Another reason I get excited at this time of year (and no, it’s not the heaps of snow outside my window) is tallying up our Top Dog Readers Choice winners. This year we had a record turnout in voting, with close to 2000 votes cast! Every year it seems that I learn about new, interesting and creative businesses from your entries and this year was no exception. In the 2009 survey I was thrilled to discover a doggie boot camp with Method Fitness and this year in the same category I discovered CHI Fit Club www.chiinteraction.com. They offer a structured fitness program where your dog works with a personal fitness trainer in a resort-style environment. Your dog will use equipment like dog treadmills, will go hiking, walking, and swimming (hmmm, maybe they’ll take humans too). This is such a cool idea, I’ll definitely be checking them out. Another fitness-minded business that ranked in our Top Dog list is The Canine Joint while they cater to dog rehabilitation, they also offer underwater dog treadmill session for any dog! What a unique way to get your dog some exercise... especially for those of us with “mature” dogs. I would also like to thank everyone who voted in this years Top Dog Readers Choice. It’s wonderful to see great local businesses get the recognition and support that they deserve! Your votes are not only helpful to other readers but are truly appreciated by the businesses that you select as top dogs. Thank you! I hope you enjoy our new issue. Keep warm and cuddle those critters! Sincerely, Stephanie Georgia Editor

Children’s Best Friend:

Is Kitty Sick Or Stressed?

Dogs Help Autistic Children Adapt, Study Shows

Unfortunately for cats, they’re just like us: A new study from Ohio State University finds that stress can cause a healthy cat to have the same symptoms as a sick cat. Healthy cats in the study were just as likely as chronically ill cats to vomit frequently, refuse food and relieve themselves outside the litter box if there was a change in their normal routine.

Dogs may not only be man’s best friend, they may also have a special role in the lives of children with special needs. According to a new Université de Montreal study, specifically trained service dogs can help reduce the anxiety and enhance the socialization skills of children with Autism Syndrome Disorders (ASDs). The findings, published in the journal Psychoneuroendocrinology, may be a relatively simple solution to help affected children and their families cope with these challenging disorders. “Our findings showed that the dogs had a clear impact on the children’s stress hormone levels,” says Sonia Lupien, senior researcher and a professor at the Université de Montréal ScienceDaily.

What Will Your Pet Inherit? “Unbiased” has published a study in the UK, revealing that almost 1.5 million Brits plan to leave their inheritance to those caring for their pets. While children top the list, pets come in at number six, ahead of the church, as beneficiaries. New York billionaire Leona Helmsley, wasn’t alone after all when she left $12 million to her white Maltese back in 2007. The study confirms that pets really are dear to our hearts.

According to Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI) these are the 10 Most Common Dog Claims: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

ANIMAL

Hi there -I read with interest your article titled “When Did Dog Walking Stop Going to the Dogs?” in the recent Animal Print Magazine. The article connected with me nicely as I realized that I too am always on “a mission” when I walk my Border Terrier because that is my exercise. I walk briskly barely allowing him time to “smell the roses” and subsequently he never seems to “look forward” to our walks. Your article had a special Zen-like quality to it - being in the moment -- and I will look to change my walks a bit. Nice job! Kind regards, Andrew Eschner, DVM. Gansevoort, NY

Changing Lives With 2 Hands 4 Paws

After reading several articles about “foreclosure pets”, Maureen Gendron felt the need to do something to help families forced to give up their beloved pets. “It’s heartbreaking to hear about the increase in the number of pets being surrendered to shelters because their families had lost their homes. Some were even abandoned in apartments when the families moved. I knew that Rhode Island in particular had a high unemployment rate, so I was sure that this was a dire situation here also. I thought that if these families had a place to bring their pets temporarily while they looked for suitable petfriendly housing, they would not need to give up their pets to shelters. I don’t know of any organization in Rhode Island that addresses this need.” Maureen decided to take this matter into her own hands and start a non-profit whose goal is to help pet families through temporary crisis situations. “By helping pet families stay together when they just need a little short-term assistance, we can help reduce the number of pets being surrendered to shelters.” Maureen approached family members about her idea. “My sister Dee was

interested in getting involved. Our sister Pat and brothers Kevin and Dan also agreed to join the organization. We spent a few months getting our ideas together and finalizing all the details.” After completing a few forms and submitting their application, 2 Hands 4 Paws was founded on July 3, 2009. “I went to work getting our website launched and working on creating brochures and flyers to advertise. Once our organization was founded, our next goal was to obtain 501(c)(3) status, which we completed in March 2010.” “Now that the initial business is setup, the real work begins.” The most difficult part for the newly formed non-profit has been spreading the word about their organization. “Our biggest need, aside from raising funds, is recruiting qualified volunteers, specifically for short-term foster care. The biggest obstacle with accomplishing this goal is the fact that we are still relatively unknown to the general public.” Utilizing multiple social networking venues, such as Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Best Friends Network, LinkedIn, Volunteer Match, and any other sites, the group is working to get the word out. 2 Hands 4 Paws currently has only a handful of volunteers (even fewer who volunteered for foster care) but hopes to gain a volunteer base and perhaps partner with other organizations, such as the Red Cross, to provide foster care of pets for families who are provided temporary housing after a disaster. Keeping with their objective the group also hopes to set up a pet pantry, working in conjunction with local food

Did you know that there are a number of dog friendly bars in Rhode Island? Three that were just voted as Top Dogs are Nick-A-Nees in Providence, Aidans Pub in Bristol and O’Briens Pub in Newport. Be sure both you and your dog are comfortable with getting lots of attention from strangers! Now go take your dog out on that date!

I know, this may sound a little strange, but why not try it? There are plenty of massage therapists in the area and many that focus on dogs. Wet Nose Canine Massage (see ad on opposite page) is one such therapist that will set up an in home couples massage or have you visit their host location for both you and your dog. If you call other pet massage therapists, (check out top dog winners on page 15) we’re sure they would be happy to accommodate you and your pooch as well. Talk about a great date for both of you! LOVE

{Behavior} By Katenna Jones, ScM, Associate CAAB, CABC, CPDT

W

hat better way to show your love than with smiles, hugs or kisses? For humans, hugging is typically an enjoyable, comforting behavior. We hug in times of stress or sadness, as a way to apologize, or to show love, affection, and intimacy. We hug spouses, friends, children, babies, stuffed animals, blankets, even ourselves! Many believe this behavior stems from the comfort and relaxation we felt as nursing or cuddled babies that became associated with chest to chest contact, and we retain that association into adulthood. Dogs, on the other hand, are not primates and it is not natural for them to hug. When canines engage in chest to chest contact, it is typically during rough play or fights, and it only lasts for a few, brief moments. Most humans think their dogs love being hugged, but with a quick scan of the many photographs of dogs being hugged, you will see lots of stressed dogs with wide eyes, averted gazes, lip licking, pulled back mouth

corners, flat ears and body posture leaning away. Now, I’m not saying, don’t hug your dog – I certainly hug mine every day! Dogs can be inadvertently, or purposefully, trained to tolerate hugs or associate them with good things, especially if the hugging starts during puppyhood. And some dogs are just naturally more tolerant of body handling than others. Just keep in mind that from a dog’s perspective, hugging isn’t normal! If your dog tenses up, pulls away, licks their lips, or even growls – don’t take it personally and definitely don’t scold them! They are just telling their crazy primate owner that dogs don’t dig that, so knock it off. This is especially valuable information to instill in children. Kids naturally want to – and are often encouraged to – run up and hug dogs. This is a pretty bad idea that can easily result in a nip. Then there are kisses. We all know what kissing means among humans, and I know more than a few of you kiss your dogs on the mouth. I actually have a tee shirt that says: “Bacio il mio cane sulla

21

bocca!” – which is Italian for “I kiss my dog on the lips.” Kissing dogs is mostly a personal choice about grossness levels, but from a purely behavioral standpoint – it is normal and acceptable! Dogs lick each other on the mouth and face quite commonly (they also lick other areas quite commonly, which is where the grossness factor comes in). Among dogs, face licking is a sign of respect and appeasement and is a way of saying, “You’re the boss!” It’s not so much “I love you” as it is “take care of me.” This all stems from their wolf ancestry, where pups lick the lips and mouths of the adults to stimulate them to regurgitate a yummy snack of partially digested food. Dogs, of course, don’t regurgitate their food for their pups anymore, and they don’t expect you to either, but you get the idea. This appeasing behavior is retained into adulthood, when lower ranking animals lick the faces and mouths of higher ranking animals. You will probably find that more submissive acting dogs will tend to lick more frequently than more confident, higher ranking dogs. Of course, there are other reasons why dogs may lick. They may like the taste of the salt in your sweat. My dog loves licking my face when I’m (ironically) in downward dog, which makes it especially difficult to focus. They may have also inadvertently learned to lick. For example, if your dog used to get excited and bounce around and lick you, say, when he was younger and getting ready to go for a walk – you probably enjoyed, laughed at, and inadvertently rewarded that behavior. Over time, the dog learned that licking gets attention, and may even result in a walk! He doesn’t understand the walk probably would have still happened even without the licking! And that brings us to smiles. The universal expression of happiness, right? Oh, if only it were that simple. Among primates, smiling is a way to say “I’m not a threat to you, please feel free to come closer, I mean no harm.” Then there is the fear grimace (eek!) and the aggressive snarl (rrrr!). These are all tooth baring facial expressions with very different meanings from the smile, but we usually know one when we see one.

LOVE - Doggie Style Continued from page 21

When it comes to dogs, the word “smile” gets even more difficult. Tooth baring in a wide grin is typically considered a threat among dogs; a way of saying, “I am not comfortable with you, back off !” This is often called a snarl or grimace. But a true “smile,” which is not displayed by all dogs and is a lot less common, has a meaning similar to a true human smile. It is a silly facial expression that has no threat at all, but the teeth are still bared. If you have a Dalmatian, you probably have seen this before. So how can you tell the difference between a dog’s threat grimace and a happy smile? It takes practice and time, but in general: “back off ” is usually associated with tense facial muscles, very round eyes, and pulled back mouth corners. Smiles that are showing love and submission are typically associated with soft, relaxed, squinty eyes, ears pulled far back, soft lips, and a soft, wiggly body. Hugs, kisses, and smiles. Three ways of expressing human love and affection, with very different meanings among our canine companions. Two means “threat” and one means “appeasement” - not exactly the sappiest of Hallmark greetings! But with a little knowledge about how our best friends communicate, and a respectful acceptance that dogs are NOT humans in fur coats, we are better able to read and understand our dogs and show them how much we love them. Now, go kiss your dog on the mouth (if he wants you to!).

5 Unique Dates For You

And Your Dog! Continued from page 17

Cook Dinner For Two

When it comes to cooking for one, there is often 5 little motivation to prepare nutritious meals. So why not make a date night once a month and cook for you and our pet! Dogs and cats enjoy many of the same healthy options as you do, so we think this might be fun! A list of “people foods” that are safe and healthy for dogs can be found by doing an internet search, checking with your veterinarian, or in books and magazines. It is important to check the pet safety of foods because there are certain foods such as chocolate, onions, garlic, grapes, and raisins that you should not share with your dog.

Go Shopping!

The Animal Print has just started compiling a list of local stores that welcome your pet. We have a few, but we know there are many more! Why not plan a day around shopping exclusively at places you can take your pet! If you find some great new

29 locations please let us know and we’ll add them to our online list. Have fun and tell them that the Animal Print sent you!

Have A Sleep Over

We love staying at swanky hotels and inns and right in this area there are some beautiful hotels that welcome pets! Some even have room service with great items for your dog. Why not take a break from it all and just hang out with your pup in luxury? A few of our picks are the Hotel Viking in Newport, Westin in Providence, Marriot Providence Downtown, Banisters Warf Guest House in Newport and The Lands End Inn in Provincetown, MA.

Bonus Idea: Why not make it a double

date and bring along your dog’s favorite dog pal and his person! We hope you have a great date with your pet and if you do - let us know at info@theanimalprint.com...we would love to hear about your day!

Darcy is a short-haired dark brown tabby. He is about 8 years old. Darcy tested positive for feline AIDS, so he needs to be housed in a home without other cats or in a home that already has an AIDS positive cat. He is very sweet. He is the definition of a lap cat. All he wants to do is snuggle up on your lap and be loved.

Cisco is a short-haired orange cat. He is between 3-5 years old and is very sweet. He and his brother, Tray, and sister, Sandy, were abandoned and left to fend for themselves in the woods. Thankfully neighbors got together and took care of them until they could call us. If interested, please come in for a visit.

Curly is a spaniel mix. He is about 4 years old. He is very friendly and loves to play. He is a very high energy dog, definitely not a couch potato. He would make a great family dog. He is very trainable with commands. If interested, please stop by for a visit.

Dewey is a 7 year old yellow lab mix. He and his brother, Harry, were surrendered together because their owner became ill and could no longer care for them. Despite their ages, they still play like they are puppies! They can be placed together or separately. If interested, please stop by for a visit!

“Cheeko”

Everything I Learned About Life (and How to Live) I Learned from my Cockatiel – CHEEKO! by Bonnie Frechette • Don’t be shy – go for what you want. • B e inquisitive – explore, try new things. Dare to learn. • E xpress your joy – it brings others joy to see you feel joy. • Dare to be silly – life is more fun! • Love unconditionally. • Sing when you need to sing.

R.I.P. Cheeko – I Love You! Thank You!

• B e strong – those around you feel it and benefit.

• Turn up the volume, go full throttle and live! • Dance – even if you don’t know how! Just live in that moment and set yourself free! • W hen you find what you love, don’t be shy about it. Claim it, love it, be loyal and relish in that joy. • Don’t judge the outside, it’s the beauty within that matters.

• Cheeko also taught me a huge lesson in forgiveness -- that was his parting gift.

“Isabella Barrett” 2000-2010

My dearest Isabella, thank you for the joy you brought to my life. You were a great companion and a wonderful friend for many years. You inspired me to open my shop and to believe in the power of pets and their place in my heart. Without hesitation you always did what I asked of you. Long days at work, to hiding in your carrier under the table at restaurants while I ate dinner and never complained. The last years of your life were spent at moms in the country frolicking in the yard and keeping watch over their home till it was time for you to go. Thank you for the years of love & laughter. You will be deeply missed Love Always, MOM

• Be who you truly are. Put yourself out there and don’t be meek. Live an authentic life.

Cheeko was my best friend and love of my life for eight great years. He was no ordinary bird. He had a spirit that was larger than life. This little guy carried me through some really tough times. He made friends wherever he went, and he was a well traveled bird. He’s been on vacation camping in Acadia National Park, been to the beach in Dennisport and also a cottage in Sandwich. As you can see, he taught me a lot about life and losing him so tragically was yet another gift he gave me as something to process, learn and grow. His legacy will continue and I will forever honor his spirit and celebrate my luck in having him in my life. Thank you Cheeko. Love you - forever!
