{Letter From The Editor}

I

t’s once again time to reveal this years TOP DOG winners as decided by you. I am incredibly excited to see so many readers take the time to vote for and support their favorite businesses. This year was a particularly tight race in a number of categories and I’m thrilled to see many of my personal

favorites come in the top three and as runners-up. You may see a few new small businesses that made our list this year and I encourage you to check them out and let them know that you found them in the Animal Print. This issue also coincides with two major milestones in my life. The first is hard for me to believe, however June of this year marks the Animal Print’s 10 year anniversary! I don’t know how this crept up so quickly. It has literally caught me off guard but I have some unique plans underway to not only celebrate the magazine’s birthday but to also thank readers and advertisers for their continued support. The Animal Print would not be possible without you. The other event that makes this month rather bitter sweet is the one year anniversary of Harvey’s death. Harvey was the inspiration for creating this magazine and was truly my doggie soul mate. Harvey died one year ago today and it still feels like yesterday that he was sitting at my feet while I typed my letter from the editor. I loved him beyond words and will never forget that sweet boy. Please enjoy the new issue and have a wonderful and safe spring and summer. Stephanie Georgia editor/publisher

Locally and Around The Globe…

Colorado Names ‘Shelter Dogs’ As Official State Pet “If you don’t own a dog, at least one, there is not necessarily anything wrong with you, but there may be something wrong with your life.” - Roger A. Caras

Want a Better Night’s Sleep? Share the Bed With Your Dog! A study by Australian researchers at Central Queensland University shows that more and more people are finding it difficult to get a good night’s sleep. The data, collected from 13,000 participants, shows that nearly 70% of people are regularly woken up at night, usually by their partner. The good news? People are a lot less likely to be awakened by their dog, says Professor Drew Dawson. While having neither a partner nor a pet in the bed generally offers the best possibility of an uninterrupted night’s sleep, when given the option of sharing the bed with your partner or with your dog – your best bet is to snuggle up next to your four-legged friend.

Colorado has now become the 12th state in the country to designate an official state pet. While other states have chosen specific breeds, North Carolina’s state dog is the Plott Hound, Maryland has the Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Massachusetts the Boston Terrier, and Alaska with the Malamute, Colorado went in a different direction, honoring all shelter dogs (and cats, too!) as their official state pet. So, no matter what breed a dog is in Colorado, if he was adopted from a shelter, he’s an official state pet. The bill was originally proposed by a group of Colorado school children in an effort to teach them about the state legislative system. Governor John Hickenlooper signed the bill into law alongside his own rescue dog, Sky. The law wasn’t passed without opposition, though. Not surprisingly, lobbyists for purebred dogs and pet store puppies fought the bill. One opponent even suggested that the bill discriminated against reptiles and birds that can also be pets. Governor Hickenlooper also signed another important bill supporting dogs into law – one that requires all police officers to undergo training in dog behavior and handling to avoid unnecessary dog deaths. Many high-profile cases of dogs being shot by police under questionable circumstances spurred the new law. Big kudos to the state of Colorado for both honoring rescued dogs and for protecting our family pets!

Hollywood Gets Grumpy. Grumpy Cat, the Internet sensation with the permanent sourpuss whose photos have been seen by millions, has her own movie deal. The cat, whose real name is Tardar Sauce, rose to fame last fall, when a family member of her owner, Tabatha Bundesen, posted a photo of the cat on Reddit. The Internet took it from there, with people Photoshopping captions on that and subsequent photos. Since then, the Arizona cat has picked up nearly 1 million Facebook followers, drew long lines at the South by Southwest convention in Texas, has a book on the way and will have a “speaking” part in the Broken Roads Productions film based on her persona. Will that make Grumpy Cat happy? That remains to be seen.

s a result of our country’s current economic crisis, countless American families are struggling to make ends meet, pay bills, and put food on the table. Unfortunately, today’s uncertain economic landscape does not just affect humans; it also has a serious negative impact on our nation’s pets. Shelters across the country have been reporting a sharp increase in the number of owner surrenders— simply because people can no longer afford to care for their beloved pets. The USDA approximates that nearly 50 million Americans qualify for and use Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP); that is almost 15 percent of U.S. residents. However, food stamps do not cover pet food and do not defray the cost of pet ownership. With unemployment remaining high, inflation rising, and so many people facing the loss of their homes, it has become increasingly difficult for people to provide and care for their furry family members as well. When a family is attempting to cope with the psychological ramifications of so much loss, the additional grief over losing a pet— which many people consider to be family members— can be unbearable. Sociologists have confirmed that losing a pet due to financial reasons can cause depression, loneliness and feelings of isolation. The good news is that there is a growing number of organizations which recognize the need for and importance of providing financial assistance to struggling pet owners! One of these wonderful organizations is the Pet Food Stamps program, a registered New York state non-profit corporation which was created to help low income families provide nutritious meals for their pets. Their primary goal is threefold; reduce the burden on local shelters, prevent the needless death of loving pets and help keep families together. The Pet Food Stamps are just like regular food stamps, only unlike regular food stamps, they may be used to purchase pet food! If you qualify for food stamps, you already qualify for Pet Food Stamps! The Pet Food Stamps program works exclusively with Petflow.com, an online retailer. Once you qualify and become a member of the program, you will receive free

monthly shipments of pet food, right to your front door, no matter what state you live in! The list of pet foods available includes certain prescription diets and many premium brands such as Wellness, Solid Gold, Castor and Pollux, Blue Buffalo, etc. They also carry food for a variety of small mammals and reptiles. This amazing program is not federally funded and is able to offer this life saving assistance solely through the generosity of contributors and patrons. In the short while that this program has been in existence, they have already received hundreds of thousands of applications. Due to the great demand and their small staff, they ask that any applicants allow six weeks for processing. For more information, to apply, or to make a donation please visit petfoodstamps.org. Another organization dedicated to providing pet food for owners in need is the locally operated Maggie’s Pet Pantry. The pantry was founded by Carol Terranova, a previous volunteer at the Hopkinton Animal Shelter, and named after her beloved rescued Yellow Lab, Maggie. The pantry is located at the Richmond Animal Control Headquarters in Richmond, Rhode Island. While originally intended to help residents of South County, Terranova wants to spread the word. In an interview printed in The Chariho Times she is quoted as saying, “There are a lot of people in the community that haven’t heard of us, but we can help. We have already had people come from Providence, from Cranston and even Connecticut.” The pantry, which is stocked with food, toys, treats and even leashes and collars, operates from 10:00am to 12:00pm on Saturdays and from 3:00pm to 4:00pm on Wednesdays. For more information, please email maggieprov129@cox.net. The Animal Rescue League of Southern Rhode Island also runs a pet food pantry in collaboration with The Johnnycake Center of Peace Dale. Their pantry serves approximately 50 families each month and last year they distributed more than 600 vouchers for pet food. For more information you may telephone the administrative office at 401-792-2293 or email arlsri@verizon.net. The Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RISPCA) offers assistance in defraying the cost of medical care for animals belonging to the sick, disabled, elderly or otherwise unable to afford services through The Marvin Fund. The Marvin Fund was named after a down on his luck Black Lab, twice relinquished to the shelter, who finally found his forever home when he was adopted by Dr. E. J. Finocchio. Dr. Finnocchio founded the Marvin Fund in an effort to give others in need of food, medical care, or shelter the same second (or third!) chance that his beloved Marvin received. For information regarding The Marvin Fund, please visit www.marvinfund.org. The Rhode Island Veterinary Medical Association also founded the Companion Animal Foundation (CAF) to address the need for funds with which to care for sick and injured pets of low income pet owners. To learn whether you qualify for assistance or to make a donation, you may visit www.companionanimalfoundation.org. It is very inspiring, encouraging and heartwarming to know that in a time when so many families are struggling with heart wrenching decisions regarding their financial situations and their pets, there are also many people working selflessly to provide help and assistance!

{Behavior} Why Does My Dog... Stare at Me? Written By Dr. Patty Khuly for vetstreet.com

It’s not hard to imagine why a loyal dog might stare devotedly at his master. It’s the stuff of Old Yeller, White Fang and Lassie –– starers, all. But some dogs take staring to extremes, following their owners around with baleful eyes as if expecting links of sausage to fly from their human’s fingertips. Let’s face it: Dogs love their owners, but when they stare expectantly, it’s not usually because they’re trapped in a reverie of devotion. Rather, it’s because they’re thinking they might get something. And usually, that “something” involves a tasty snack.

But dogs can—and do—stare at their owners for plenty of non-food issues, too. Indeed, anything a dog might want that a human can provide could be the source of the staring behavior, from a fun game of fetch to a ride in the car or a long run. Then there’s the possibility that a dog is simply seeking attention in any form, or perhaps she’s merely waiting for praise or direction. Some dogs may just be trying to read an emotion in our human facial expressions. In any case, staring is typically considered to be a good thing. In fact, most trainers encourage dogs to stare at their owners while awaiting their cues. And if you’ve never done it, gazing deeply into a dog’s eyes can be a highly rewarding pastime. Before you try it, be aware that staring directly into a dog’s eyes can be considered a direct challenge. That’s why mutual staring is an activity that’s only to be encouraged within the context of a healthy dog-human relationship unsullied by any taint of aggression or behavioral abnormalities.

W

hen we look back upon our lives, out of the vast web of interconnected moments which lurk in the back of our memories, one usually rises to the surface— the one otherwise unremarkable moment, which only in retrospect do we realize, shifted the course of our lives and changed us forever. For LuAnn Botelho, a school bus driver from Jamestown, Rhode Island, her life was forever changed by two seemingly unrelated moments: a story she heard about a stranger, and a visit to a local farm. Botelho recalls hearing the story on the news; an elderly man had gone missing, possibly suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, and wandering off. A few days later his body was found only a few thousand feet away from his home. She remembers thinking to herself, “What a terrible waste. There must be some way to help.” Unbeknownst to Botelho at the time, she would soon discover the perfect marriage between her desire to help and her lifelong love for dogs on a local horse farm in Exeter, Rhode Island. She and her husband visited this farm to see a horse she was considering purchasing, and they were greeted in the driveway by a gorgeous, large, black and tan

bloodhound, baying loudly at their arrival. One look at this dog and Botelho says, “I was in love!” A few months later, when they learned that a brand new, wriggling, adorable litter of black and tan puppies had been born on the farm, they immediately knew they were getting a bloodhound! Bothelo was drawn to one very special female pup, who would not leave her side, and who followed her every movement with her soulful little eyes. She picked her up and said, “This is the one!” While she initially adopted Abby to be purely a companion pet and beloved family member, the tragic story of the missing man lingered with her. She had already done extensive research into Search and Rescue, and said, “I was particularly drawn to the idea of using canines and their amazing sense of smell to help locate lost or missing people.” She had learned that bloodhounds were the leading breed for tracking and trailing missing persons, and the idea of training Abby as a search and rescue dog came naturally. However, she never could have predicted just how special Abby would prove to be! Abby was trained by American Mantrailing Police and Work Dog Association (AMPWDA) in Greencastle Indiana. AMPWDA boasts some of the finest and most critically

acclaimed Master Trainers in the world, and is the nation’s premiere provider of K9 Training and Search and Rescue Certification. AMPWDA’s expert staff have participated in hundreds of manhunts and lost or missing person searches, and have worked professionally with every level of law enforcement: local police, state police, FBI and the US Marshall Service. Abby was primarily trained in what the AMPWDA calls “Mantrailing.” Mantrailing is the scent specific pursuit of an individual person’s trail, which typically consists of “skin rafts,” or shed skin cells on the ground and within low brush. Abby requires a Place Last Seen (PLS) and an uncontaminated scent article containing the odor of the subject for whom she is searching. From the PLS, Abby will determine the direction of travel by smelling the scent article and then locating the trail of microscopic skin particles containing the same scent on the ground. After she is given her search command, Bothelo says, “Usually she will make a few circles, attempting to locate the trail. Once she has found it, she is off!” Abby’s incredibly keen nose lifts from the ground and begins to sniff the air when they approach Continued on Page 25.

what is called the “hot zone” or “scent cone.” This is the area where the subject is located, and therefore it contains a large quantity of scent particles both on the ground and in the air. The change in Abby’s body language is referred to as a “proximity alert.” Bothelo exclaims, “It tells me to be on my guard because we are approaching the subject.” Abby is so adept at Mantrailing, that she was the first dog to obtain the coveted Distinguished Expert AWPWDA Level 3 Mantrailing Certification. To obtain this certificate, Abby had to successfully complete a grueling and highly difficult Search and Rescue test course. The scent trail she had to follow was a

minimum of four hours old, and the trail on which it was set covered four different surfaces, including a road crossing, a creek crossing, and multiple sharp turns. Additionally, the trail was intentionally contaminated with another scent. In the many years since Abby was awarded this certificate, only three other dogs have successfully completed this course! The most recent missing person whom Abby was called upon to help locate was just a few months ago. Apparently, a person had just walked away from their house and vanished without a trace. Abby and Bothelo arrived on the scene and Bothelo gave Abby a scent article from the missing person. Both-

elo says Abby did her customary few circles, and then took off down the street. However, after following the trail for quite a distance, Abby abruptly stopped and looked at Bothelo. “This was very strange behavior for Abby,” she says. “The only thing I could think of was that maybe the person had been picked up in a vehicle.” A few phone calls confirmed that she was correct; the person had been picked up by a friend, and was safe and sound at that friend’s home. Abby and her amazing olfactory senses had pinpointed the precise spot along the very long road where the person’s scent stopped. Continued on Page 26.

Team ABBY! Continued from page 19. While this ending may not be as dramatic as some, for the family of that person, knowing sooner rather than later that their loved one was safe and accounted for meant the world. As the above story illustrates, when people are missing they are not always lost or in danger. However, when a pet goes missing they are always lost, and always in danger. Every pet owner whose dog has ever wandered out of an open yard gate, or cat has escaped through an open window, knows the countless hours of panic stricken worry and fear, during which the mind races to every possible worst case scenario: Have they been attacked by another animal? Were they stolen by a person with malicious intent? Are they injured, cold, hungry, and afraid? Have they been hit by a car? Veterinarian offices, coffee shops and supermarkets are wallpapered with the pleas of desperate pet owners, searching for their missing companions— “Beloved Dog Missing: Heartbroken Child,” or “Older Cat Missing: Needs Medication, Please Help.” Something which makes LuAnn Bothelo and Abby incredibly special is Bothelo’s generosity in volunteering Abby’s significant skills to help locate missing pets. Abby first searched for a missing pet, and consequently saved a life, on a bitter cold night in January, 2007. Bothelo received a highly distressed phone call from her friend, Karen, asking if Abby could possibly help search for her missing dog, Lola. It was raining violently, with strong gale winds whipping through the night air. Bothelo agreed to help, and they arranged to meet the next morning at Lola’s Place Last Seen. Time was of the essence. “I knew there was a strong possibility that Lola could be hurt, and this thought kept surfacing in my mind,” says Bothelo. The search began on a difficult note, as the scent article Karen provided LuAnn with had been contaminated with many different scents, making it virtually impossible for Abby to discern which scent she was to trail. They decided to begin again, this time at the house from which Lola had escaped. Abby was presented with the same scent article, but as there was a greater concentration of Lola’s scent in this area, she was able to identify Lola’s scent among the others present and the search was on. Abby lead them to a wall toward the highway, and along the way they spotted paw prints which told them they we on the right track. Bothelo says that Abby was very interested in this wall, but was unable to pass; she repeatedly went back and forth from the wall to the trail. Eventually, she led them to an opening in a fence where they could squeeze through; the trail she was on led directly to the busy highway. They walked along the top edge of highway, with their hearts in their throats, braced for the worst. As they passed a large bluff of pine trees, Bothelo spotted Lola— terrified, cold, wet and holding up her back leg with a terrible limp. After unsuccessful attempts to slow the racing highway traffic in order to safely reach Lola, the police were called in for assistance. Lola was finally rescued and rushed to the emergency veterinary hospital, while the police officer loaded Abby into his cruiser and took her for a victory ride! Due to the freezing cold temperatures, her injury, and her proximity to the highway, if Abby had not found Lola when she did, it is near certain that Lola would not have survived her ordeal. Bothelo says that finding Lola alive stands out in her mind as one of her most rewarding experiences in her many years of Search and Rescue. Since that cold and fateful day, Abby has successfully located nine dogs, five cats, a pet duck, and even a tortoise that had been missing from a veterinarian’s office for two weeks. Bothelo explains that searching for the tortoise proved difficult, as it

was not easy to acquire a scent article. They ended up using another tortoise to provide Abby with the correct scent! Abby and Bothelo have even been called upon to travel to a private island to track coyotes, and she described the island and the experience as beautiful and exhilarating. When local shelters receive phone calls from people looking for their missing pets, they frequently Abby with Lola, her first find! turn to Abby and Bothelo. Such assistance is extremely valuable to shelter staff and animal control officers, as it frees up their time and resources and allows them to focus on the vast and unending task of caring for homeless and un-owned animals. The demand for Abby’s help in locating lost pets has been so great, that Bothelo co-created a web site called Furbaby Alert along with former animal control officer Cathy Gregory, for the express purpose of providing the owners of missing pets a network of support and a place to request assistance. It was through this website that Abby was recently able to reunite a lost cat named Scooby Doo with her extremely thankful and relieved family. Bothelo also cofounded a national organization called American Pet Search and Rescue, with members spanning the country and all sharing the primary goal of reuniting lost pets with their families. Bothelo never charges for her and Abby’s services. In fact, she said that if people whom they have helped feel compelled to make a monetary contribution, she kindly requests that they do so in the form of a donation to the shelter of Bothelo’s choice in Abby’s name! Anyone seeking their help may contact Bothelo via email at teamabby@aol.com or directly via telephone at 401-423-1569. As all of the expenses associated with travel, training, and equipment come directly out of Bothelo’s personal funds, donations are warmly appreciated and may be sent to AMPWDA (Pet Search Team) 706 Vale Street, Greencastle, Indiana 46135, or by visiting www.ampwda.com/fees.html. Abby, a true American hero, has been nominated for the 2013 American Humane Association Hero Dog Award in the search and rescue category! You may vote for Abby (we already did!) by visiting www.herodogawards.org and then clicking on Abby’s charity partner, The Sage Foundation For Dogs That Served. If Abby wins, The Sage Foundation will receive $1,500 and Abby will be awarded a plaque recognizing her for all of her tireless hard work and dedication and she will be flown to Los Angeles to meet Betty White! The definition of the word hero is: 1) a person of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. 2) a person who, in the opinion of others, has heroic qualities or has performed a heroic act and is regarded as a model or ideal. Replace with the word person with the word dog, and you have Abby to a tee! Abby currently resides in Jamestown, Rhode Island with Botehlo and her husband and their two other dogs, four cats, and horse named “Rowdy!”

Heatstroke!

Summer Days Can Quickly Turn Deadly for Overheated Dogs. In the summer, a hot dog is both a ballpark staple and a veterinarian’s nightmare. Dogs — the four-legged kind — get “cooked” far more easily than people do. And that means dog lovers need to be careful to be sure their pets don’t end up in the ER with heat stroke. (Cats, by the way, don’t tend to have heat problems generally, because they have too much sense to run around when it’s too hot.) Since most dogs will risk their lives to go with the people they love, it’s up to pet lovers to make sure the summer heat doesn’t put their pets in deadly danger. That means knowing the signs of heat stress and reacting to a pet in danger as if it’s a life-threatening emergency — which it can be. Don’t Take Chances Though humans cope with hot weather by sweating, dogs shed heat by panting, which is a very poor cooling system. In the wild, dogs seek shade during the hottest part of the day; left to their own devices, most pet dogs will, too — unless they are lured into activity by ball tossed across the yard or the rattle of a leash offering an exciting outing. Leave your pet at home when it’s warm, never leave your dog in the car even on a mild day (heat builds up quickly), and exercise your pet in the cooler mornings or evenings. If you wonder if a street or sidewalk is too hot for your pet to walk on, place the palm of your hand on the pavement: if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your dog’s feet.

For dogs with short faces (the so-called brachycephalic breeds), such as Bulldogs, Pugs, Pekinese, and mixes of these breeds, the risk is even higher. These dogs cannot breathe well even under ideal circumstances and absolutely must be kept in air-conditioned quarters during the warmer months. Older dogs, overweight or obese dogs, and unfit dogs are also at higher risk. Warning Signs A dog’s normal temperature is about 101.5, and a degree up or down is just fine. More than a couple of degrees up can be reason for concern, and it’s certainly an indication that you need to get your dog calm and cool. However, when a dog’s internal temperature reaches 105 or above, his life is in danger, Continued on next page.

is still in search of his forever home!

Bodhi

Do You Remember Bobo (now Bodhi)? This stunning and sweet 1 yr old boy is STILL looking for his home! When we included Bodhi’s story in the last issue, the guess was that he was a 59lb Box/shep mix…well, we did a DNA test and found out that he’s pure MUTT! The most prominent breeds in his DNA are Lab, Vizsla, Border Collie and Shepherd…there are a few other bits thrown in but we can certainly see how this is his mix. Bodhi is a very gentle, calm and sweet boy indoors which is remarkable for only being a 1 year old pup. Not only is he beautiful but he loves to play with other dogs. Why he’s been a little harder to place is that he’s a bit on the shy/ unsure side when meeting new people but he’s a love once he warms up. His foster mom is very much in love with him and sad she cannot keep him but has offered to pay for transitional training into a new home so that his new family understands how to work on consistency in intros and help him blossom into a more confidant dog. Bodhi is looking for a calm home with a fenced yard. Ideally another playful dog would be waiting for him as he seems to truly blossom when he can run off leash with another pup…so we feel at least a fencesd yard is a pretty important element for his happiness. He rides wonderfully in the car, loves going for walks, visiting the dog park and has become pretty good at running with his foster mom a few times a week. He is also house trained and just super laid back in the house. Bodhi is currently being fostering in RI and his petfinder profile can be seen here: www.petfinder.com/petdetail/25127546 For more info or questions email sgeorgiablue@gmail.com

Heatstroke! Continued. and you must act immediately. But since most people don’t carry a thermometer around, they have to rely on the signs of an overheated dog. These include: • Heavy, rapid panting • Salivating • Glassy-eyed expression • Anxiety and restlessness • Confusion • Exhaustion or fatigue • Bright red or blue/purple gums • Vomiting or diarrhea • Collapse Don’t wait until the problem becomes dangerously obvious. Keep an eye on your pet and take action at the first sign of trouble. Offer lots of water, and if your dog likes to swim, provide access to a baby pool or larger body of water. In Case of an Emergency If you’ve missed the warnings and your dog is overheated, move your pet immediately to the shade or an air-cooled area. Use cool water — not ice-cold water or ice, which constricts blood vessels and traps heat — on your dog’s belly, concentrating on the groin. If you do have a thermometer, lubricate the tip and insert it gently into the rectum to get an accurate temperature to share with your veterinarian. Offer your pet cool water to drink but don’t force water into your dog’s mouth. And then call your veterinarian or an emergency veterinary clinic to let someone know you are on your way.

ADOPT ME!

Bristol Animal Shelter – RI • 401.457.8581 • Giving@FriendsoftheBristolAnimalShelter.org

Angel was found in a church parking lot, and came into the shelter with a Guardian Angel watching over her. Angel came to the Shelter emaciated, her liver and kidneys were shutting down, and her blood count life threatening. Her recovery was slower than hoped for, and her prognosis appeared hopeless but she has made a full recovery.

Charlie had to live his young life on the streets, looking for handouts from people that would rather shoo him away as extend a kind hand. He was rescued off the streets, but not before falling ill to intestinal illnesses. Now, after receiving much needed veterinary care, Charlie is been declared healthy and adoptable.

Parker is a handsome boy with lots of energy. He has passed his Good Citizen Training from Outbound Hound; he truly enjoyed his training sessions. Always willing to please. He loves his toys, especially his Red Ball. Parker enjoyed his training sessions. After being fully vetted this “Rock Star is eager to please, and eager for you to come and visit him.”

Mack has been at the Bristol Animal Shelter for five long months. He is a 3 year old Old English Bulldog. Macky has been fully vaccinated, neutered and has tested negative for heartworm/lime disease. Maddie is a special girl with a beautiful personality and adores everyone. While nursing her kittens, Maddie lived in a foster home with a dog, as well as other adult cats and did fine. She is 4 yrs old.

Juno is a very happy girl, she wags her body and is always excited to see you. She knows her basic obedience and would love to find someone who will be willing to run or bike ride with her. She doesn’t mind other dogs or cats but she will need to be placed in a home without children.

Zion is a rottie mix who is around 1 1/2 yrs old. He is a sweet boy with lots of personality and energy. He is also affectionate and will follow you around for attention. Due to his high prey drive and noted food aggression with other dogs, he should go to a home free of all other animals and small children.

Potter League for Animals – Middletown, RI • 401.846.8276 • info@potterleague.org

Beezer loves to exercise his legs (he loves to roam the house) but can also have a sweet side as well. He’s looking for an adult only home where he can be the only cat to get your attention.

Sasha may come off a little shy, but once she’s comfortable she’s very friendly. She’s a shy but sweet cat that loves to relax. This laid back kitty would do well in a home with adults and no other pets.

Lady is sassy and very particular about which home she dreams of next. She is a pint sized pooch who would love to be the one and only pet of your household. She is charismatic and a little full of herself. She would love to live with older teens and adults who can fawn over her lovely ways.

ELVIS (Quick-Tranchida) EARLY 1990s–2013 Bad ass, asparagus-lovin’ cat who will be greatly missed by his dad(s) and Providence party-goers alike.

Merle

It would be too easy to describe the enormous amount of sadness I’m feeling over this past friday’s tragic loss of Merle, aka Merlin the Magician, aka my dog Arrow’s best buddy in the world. Instead I’d like to celebrate the amazing dog he was, how he was the very definition of a Catahoula Leopard dog, in both amazing intellect and engaging personality. Adopted six years ago by my best friend Jenn and her boyfriend (now husband) Mike, Merle quickly became a central, loving part of all our lives. Anybody who’s had the luck of meeting Merle will agree: there was never a human he didn’t immediately love and win over with his charm and affection. Before my husband and I moved to LA last summer, our catahoula Arrow and Merle spent endless woodland romps, park trips, and hangouts together over the years. The two were inseparable. We’re beyond lucky to have spent so much time with him, and our visits home won’t fully be the (above) Merle. (right) Merle and his best friend Arrow.

same without seeing Merle bound out the door in greeting at the Viele-Valentine home. Love you Merle. Even though you’re apart from us physically, I know you’re watching over everyone you love, and that you’ll keep Arrow in line :) Love, Auntie Becky
