company based in Houston, Texas. The others are Texas A&M University, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the University of Georgia. “The treatment involves two phases,” Dr. Nick Dervisis, assistant professor of oncology in the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences said. “First, we infuse the patient with the gold nanoparticles. Although the nanoparticles distribute throughout the body, they tend to concentrate around blood vessels associated with tumors. Within 36 hours, they have cleared the bloodstream except for tumors. The gold nanoparticles are small enough to circulate freely in the bloodstream and become temporarily captured within the incomplete blood vessel walls common in solid tumors. Then, we use a non-ablative laser on the patient.”

It took six years, but Lois Matykowski’s missing diamond wedding ring finally reappeared when her 10 year old Rottweiler mix, Tucker, swallowed a popsicle stick, according to ABC News. The Wisconsin pooch – known affectionately to his family as the “food burglar” – wolfed down a popsicle and its stick, which prompted Matykowski to call her veterinarian. The vet suggested feeding the dog bread with Vaseline to help bring up the stick. Eventually, the stick came back up, and it worked so well that, two days later, Tucker coughed up something much more sentimental: Matykowski’s wedding ring, which had disappeared six years ago. The ring went missing around the couple’s 20th wedding anniversary after they upgraded the ring (but, sadly, didn’t insure it). When Matykowski spotted the sparkler in Tucker’s vomit, “I screamed,” she said, adding that she cleaned it by scrubbing it with toothpaste. While the discovery has made her happy, it has made others jealous. “My friends have been telling me, I want a dog that throws up diamonds, she said. Who wouldn’t, right?”

Dear Animal Print, Just picked up the newest issue and it looks great! It is always exciting to see a fresh stack of your magazines because I know how much I will enjoy perusing its pages. I wanted to say, though, that in two places in this issue Aiden’s (Bristol, RI) is listed as being a dog friendly bar but we had a contrary experience earlier this summer. We were told when we tried to go there that (our dog) Max was not allowed on their outdoor patio and would have to be tied up on the sidewalk off of their property. Not only would he have made a scene showing his displeasure at being so far away from us but he would also have been in the hot evening sun so there was no way we could stay. We ended up eating instead at one of the two sidewalk tables at The Square Peg in Warren, where Max was welcomed by our waiter and also had many visitors come out to greet him from inside. I’m actually glad we had an excuse to check it out because it was great. Maybe this experience at Aiden’s was a fluke, but we definitely learned from it that in the future we should call ahead! We are looking forward to trying some of the other places listed in your magazine. Cheers, Katy

umford Pet Center is a fourth-generation, family-owned business with four locations in the greater Providence area. They started out as a pet store, selling fish, cats, dogs, and supplies– however to stay successful for 70 years - they’ve continued to adapt to meet the dynamic needs of their customers. In 1936, Herbert “Salty” Baker started the business by selling pets from the basement of his home in Rumford, Rhode Island. Over the past several years, Rumford Pet Center has moved from selling pets to a more “holistic” approach. To complete the new approach, Rumford Pet

Center located and sourced higher-quality food and supplies which provide a full-circle pathway to access the needs of our communities’ most beloved creatures. I spoke with Noel Gonsalves, marketing director for Rumford Pet Center about the ways they continue to transform to meet the needs of the community. Noel explained the decision to move away from selling animals to proactive work with existing rescue animals. “We stopped selling dogs in January 2013, about a year and a half before any ordinance required it. We wanted to focus more on providing quality supplies and helping out with the adoptions in the community. We changed our business plan to focus on giving existing animals quality lives.” Noel continued, “We consider ourselves to be a bit like the Whole Foods of pet stores.” As a person who shops at Whole Foods, my initial reaction was to ask about how they are able to keep their competitive edge and related costs, Noel clarified, “Like any better-quality product, there will be price-point extremes, but the median point is definitely reasonable. The simple fact is this: we don’t sell items one can find in a typical grocery or drugstore; we sell food that is specifically aligned to particular dietary needs either by pet or owner. The holistic approach to pet ownership is more encompassing than just food. Rumford Pets extends their outreach to the community in many other ways. By actively working with Providence Animal Rescue League (PARL) and the East Providence chapter of Volunteer Services for Animals (VSA), they have found ways to find homes for animals in need while providing products and services for new and old pet owners. They sponsor and encourage outreach programs through PARL (PARL pet walk, Sept 20th), but also through non-pet organizations, for example the Ovarian Cancer Awareness walk/run (Sept 28th) both at Roger Williams Park in Providence, RI. In their East Providence location, Rumford Pet Center now has a self-serve dog wash equipped with ramps, tubs, showers, shampoos, conditioners and towels, all included in a $15-$20/hr range. Further in their East Providence location, Rumford Pet Center has teamed up with Pooch Pawsitive, led by Heidi McNeil, a professional dog trainer. Heidi does on-site puppy play groups, training classes, puppy day care, house training and obedience workshops. Rumford Pet Center certainly started out with humble beginnings. Over the course of nearly 80 years, they have built four separate locations to service the greater Providence metro: Rumford, Warwick, Smithfield and Attleboro, MA. With only a few years to their centennial celebration, we look forward to see their continuing improvements to better service our furry friends and their humans. From an early start as a dog walker, Nancy Wells would take hundreds of photos, inspiring her to use her art skills by drawing portraits of pups she took outside. The community of other animal artists grew around her and, through the advantages of social media, her portraits were seen online. Soon enough, she was being commissioned for pet portraits. Keeping life focused around her love for animals, Nancy volunteered with event coordination at Providence Animal Rescue League (PARL). It was there she learned the techniques needed to run a successful fundraiser, and where she realized she had all the pieces to run a successful curated art show as a means of raising money for PARL. “I saw an opportunity to organize an event on my own that would engage the local artist community while also supporting the shelter. I was really happy to find that PARL was so supportive of my mission.” With support and confidence fueling her, Nancy moved forward with curating and hosting more art shows. She’s been fortunate enough to

She happily states, “I really enjoy seeing the excitement that the project brings out in other people. Whenever I’ve told a new person about the show, there has been an instant positive reaction, followed by an offer to help out in some way. People are sincerely willing to help because they believe in the cause.” After attracting so much interest in Providence, Nancy decided to take her project on the road, helping other shelters around the country. She hopes to publish a book containing the photos she collects of the artwork from around the country. Aside from that, her greatest hope is that “this project inspires other people to get involved in similar ways for their own local shelters. I want people to realize that their skills are valuable, and can be used toward doing something good.” Though she doesn’t have any more local shows scheduled, you may be able to catch an upcoming show when she finds a place to settle for a few months. Governor Signs Puppy Doe Bill, Increases Animal Cruelty Penalties

Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick has signed a bill inspired by Puppy Doe that will increase the penalties for offenders convicted of animal cruelty. “It is my hope that the passage of this bill will send a clear message that animal abuse will not be tolerated and that violators will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” state Rep. Bruce Ayers, D-Quincy, one of the original supporters of the bill, said. The new law will raise the maximum prison sentence for an animal cruelty charge from five to seven years in prison and the maximum fine from $2,500 to $5,000. The bill, approved by legislators last week, raises the maximum prison sentence to 10 years for repeat offenders. The bill requires veterinarians to report any suspicions of abuse they see during their observations of animals. Vets who don’t would be reported to the state Board of Registration in Veterinary Medicine. The bill also creates a task force that would look at ways to strengthen animal protection laws.

Landmark Ruling: Animals Can Legally Be Considered Victims... Just Like Humans This month, the Oregon Supreme Court passed a landmark ruling that will change the way animals are treated under the law in the state for the better. The ruling will ensure that any animal can be seen as a legal “victim” in a case, affording animals more basic rights to protect them from abuse. The ruling was made in the case of a man who was convicted of starving 20 horses and goats on his property. The judge’s decision allotted a separate count of second-degree animal neglect for each animal, noting that each animal was a separate victim on his own. “To acknowledge that animals are victims of crime, that’s really common sense to us,” said Lora Dunn, staff attorney for the Animal Legal Defense Fund in Portland. The ruling could lead to longer prison sentences for those convicted of animal abuse in the state.

Shining A Light On Shelter Myths Written by ASPCA President & CEO Matt Bershadker

With somewhere between 5 and 7 million homeless animals entering U.S. animal shelters, it’s unconscionable to suggest, as one writer did in the Washington Post, that adopting a pet from an animal shelter is a bad idea. But as ridiculous as anti-shelter arguments are, they reveal destructive myths about shelter animals that need to be called out every time they arise. I’m sharing some of the most persistent ones below, and have enlisted help from ASPCA shelter science experts to help dispel them. Myth: T he major reasons dogs end up in shelters is because they were seized in criminal cases, or were too aggressive to own safely. More than half of all dogs and cats in shelters were received as strays, but that doesn’t mean by any stretch they’re automatically aggressive, come from abusive environments, or have medical challenges. What’s much more important than an animal’s history is its current behavior and medical status. This information is typically well-known and shared by shelter staff who’ve been caring for the animal. Myth: S helter animals are not as clean as pet store animals. Not only is this untrue, but the conditions of many breeding facilities or puppy mills (which supply pet stores that sell dogs) are nothing short of horrific. Puppy mill operators may fail to remove sick dogs from their breeding pools. As a result, puppies from puppy mills sometimes come with congenital and hereditary conditions including epilepsy, heart disease, kidney disease, and respiratory disorders. Puppies born in puppy mills are usually removed from their mothers at just six weeks of age, denying them critical socialization, and housed in overcrowded and unsanitary wirefloored cages, without adequate veterinary care, food or water. Make no mistake: Anything purchased at a pet store that sells animals—even supplies—is keeping this vicious industry in business.

Myth: A dopting big or very strong dogs is a bad idea if you have little children. There’s no evidence that big dogs are more likely than small dogs to harm children. Chances are, you already know some very sweet big dogs, and if you don’t, the ASPCA or your local shelter would be happy to introduce you to one. There’s been some recent debate about the inherent natures of pit bulls in particular, but again, there’s no evidence to show that pit bulls are more likely to cause harm to humans than any other breed. A dog’s—any dog’s—behavior is a function of many factors, including breeding, socialization, training, environment and treatment by owners. Myth: G etting animals from breeders is safer because the breeders know the animal’s bloodline and family history. First know that, as a result of their breeding, purebred dogs very often have genetic disorders and medical issue predispositions, certainly no less often than shelter dogs. Also, while bloodlines and histories are useful tools to assess an animal’s value, they are limited in terms of predicting behavior. On the other hand, shelters are motivated to save lives and make strong matches. Some use science and sophisticated tools to appropriately pair up animals and owners, and are happy to share everything they know about each animal. Good breeders are focused not on profit, but on the health and welfare of the individual animals they handle, and we applaud that. But the plain truth is you’re helping to save and protect more lives if you make adoption your first option, so please match your open home and open heart with an open mind.

Myth: Older cats and dogs will not bond with new owners. Again, simply untrue. Age is not a determining factor in an animal’s affection toward humans or its ability to bond with them. Just ask anyone who’s adopted an older pet, visit a shelter and ask to see their older animals, or simply look into the face of an older dog or cat. Organizations like Susie’s Senior Dogs are trying hard to connect more senior animals with loving homes. Believe me, they’re ready for you. Myth: A shelter animal should never be given as a gift. To the uninformed, this may makes sense, but data shows otherwise. A scientific study we published last October found that 96 percent of people who received pets as gifts reported it either increased or had no negative impact on their attachment to that pet. Also, 86 percent of the pets in the study are still in their homes, a percentage roughly equivalent to that found in standard adoption. The survey also showed no difference in attachment based on whether the gift was a surprise or known in advance. This is supported by previous studies conducted in the 1990s and 2000, which found that pets acquired as gifts are actually less likely to be relinquished than pets acquired directly by an in-

Jilly Bean, along with about 5 other rabbits were dumped in a North Smithfield neighborhood. She is young, probably 5 to 6 months old, spayed and good with her litterbox. She would be a great first bun for adult home or home with older, quieter child. She is happy, pretty and a good girl.

Willow was purchased just months ago from a pet store and when they were moving, they brought this bun to the shelter..she wasn’t but 4 months old.. She is now spayed and available for adoption. She is a beautiful gal, sweet and playful and would love a permanent home for the 10 years or so. She is about 6 months old now. Great first bun!

Tobias is yet another unwanted “Easter bunny” brought to a shelter. He is now neutered and great with his litterbox. He is a sweet, happy and friendly bun that begs for treats (they ALL do!) He is about 9 months old and would make a great first bun
