I

’m hesitant to proclaim that Spring has sprung since I’m looking out my window and still see bits of snow leftover from our April snowstorm. Not to worry though...change is in the air!

This year has already been full of changes for me, the magazine and my animals. I have recently moved my home and office after eight years and while this was somewhat traumatic for me, I’m amazed at how immune to the change my pups have been. I finally have the big yard I’ve been dreaming of and the dogs are in heaven. They once again have shown me that change can be and is often a very good thing. I’m starting to embrace this philosophy and find myself looking forward to some lazy summer afternoon’s camped out in the yard with the pups.

Whenever the weather starts to warm and just before it gets too hot, I tend to bring my dogs along for the ride, to everywhere I can. They love it but it might be because we often stop off at local pet boutiques for a little treat. You may not be aware but Rhode Island is home to a number of amazing pet boutiques; run be equally amazing people who are not only knowledgeable about animals but carry some of the healthiest foods and funkiest items around. I thought I would share some of these places in this issue and have featured bios as well as a “top picks” guide. I encourage you to patronize these businesses; they have unique items you can’t find anywhere else and don’t forget... all of these are local businesses who survive on your support just like we do. So please tell them the Animal Print sent you! I hope you have a wonderful spring and enjoy our new issue. Thank you, Stephanie Georgia editor

Military Dog Who Lost Leg In Afghanistan Awarded Highest War Medal For Animals A military dog who lost her leg when sniffing out a roadside bomb has been awarded the animal equivalent of the Victoria Cross after serving in more than 400 missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. Lucca, a 12-year-old German Shepherd, served in the US Marine Corps for six years, protecting the lives of troops by sniffing out munitions. Her efforts were awarded with the PDSA Dickin Medal, the highest award for animals serving in military conflict. Lucca is the 67th animal to be honored in this way and the first US Marine Corps dog to receive the medal. Lucca’s owner, Gunnery Sergeant Chris Willingham, travelled to London with Lucca to accept the medal. There were no human casualties during any of her patrols but, in 2012, she lost her leg and suffered chest burns after discovering a home-made bomb in Afghanistan. Lucca, who retired from active service following her injury, now lives with Sgt Willingham and his family in California.

{Letter To The Editor}

Dear editor, My name is Claudia, I’ve volunteered at animal shelters since 1978. l came across a man named Daniel Mackenzie who owns Bonniedale Farm Animal Sanctuary. Its a non-profit, no-kill organization and shelters abused, neglected and tortured animals. Mr. Mackenzie has dedicated his entire life to taking in and rehabilitating animals. The other day something began tugging at me incessantly to try and help this man. Daniel lost his farm where he kept the animals. Then his only helper, which was his wife, died of cancer and the person who was working on his website died. He is now renting a barn with little funds to buy a farm and no one to upgrade his website. I went to church and as soon as I walked in I glanced over to the right and there on the church bench was a single copy of The Animal Print Magazine. I took it home and the tugging began again. I started envisioning the horses, sheep, cats, dogs, pigs, llamas and many others that would no longer have a safe refuge to go to. Daniel Mackenzie has provided a safe haven to thousands of animals over decades. People like him are few and far between. Now he needs help and there’s no one there for him. He needs funds to buy a farm and a rented barn is not big enough to take in the numerous animals that come to him. He needs someone with computer knowledge to help with the website. And he needs animal lovers of all kinds to help him make the lives of our furry little friends whole again.

{14Rescue News} “Community Cat” Project

Reducing the number of free-roaming cats in the most humane ways possible is the ultimate goal of the Barrington Partnership for Animal Welfare a non-profit organization that is currently undertaking a large “Community Cat” Project in a two mile area where Barrington, RI, Swansea and Rehoboth, MA intersect. Working with residents and business owners they will identify stray and feral cats that need a helping hand. To achieve the necessary steps to get adoptable cats ready to go to forever (indoor) homes as well a spay/neuter those who are feral and therefore not adoptable, there is often extensive veterinary care, and much time and attention needed. Cats who are not

adoptable are spayed or neutered, tested for disease, vaccinated and given any other medical care they may need. They are then released in the same area they were trapped and provided with daily food, shelter and ongoing monitoring for health issues. “At this time we are focused on a particular geography, in a two mile radius area where Barrington, RI and Swansea and Rehoboth, MA intersect and where there are numerous cats need in this area with no other help.” This work is labor intensive and costly. All work is done by volunteers but funds are needed to pay for veterinary expenses and supplies! Please consider making a donation to support these efforts today. “Together we can make a difference in the life of these cats. Reducing the number of cats outdoors in thoughtful and humane ways also benefits area wildlife and overall quality of life in the neighborhood. Thank you for being part of our community!” For more information on how you can get involved or donate much needed funds, please visit Barrington Partnership of Animal Welfare online at www. barringtonpaw.org or call 401.525.77242 Donations can also be made directly to their “giving grid” at www.givinggrid.com/barn/. As of today, they have raised $135 of the $2500 needed.

SEARCHDOG SEARCHDOG is a documentary chronicalling the story of Matthew Zarrella, a Rhode Island State Police Sergeant who rehabilitates “unadoptable” pound dogs and transforms them into Search & Rescue/Recovery Dogs. Funded almost entirely through kickstarter filmakers raised $73,498 to tell the story. “SEARCHDOG found an enourmous amount of support (22,000 on Facebook and 531 Kickstarter backers) to date. The movies world premier was recently in Palm Springs and was among the top scorers in audience award voting at the Palm Springs International Film Festival! WOOF! In SEARCHDOG, we come to know Matthew and his dogs and witness extraordinary

moments over four and a half years of realtime searches as he trains troopers and their new canine partners to find missing persons. As a child, Matt Zarrella found solace and confidence in his relationships with dogs. As a teenager, he cared for shelter dogs knowing they were going to be put down. As an adult, he used that confidence and a sense of duty to help those in need, to succeed as a police officer and ultimately as an internationallyrenowned K-9 Search and Rescue/Recovery specialist. We come to understand Matthew’s motivation to help others and his empathic methods of searching for missing persons with his dogs. Ultimately, SEARCHDOG chronicles

15 transformative connections between humans and dogs where the consequences of “trusting a dog” can mean life or death for a missing victim, others where the goal is to provide answers and closure for decades-old tragedies. With passion and surprising humor – SEARCHDOG reveals rich, productive relationships in which both species learn to trust each other, and rely on each other, in performing their crucial tasks. There are no plans yet for the Rhode Island screening but the Animal Print magazine is hoping to bring this amazing and documentary here for it’s RI premiere. {Health} Caring For and Preventing Your Dog’s Ear Infections

Severe and/or recurrent ear infections cause more than chronic discomfort or even maddening acute pain for your dog; inadequately or belatedly treated, they can cause total deafness. I once helped transport a rescued Bouvier who had suffered such serious chronic infections that she required a total ear canal ablation (TECA, a procedure in which the entire middle ear canal is surgically removed). While such operations are usually a last-resort effort to both reduce the dog’s suffering and preserve the dog’s inner ear (hearing organ) and ability to hear, in this case, the damage from her many past infections was already done and she was completely deaf. While such drastic measures may occasionally be indicated for dealing with long-standing ear infections, taking a proactive approach to your dog’s ear health may save her from the need for radical treatment.

Signs of Trouble If your dog frequently shakes her head, scratches at her head or ears, rubs her head along the carpet or furniture, sits with her head cocked to one side, or whines while doing any of the above, odds are that she has or is developing an ear infection. You may also see some redness at the opening of the ear, sometimes extending outward into the pinna (ear flap). Normally, a dog’s ear has very little or no discharge, and what little you may observe is a beige/yellow waxy substance. In an infected ear, you may find anything from dry black stuff (usually associated with ear mites) to brown waxy discharge (normal, yeast, or bacterial) to pus (bacterial). An infection brings inflammation to the area, as the body attempts to flood the infected tissue with pathogen-fighting agents and flush pathogens and damaged cells away. But inflammation is always a double-edged sword, for it also can cause pain as the tissue swells. This is never more true than when the swelling is inside the ear canal – already a small, sensitive space. As the tissue inside the ear swells, the dog’s hearing may be diminished, and his balance may be affected too. Chronic inflammation can lead to ulceration, scarring, calcification, and even rupture of the ear drum.

Regular attention, gentle care, and a little sleuthing can help fend off ear infections. Written by Lisa Rodier

The pain and irritation may cause him to shake his head and claw at the ear, damaging the tissue even further and causing even more swelling. Head-shaking and scratching can also cause blood vessels in the flap of the ear to burst, causing the ear flap to swell like a balloon. This very painful condition, known as an ear hematoma, requires immediate veterinary attention. If left untreated, it can cause permanent disfigurement of the ear flap.

At the Vet Heading to your veterinarian for help with an ear infection is always a good idea, especially if you haven’t had previous experience with a canine ear infection and you aren’t certain what it looks like, or if a previously treated infection has recurred. If you are going to take your dog to the vet, don’t clean his ears that day; it maybe helpful for the veterinarian to see the appearance and amount of the discharge. The vet will clean and examine the ears, and usually will take a look deep inside the ear canal with an otoscope – that is, if the swelling in the ear canal is not too severe. Some brave veterinarians will also put their noses near the dog’s ear and take a quick sniff; the odor of an infected ear is distinctive. In mild cases, after cleaning the ear well, veterinarians will generally administer and give the owner a topical ear solution containing antibiotic, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory agents. This is typically used for a dog’s first or infrequent ear infection because, no matter what the causative organism, this type of topical will address it. In many cases, that’s all there is to the ear infection event. However, if the infection recurs, it’s likely that the treatment was incomplete, whether because the solution wasn’t applied as frequently or as well as required (sometimes the outer ear looks good, but the infection continues to fester deep within the ear canal), or because the infectious organisms developed resistance to the antibiotic in the solution. In these cases, we may wonder why the infection keeps “coming back” when, in reality, it never ever went away. Continued on next page.

Be vigilant and check your dog’s ears regularly; the moment that you notice redness or discharge, you need to clean the ears. Yeast and bacteria are normal inhabitants of a dog’s ear – in small amounts. A variety of health conditions can cause yeast or bacteria populations to spike; the goal of cleaning is to create an inhospitable environment in the ear for this to occur.

21 mold, and dust mites), but food allergies can also cause inflammation. A visit to your veterinarian, or, best yet, a board-certified veterinary dermatologist, will be your best bet for identifying (and then avoiding) the triggers for your dog’s recurrent ear infections.

One of my favorite recipes for a cleansing ear wash comes from the Encyclopedia of Natural Pet Care, by WDJ contributor CJ Puotinen. Combine 1/8 teaspoon lavender essential oil with ¾ cup witch hazel, 1 tablespoon powdered boric acid, and ¼ cup aloe vera juice or gel. Shake well before using.

Dr. Wynn emphasizes that it’s important to understand the cause when choosing a treatment. In the case of allergies, she notes, “Most people don’t seem to know that the dog’s allergies must be controlled to prevent the infections, and that isn’t always easy to do.” Treating this kind of recurrent infections with conventional or holistic strategies will fail, she says; finding and preventing the cause (rather than the symptoms) of the infection is the only permanent solution.

How often you clean your dog’s ears depends on your dog and her lifestyle; for example, dogs who swim regularly may need frequent ear cleaning. But more is not necessarily better; over-cleaning can be too drying and may lead to other problems. If your dog has very occasional signs of a mild ear infection, cleaning his ears well may stop the infection in its tracks. But if the infection persists or worsens, take your dog to the veterinarian as soon as possible for further investigation.

Dr. Wynn shares a cautionary tale about a client who had a wonderful agility dog who suffered from recurrent ear infections. When herbal/ essential oil treatments didn’t work well, the client consulted with a homeopath – long-distance. Not a veterinarian, and unable to see the dog’s ears, the practitioner recommended homeopathic treatments and suggested that the continued inflammation of the ear was essentially okay. Two years later, Dr. Wynn saw the dog again. The dog’s ear canals were calcified and the dog had become aggressive due to her constant pain.

The Root Cause

The best way to avoid ear infections?

In most cases of recurring ear infections, clearing up otitis (inflammation in the ear) is just the start of your work. Figuring out what caused your dog to develop the ear infection is your next assignment. Far and away, allergies are the most common cause of ear infections. Chronic inflammation, leading to infection as a secondary effect, is most frequently caused by environmental allergies (such as pollen,

Delmyra

Country Club for Dogs and Cats

Dr. Joel Griffies, DVM, a board-certified veterinary dermatologist (DACVD), says, “Probably the best answer can be obtained after an ear infection has occurred. Diagnosing and managing the underlying problem that is causing ear infections is the best method. We have many dogs who initially present for chronic otitis, but once their food allergies or environmental allergies are managed, they no longer suffer from recurrent infections.”

Dog’s in Rhode Island Restaurants - bill approved! The House recently approved Rep. Charlene Lima, D- of Cranston’s bill to specifically allow a restaurant with outdoor dining to permit “a patron’s dog to accompany the patron in the outdoor dining area during the hours designated by the owner of the restaurant.”

The legislation would also require the owner to prominently display “a written notice that is in a typeface that is large enough to be easily legible to the average person ... in a location that is plainly visible ... the policy of the restaurant allowing dogs in the outdoor dining area.

Some restaurants in the state are dog-friendly but until now diners with dogs and restaurants owers had no legal rights.

The legislation — now headed to the Senate — says a patron with a dog “shall keep the dog on a leash at all times ... shall not leave the dog unattended at any time in the restaurant ... shall be liable for any damages caused by the dog.”

The bill says the restaurant’s owner “shall determine the location and the amount of space in the outdoor dining area designated for a patron accompanied by a dog ... may establish limits on the size and type of dogs and any other limitations ... [and] may deny entry to the restaurant or eject from the restaurant any patron accompanied by a dog.”

BARK FOR LIFE!

The Amercian Cancer Society would like you (and your dog) to help them celebrate the lifelong contributions of canine caregivers to cancer patients at Bark For Life.

T

he celebration will include doggie games, dress-up contests, music, food, and a noncompetitive one-mile walk. Before the event, participants ask family and friends to support their efforts with monetary donations to help support the American Cancer Society’s mission of saving lives from cancer and eliminating cancer as a major health problem. “The Bark For Life event is an opportunity for people to celebrate canine companionship and fight back against cancer with their dogs,” said Caitlin Howle, ACS community manager – Relay For Life. “Every person who has been close to a cancer experience and has a dog in their life is welcome.” “In May 2014, I was diagnosed with colon cancer. I had the tumor removed and had to have chemo for six months,” said local cancer survivor Donna Hetu. “During treatment, I started searching ways I could give back. I came across Bark for Life and here I am volunteering for the second year. I love animals, dogs especially, so

Bark was the perfect venue for me. I can’t describe the emotions I felt last year when I saw dogs with the humans who love them.” Funds raised through Bark For Life help the American Cancer Society save lives by funding groundbreaking research, supporting education efforts, and providing free information and critical services for cancer patients. Last year, more than 20,000 registered canine and caregiver participants at 300 Bark For Life events across the country raised $1.2 million. In Warwick, 28 teams, for an approximate total of 200 participants, raised more than $23,000. The top fundraiser in 2015 was Diamond Hill Animal Clinic with $3,082 raised. Bark For Life will take place from 10 a. to 2 pm on Sunday, May 1, at Warwick City Park, 180 Asylum Rd., Warwick. Registration is $20 per dog. To register, visit www.relayforlife.org/barkrhodeisland, email barkforliferhodeisland@gmail.com, or call the American Cancer Society Rhode Island office at 401.243.2638.

ANIMAL RESCUE RHODE ISLAND LAUNCHES

“PAWS TO READ” PROGRAM Elementary students throughout Rhode Island hone their oral reading skills while helping to socialize adoptable pets; program volunteers sought

T

aking the time to read aloud to their children is something that many parents can’t always schedule into their busy lives. For children with learning, reading and language challenges, having the opportunity to practice reading skills aloud is a critical step in improving their grade reading levels, not to mention their self-confidence.

“When a child is reading to an animal, there is no stress, no judgment,” states Ms. Walter. “There is only unconditional attention, and it goes both ways because the animal is happy to have time outside of its cage with meaningful human interaction. It’s a great way to socialize pets in preparation for their forever homes.”

One mother in Peace Dale has found an innovative and no-cost solution to this challenge – by going to the dogs (and cats)! Her solution is a program called “Paws to Read.” It is being launched by Tammy Walter, a mother who is also the Executive Director of Animal Rescue Rhode Island (ARRI), a Wakefield, R.I.-based, nonprofit, no-kill shelter that champions abandoned, abused, surrendered and homeless animals in need with rescue, adoption, and advocacy. Based on similar initiatives she had read about, Tammy created an on-site program to not only help children with honing their reading skills, but to simultaneously provide socialization and companionship for the many adoptable animals who call ARRI their temporary home.

Sounding out words and increasing the pace of reading out loud are two ways which “Paws to Read” can help a child. According to Jim Trelease, author of the respected Read-Aloud Handbook, the link between reading aloud and school success lies in the advantage of an increased vocabulary. “Language in books is very rich and there are complete sentences,” he states in an interview on GreatSchools blog. “Reading aloud increases a child’s attention span and allows for the development of empathy due to awareness of people outside your experience.”

Here’s how it works: any Rhode Island school student in grades 1 through 4 can make an appointment to come to ARRI’s community room and read his or her favorite book or story to a cat or dog from the shelter. A volunteer from ARRI is present as a handler to the animal, and parents can choose whether or not to stay in the room. The session lasts for approximately 30 minutes and there is no cost involved.

In Keith Polette’s guide for classroom teachers, Read & Write It Out Loud!, he cites data showing that when children read aloud, it enhances fluency, strengthens comprehension and helps develop critical reading skills. Additionally, when children read aloud, they have to use expressive skills, which in turn helps them develop more confidence as readers. Ms. Walter came up with the idea for “Paws to Read” several years ago, but the former shelter did not have a suitable space. The 7,000 sq. ft. ARRI facility, completed in 2015, is located at 506B

Curtis Corner Road and features a large community room that is conducive to such interaction between people and pets. “Wherever possible, the children participating in Paws to Read will be able to choose the dog or cat they want to read to,” comments Ms. Walter. “With a volunteer present to monitor safety, each child can opt to play and interact with the animal after the reading time.” The “Paws to Read” program is geared for after-school and weekends, so appointments can be made Monday through Friday, from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm, Saturdays from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m., and Sundays from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. Appointments are based on the availability of volunteers. Doug Rubinstein, ARRI’s board president, states, ”We are very excited to be able to offer Paws to Read to children across the state. To boost a child’s confidence in reading is so important. As we all know, dogs and cats make great listeners, and our shelter pets, in particular, crave some human companionship. This truly is a win-win for all involved.” Volunteers for the “Paws to Read” program are now being sought. ADOPT ME!

Providence Animal Rescue League • www.parl.org

My name is Gunner! I am a sensitive soul that everybody falls in love with. I need someone to be my sidekick in life and help me with my confidence. I am a sweetie pie with children, but may need some space to warm up. I love other dogs (big and small!) and would probably do just fine with a cat friend.

Gordo is a special soul who really enjoys the quieter side of life. A laidback home that provides plenty of cozy spaces and time for a little rest and relaxation sounds just right. Work in a tasty meal and a little time outside in the sun, and we’ve got Gordo’s perfect day! Gordo would make a great hangout buddy, so come meet him today!

Hi! My name is Christine and I am a 5 1/2 year old female. I’m a friendly, active girl that loves attention. My feline-ality is “Personal Assistant”. You’re working on the computer? Let me press the keys. Watching TV? I’ll just plop in your lap so you can pet me. I’ll help you with all your chores, and I’ll help you relax when we’re done.

Hi! My name is Chunkette and I am a 6 year old female. I’m a calm cool and collected type of girl, and I love attention. I’m a savvy cat who knows the score. I’m pretty unflappable, too. I don’t mind entertaining myself, but a human companion at the other end of the couch and a nice scratch behind the ears always make my day.

Animal Rescue Rhode Island South Kingstownhttp • www.animalrescueri.org

Hi! My name is Max. I’m a charming canine, searching for a patient owner with a relaxed lifestyle. Sadly, my owner of 6 years passed away and left me and my brother behind. And I’m just waiting for someone to give me a place to retire for my golden years! At 100lbs, I may look as big as my personality, but I promise to be gentle.

My name is Maverick I’m a mid sized, fixed male in great shape.. but because of an abusive past, I’d do best in a patient home, with no children and where I am the only animal.I’m also fairly active, so daily walks and chew toys are a must! I may have a tough exterior, but I promise that I’ll adjust very quickly.

Hello, I am Sushi, a young female cat with a little swagger in my step. I like to play hard to get, but that doesn’t mean I am not ready and willing to find the forever home I desperately need. If you don’t mind a cat that is lively and little goofy, please look no further. I like to think of myself much like good sushi at a restaurant, fresh!

Hi, I am Hal, a sweet 2 year old male cat. I’ve been at the rescue the longest of any cats we currently have, and it is likely because I am FIV positive. Don’t let that scare you... It just means I can’t be housed with other cats that don’t have the same condition. Could you please open your doors to this lonely cat?

Sweet Binks Rabbit Rescue Foster, RI • www.rirabbits.org

I’m Jinx! I was born at Sweet Binks. When Sweet Binks took in my stray, pregnant mother. I was in a home for years but had to come back due to family issues. I’m is about 4.5 years old old, neutered, super tidy and might make a good bonding candidate. I am somewhat shy and would be placed in an adult home or bunny experienced home.

Hi, my name is Starsky. I’m 1 of 19 rabbits taken from a squalor, mattress filled garage by animal control/police dept. I was one of a few in good shape but do have some scarring around my eye from biting but no long term or problematic damage. I’m now neutered and ready to start a new chapter of his life.

I’m Elsa. I was brought in to a local shelter by someone that claims I was a stray out hopping around. I’m pretty matted but in good over all health. I am really laid back, mellow and a very sweet bunny. I am spayed and about 1.5 years old. I may be a good bonding candidate but am high maintenance.

Anna Banana cane into Sweet Binks in very tough shape. She was so matted her front legs were basically fused to her chest and she was also in a serious stasis. She is spayed, mat free and loving her new clipped down hairstyle which we highly recommend keeping and she is a hay eating champ. Anna is kind of shy, esp. around strangers.

Help Save Lives... Adopt A Pet Today! Rhode Island SPCA Riverside, RI • www.rispca.com

Hello I’m Diva! I’m a 1yr old pit who is full of love and energy! Some of my favorite things include playing fetch, snuggling, and puzzle toys! I’m a smart cookie and is very food motivated, so I would benefit greatly from some Positive Reinforcement Training to refine my manners. She is good with other dogs.

Hi, I’m Cruiser! i’m a 2-3yr old male pit who definitely would benefit greatly from Positive Reinforcement Training and a structured home. I’m quite energetic and loves to play fetch as well as a good walk or jog! I know basic commands and working to refine them and learn more during my stay at the RISPCA.

Hey, I’m Maitake! A beautiful 3 1/2 yr old spayed female who was relinquished because my owner moved to a place that would not accept cats. I’m a super sweet cat and extremely loveable. I do well on my own, as i do not like the cats in the cages next to me. I’d be perfect in a quiet single person home.

My name is Mr. Cat. I’m a fancy 10 year old neutered male whose owner passed away. It took me quite some time to feel comfortable here at the shelter, but I struts around the cat room now like I own it. I like proper introduction, with other cats to see if we’re a match together. The same goes for a low key dogs.

Handsome Dan’s Rescue for Pt Bull Type Dogs • www.handsomedansrescue.org

Hi, I’m ten week old Winnie. Please excuse my appearance as i had a painful eye which was surgically removed. I have been in foster care for about two and a half weeks. I am potty trained and know basic commands. I’m looking for a home where where my new owner(s) will be able to continue me training.

I’m Lady Maybelline and I love everyone I meet but I do prefer to be the only pet in the home. I’m wonderful with children and cuddly, affectionate, mellow and very well behaved. Update: I’ve been adopted!

I’m Tank, a resident of Cranston Shelter and a participant in Handsome Dan’s Rescue Shelter Dog Enrichment Program. I’m good with other dogs and very friendly and happy with people. Because I’m not aware of how big and strong I am, I would do best in a home without small children. I’m a great dog and will be fun in a fun home!

My name is Bowie and I’m between eight months and a year old. I was picked up as a stray and is a current resident of Cranston Shelter where the staff and volunteers have fallen fast and hard in love with me. I’m very sweet, very well mannered and friendly with everyone. We think he would do well with another dog.

Save One Soul - Wakefield • www.sosarl.org

I’m Balto, a German Shepherd Dog/Husky mix that is almost 3 years old. I have a beautiful cream and black coat. I’m also house trained, crate trained, and leash trained. Just like a typical Husky I can be a bit vocal. I like to play and have a lot of energy. I would do best with an active person or family that is looking for an active dog.

I’m Bear a “Special Needs” dog, as I’m deaf. Do not let that stop you from considering to adopt me, as deaf dogs make wonderful family members, and it’s not that different from having a dog that can hear. Deaf dogs like me can be taught hand signals. d

Hi, folks, Bentley here! I came into rescue as a puppy back in the spring of 2010. So that makes me about 5 going on 6 years old. I’m a great dog, sort of a Shepherd/Catahoula Leopard Dog mix. I’m good with other dogs and cats, and probably okay with kids, though I haven’t really been around any.

Happy Tails!

Lady Maybelline who had such a sad start, has finally found her happy ending! Lady May was rescued from a dogfighting ring in Isola, MS in April 2014 during a rescue effort called Operation Delta Dogs. She, along with 11 other dogs, spent her days attached to a heavy chain that was bolted and padlocked into her collar. Thankfully Animal Rescue Corps saved the day, and she was taken in by Handsome Dan’s Rescue for Pit Bull Type Dogs here in Rhode Island and set up with loving foster parents Amanda Duncan and Dan Ferrara Jr. With lots of love, patience, and the Outbound Hounds’ Pits and Pals C.L.A.S.S., Lady Maybelline soon blossomed into the wonderful, affectionate, and resilient dog that was hiding under the once scared, timid exterior. It may have taken almost two years, but the people at HDR (and Lady May’s many fans) never lost hope that she’d find the perfect home, and who’d have thought it would be someone in HDR’s backyard? Her new parents Erika and Doug Heal of Cumberland were married last year and in lieu of wedding favors, they made a donation to HDR! What better pair to welcome Lady Maybelline into their family? With Erika and Doug, she can be the only pet in the home and get all the attention she deserves! She also has a big fenced-in yard to run in, and even has her own room.

Enjoy your new family, Lady Maybelline! You deserve it, and we are so so so happy for you! While Lady May is definitely one-of-a-kind, there are plenty of adoptable dogs at Handsome Dan’s that need loving forever homes. Check them out on www.handsomedansrescue.org.
