Discovering that Block Island won for “Best Dog Friendly Getaway” (and trust me, it really is), and being reminded of the amazing outdoor pet friendly fitness and doggie yoga classes, outdoor restaurants and great upcoming events, you’ll be living in that land of longing too. But, luckily...warmer days really are on there way and even the most devout snow bunny will be feeling that extra kick in their step very soon. Speaking of an extra kick in their step, we are delighted to announce our Cover Contest Winner is “Chesterfield Boots” a Harlequin Dane and Wire-haired Griffon mix. The handsome Chesterfield was by far one of the most lively 18 year old dogs I’ve ever met. In fact, I’ve never met an 18 year old dog and now that I have, I’m amazed at his exuberance. After meeting his dog mom Lalania, I’m convinced that her remarkable care of him over the years has more than contributed to his long life and health. On a more somber note, another dog who has touch hundreds if not thousands of lives has passed away after a battle with Cancer. Marvelous Marvin, who is best known as the mascot of the RISPCA and creator of Marvin’s Fund, lead an amazingly full life. His owner Dr. Finocchio has written a beautiful tribute to Marvin (see page 27) which is both touching and inspiring. Marvin was more than your average dog, he was truly “marvelous”.

ark Twain claimed that in his travels around the world, he had never seen a prospect, a valley view, to rival the majesty and beauty of this spot in Honolulu, and there I was. A red dog--her teats told me she either had, or was about to have, a litter of pups. A squad car tried to catch her: stray mongrels are not welcome in Oahu! Poor thing: she couldn’t quite decide whether to choose the comfort of human company or the safety of her own lair atop this cliff in the chill air. And she knew how to move a few steps out of reach, until her pursuers gave up and took off. Then, another marvelous sight came dramatically into focus (although I had no camera to capture the moment). It was a happy hen! She was surrounded by her brood of chicks, not newborn fledglings but lively and cheeping creatures, “the Lord’s tiny poultry.” Oops, one of the hatchlings seems to have gotten away, causing a flurry of maternal concern. She seems to have sent the siblings on a hunt for the lost soul. They scattered, regrouped, were counted in a bird-census, and the flock-family vanished into the valley, cheerfully, busily, triumphantly, gloriously. I had been reading Jonathan Foer Safran’s diatribe against farm factories, in which the hen is in prison and her young are debeaked, declawed, and confined to a windowless and crowded

penitentiary. Compare their lot in “life” with the magnificent landscape of the 50th state. You may know that Hawaii was a monarchy, and the rulers of the islands were large folk, good-looking and friendly but also fierce in battle. When the last reigning royal, Lily, was forced to abdicate to accomodate mainland American business interests and political lobbyists, she was sentenced to solitary confinement in her own palace! (President Grover Cleveland made an honest effort to liberate her and restore her throne, but the senate would not permit the gesture). Each year millions of abandoned pets enter animal shelters. While these humane agencies try to maintain an ever-increasing population of needy animals, too many healthy, sweet pets are euthanized. The Cat Adoption Team Services (CATS) of East Providence, along with their inspirational kitten mascots, Nhay and San, are attempting to cut the cat overpopulation problem off at the source by educating the community on the importance of spaying and neutering cats. In 2006, Rhode Island passed a law requiring cat owners to spay or neuter their pets, but there are many pet owners who do not abide by this law. Whether the disregard comes from ignorance or fear of high costs, it is resulting in more unwanted litters and homeless cats. Such was the case with Nhay and San, two innocent kittens born into a home where they were not wanted or cared for. Nhay, an outgoing and lovable Siamese kitten, was born with Radial Hyperplasia. This is a mutation where there are almost no bones in the front paws and the paws appear to be attached to the elbow. This mutation was most likely the result of her mother’s age and over breeding. Her brother San was born a healthy and affectionate little boy, but fell victim to abuse and neglect when he was stepped on and left with a broken hind leg, shattered knee, and a broken tail and hip. Even after such a horrific injury he was never taken to a vet. As a result, he can only walk on three of his legs while dragging the now deformed leg along. The first few weeks of Nhay and San’s life were filled with maltreatment and neglect. They were never going to receive the medical attention or even the basic care they required. Their owner left them in such a dire

It was CATS, who stepped in and saved Nhay and San from becoming just another statistics of unwanted and euthanized animals. The board members of CATS were so impressed by Nhay and San’s perseverance and inspiring ability to survive, even with their disabilities, that they knew this unique pair were the perfect poster kittens for CATS spay and neuter cause. CATS hopes that Nhay and San’s story will help educate the community on the importance of spaying and neutering cats and other household pets, so that no animal will have to endure the suffering they experienced. As spring approaches, both kids and dogs will be spending more and more time outdoors. While this can be a fun and exciting time of year, the likelihood of dog bites is much greater. It is important to make sure that both kids and dogs are safe, to ensure that spring is fun for everyone.

What Can Parents Do? Educate Your Children

Studies have found that the number one dog-bite prevention measure is education. Children who understand how to act around dogs, how to play with dogs, when to leave dogs alone and how to properly meet a dog are much less likely to be bitten. To address this need, American Humane has created American Humane KIDS: Kids Interacting with Dogs Safely™ http://www.americanhumane.org/human-animal-bond/programs/ humane-education/kids-education-project.html, a dog-bite prevention program specifically for children ages 4 to 7.

Supervise Your Children Unsupervised children may innocently wander too close to a dangerous situation. Eighty-eight percent of fatal dog attacks among 2-year-olds occurred when the child was left unsupervised. Supervision of children, especially around dogs, is one way to help ensure they are safe.

What Can Dog Owners Do? Spay Or Neuter Your Dog

Neutering reduces aggression, especially in males. Un-neutered dogs are more than 2.6 times more likely to bite than neutered dogs. Female dogs in heat and nursing moms are much more dangerous than spayed females, and their behavior can be unpredictable. Talk to your veterinarian to schedule an appointment, or contact your local humane organization or animal shelter for information on low-cost spay/neuter assistance.

Marvin was twice homeless, lonely and unwanted; once because his first owners no longer had time for him and his second family, I use the word family loosely here, no longer wanted him because of his limp. He lived in cage 15 at the RISCA, a cinder block kennel for months waiting for his second chance for doing nothing wrong until our eyes met one morning. I knew at that moment by the look, he was going to become my dog forever. Had I not adopted Marvin he may never have had a second chance having been rejected twice in his life and burdened with a disability? Little did I know what would lie ahead for the both of us? My only thoughts at the time were that he would be a good family dog and companion for both my wife and me. My wife had been attacked by a large dog as a child and naturally had a hidden fear of dogs. At first my wife was hesitant for good reason not to have a 94 pound big black strange dog live with us. With my son Tim’s persistence, we decided to give it a shot and on Thanksgiving Day, 2002 Marvin came home for dinner as our 15th invited guest and has never left. In most scenarios, taking a strange dog home to a household of strange people on a festive holiday is not the most sensible thing to do. In Marvin’s case it was the only thing to do. I learned that Thanksgiving Day, he was a very special dog. What he accomplished in the seven years we shared together is astonishing. Marvin had a private meeting with the Gov. of our state, met two sitting mayors, Cicilline and Laffey and was an invited guest to Presidential Candidate Hilary Clinton’s fundraiser here in Rhode Island. At the event Marvin ‘paw’sented one of his paintings to Mrs. Clinton. He was the Nations Top Therapy Dog in 2009, acknowledged by the state legislature for his benevolent service to those less fortunate and has received dozens of awards for his community service. He was featured in Women’s World Magazine, The National Inquirer, featured in two books, “To The Rescue”, written by Elise Lufkin and “Angel Dogs With a Mission”, written by Allen & Linda Anderson and appeared on the cover of The Animal Print Magazine. Marvin appeared on many TV and radio programs and was a special guest at Paul Newman’s Hole in the Wall Camp in Connecticut. Marvin had many personal requests to visit sick people at their homes or in

the hospital and fulfilled every request. He had several children with special needs visit him weekly at the RISPCA who took him for walks, rubbed his belly or who were entertained by the 15 tricks he would perform for them. You would often find him hiding under the huge circular table in the auditorium as the children prepared treats for the pets at the shelter hoping for a few to reach him which they often did with a little help from his friends. These made for good stories but what he did behind the camera and newsprint was the things that he enjoyed the most and who he truly was. In seven years he visited over 110 different schools, hospitals, nursing homes, day care centers, libraries, summer camps and after school programs hoping to put a smile on a forgotten face in a nursing home, hope in the eyes of an inner city child or inspire a sick child at Hasbro Children’s Hospital to never give up the fight. His Stranger Is Danger Program taught children to be aware of strangers. He helped over 1,500 elderly and disabled pet owners keep their pets through the Marvin Fund, www. marvinfund.org that was created in 2003. Had it not been for Marvin, many of these unfortunate people would not have been able to keep their pets. His fund helped save hundreds of shelter pets just like him get a second chance that otherwise would never have had a chance. Marvin raised over $165,000.00 from the proceeds of his book “Marvelous Marvin” and the paintings he created, MarvArt, with his marvelous tail that never ceased to stop wagging even at the very end. One of Marvin dear friends, Maxwell Mays, Rhode Island’s consummate artist personally invited Marvin to be part of an art exhibit entitled Fins, Feathers and Fur, a first for a dog. The prestigious Rhode Island Water Color Society made Marvin an honorary member, the first dog ever to receive that distinction. Marvin’s works were displayed every fall at

the Scituate Art Festival where he ‘paw’sonally greeted many of his friends with his tail brush. During our six years as Delta Society Pet Partners, Marvin brought me to the other side of the tracks and introduced me to the world of loneliness, sickness, disability, hopelessness and deprivation. He taught me that doing the little things meant the most to those who had the least. To the world he was just someone, a shelter dog, but to the many unfortunate people he helped in some special way when no one else would he was the world to them. He taught me that people complicate their lives and fail to cherish how fortunate they are at day’s end. I never once forgot about how fortunate I was once Marvin entered my life. I also realized that my once hoped to be family dog had a much larger family and that I would have to share him and that he was no longer belonged just to us. They say time heals all things but I doubt it will heal it completely. There are so many people to thank who were a part of his life. The doctors who took care of him, the thousands of children he became friends with, his close family at the RISPCA, especially Lisa, Jeff, Kayla, Megan, Mona, Bill, Emma, the RISPCA staff, the thousands of donors who made the Marvin Fund possible and the throngs of visitors who came to the shelter to meet him. Often times when I was out in public with him, they knew Marvin but hardly anyone knew me. Marvin was diagnosed with cancer in March of 2009 and was successfully operated on. Unfortunately the growth was malignant and over the course of 10 months invaded his liver and lungs. We were told in November after an ultrasound examination that we would only have him for 3-6 months. As the month of December passed it was evident he was slowing down. On his last day of work at the shelter, I noticed he had minor difficulty getting into my car when we left to go home. He came to work with me for seven years and made the ride to and from work enjoyable. It was quality time spend even though he fell asleep with his head on my lap when he sat in the front seat with me. On the night I brought Marvin to the middle of Rainbow Bridge and before I helped him over to the other side, I caught his last breath in my hand and it took mine away and as I felt the last beat of his heart it broke mine. I have memories for a life

Brooklyn is a 10 month old Pitbull with beautiful blue eyes. Like most young pit bulls, Brooklyn has a lot of energy and will need help learning not to jump up and use his mouth when playing. Because of his exuberance, Brooklyn should not go home with kids under 12 as he could accidentally knock them over.

Keyno is a 1 year old Shar-pei/Pitbull mix Charlie is a 5 year old orange tabby cat who who was brought to us because his owners was brought in because his new owners could no longer afford to keep him. He is a discovered they were allergic to him. As you sweet boy, who has lived with older children, can see, Charlie has a talent for squeezing cats and a smaller dog. He is very playful, himself into very small spaces, but he’s actuand would probably do best in a dog expe- ally a pretty big boy! He is a sweetheart who rienced home. loves to be petted. Sandi was in a shelter for a long time before coming to Sweet Binks and she is quite chunky! She is slimming down and getting exercise and looking good! Sandi is estimated to be about 2 or 3 years old, spayed and she may make a good bonding candidate. She is sweet and playful and loves her freedom!

Fin was found when he hopped up to folks (Sweet Binks adopters) that were fishing! He knew who to go to! Fin is a young, neutered bun and he is good with his litter box. He would best be placed with an adult family or home with older kids. We estimate he is probably 8 months old or so (probably an Easter bunny). He is active and friendly.

Chuckles is a sweet, little bun. He was picked up as a stray and we think he spent a lot of time in a cage. It took him weeks before he would venture out and explore. Now he loves his playtime! We estimate Chuckles is about 3 or 4 years old and he is neutered. He would be a good bonding candidate or a good bun for a laid back home.

Rudy is a love! He is about 3 years old, sweet, good with his litter box and he would be a very good bonding candidate. Rudy would also be good as a first bun in an adult home or home with an older child. Rudy is neutered and very healthy (great hay eater)!

Ziggy is a handsome 4 year old Beagle. He is very sweet, loves to play ball, and go for walks. Ziggy has never chewed his bed, blankets, or toys. He is one of the cleanest dogs here at the Shelter and never goes to the bathroom in his kennel.

Johnny Depp is a wonderful, big, gray and white DLH cat with amber eyes. He is about three to four years old. Johnny is lovable and charming! He enjoys being petted, and loves playing with people. He was found as a stray and has since been neutered.

Minka is a small tiger DSH with lovely green eyes and a quiet personality. She was an “owner turn-in” with the male cat Quasi. Minka is a about 8 months old and loves to cuddle in her bed for naps then play with her fur mouse when she gets up. Her white feet and bushy tail make her a special girl.

Chelsea, a domestic longhair tiger-patterned cat with a lovely face, is a new Mom. She gave birth to four babies a little over two weeks ago so she will not be available for adoption for at least six weeks until the kittens are weaned and she is spayed. Chelsea, is about 2 years old and is a good little Mom.
