{Letter From The Editor}
S
omehow, while I wasn’t paying attention, December has crept in. I blame the amazing fall weather we’ve been experiencing, which has made me feel that we’re just barely saying goodbye to summer. Okay, that might be a stretch, but it wasn’t until I began putting this issue together that the holiday spirit started to become more than just a distant thought.
One article in particular, not only put me into the holiday mood, but also touched me on a few levels. The story about Maggie’s Pet Pantry written by Traer Scott is the kind that inspires a person to want to give and help those less fortunate, especially at this time of year. Carol Terranova’s story also touched me further when the photo of her and Maggy arrived into my e-mail box. Maggy, the groups namesake, recently passed away at the age of 14 and something about this photo made my heart ache for Carol’s loss. The love that shines thru that photo is almost palpable and reminded me of some other friends going thru, or about to go thru the loss of their beloved pet. Dennis & Buddha, Traer, Jesse & Cricket and Laurie & Zach...please know that your friends are thinking about you. Read about Maggie’s Pet Pantry on page 20. The holiday edition of the Animal Print would not be complete without a roundup of some great gifts ideas, found locally. Being a local business owner, I encourage you to buy local and support your local business owners whenever possible! I hope you find the perfect gift on pages 25-28. And lastly, as you may have heard, voting is open for our Top Dog Readers Choice Awards. If you have not yet done so, don’t forget to Bark The Vote. This year we’re offering one random voter an iPad2, just for voting! (thanks to our sponsor, Moriarty’s Invisible Fence). Find out more on page 9. Please have a warm, wonderful and safe holiday season and enjoy the new issue. Thank You, Stephanie Georgia Editor

Japanese Snap Up Dog Raincoats To Protect Their Pooches From Radiation It is a response to Japan’s nuclear meltdown that few were expecting. Dog owners worried about radiation following the Fukushima accident have cleared the shelves of protective pet raincoats. The doggie jackets are now considered a vital survival strategy for animals living in areas near the power plant. It is hoped that the colourful coats will protect them from the effects of nuclear rain soaking through their fur. Vets have warned that because dogs are close to the ground and forage in shrubbery and the ground, they are at risk from airborne radiation, which is concentrated in areas where rainwater collects.

First Dogs Came from East Asia, Genetic Study Confirms Researchers at Sweden’s KTH Royal Institute of Technology say they have found further proof that the wolf ancestors of today’s domesticated dogs can be traced to southern East Asia -- findings that run counter to theories placing the cradle of the canine line in the Middle East. Dr Peter Savolainen, KTH researcher in evolutionary genetics, says this new study confirms that an Asian region south of the Yangtze River was the principal and probably sole region where wolves were domesticated by humans.

The Food and Drug Administration is again cautioning consumers that chicken jerky products for dogs (also sold as chicken tenders, strips or treats) may be associated with illness in dogs. In the last 12 months, FDA has seen an increase in the number of complaints it received of dog illnesses associated with consumption of chicken jerky products imported from China. These complaints have been reported to FDA by dog owners and veterinarians. FDA is advising consumers who choose to feed their dogs chicken jerky products to watch their dogs closely for any or all of the following signs that may occur within hours to days of feeding the products: decreased appetite; decreased activity; vomiting; diarrhea, sometimes with blood; increased water consumption and/or increased urination. If the dog shows any of these signs, stop feeding the chicken jerky product. Owners should consult their veterinarian if signs are severe or persist for more than 24 hours. Blood tests may indicate kidney failure (increased urea nitrogen and creatinine). Urine tests may indicate Fanconi syndrome (increased glucose). Although most dogs appear to recover, some reports to the FDA have involved dogs that have died.

Deadly or Not?
Busting the Poinsettias Myth Can you believe it’s December already? Candy canes, twinkly lights and bow-topped gifts abound. But before we bring out the eggnog, it’s high time we clear the air about one type of holiday décor that has gotten a pretty bad rap: the poinsettia. Believe it or not, pet parents, these festive plants are not the deadly flowers legend has made them out to be. The myth of the plant’s toxicity actually began in the early part of the 20th century, after the twoyear-old child of a U.S. Army officer allegedly died from consuming a poinsettia leaf. As a result of this rumor, the plant has never lived down its poisonous reputation. Okay, so you still don’t necessarily want your pets to eat them. Because consuming poinsettias may cause mild gastrointestinal irritation, keeping these plants out of pets’ reach is still a good idea. But there’s no need to banish them altogether. So, what do you say? Let’s give this plant a break—I hear they make quite the centerpiece. Courtesy of the ASPCA.org Blog ALL OF US AT BONE APPETIT WISH YOU A HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON! Top Ten Holiday
Dangers For Cats The holiday season has arrived and the The Animal Print along with the CATalyst Council, a national initiative comprised of animal health and welfare organizations working on behalf of cats, is reminding cat owners that there are some things they need to be wary of during this festive time of year.
Dangerous wrapping
Brightly colored bows and ribbons are a festive and enjoyable part of the holiday season, but remember that ribbon can be extremely dangerous for your cat. If ingested, it can cause a cat’s intestines to bunch and get twisted, and in many cases this will need to be remedied with surgery. If left untreated, this can be fatal.
Hanging ornaments
From your cat’s perspective, low-hanging ornaments on a tree are just begging to be swatted at and then played with on the floor. If you have any low-hanging ornaments on your tree, be sure that they are made of materials that your cat can’t chew or otherwise destroy and ingest.
Poisonous plants
While poinsettias have long been believed to be extremely dangerous for cats, the danger they pose when ingested by a cat (stomach upset) is not as bad as some other common holiday plants, such as mistletoe, pine tree needles, amaryllis lilies, red azaleas and paperwhites. If you have festive plants, make sure they are somewhere your cat won’t be tempted to chew on them. If you are unsure if a plant is poisonous, or are concerned that your cat may have eaten something dangerous, call your veterinarian or the ASPCA’s animal poison control center (888-426-4435) for more information.
Candles
Your cat probably isn’t going to be too intrigued by the candle itself, but a wayward swishing tail can easily knock a candle over, causing a host of problems. Keep candles out of reach, and make sure you stay vigilant around lit candles. The last thing you need over the holidays is an injured cat or fire damage to your home.

Holiday foods
While it may be tempting to give your cat just a nibble of turkey or other holiday food, resist the urge. Rich foods can upset a cat’s digestive system, which could produce unpleasant effects. Also, cats should never be given any type of bone, as they can splinter and cause internal injuries to your cat.
Stress
Cats like routine and predictability, so when their schedules or environments change, they can become upset. If you are planning on having holiday guests and your cat isn’t used to entertaining, create a safe, quiet space away from the action where your cat can have some peace and quiet. Dr. Brunt, CATalyst Council’s Executive Director and a feline veterinarian for more than 20 years, adds, “Be sure to have food, water and a litter box available in this secluded area so your cat can be comfortable away from your gathering.”
Tinsel
Like ribbon, tinsel is almost irresistible to cats and, if ingested, it can require surgery to extract. Which would you rather live without: tinsel or a night at the veterinary emergency clinic?
Cats given as gifts
Every companion animal deserves a home where it will be wanted and well taken care of. Shelters nationwide report an uptick in new arrivals right after the holidays, when people surrender the “gift pet” that they may not have wanted.
Christmas tree water
The water that keeps your tree fresh is frequently treated with chemicals that can make your cat sick. Be sure that your cat can’t access the tree water.
Travel dangers
If you are traveling with your cat during the holidays, be sure that your cat is properly secured in a carrier and that he or she has adequate identification, including a microchip. That way, if you get separated, your cat has a way to be reunited with you. Also, prior to leaving home, find contact information for a veterinarian or an emergency veterinarian in the area you’re visiting, so that, if your cat gets injured or becomes ill, you know where to go to get your cat the care and attention it requires. Enjoy the holiday season with your cat and, as always, if you have questions or concerns, contact your veterinarian. They are your best resource for information about your feline friend. Come Back! Teaching your dog to come when called.
Y
ou’re late for work and the dog is staring at you from the backyard while you call and call. You take a step and it begins – the “come catch me” game.
time to stop playing with your best friend because you have to go into the house and sit by yourself.” Would you come to you?
On the other extreme, you’re walking down the street when your dog sees a squirrel, lurches forward, yanks the leash out of your hand, and books it down the road and straight into traffic.
Some useful tips to keep in mind:
One scenario is really annoying, the other outright dangerous. But both can be resolved! With a little bit of time, patience, and training you too can have a dog who comes when called!
• No matter how long it takes to get there, never punish your dog when he comes to you.
Humans often unintentionally teach their dogs that “Come here” means run AWAY. We do this in several ways. One is by calling a misbehaving dog to us and punishing them when they arrive. For example, you call and call your dog and when they finally arrive, yell at them for not coming faster. Or we call the dog to us only to do something unenjoyable, like trim their nails or give them a bath. The most common example? We call dogs to us because it’s time to stop playing. “Come here, Fido – it’s
• Spay or neuter your dog to remove any hormonal drive to run away.
• Keep your dog contained or leashed until he’s trained so he doesn’t have a chance to practice the “catch me if you can” game • Make coming when called a game that starts playtime! Set your dog up in an enclosed area or in the house. Whenever your dog comes to you, praise and pet him, and start playing his favorite game. Continued on page16.

Maggie’s Pet Pantry: Keeping Pets Home For The Holidays, And Beyond.
T
by Traer Scott “Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does.”- William James
hroughout the holiday season, we are faced with many iconic symbols of charity and giving, which are meant to inspire the Secret Santa inside us all. The Salvation Army’s ringing bell outside the market; the Toys for Tots bins; and of course holiday food drives which help put nourishment on the tables of our neighbors who might otherwise go without. But what happens to the animals whose owners can no longer afford to put food in their bowls? Sadly many end up being reluctantly surrendered to shelters, joining the 5-7 million other homeless pets nationwide whose fate is uncertain. These days many devoted pet owners simply can’t find the funds to feed their beloved animals and this had led to a sharp increase in animal surrenders nationwide. Rather than watch their animal go hungry, folks feel that at a shelter at least their dog or cat will get daily meals and basic vet care. This sharp upturn in surrenders, however, has shelters, many of which were already struggling from a decline in donations or state funding, stretched to the max. With resources and potential adoptive homes dwindling, the future for surrendered animals in shelters is often less than
optimistic: ASPCA statistics indicate that 60 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats in shelters nationwide end up being euthanized. Keeping pets with the people who love them is crucial and in times of economic struggle definitely not easy, but as they say, change starts at home. In November of 2010, one Rhode Island woman decided to do something to help enable financially stressed families to hold on to their animals. While watching the nightly news, Carol Terranova, a retired schoolteacher, had a sudden burst of inspiration. “Last November the boy scouts were doing their annual Thanksgiving food drive and I wondered if anyone thought about the needs of the animals”, says Terranova. “I happened to be watching a segment on ‘making a difference’ and I thought a pet pantry could definitely help.” Hence the idea for Maggie’s Pet Pantry was born. Maggie’s Pet Pantry- named in honor of Terranova’s beloved yellow lab Maggie, whom she recently lost at the age of 14- is a donation based pet food pantry in Richmond, Rhode Island aimed at giving a helping hand to families who are struggling to
21
provide food for their pets. “We see new faces coming in every week seeking assistance. Maybe they have lost their jobs, are living on a frugal retirement income, or have endured an illness,” Terranova states. “There is no one turned away and you don’t have to live in the town of Richmond to receive help.” Terranova estimates that she has been able to help 40-50 individuals over the past year who otherwise would not have been able to provide food for their pets- but offering year-round assistance means a constant demand for donated food. “No one should have to make the decision of giving up their pet or not being able to feed them properly”, states Terranova. “We would like to help as many as possible, but because we rely solely on individual donations, this becomes harder to sustain.” Maggie’s Food Pantry now has a permanent building next to the Carol & M aggie photo cour Richmond Animal Shelter at 51 Buttonwood Road in Richmond, tesy of Ma ggie’s Pet Pantry Rhode Island. They accept donations on Mondays from 2-4pm and Saturdays from 10am-noon. Food collection bins have also been set up at several locations including Doggie Depot Pet Grooming and easing the hunger of an animal in need, but you’ll be Incredible Threads in Wyoming, Crandall House Senior Services helping to keep them ‘home for the holidays’- and beyond. in Ashaway, and the Hope Valley Post Office. So this holiday season, as you are doling out another bowl of kibble to your kitty or sneaking Fido a bit of Christmas ham, remember to donate to a pet food pantry. Not only will you be

Jeff and Linda Gellman of the radio show What Would Jeff Do? & Solid K-9 Training recently hosted a fundraiser for the eductiona and rescuing of shelter animals to benefit the Millan Foundation. The “pre-event” fundraiser was in conjuctions with Cesar Millan’s recent visit to the PPAC. “We were able to raise and donate $2500.00 for Cesar Millan and his foundation the MIllan Foundation and presented him with the check while he was in town.” Conratulations to the Gellmans for their hard work at raising funds for this wonderful organization. The Millan foundation is a non-profit foundation designed to aid and support the rescue, rehabilitation and placement of abused and abandoned dogs. “The Rescue” Was A Great Success! It was time to “eat, drink and bid your tails off” at the Providence Animal Rescue League’s signature fundraising event, “The Rescue” which was held this past November at the Johnson & Wales Culinary Arts Museum in Providence! In its 5th year, The Rescue boasted an evening of swanky spirits, fabulous food and spectacular auctions. The Animal Print is proud to sponsor this event every year and co-donate with Traer Scott, the coveted Cover Dog auction item to one lucky bidder! This year the cover went for the winning bid of $1600! The event raised a total of $28,000 in total which, will be a huge help in PARL’s mission to save and support homeless animals. Thank you to everyone who attended and donated and a special thank you to PARL for the amazing work that you do!

Danielle is a beautiful and affectionate rottie/shepherd mix. Danielle gets along great with people but would prefer to be your only canine companion. Maddie is a sweet, playful and mellow gal. She was left behind in an apartment when the tenant moved out. We estimate Maddie to be under 1 year or about 1 year but can not be sure of ages. Maddie is spayed and doing great with her litter box. She may make a good bonding candidate too.
Char is a great bun! She is an adult, we estimate her to be about 2 years old or so. She is spayed, friendly and does well with her litter box. She is affectionate and playful and she will likely make a good bonding candidate too. Thank you Gina & family!
Max arrived at Sweet Binks from the MSPCA and he was a little scraggly. He has had quite the clip down and he does require routine grooming care. Max is fun, sweet and playful. He is neutered and doing well with his litter box. We don’t have any history on Max but estimate him to be between 1 year old.
Fiona arrived severely matted and she got quite the clip down (as seen in these pictures!) She is young, energetic and she is sweet. She is spayed and estimated to be about 9 months old or so. She will require grooming maintenance and we can teach you how.

Irene came to us the day before Hurricane Irene as a stray and ready to have 6 beautiful babies. She went to a wonderful foster home and took care of her sweet litter and now is back and ready for adoption. Like most new mama cats she prefers to be the only feline. She could live with older kids and maybe even a dog.
Jana is a firecracker folks! She is a rough and tumble little girl that likes to make decisions for herself. She is very independent but every now and then steps off her pedestal to mingle with us common folks. She needs to be the only pet.
Hunter is the cat for you if your looking for a mouser or a barn cat. His feisty personality will definitely entertain you. He might be able to live with a dog and other cats, but he probably wouldn’t be the best for small children.
Sherbert is sweet as can be! That’s how he came to get his name here at the shelter. This calm guy would do great in a home with other cats and possible dogs. He doesn’t seem to mind children either. Adopt this sweet treat today.

Candidates should be over 18 with health insurance and able to commit to one day a week for at least a year. Hours are 11-3. Become a Foster Home For Rescue Dogs Fostering a rescue dog is an extremely rewarding experience. Friends of Homeless Animals, a 501(c)(3) non-profit is made up of all volunteers, located mostly in the Northeast. All our dogs are housed in foster homes which are 100% volunteer. We are one of the largest ‘all volunteer’ rescues in the Northeast. We check references and conduct a home visit. If you rent we must have your landlord’s name and phone number to verify you are allowed to have a dog. Most dogs are evaluated, and vetted prior to entering into foster care. You supply the food and a safe and loving environment. Some dogs need help with house training, socialization and obedience. For more information or to fill out a foster application please email friendsoha@yahoo.com or call 401.234.4499 We look forward to hearing from you!

Vicky, Scott & Ducky Photo by Traer Scott
What do you do for a living? Scott: Newspaper editor Vicky: Mighty huntress and chief intimidator of squirrels Ducky: What? I’m Ducky! I eat and play, dunk my head in the water bowl and sleep. Where are you from? Scott: I grew up in New Hampshire (Live Free or Die!), but have lived in Providence for years now. Vicky: I was found as a stray and taken into foster care before being adopted with help from Above and Beyond English Setter Rescue. Ducky: I was surrendered by a dog hoarder in Iowa in October and living in squalid conditions before being rescued by volunteers from Above and Beyond English Setter Rescue If you had a superpower what would it be? Scott: Spontaneous combustion. Vicky: The Skunk Eye. I’d glower, and all would know my utter disapproval. Ducky: Overpowering cuteness, which would compel everyone to give me more treats. Do you have a motto? Scott: Sleep is for the weak. Vicky: Pray tell, good madam/sir, whose dog are you? Ducky: Can I have that?
