made me want to cry happy tears, hug my dogs and dedicate my letter to the life of this amazing and very lucky dog and it’s family. “It appears almost too good to be true, but a dog has been found alive and well adrift at sea, an astonishing three weeks after the tsunami that devastated Japan. The dog appears to have survived by living in a partially submerged house that had been swept out to sea. Local television showed an aerial view of a brown medium-sized dog trotting around the roof of the house — the only part of it floating above water — before disappearing inside through a broken section of the roof. The coast guard rescuer tried to coax the dog out, but then went in after tearing a wider opening. He came out with the dog in his arms and they were transported back to safety by boat. The dog, named Ban was reunited with his owner after she saw the dogs rescue on television. Ban jumped to her owner and wagged her tail at their reunion more than three weeks after Japan’s tsunami.”

Meet Mitzi, The Bionic Dog A German Shepherd called Mitzi has become the first dog in the world to be fitted with a pioneering prosthetic ankle. The three year old had her rear right foot amputated after she was trampled by a horse. The lively dog is back to enjoying walks with her owner after being fitted with an artificial foot and ankle by pioneering UK vet Dr Noel Fitzpatrick. The prosthesis is the first in the world to have been inserted into a fully moving bone and allows Mitzi to walk with a normal gait and no limp. Dr Fitzpatrick was the first vet in the world to offer prosthetic limbs to pets using Intraosseous Transcutaneous Amputation Prosthesis (ITAP) technology. “It’s a permanent fixture, it is part of the dog’s body. The dog just gets on with life. Before ITAP came into being there was no way to give an animal a prosthesis.”

A gray and white tabby by the name of Smokey has catapulted to fame with purring so loud it has been recorded at a potentially record setting 73 decibels. The British community college that measured the sound said it peaked at 16 times louder than that of the average cat. The 12 year old, ordinary size feline first came to national attention last month when her owner, Ruth Adams, decided to run a local competition for the most powerful purr. Dear editor, I’ve read quite a bit lately on various websites about how terrible the rescues are from the south and how the animals arrive sickly and with problems, so I thought I would show you a picture of my dog Sammie. riday, March 11th was just like any other snowy day in Sendai, Japan. Cats lounged in their homes, dogs trotted along on daily walks, and cows munched lazily as children studied hard in school, and busy Japanese citizens went about their normal days. That is until 2:46 in the afternoon. Every news source tells the horrific stories and the death toll continues to climb to an estimated 20,000 lives. That’s the equivalent of every man, woman, and child in Central Falls or North Attleboro dying in a matter of days. We can’t even imagine the devastation. And we will never comprehend the number of animals lost. In a video interview, Dick Green of the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), walks through the decimated city: “I just don’t think any animal could have survived…If

they were in this area, they more than likely died.” An unknown number of cats met a slow and terrifying death as they instinctively hunkered down, hiding in small spaces, trying to become invisible to the rubble that crushed them, or the water that washed over them. Thousands of farm animals, unable to swim, confined to the stalls that were always intended to keep them safe. Trapped, as the ceilings and walls collapsed around them, with nowhere to run. Dogs left behind by families that were forced to flee with only their children in their arms. Left to look for food, stay warm in the cold weather, and wait for their people to return...injured, lost, scared, and alone. If you have a heart, any part of this event will break it.

But there is bright side to this tail. One example comes from the Kikuchi family, forced away from their home too quickly to rescue their dogs from the yard. Two days later, Mr. Kikuchi walked from the emergency shelter to his home with little hope that his dogs were alive. To his surprise, Towa, a two-year-old Sheltie and Melody, a one-year-old Golden Retriever, were waiting for him! “I don’t know how they survived. I was happy to see them because I had felt badly about leaving them behind,” said Mr. Kikuchi. He fed, watered, and cleaned up the dogs and went back to the shelter to share the news with his family, who soon came back to check on the dogs. It’s so good to see them.” Mr. Kikuchi’s family will walk back to their dogs everyday to care for Towa and Melody, but won’t bring them to the shelter. “There are lots of people dead and it’s too much to ask to bring the dogs,” said Mr. Kikuchi. “It would be inconsiderate to other people’s sadness.” (Excerpts from Wall Street Journal, March 16, 2011) Some of you may have seen the YouTube video of the brown and white dog that would not leave his injured companion – clearly trying to tell rescuers that his friend needed help. The connection between the two animals is palpable as one dog tries desperately to save his companion. This story, too, has a happy ending. effort to help the animals impacted by the earthquake, tsunami, and evacuations. Tracy told me the Japanese government has identified the Japan Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the Japan Animal Welfare Society, along with the Japan Pet Care Association and the Japan Veterinary Medical Association, as the Relief of Animals in Emergencies. Their mission is to transport rescue supplies, provide financial support, and meet the animal response requests in local areas. International organizations, like IFAW and World Society for the Protection of Animals are working closely with Relief of Animals and so far, are the ONLY groups that have been officially invited by the Japanese government to assist inside Japan. In fact, the Japanese government has asked foreign nongovernmental organizations to not come to Japan until they are requested. National disaster response organizations, like Red Star, are working closely with and assisting their international partners and await further instruction. Once the situation in Japan is safe and stabilized enough for responders, Red Star may be deployed.

Tracy told me, sadly, at this point itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not really a search and rescue effort as responders on the ground are engaged in a recovery effort. The primary focus right now is safety of the responders, and caring for the pets that managed to make it to the emergency shelters. The cats and dogs brought to the shelters by their families are not allowed into the human shelters for safety and health reasons, so most are forced to wait outside tied, housed in cars, or secured in crates. Tracy said they are terrified, cold, and hungry. So far, Red Star has provided $10,000, along with critically needed animal

supplies, to support local animal relief efforts for the thousands of animals displaced by the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear emergency. And there is more where that came from. When asked if pets would be transported out of Japan, Tracy made it very clear that is not in the best interest of anyone â&#x20AC;&#x201C; primarily the animals. By bringing animals from Japan on a large scale, or from any other area for that matter, space would have to be made for them – which means other animals would have to die. Additionally, relocated Japanese pets would have no chance of being reunited with the families who miss and love them so dearly. Tracy added that transporting animals out of Japan, even on a small scale, is incredible stressful for the animals who would be forced to ride in the belly of a plane for 27 hrs, endure a mandatory 90 day international quarantine, and interact with humans from a completely different culture speaking a completely different language. The amount of stress would simply be inhumane. So what can you do? Tracy said there are three things you can do. First, donate. Tracy asks that donations be financial donations, rather than supplies, especially perishable supplies like food or medicine. Warehousing of supplies that are not yet needed and pick-up of shipped supplies are becoming burdensome for responders on the ground who are forced to deal with limited gas, vehicle, and personnel resources. or you can wait to see what happens next. The need will be on-going, and future projects will be identified. Several organizations are worthy of donations, but Tracy urges you to do your research. Make sure the organization you choose is legitimate and that your funds will actually go to the animals. Additionally Tracy advises you to avoid attempting to donate directly to Japanese organizations, as the banking system and transfer of money is very complicated and cumbersome. A big problem in most disasters and a major reason why most animals don’t survive or are never reunited with their families is lack of preparation. The situation in Japan is devastating worldwide – it’s not just Japan’s problem. I’m asking you to do what you can: five dollars, five hundred dollars, five thousand dollars – it doesn’t matter. And I know as well as anyone, we are all finically strapped, we are all busy, and we are all in our own tough spot. I was laid off from American Humane Association less than a month ago when my department was cut for financial reasons. But if my work was cut to allow money to go the Red Star team’s work, then I couldn’t be happier. If you don’t think there’s anything you can do, then set this magazine down, look your pet in the eyes, and ask yourself: “What if it happened to me?”

only see this college classmate and suite-mate at alumni reunions, in spring or fall, at 5 or 10 year intervals. Each time we meet I find out new and wondrous facets of his character, his fate, his personal progress. Doug was a blond boy from Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, and Yale introduced him to people from quite different backgrounds. He met Miriam at a Vassar “mixer” dance. She was small and dark, wore glasses (and a golden cross necklace) and spoke with a European accent. She was not at all his “type.” He rescued her from a fellow who treated her discourteously, and, at the close of our senior year, he married her. They had three lovely blonde daughters, one of whom graduated from our alma mater, and her own son in turn is a freshman at Yale. Doug and Miriam have ten grandchildren! At a previous New Haven rendezvous I found out the story of that necklace. It seems that Miriam put it on to protect herself from the anti-semitism of her girlhood in nazi-occuped Czechoslovakia. Her mother, in fact, had been a prisoner in Terezin, the death-camp near Prague. And Doug befriended his mother-in-law throughout her life. But all this is only a prelude to my narrative. It has to do with pets, not persons. “You may not believe this, but I had a parakeet in my law office in Washington, D.C. Like me, its best friend, my bird preferred classical music to talk radio. It went in for Mozart. The amazing thing is, it knew what button to press with its beak to turn on the sound. And, beyond that, yes, this is true, it could pick out the correct knob to hit to find the right music station!” Now, if it were somebody else showing off this performing parrot, I might write if off as a standard start of a joke. But not with Doug. He is honest, investigative, reliable, trustworthy as a boy scout. He went on. “I also kept tropical fish in a large tank. There was a large sort-of catfish that kept the aquarium clean. And it seemed to greet me and even follow my movements in the room. I really felt that we were chums. You know, Miriam and I have always had an excellent marriage, even though I don’t bring her to our reunions. Sometimes we have disagreements with our Continued on page 33.

Keep Every-Bunny Safe This Easter Easter and spring are a great time of year to get outside after winter, and enjoy the blooming flowers and fresh air. For people who celebrate Easter with chocolate goodies and Easter egg hunts, there are some tips to keep in mind to keep your pets safe.

1. As with other holidays and celebrations, keeping chocolate away from pets is a must. According to www.bellaonline.com “…for a 10 pound dog, about 10 ounces of milk chocolate, 3 ounces of semi-sweet chocolate, or just one ounce of baking chocolate could be lethal.”

2. Keep an eye out for spring flower mixes and bouquets. Many of those plants are poisonous to all types of animals, including reptiles.

3. Beware of plastic grass for stuffing Easter baskets. This filling is not digestible and can cause intestinal damage if consumed by your pets.

4. If you create an Easter egg hunt in your backyard, make sure to get all the hardboiled eggs out of their hiding places. If left outside, the egg could rot and then be eaten by your pet. To guarantee this doesn’t happen, substitute plastic eggs, for real ones or draw a map of where you’ve hidden them all so you can double check that they’ve been found.

NorthPaws Veterinary Center Puts the “Green” in Greenville On June 5, 2011 NorthPaws Veterinary Center will open its doors to a bright green future. Their charming blue Victorian has been thoughtfully redesigned and repurposed into a state-of-the-art veterinary facility. The warm welcome that patients of Drs. Mark and Danielle Paradise have long been accustomed to is now energized by a new geothermal heating system and energy-efficient lighting. It is the fulfillment of a lifelong dream for these two dedicated veterinarians combining their passions for a very caring approach to advanced technique veterinary medicine and environmental sustainability. Walk up the welcoming wraparound porch (constructed with decking from recycled materials) and enter the spacious interior that has been completely renovated using recycled building materials and low VOC paints. Lighting controls activate when you enter and exit any treatment, exam, storage or lounge rooms to provide the highest efficiency in energy consumption. Humo is a super sweet 1 year old Pitbull. He loves to be the center of attention and will overload you with kisses! He is very well behaved and knows his basic commands! He can sometimes be a little nervous with new people and situations, but warms up very quickly!

Denver is a super sweet 3 1/2 year Terrier Mix. He is a beautiful fellow with a beaming personality! He loves to run around and play fetch with sticks! He’s a gentle boy however he can get nervous at times, but warms up quickly once he’s comfortable.

Nala is around 5 years old and was brought in when her owner moved out of state. Nala is very friendly once she knows you but can take awhile to warm up. Nala would do best in an adults-only home with no other pets.

Honey Bunches of Cat is a little girl with a big name! She is definitely as sweet as honey! She is a friendly, affectionate lap cat who likes to be held. She has lived with children and other cats before. Honey especially likes to sit in cabinet drawers!

Max is a 9 year old Shepard Husky mix. His owners moved to a place that didn’t allow dogs so he had to be brought to the shelter. He is a sweet boy. Max’s favorite thing to do is swim! He would do good in an active household, where people could take him hiking and swimming.

Mimi is an 11month old pitbull mix. She is a beautiful girl and very sweet. She loves kids but would do best in a home with children above the age of 10. We are unsure how she is with other dogs or cats. She is still young and would benefit from some training. She will need a lot of exercise.

Anya is currently receiving medical care at the RISPCA, but will be available for adoption once she is healthy (‘she’ has not officially been gendered yet). Anya was left behind in an apartment and discovered an unknown time later by police, after both the heat and electricity had been shut off.

Sunny is a sweet, somewhat shy little 2 year old Netherland mix. She will be spayed soon and will be available to go home after that. Sunny came to us because her family no longer had time for her. She has lived with children and a dog, and may also make a good bonding candidate.

Let Stella take the streetcar named desire into your heart! She is a dominant darling dog that loves to have it her way or the highway. She is currently in our Headstart Program to help her to learn her manners and to make her the best dog that she can be. She would do best in a home with adults.

Mocha is the perfect mix of savory and sweet! He’s great to cuddle up with late at night like a nice piece of chocolate and perky like a hot morning coffee. Mocha would do well in a home with older children and has lived with another dog, however he would not do well in a home with small animals.

Roxie is a showgirl sentenced to do time at the shelter for not playing nicely with children. We got her a top notch lawyer and this dame was acquitted. She prefers gentlemen and would do great as an only pet.

Dutchess is a spayed female tortie Domestic Short hair mix. She is about 2 years and 2 months old and is a sweet, playful kitty. She would do well in a home with kids and has lived with another cat. She really LOVES feather toys!

Benjamin is friendly and active. He is great with kids and only ended up looking for a new home because one of his kids was allergic to him. Benjamin greets strangers with kisses. He has never been with cats, and needs a slow introduction to other dogs.

Betty Sue is sweet and affectionate. She was brought to our shelter by an agency that had helped rescue her from a bad situation. She is a little nervous but loves to be around people. She just wants hugs and pets and kisses. Betty Sue came to us very malnourished and with pressure sores on her wrists.

Buddy is a big, friendly puppy! He has been exposed to lots of children and loves to play with them. He is affectionate and food motivated. Buddy still needs a bit of socializing with stable dogs that will enforce some manners. He seems to want to chase cats.

Tyson really is a Chocolate Lab, but acts much more like your typical Chessie than like a lab. As any of you Chessie fans know, there are a few distinct differences in personality. He could get along with the right other dog, something without a dominant personality, but one that’s not overly timid either.

Tangerine is a Domestic Short Hair-Orange about 1-2 years old and very timid with people. Other cats OK. Adult only home with cat experience.

Ringo is a sweet timid boy who is just under a year old. He was born under a dumpster at a CVS on a very busy road. He lived under the dumpster the first 5 months of life until a kind samaritan brought him to the shelter in hopes of a better future for him. Now and we are desperately trying to find him a home.

Charlotte is an adorable chubby-faced young kitty about a year old. She gave birth under a woodpile in someone’s yard. That person brought her and her babies to the shelter where they would be kept safe. Charlotte’s babies have all been adopted and she is waiting patiently for her turn at a forever home.

Jeep is a sweet, affectionate boy. I would benefit greatly from a good long walk every day since I have a lot of energy and I like to bark, but then again, you would probably bark too if you were in a kennel for this long. I like to rub up and snuggle against the volunteers who come to play with me, so I have the potential to make a great lap dog.

Ashley came into Sweet Binks right after the New Year. She was going to be a New Years Day dinner and thankfully, family members intervened and she was saved. She is a gorgeous bun, long eye lashes, about 11 lbs and long… She is spayed now and doing great with her litter box.

Bobby was born at Sweet Binks when his mom and dad were picked up by a local animal control and mom (Gina, adopted) gave birth shortly thereafter. His brother Blaze was recently adopted as a bond mate but Bobby is a little shyer and would be best adopted into an adult home.

Gigi was turned in to a local animal control but no information was taken on her… We believe she is about 3 years old and she was lactating when she arrived. She was very hormonal! Now she is spayed and hormones are balancing out and she won’t be quite so grumpy! She is a sweet rabbit.
