{Letter From The Editor}

I

t’s hard to believe that spring is about to arrive...technically it’s here, but did they just say snow in the forecast? Soon the cold nights spooning with my dogs, freezing early morning walks and all too short days will be a distant memory. While the pups are always up for a romp in any season, I’m certainly not alone in my excitement for dog hikes, runs and walks in the warming temperatures of Spring. I’m looking forward in particular to the next few weeks when I begin to tally your votes for the Top Dog

Reader’s Choice Survey. Every year, without fail, while peaking at some of the write-in responses I discover some new hiking trail, pond or just a unique place to enjoy with the pups. One of those unique places is the studio of the Warren based artist William Shaff, who’s quirky and beautiful pet portraits are featured within the pages of this issue. Will is a long time dog lover with an open door policy that is often extended to the furry visitor variety. I met Will many years ago when he first adopted his dog Corinna (R.I.P) and over the years I’ve enjoyed seeing her appear in much of his intensely emotional work. His pet portraits, often of deceased pets are just a tiny segment of his artwork. As you’ll read in the article, Will is struggling right now as many artists do and I encourage you to commission him and/or join the campaign to save his home if you are able. Also, I would like my readers to be the first to learn about plans that are currently underway for the First Annual 5K for Canine Cancer Research event coming to Rhode Island this fall - the first of it’s kind in the area! As you may remember, I lost my dog Harvey to Lymphoma and still struggle with his loss. Before I discovered he was sick Harvey and I had begun training (albeit sporadically) for a 5K. Sadly, Harvey and I never made it to a starting line, but organizing an event like this along with raising much needed funding for canine cancer research seems like the perfect way to honor his memory. Lastly, if you have yet to vote in the Top Dog Reader’s Choice Survey, what are you waiting for?! The deadline is May 1st and I should also remind you that one lucky voter will win an iPod shuffle. So, Bark that Vote! Please enjoy the newest issue of the Animal Print. Happy Spring! Stephanie Georgia editor/publisher

Locally and Around The Globe…

First-Ever Dog Park in a Domestic Violence Shelter

Dogs Align With Earth’s Magnetic Field When Pooping, But Scientists Have No Idea Why Scientists at the University of Life Sciences in Prague have discovered an extraordinary sensing ability in dogs: dogs are sensitive to Earth’s magnetism. Strangely, when dogs squat to poop, they spontaneously align their body axis with respect to the Earth’s magnetic field, researchers have found. However, they do not know yet know why this habit is useful to them or what it means. In a research paper published in the journal Frontiers in Zoology, scientists claim “dogs preferred to excrete with the body being aligned along the North-south axis under calm MF conditions.” However, when magnetic field (MF) conditions were unstable, their directional behavior was absent. If, for example, there was a solar flare, and the Earth’s magnetic field became unstable, dogs would get confused - or at least, would start to poop in random directions.

If you think dogs can’t count, try putting three dog biscuits in your pocket and then give him only two of them.”

Urban Resource Institute (URI) and Nestlé Purina PetCare recently hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate New York City’s first-ever dog park in a domestic violence shelter, called the Purina Play Haven and Dog Park. The event marks the official expansion of URIPALS— People and Animals Living Safely—which launched in June 2013 as a pilot program to enable domestic violence survivors to enter shelters with their cats and other small animals. With the opening of the Purina Play Haven and Dog Park, URI will now be able to open its doors to families with dogs.

Every State In The U.S. Will Soon Punish Animal Cruelty As A Felony South Dakota, the only remaining state in the U.S. without a law to punish serious animal abuse as a felony, finally approved legislation to do just that on Thursday. The measure, Senate Bill 46, was approved in a vote of 54 to 15, and is now headed to the desk of Gov. Dennis Daugaard for a signature or veto. The law, which will make instances of “gross physical abuse” that cause serious injury or death to an animal a Class 6 felony, has been heavily supported by animal welfare organizations. If prosecuted under the law, violators could face up to two years in prison and a $4,000 fine. The Governor is expected to approve the bill soon, at which point every state in the country will have a law to punish animal cruelty as a felony.

mid the quaint cottages, boutiques, and restaurants that line coastal Water St. in Warren, Rhode Island, sits a house that shows it has weathered several storms. Though, very much contrary to its grey, rough exterior, upon entering this unique studio, you’re suddenly immersed in liveliness and color as if you’ve just crossed the border into Mexico on their Day of the Dead. Bright flowers are twined around the wooden beams of the ceiling, shelves, and loft of William Schaff ’s studio, called the Fort, where his artwork covers every inch of (what would be) exposed wood.

Consistent with the Mexican celebratory vibe, a large portion of Will’s artwork displays skeleton-like figures; faceless bodies, leaving the subject ambiguous. But between the skulls, you can find a scattering of beautifully drawn dogs - each hair being captured so clearly, it seems the fur might possibly be soft on paper. When I asked Will about the pet photos, his voice softened as he tells me about his dog Corinna; the personal struggle he was facing when he first got her, and the greater loss he felt when she passed away. Despite immense grief, Will attempted to distract his mind, busying himself with more artwork and other endeavors, such as playing Continued on page 12

drums in What Cheer? Brigade. Although, he couldn’t get Corinna’s devoted, yet fragile image out of his mind. Her face began appearing in the background of his work. Then he found himself incorporating more dogs, like the cd cover of the Austin based band Okkervil River’s I Am Very Far - just one of several bands for which he has created album artwork. Over a short amount of time, people began to notice the detailed representation he was able to capture, and soon he was getting a multitude of requests for pet portraits. I asked Will what he enjoys most about creating animal portraits. His response was a keen indicator of the love he had for Corinna and the new love he found for his current dog, Dinner. “When I do (pet portraits), I’m not looking at the animal. I’m looking for what the owner sees in the animal - which sounds cynical, but I’m really trying to see what they see so I can best represent them… Continued on next page.

13 which is why I like actually meeting the animal, if possible. It’s a bit harder with a picture. How do you show love that’s not encumbered by human understanding of love? Someone approaches me with an idea of something they love in a way they love nothing else.” Over the years, Will has taken several dogs into his home, many saved from the fate of euthanasia. From as little as a couple of days to as long as six months, he has kept them in his care while searching for loving, permanent homes. While he enjoys fostering dogs, he can’t help but feel pained by the fact that it’s even a necessity. “Love is at the top of an animal’s brain all of the time,” he explains. However, it can also be to their detriment. I have seen some in pretty bad shape. I wonder, how can people do that? You have a living being that wants nothing but to love and be loved. All it hopes is that it can share its life with you…we call them pets, but we’re lucky to have them in our lives.” It is customary on Day of the Dead to bring appropriate gifts to burial sites or private altars for the departed, using flowers to attract the souls to the gifts left behind. Families will gather, tell stories, don masks (Will has an abundance) and costumes - skulls heavily represented. Sitting in his studio, I felt like he was inviting the spirits of the dead back to visit him, luring them with the flowers, celebrating them with shrines and pictures of lost souls - like Corinna. While chatting, he shares with me a warm thank you card, sitting atop his desk, from a family who recently received a very much adored portrait.He relishes being able to give his clients, some who come to him with pictures of passed dogs, a piece they can take home and hold closely, making their own shrines and calling back fond memories. With the intricate detail and lifelike resemblance, it’s not a far stretch to feel like they’re close again. Will is perpetually drawing and eager for the chance to explore new subjects. Whether you’re interested in pet portraits, wayward souls, or any whimsical imagery conceived, or if you would just like to visit the Fort and collaborate, he is readily reachable by email. You can also browse through a variety of his work on his website. The opportunity to visit his studio however, may be short-lived, as the Fort is in jeopardy of foreclosure for the third time. Admittedly embarrassed to be reaching out for help (via an indiegogo.com campaign called “Hold down the Fort! Saving Fort Foreclosure”), Will realizes he cannot get out from under without support. “This space allows me to make a level Continued on page 14

of work I could never achieve if I were living out of a car. Hopefully, people who love my work will throw in a few bucks to keep it going.” While the Fort’s future remains uncertain, Will promises that his “open door” policy will still be upheld and, as he has always done, welcomes anyone who is interested in art - in any manner - to come by the studio to create, or just chat with him. {Behavior}

Submissive Urination in Dogs Courtesy of www.vetstreet.com

Wonder what’s going on when a dog tucks his tail, avoids eye contact, and then piddles at your feet? The culprit may be a common behavioral condition called submissive urination. It’s a dog’s way of saying, “Hey, I know you’re the boss of me.” A puppy might outgrow the behavior, but if he doesn’t, there are steps an owner can take to help modify the behavior. These include figuring out what triggers the behavior and then avoiding those triggers, avoiding dominant and aggressive gestures toward the dog, and using positive reinforcement instead of punishment. Overview Dogs may urinate inappropriately in response to a perceived threat, which may be intentional (for example, when an owner scolds a dog) or unintentional (for example, when an owner displays a dominant or aggressive behavior, such as looking directly into the dog’s eyes). Submissive urination is the dog’s way of communicating that he or she is not a threat and is submitting to the person’s dominance. Dogs communicate with each other through body language and vocalization, so it’s natural for them to react to human facial expressions, gestures, and tones of voice in the same way. Human behaviors that may be threatening to dogs include: • Scolding or physical punishment • Direct eye contact • Standing over them

• Loud, harsh, or excited tones • Making loud noises

Sadly, simply your being human is enough of a challenge for some overly sensitive dogs. Signs and Identification A dog that displays this behavior will typically show other submissive signs, such as tucking the tail, looking away, licking the lips, and rolling over on the back. This should be differentiated from other conditions involving inappropriate urination, such as excitement urination. Excitement urination is somewhat different, occurring when a dog is overly excited, usually when the owner or visitors greet the dog. Affected dogs wag their tails and do not display submissive postures. Though submissive urination occurs most commonly in puppies, it can happen with any dog at any age. Affected Breeds There is no breed predisposition for this extremely common condition. Treatment Puppies can outgrow submission urination with a little patience from their owners. If not, veterinarians will first ensure that there’s no medical reason for the behavior and Continued on page 16.

Submissive Urination in Dogs Continued from page 15. only then begin to suggest ways to address the problem. Here are a few steps veterinarians may offer their clients to help alter the behavior. Identify the triggers to this behavior. Find the actions that elicit submissive urination in your dog and alter the circumstances. If your dog urinates when you greet him or her at the end of a workday, ignore your dog for a few minutes as soon as you get home. This will help your dog stay calm when you arrive, and you can greet your dog calmly when he or she approaches you. Avoid punishment. When your dog urinates submissively, do not punish him or her or express frustration. Either ignore the behavior and walk away or calmly take your dog outside and reward him or her for urinating outdoors. Avoid aggressive or dominant gestures. Speak calmly to your dog, avoid direct eye contact, kneel at your dog’s level rather than leaning over from the waist, and pet your dog under the chin rather than on top of the head. It can also help to approach your dog from the side rather than head on. Reward confident behavior. Provide your dog with alternatives to submissive behavior and reward his or her efforts. For example, if your dog normally cowers when you arrive, ask your dog to sit, and then reward him or her with a treat. Keep rewarding good behavior throughout the day to build your dog’s confidence. Prevention The key is to build a dog’s confidence with positive reinforcement and avoid all punishment. Scolding or punishing a submissive dog only worsens the problem by eliciting more submissive behavior.

{Eight Tips on Coping with Pet Loss}

21

by Moira Anderson Allen, M.Ed.

Anyone who considers a pet a beloved friend, companion, or family member knows the intense pain that accompanies the loss of that friend. Following are some tips on coping with that grief, and with the difficult decisions one faces upon the loss of a pet. All that matters, however, is how you feel. Don’t let others dictate your feelings: They are valid, and may be extremely painful. But remember, you are not alone: Thousands of pet owners have gone through the same feelings.

2. What Can I Expect to Feel? Different people experience grief in different ways. Besides your sorrow and loss, you may experience some detrimental emotions. Guilt may occur if you feel responsible for your pet’s death-the “if only I had been more careful” syndrome. It is pointless and often erroneous to burden yourself with guilt for the accident or illness that claimed your pet’s life, and it only makes it more difficult to resolve your grief.Denial makes it difficult to accept that your pet is really gone. It’s hard to imagine that your pet won’t greet you when you come home, or that they don’t need their evening meal. Some pet owners carry this to extremes, and fear their pet is still alive and suffering somewhere. Others find it hard to get a new pet for fear of being “disloyal” to the old. Anger may be directed at the illness that killed your pet, the driver of the speeding car, the veterinarian who “failed” to save their life. Sometimes it is justified, but when carried to extremes, it distracts you from the important task of resolving your grief.

1. A m I crazy to hurt so much? Intense grief over the loss of a pet is normal and natural. Don’t let anyone tell you that it’s silly, crazy, or overly sentimental to grieve! During the years you spent with your pet (even if they were few), they became a significant and constant part of your life. They were a source of comfort and companionship, of unconditional love and acceptance, of fun and joy. So don’t be surprised if you feel devastated by the loss of such a relationship. People who don’t understand the pet/owner bond may not understand your pain.

Human And Dog Brains Both Have Dedicated ‘Voice Areas’

You need me to lie still inside this noisy MRI scanner for 10 minutes? No problem. Just give me some treats. Volunteers pose with the brain scanner at the MR Research Centre in Budapest. Courtesy of Borbala Ferenczy and Eniko Kubinyi

The first study to compare brain function between humans and any nonprimate animal shows that dogs have dedicated voice areas in their brains, just as people do. Dog brains, like those of people, are also sensitive to acoustic cues of emotion, according to a study in the Cell Press journal Current Biology on February 20. The findings suggest that voice areas evolved at least 100 million years ago, the age of the last common ancestor of humans and dogs, the researchers say. It also offers new insight into humans’ unique connection with our best friends in the animal kingdom

and helps to explain the behavioral and neural mechanisms that made this alliance so effective for tens of thousands of years. “Dogs and humans share a similar social environment,” says Attila Andics of MTA-ELTE Comparative Ethology Research Group in Hungary. “Our findings suggest that they also use similar brain mechanisms to process social information. This may support the successfulness of vocal communication between the two species.” Andics and his colleagues trained 11 dogs to lay motionless in an fMRI

brain scanner. That made it possible to run the same neuroimaging experiment on both dog and human participants -- something that had never been done before. They captured both dogs’ and humans’ brain activities while the subjects listened to nearly 200 dog and human sounds, ranging from whining or crying to playful barking or laughing. The images show that dog and human brains include voice areas in similar locations. Not surprisingly, the voice area of dogs responds more strongly to other dogs while that of humans responds more strongly to other humans.

The researchers also noted striking similarities in the ways the dog and human brains process emotionally loaded sounds. In both species, an area near the primary auditory cortex lit up more with happy sounds than unhappy ones. Andics says the researchers were most struck by the common response to emotion across species. There were some differences, too: in dogs, 48% of all sound-sensitive brain regions respond more strongly to sounds other than voices. That’s in contrast to humans, in which only 3% of sound-sensitive brain regions show greater response to nonvocal versus vocal sounds. The study is the first step toward understanding how it is that dogs can be so remarkably good at tuning into the feelings of their human owners.

ADOPT ME!

Sweet Binks Rabbit Rescue – Foster, RI • 401.623.1340 • www.sweetbinks.org

Miss Molly is one of the “Dug-Out Babies” (their mom & dad were dumped in a Warwick baseball dug-out and found by a patrolling policeman). She is really laid back, sweet and playful. She will be 1 year old soon. She may be a good bonding candidate and she would be a great bun for an adult, quiet, laid-back home.

Spencer is a super cute, super social, young bun. He is now neutered, good with his litterbox and ready for his forever home! We estimate Spencer is about 8 months to 1 year old and he is like a puppy! Great first bun and best for homes with mellow kids over 7 years old.

Fuzzbutt was a stray found and brought to a local animal control. He is super sweet, very cute, neutered and good with his litterbox. Great first bun! He requires some grooming maintenance but he is not high maintenance like an angora. We estimate Fuzzbutt is about 9 months old or so. Best in a home with calm kids over 7 years old or an adult home

Mr. Whiskers was found as a stray and brought to a local animal control. He desperately needed to be neutered and he is now neutered but it is taking some time for him to settle down so we suspect he may be an older bun (over 4 years or so). He would be best (for now) as a single bun and maybe in time a bonding candidate.

Defenders of Animals – Weybosset Hill Station • Providence, RI • 401.461.1922

Look at this cutie!! Destiny getting her nose close up! LOL She is spayed and up to date on all shots. Destiny would make a great companion. She is available for adoption. She’s waiting for her fur-ever home! Please call Defenders of Animals at 401-461-1922.

Agnes is a 7 year old sweet, sweet girl who’s owner went into a nursing home 5 years ago and the family put her out in the back yard alone. She was living out there in desperate conditions until a kind neighbor got involved and has convinced the family to give her up. Agnes was an indoor piggy before she lost her owner so she is house trained.

Pearl is a sweet, senior cat who has been with us for more than seven years now. She was brought in with her sister - Cissy - and we’d prefer that they be adopted together. Pearl is a loving cat who likes her peace and quiet, though she does enjoy human attention from time to time.

April is a goof ball. She has puppy antics and has some energy; therefore, she will need regular exercise. She has started attending obedience classes and is doing well, but she will need an adult household as she can be a little rough with her mouth; it seems to be pent up energy so regular exercise and training should do the trick.

Sweet Vernon Rescue of Rhode Island – North Smithfield, RI

Spudz Mackenzie… remember him? We think our Cowgirl is part Bull terrier and Cattle dog. She has brown flecking all over, very light... and the tips of her ears are dotted with brown spots! Cowgirl is a great girl and loves fetch and playing with toys... good with other dogs.

Tramp is a great dog. A note about “good w/ kids”… this means he/she likes them and is generally gentle and has had significant exposure to children over 5. THIS DOES NOT MEAN the dog is bomb-proof, that he/she will not pull or jump or that no further training is necessary.

LM or “Little Man” is approx 11 months old and neutered. If you are an avid hiker, jogger, walker or bicyclist Little Man could keep up with you - he has the stamina of a young race horse! Have a fenced yard or live by a lake and want to try flyball, agility, frisbee or dock diving - he’s your “little man.”

{Ten Tips on Coping with Pet Loss} Continued from page 20 Depression is a natural consequence of grief, but can leave you powerless to cope with your feelings. Extreme depression robs you of motivation and energy, causing you to dwell upon your sorrow.

3. What can I do about my feelings? The most important step you can take is to be honest about your feelings. Don’t deny your pain, or your feelings of anger and guilt. Only by examining and coming to terms with your feelings can you begin to work through them. You have a right to feel pain and grief! Someone you loved has died, and you feel alone and bereaved. You have a right to feel anger and guilt, as well. Acknowledge your feelings first, then ask yourself whether the circumstances actually justify them. Locking away grief doesn’t make it go away. Express it. Cry, scream, pound the floor, talk it out. Do what helps you the most. Don’t try to avoid grief by not thinking about your pet; instead, reminisce about the good times. This will help you understand what your pet’s loss actually means to you. Some find it helpful to express their feelings and memories in poems, stories, or letters to the pet. Other strategies including rearranging your schedule to fill in the times you would have spent with your pet; preparing a memorial such as a photo collage; and talking to others about your loss.

4. Who can I talk to? your family or friends love pets, they’ll If understand what you’re going through. Don’t hide your feelings in a misguided effort to appear strong and calm! Working through your feelings with another person is one of the best ways to put them in perspective and find ways to handle them. Find someone you can talk to about how much the pet meant to you and how much you miss it-someone you feel comfortable

crying and grieving with.If you don’t have family or friends who understand, or if you need more help, ask your veterinarian or humane association to recommend a pet loss counselor or support group. Check with your church or hospital for grief counseling. Remember, your grief is genuine and deserving of support.

5. Should I stay during euthanasia? Many feel this is the ultimate gesture of love and comfort you can offer your pet. Some feel relief and comfort themselves by staying: They were able to see that their pet passed peacefully and without pain, and that it was truly gone. For many, not witnessing the death (and not seeing the body) makes it more difficult to accept that the pet is really gone. However, this can be traumatic, and you must ask yourself honestly whether you will be able to handle it. Uncontrolled emotions and tears-though natural-are likely to upset your pet. Some clinics are more open than others to allowing the owner to stay during euthanasia. Some veterinarians are also willing to euthanize a pet at home. Others have come to an owner’s car to administer the injection. Again, consider what will be least traumatic for you and your pet, and discuss your desires and concerns with your veterinarian.

6. What do I do next? hen a pet dies, you must choose how W to handle its remains. Sometimes, in the midst of grief, it may seem easiest to leave the pet at the clinic. If you prefer a more formal option, several are available. Home burial is a popular choice, if you have sufficient property for it. It is economical and enables you to design your own funeral ceremony at little cost. However, city regulations usually prohibit pet burials, and this is not a good choice for renters or people who move frequently. Cremation

33

is a less expensive option that allows you to handle your pet’s remains in a variety of ways: bury them (even in the city), scatter them in a favorite location, place them in a columbarium, or even keep them with you in a decorative urn (of which a wide variety are available). It’s also wise to make such plans in advance, rather than hurriedly in the midst of grief.

7. Will my other pets grieve? Pets observe every change in a household, and are bound to notice the absence of a companion. Pets often form strong attachments to one another, and the survivor of such a pair may seem to grieve for its companion. Cats grieve for dogs, and dogs for cats. You may need to give your surviving pets a lot of extra attention and love to help them through this period. The love of your surviving pets can be wonderfully healing for your own grief.

8. S hould I get a new pet right away? Generally, the answer is no. One needs time to work through grief and loss before attempting to build a relationship with a new pet. If your emotions are still in turmoil, you may resent a new pet for trying to “take the place” of the old-for what you really want is your old pet back. When you do get a new pet, avoid getting a “lookalike” pet, which makes comparisons all the more likely. Don’t expect your new pet to be “just like” the one you lost, but allow it to develop its own personality. A new pet should be acquired because you are ready to move forward and build a new relationship-rather than looking backward and mourning your loss. When you are ready, select an animal with whom you can build another long, loving relationship-because this is what having a pet is all about!
