W

hile I sit, writing from the warmth of my bed in the wee hours of the morning, the only sound I can hear is the furnace running and the quiet breath of the two fur covered heartbeats beside me. The two have trapped me inside the blankets like a cocoon with arms, with just barely enough room to type. This is a typical morning and also one of my favorite parts of the day. I may spend a fair amount of time being woken up by a dog on my head, a paw in my face or used as some kind of human pillow, but it’s mornings like these that make me love sharing my life with dogs. What I’m also reminded of is how lucky I am to wake up at 4 a.m. to write a letter about it as part of my job as the editor of this magazine.

While I’m cuddling in bed (aka cocooning) with the pups, I’m also putting the finishing touches on one of my other favorites things and that is the Top Dog Readers’ Choice issue. After months of asking readers to bark the vote and lots of sneak peaks at early results, the Top Dog Readers’ Choice winners have been chosen and now you can see them for yourself in this issue! Thank you on behalf of the local businesses who you took the time to acknowlege and to everyone who cast their vote. This contest, along with the magazine, would not exist without your support and I truly appreciate it. Also inside this issue on page 8, you will find a feature about Project Unleashed, a photography service recently launched and created by myself and fellow photographer Jim Phillips. We are both excited to provide free photo sessions to families or individuals who are preparing to say goodbye to their terminally ill pet. We hope you don’t need us but if you have or know someone with a pet nearing the end of his or her life, please contact us through our website www.projectunleashedri.com I hope you enjoy our Top Dog issue and have a wonderful and safe holiday and new year! Thank you, Stephanie Georgia editor

Every U.S. Military Dog Will Be Brought Home, Thanks To New Law

Man Mistakes Two Bear Cubs for Puppies, Raises Them for Two Years Before Finding Out the Truth Wang Kaiyu is experiencing a bizarre case of mistaken identity. The animal lover from China’s Yunnan province recently discovered the two large dogs he had been raising for the past two years are actually Asian black bears, reports Yahoo! U.K. Kaiyu bought the pair of “puppies” as cubs in Vietnam from a vendor who said the animals would grow into lively, friendly dogs with big appetites. The babies certainly grew to be larger, livelier and hungrier, though they also started exhibiting considerably stranger behaviors. Kaiyu realized the harsh and hairy truth when he saw a wildlife protection promotion regarding Asian black bears, two years after buying the animals. In an effort to ensure the animals receive the best care, the dogs-turned-bears were moved to the Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre of Yunnan. Staff at the center say the boy and girl pair arrived in good health and are adjusting well to their new living situation.

The heroic pups who courageously serve and paw-tect our country are finally getting the recognition they deserve. President Barack Obama recently signed a bill into law that guarantees the safe return of all retired military dogs to the United States after serving abroad. In the past, some of these animals were left to retire overseas because they were no longer considered service dogs, and were therefore ineligible for military-funded transportation home, The Washington Times reported. “[The bill] will ensure that our four-legged veterans will finally have their chance to come home and live a comfortable, quiet life, hopefully with a handler they deployed with or a fellow veteran,” retired Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Jeff DeYoung, who was reunited with his war dog, Cena, said in a press release.

Project Unleashed: The Immortalization of Love By Joelle Brohen

A

nyone who has ever loved a non-human being with the entirety of their heart and soul, knows all too well the tremendous grief and unbearable loss we suffer when our life with them comes to an end. Our companion animals imbue our lives with such layered richness and depths of beauty, and the loss of such profound love, leaves us with an indescribable grief and loss. This heartache and pain is something very familiar to photographer Stephanie Georgia, who lost the love of her life— her beautiful, gentle and wonderfully silly shepherd mix Harvey— to cancer three years ago. Stephanie says that in the months and weeks leading up to his death, she became “almost obsessed” with documenting every aspect of his life and every part of his body: his whiskers, nose, paws, and eyelids; his napping, running, playing, and leaping into the air to catch a ball. She explains that while she was taking these photos, she had no idea the solace she would come to find after his passing in these captured moments and details. Stephanie has had a close relationship with local pet owners for years; a relationship cultivated and fostered through the ink and paper of this magazine. However, she had been looking for a way to connect with and help animal caregivers on a more intimate level, using a vehicle which could marry her love of photography with her love of people and animals.

The last photo taken of Harvey. He passed away the following day. Photo by Stephanie Georgia

As she poured over her hundreds of photographs of Harvey, and realized she had scarce few of the two of them together, Stephanie had an epiphany. As a photographer deeply in love with photographing her own dog, it never occurred to her to ask another photographer to photograph the two of them. Yet after experiencing the powerful solace that images of a loved one can bring, she says she wishes she had— and the idea for Project Unleashed was born. Project Unleashed is a venture Stephanie founded with fellow photographer and friend Jim Phillips.

Jim was also pulled toward this project for moving and deeply personal reasons. Jim explains that his father – an avid photographer who passed away in 2003 — introduced him to the world of photography when he was a child. He further explains that as his father was always behind the lens, he has only a precious few photographs of him and even less of the two of them together. He also suffered the tragedy of losing a very close friend when they were just teenagers, and he has not one photograph of him with his lost friend. The absence of these mementos is significant in Jim’s life, and he also shared how deeply moved he was by the comfort Stephanie found in her photographs of Harvey. These experiences have instilled in him a deep desire to give others that which is missing in his own world— visual memories of his loved ones. He says, “It may seem like a simple or insignificant thing to some, but it can make all the difference to have something to hold, to look at, to remember a small piece of that life.” Through this collaborative effort, Stephanie and Jim hope to offer people anguishing over the impending loss of their pet the chance to have a beautiful, professional portrait which will forever capture the unique and nuanced love between them. They are aware that for many people caring for dog who is elderly or experiencing health difficulties, there may be little time or funds to dedicate to this kind of Continued on page 10.

Board • Daycare • Grooming

I recently lost the most beautiful being I have ever had the privilege of knowing— my Freddy, who spent many hours running alongside Stephanie’s Harvey, the two of them lost together in that magical, wild world of dogs into which we may only glimpse. Freddy was my everything, and his being and his love changed my life profoundly. I can fully attest to the power of photography in helping to lessen that unfathomable loss. My favorite photograph of him was taken by Stephanie, weeks before his death. Stephanie’s lens brought forth a dog of such honor and grace; a beautiful, radiant being at peace with becoming a part of all that there is. My comfort in holding that photograph and gazing at him in that moment, for as long as I wish, is immeasurable. Currently, Stephanie and Jim are in the process of finalizing Project Unleashed’s website, www.projectunleashedri.com, and while they have limited availability they would like to offer their services for a few days during the holiday season. They plan to use donations to help defer the cost of expenses related to equipment, website, marketing, travel and are actively looking for a volunteer attorney interested in establishing Project Unleashed as a legal non-profit. Holiday Foods for Pets

23

With the holiday season comes parties, family gatherings and plenty of opportunities to indulge in delicious holiday fare. And since it is the season of giving, it’s hard not to be tempted to share your leftovers with your cat or dog. Although your pet doesn’t need the extra calories, there are some human foods that are safe to give your animal in moderation and some that you should never feed him.

By Laura Cross www.vetstreet.com

Mashed Potatoes

It’s usually ok to give your animal a small portion of mashed potatoes as long as it doesn’t contain any butter, garlic, cheese, sour cream, bacon drippings or other rich toppings. Better to save all those yummy fixings for yourself (and your guests).

Carrots

Though your delectable glazed carrots are not a good choice for cats and dogs, cooked carrots without any added sugar or salt are safe to give animals. It’s usually safe to give dogs raw carrots, but they can be a chocking hazard for cats.

Gravy

It may be a delicious sauce for your turkey and mashed potatoes, but most gravies are too rich for your dog or cat. Instead, you can pour a little lowsodium chicken broth over your pet’s food.

Green Beans

The classic holiday casserole topped with crispy fried onions contains too many rich and risky ingredients for pets, but cooked gren beans can be a safe, low -calorie treat for both dogs and cats. Raw green beans can also be eaten by dogs but are a chocking hazard for cats and should be avoided.

Turkey

It’s hard to ignore a pet begging under the table for a morsel of turkey. Luckily for your dog or cat, you can give him a little bit of this holiday staple as long as you remove the skin (too rich and fattening), and no bones as cooked bones can splinter and cause digestive tract issues.

Unbaked Bread Dough

It seems harmless, but unbaked bread dough can cause all sorts of trouble for your pet. If ingested, it can expand in the stomach. If the stomach twists cutting off the blood supply, emergency surgery can be required. Plus, the yeast in the dough can produce alcohol, which can lead to seizures and respiratory failure.

Sugar-Free Candy and Baked Good

Zylitol is an artificial sweetener often found in sugar-free gum, candy and mints. if ingested, it causes a sudden release of insulin in a dog’s body, leading to dangerously low blood sugar. It can also cause liver damage. Signs of poisoning, such as vomiting and diarrhea can occure in less than 15 minutes after ingestion. If left untreated, the condition can be fatal.

Macadamia Nuts

Whether they’re in a bowl, cookie or covered in chocolate, macadamia nuts should never be given to pets. Signs of poisoning include depression, weakness, vomiting, tremors, lack of coordination and joint stiffness. If you think your pet may have ingested a potentially poisonous substance, please call your vet or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center is a great resource for any animal poison-related emergency, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. 1.888.426-4435.

Traer Scott’s New Book “Finding Home” is Home Grown

Images from “Finding Home: Shelter Dogs and Their Stories” by Traer Scott, published by Princeton Architectural Press 2015.

I

n 2006, Providence based photographer Traer Scott released Shelter Dogs, a book featuring fifty black and white portraits of dogs taken while they were living in shelters. It was her first book and almost all of the dogs were from Rhode Island shelters. Thanks to sweeping national print and television coverage Shelter Dogs became a runaway success before it was even officially out in stores. The book went on to sell over 50,000 copies worldwide and be translated into Japanese. It launched Scott’s career and in the years that have followed, she has put out five other books, all focused on animals. Now, almost ten years after the seminal Shelter Dogs, Scott has created a much-anticipated follow up, Finding Home: Shelter Dogs and Their Stories from Princeton Architectural Press. “I wanted to make a companion book to Shelter Dogs, something similar in style but with an updated message and more in-depth content” says Scott. Fans of Shelter Dogs will recognize the same signature black and white portrait style, but this time, Scott takes us a little deeper into the animal’s lives with five “feature stories” that follow various dogs from shelter to forever home, chronicling their sometimes bumpy transitions. “They are all archetypal in one way or another,” says Scott of the dogs she decided to feature, “they represent various categories of dogs that shelters find particularly hard to place. They all have remarkable stories and I wanted people to hear them.” One such dog, Bingley, a deaf pit bull from the Providence Animal Rescue, was a prime example of a soul that it truly took a village to save. After losing his hearing during a drug bust (most likely due to auditory trauma from close range gunshots) Bingley was taken to a local municipal shelter. No one there realized he was deaf- he just seemed aloof and stubborn, but soon he was transferred to

Providence Animal Rescue League, where his disability was recognized and he soon became a shelter favorite. “The staff and volunteers worked so hard to save this dog, they were utterly devoted to him.” Scott says. “They taught him hand signals, socialized him, basically helped him relearn life as a deaf dog. It wasn’t easy.” Being deaf wasn’t the only strike against Bingley. As a large, beefy, pit bull type dog, people were often frightened of him. It took many months to find the “right” home for this drooling, lovable lug, but unfortunately, six months later, Bingley ended up back at the shelter. “He was depressed and the staff was devastated”, Scott said of his return. “The family really did not have a choice, so it wasn’t about animosity towards them, more just concern for the dog’s emotional well being after having been through so much.” But once again, extra attention from staff and volunteers brought Bingley around. A pair of volunteers, Catherine and Justin, had been particularly devoted to Bingley the first time he was at the shelter but their current apartment did not allow dogs. When he was returned to Providence Animal Rescue League, they decided that this time it was fate. The couple raced to find a dog-friendly apartment, moved and then officially adopted Bingley. All of the dogs featured in Finding Home are from Rhode Island shelters. Scott worked exclusively with Handsome Dan’s Rescue, Providence Animal Rescue League and North Kingstown Animal Control in making the book. “Making this book was so much easier than Shelter Dogs because I had amazing help,” she says. “This time I had a little team of people helping me shoot and keeping track of dog’s histories for me. It made all the difference. I was able to come in more as a documentarian as opposed to someone who was in the thick of it.”

One of the other unique things about Finding Home is the text section called “Reflections on Animal Rescue”. Here the reader will find a collection of short essays from the “little team” Scott refers to. Heather Gutshall (HDR), Bethany Nassef (PARL), Trisha Torres (HDR) and Holly Duffany (NKAC) all wrote about their experiences in the world of animal rescue. “These four ladies have particularly interesting viewpoints because of the different roles they occupy. Holly is an ACO, Trisha is a volunteer and board member, Heather is the founder of Handsome Dan’s and Beth is a full time dog program coordinator. So they all have different responsibilities and experiences within the same system.” Finding Home: Shelter Dogs and Their Stories is an elegant and moving collection of portraits and vignettes which will leave dog lovers even more in love with their indomitable canine companions, but the author hopes that it does more than just confirm our love of dogs. “I hope that the book inspires people to act. Whether that action is choosing to adopt or foster or volunteer or maybe even just to start a dialogue with someone about the plight of homeless animals, increased awareness eventually leads to some kind of action, so that’s my goal.” Continued on page 28.

The Champions - Film Premiere Thursday January 14 | 6:00pm

27

All odds were stacked against the pit bulls rescued from NFL star quarterback Michael Vick’s notorious dogfighting ring. Forced to fight for their lives, they were considered so dangerous both PETA and the Humane Society of the United States wanted them euthanized. But no one could have predicted how the dogs would change the lives of those who risked everything to save them. The Champions is a wonderful documentary making it’s Rhode Island debute in January in partnership with Potter League For Animals, Handsome Dan’s Rescue and Best Friends Animal Society. It is a story of second-chances, redemption and hope. This uplifting documentary takes us on a journey about much more than just dogs—about prejudice, being misunderstood, the power of resilience, and the significance of the relationship we as humans have with animals. Governor Raimondo Signs Legislation to Give RISPCA Custody of Dogs Seized from Dog Fighting Operations

Photo courtesy of Handsome Dan’s Rescue

With the stroke of a pen, Governor Gina M. Raimondo has given animals seized from dog fighting operations a chance at a normal life, signing legislation that does away with the automatic “vicious” designation for dog fight bust survivors. The legislation, SB 347, which was sponsored in the Senate (2015-S 0347) by Sen. William A. Walaska, Frank A. Ciccone, III, and Michael J. McCaffrey and in the House (2015-H 5585) by Rep. K. Joseph Shekarchi, removes language regarding victims of dog fighting from Rhode Island’s vicious dog law. The new law requires that these dogs be assessed to determine if they are suitable for adoption or rescue, giving the Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals custody of seized animals. “I strongly advocated for this legislation from both a personal and professional perspective: as a certified dog behavior consultant and trainer, and as the adopter of two dogs rescued from some of

the most infamous dog fighting busts in United States history,” said Heather Gutshall, ACDBC, CPDT-KA, cofounder of Handsome Dan’s Rescue. “As I see firsthand every day – not just with my own dogs, who are cherished and loyal members of my family, but also with the countless dogs I have assessed and worked with – victims of dog fighting deserve the same chance at a new life as any other dog.” “Nationally, Best Friends Animal Society has led efforts to remove the automatic designation of dogs seized from fighting busts as ‘dangerous,’ and we are extremely proud that this important legislation has gained passage in Rhode Island,” said Lee Greenwood, Legislative Attorney for Best Friends Animal Society. “This law ensures that dogs rescued from fighting busts will not be re-victimized with the stigma of being automatically labeled ‘vicious,’

but will be given a chance to be evaluated as individuals.” Nationally, twelve states still discriminate against survivors of dog fighting by requiring them to be killed or automatically deemed “vicious” or “dangerous,” regardless of age or temperament. These arbitrary laws pertain to puppies found on the property too.

ADOPT ME!

Providence Animal Control 200 Terminal Rd, Providence RI

Otis is a stunningly handsome young male cat. He has an awesome flame point color on him. and amazing blue eyes. To go along with how handsome he is - he also has the best personality. He is so laid back and happy to just sit on the cat tree and look out the window or snuggle up on your lap for some cuddle time.

Sasha is a very sweet adult girl looking for a home. She has a a wonderful multi-colored patch over one eye that gives her a quirky and fun look. She is very outgoing and loves to be picked up and carried around. As soon as you pick her up she will start to purr.

Mama Duke is a Cane Corso mix and is stunningly beautiful. She’s a little timid at first. She was found on RT 10 in the brush shaking with fear. As you can see, Mama Duke has had a rough life up until this point so she is looking for a home that will have time and patience with her to let her know she is safe.

Kerbie is a pit bull mix with big soft eyes and badly cropped ears and a tail that never stops wagging. He is under weight and his coat is a bit dull probably from lack of steady and good meals. In the personality department, Kerbie shines very bright. He loves to play and will carry toys around in his mouth.

East Greenwich Animal Protection League • www.egapl.com

Why hello there, I’m Sadie Mae! I got my name because I’m a true Southern beauty. I’m a gentle black lab mix and I’m about two years-old. I came to EGAPL after being rescued from a high-kill shelter. I was pregnant and I was so relieved to have my babies in a safe foster home!

Hello, I’m Roxie! I’m a light gray tiger girl with bright, beautiful green eyes and I’m about six years-old. I rub on admirers until they pet me! I am nervous about being picked up, so it would be best for me to be in a quiet home with no small children or energetic pets.

I’m Ginger, nice to meet you! I’m a beautiful red Rhodesian Ridgeback mix. I’m about two years-old, and after my previous life of being abandoned on the streets down South, I’m shy and can be very afraid of men. These nice volunteers say that I’m a sweetheart, and after I get comfortable with you, I am a very loving girl!

I’m Suzie, nice to meet you! I hope you won’t judge me for my rough appearance. I’m a senior girl about ten years-old or possibly older, and I’ve spent most of my life living with a woman who couldn’t afford a home, so she kept me in her van. Normally I have long fur and I’m a gray tiger girl.

West Warwick Animal Center • www.westwarwickangels.org

Beautiful 3 year old Cashmere. Her name says it all... an elegant lady. Cashmere is as sweet as they come. So passive and lovable, she loves her lap time with our dedicated volunteer and waits patiently for it! Such an easy going girl we feel she will even enjoy having a fur sibling or 2.

Hi I’m Troy! At 4 years old we can compare him to your typical teenager it seems! Will work for food! Well, only if he has to, (just like a teenager!), as he would much rather use his cuteness! Unlike a teenager, cute in their own way now, he is still the cute you cannot resist! Troy is such a happy go lucky guy that he will fit right into the mix.

Meet Candy! Such a sweet, (pun intended) little lady. Very laid back and reserved, Candy is a thinker. At 4 years old she has figured things out. Just like that confident friend we all turn to that will tell us how it is, Candy won’t let you down.

My Stella, what big ears you have!! My Stella, what big teeth you have! Better to show you my big cheese for the camera with my dear! And my, my, my, Stella... that nose!!! If your happy ending is a super sniffer then Stella is the one for you!! A staff favorite with that nose as she amazes us more each day with what she can sniff out!

Buddy is a loyal dog and will quickly become your devoted best friend. Buddy enjoys going for walks. He is very intelligent and enjoys solving puzzles. Buddy is a mixed lab, about 6 years old. He is also microchipped, neutered and up-to-date on all of his vaccines.

Copper is an all dark and handsome boy seeks soulmate for the holidays! I’m single and ready to mingle! My name is “Copper Go Fetch” but you can call me Copper. I’m a pretty good catch if I do say so myself. Speaking of catch wait till you see me in action with a ball, I’m an all star! Show me some food and I will show you how it’s done!

Bristol Animal Shelter • www.friendsofthebristolanimalshelter.org

Flower, pretty as a Flower. This black cat is a very sweet, but a little shy, but who would blame her, the first part of her life she always had to struggle to find food and shelter. This past winter was the worst, but she is a survivor. Spring arrived, Flower knew that it was her chance to be rescued.

Iggy is handsome three year old male Tuxedo cat, is all dressed up and ready to go. Iggy is very playful and loves to talk. Put some catnip down on the ground and he is ready for a party. He is a very friendly cat and would love to be your special pet. Iggy knows he is special because he is Aids positive, but that doesn’t stop him.

Cafe Latte, pumpkin spice latte, whatever latte you prefer… I’m sure I’ll be your favorite! I am a beautiful 2 year old dilute torti with one-of-a-kind orange and grey markings. I am a smaller, petite girl who was found this winter living among a feral cat colony. I was never a feral girl though, I was just hungry!

Kahula can be the added sweetness that you have been looking for. She is a quite a silly little girl, she needs someone that will show her the love and trust she deserves. Sometimes you can see her hanging from the perch looking at life go by upside down. Her furry gray mouse is one of her favorite toys.

Westerly Animal Control 33 Larry Hirsch Lane, Westerly, RI

Franklin is a sweet, good natured boy , gets along with other dogs. He is nervous and high strong and would require plenty of activity. Loves his walks! He startles easily but with care and patience would make someone a good companion!!

Salty is a very sweet boy and would love to come home with you! He’s a handsome boy and is looking forward to meeting his future family!

Ninja is a handsome 6 year old domestic long haired mix. He arrived at the shelter completely matted on his rear end. We could be angry about how his owner surrendered him, but we’re moving on to bigger things!! Ninja had a visit with the hairdresser and now he’s going with the Bald is Beautiful look on his hind.

Meet Pancake! He’s a approximately 2.7 years old. He came to the shelter as a very frightened, tiny, feral kitten in late 2012. He arrived with 3 other kittens, 2 which have been adopted. Pancake lives peacefully in the cat sanctuary with up to 8 cats at a time. There are many cat trees and access to an outside, enclosed space.

(Worship of the Dogs)

There is an entire day during a festival in Nepal dedicated solely to thanking dogs for their loyalty and friendship. The time itself is called “Diwali”

celebrated by Hindus, and is a ‘festival of lights’ celebrated by millions every year in the fall, in India, Nepal and elsewhere. Specific to Nepal, during the second day, this celebration is dedicated to all the dogs, called Kukur Tihar, specifically to thank our fourlegged companions for always being our loyal friends. People offer garlands, tika (a mark worn on the forehead), and delicious food to dogs, and acknowledge the cherished relationship between humans and dogs. The garlands are a sign of respect for the animals and are presented to both stray dogs and those with homes.

{In Memory} When she was rescued from the second-largest dogfighting bust in United States history, Tillie greeted her liberators with a wagging tail. That sums up her attitude about life: despite surviving horrific conditions, Tillie lived every day with unbridled enthusiasm and joy. After the way she had been treated, humans probably didn’t deserve a second chance from Tillie, but she forgave so easily. She treated every single day like it was her best day ever - and after being cut from her chains, every single day for Tillie WAS a great day. Although the first years of her life were difficult, Tillie more than made up for it, accomplishing so much in her year and eight months of freedom. Joining the folks at Handsome Dan’s Rescue, Tillie became an ambassador for her breed

Tillie R.I.P

and for dogfighting survivors. She worked outreach like nobody’s business, she changed laws, and, just as importantly, she changed minds. Tillie showed people that a dog is not the sum of its past, that redemption is possible, and most importantly, how to love.
