t’s finally vacation time, and the reason I know this is because I am just days away from heading off on vacation myself, with the dogs in tow of course! I also know it’s vacation time because this is our Travel Issue! I debated what location to feature for this

Something else that we’ve been enjoying around here lately is fostering some adorable pups that were looking for homes. While I try to do as much as I can for shelters and rescues in the magazine, lately I’ve been feeling like I wanted to help in different way. I was a little nervous that I would get too attached (which I did in a matter of minutes) but I’ve been able to keep a healthy perspective and realize that it’s about finding these animals their forever home, yet giving them a calm, structured environment. My last foster was adopted fairly quickly and while it was sad to see him go, the sense of joy I felt knowing that I had helped in some small way was beyond fulfilling. If you have the desire and want to foster a pet, there are a number of worthy rescues in the area that are in desperate need of foster home volunteers. I’ve listed just a few on page 29 and plan to feature a more in depth article about private rescues in a future issue. Whether you get a chance to vacation with your furry family in P-Town, foster a pet or just take a long walk in your neighborhood, I hope you are able to find a sense of joy and fulfilment this summer. More Protection For Dogs Left Outside! The legislation regarding protecting dogs that are left outside 24/7 has passed by way of ordinances in Warwick, Cranston, and Providence. East Providence already had it in place. The state legislation did pass in the RI Senate but is being held up in the RI House of Representatives. The bill would protect dogs left outside 24/7 without proper shelter.

Traveling with a pet involves more than just loading the animal in the back seat and motoring off—especially if you will be driving long distances or plan to be away for a long time. Check out the following tips to help you prepare for a safe and smooth car trip:

What To Do With Your Dog No need to worry about your “kids” being bored on this trip. Dogs can tag along on almost any activity you can think of in Provincetown. We highly recommend bringing dogs that are acclimated to crowds and other dogs. There are hoards of people and dogs walking up and down Commercial Street and it’s not unusual for both human and animal to come up and say hello. In fact, there were so many people eager to give Simon and Harvey treats (one man just carried dog treats with him and didn’t even own a dog!) we finally had to refuse.

Dog Park If your dog needs a more structured activity and you’re interested in meeting some of the locals, the Pilgrim Bark Park is an obvious source of pride in this fido-friendly community. Supported by volunteers and private donations, this gated, off-leash dog park is adorned with painted benches and dog houses decorated by local talent. But if you’re looking to break free from the dog park routine here are a number of other pooch positive activities for you all to enjoy. Beaches Provincetown is the only town in Cape Cod with off-leash beaches! Dogs are welcome to roam (with their owners within sight and sound control) off-leash from 6am-9am and 6pm-9pm in the summer and at any time in the winter. Harbor Beach can be accessed from Commercial Street and is a pleasant stroll along downtown. The West End beaches are more popular for swimming, just make sure you keep an eye out for signs that tell you where dogs are not allowed. Herring Cove is not only the most popular gay beach, but has miles of dog-friendly beaches and remarkable sunsets. While Race Point Beach, on the Atlantic Ocean side of Provincetown, is great for viewing the sunrise.

Hiking If you’re looking for more than just a stroll along Commercial St there are miles of scenic trail to take your dog hiking in Provincetown. You can take a beautiful wooded walk throughout the conservation land surrounding Clapps Pond, located off of Route 6 East. Or try the Beech Forest nature walk, a two mile loop around a pond. For those of you looking for a more intense adventure you can brave the long hike to Long Point Light House. Shopping There are lots of great little shops and galleries all along Commercial St and you’ll find water bowls set out at most doorways. It’s not surprising in this dog-mecca that you’ll be hard-pressed to find a shop that won’t allow your dog to tag along inside. Dogs Allowed At The New South Kingstown Dog Park!

hree years ago South Kingstown dogs were left with few options when it came to running off-leash. They felt Snoopy’s pain of finding “No Dogs Allowed” signs at every turn. But on May 2, 2010, the South Kingstown Dog Park Association (SKDPA) was proud to unleash the neighborhood dogs and their owners into their very own safe haven at the newly created South Kingstown Dog Park. The sun was shining and the dogs anxiously waiting with their owners as the South Kingstown Dog Park Association cut the leash (yes, an actual leash) at the grand opening of the dog park. SKDPA President Heidi Palmer McNeil fought back tears as she thanked everyone for their outpouring of support. Once all the speeches were complete and everyone was thanked for their efforts, the dogs finally got their moment to run free. It was a community effort that was years in the making.

17 Organizing, petitioning, and a remarkable collaboration between Andy Nota, Director of Administrative Services, Bud McLeod, SKDPA’s founding chairman, and the many active SKDPA members led to the Town Council’s unanimous vote on March 10, 2008, in favor of the authorization of $10,000 in town funds and the designation of the dog park’s current site at the Broad Rock ball fields. It was then up to SKDPA to raise the additional $40,000 needed to complete the project. SKDPA held Doggie Socials, marched in the Veteran’s Day parade, set up booths at Belmont Market, sold t-shirts, buttons and commemorative bricks, and hosted a successful Silent Auction in June 2009. Their efforts paid off by raising almost $35,000 toward the creation of the dog park. By July 2009, it was time to start the excavation and grading. Many people and businesses worked together to bring the plans to fruition. Freshly grown grass for running, a gravel path for walking, trees and fire hydrants for sniffing all enclosed by a picturesque wood fence and secured with wire mesh—it is easy to see all the hard work and care that went into the creation

The park is located at 349 Broad Rock Road but the entrance is actually off of St. Dominic Road behind the Broad Rock playing fields. The dog park spans approximately an acre and a half of land and is divided into two sections’ one for large dogs over 30lbs and one for small dogs under 30lbs, each with a double-gated holding area for undoing and re-attaching leashes. “The Man in the White Sharkskin Suit” by Lucette Lagnado charts the course of a family from Cairo, from the era of King Farouk, to Paris-not the glamorous part--to America. But, for me, it is also the story of a stray cat named “Pouspous.” The writer, as a six year old daughter of an older father who frequents the bars and casinos but likes to take his youngest child everywhere on his boulevardier errands, likes best to stand on the little balcony of their home. She looks out at the busy street while holding, cradling, embracing, her feline friend, her best ally in this world. She feeds him bits and scraps from her own little meals. Yes, Pouspous is a feral friend, who joined the clan on her own, and stayed for the warm welcome from the alley realm into which she had been born. Nevertheless, and tragically, Pouspous is left behind once Nasser comes to power and expels all foreigners--the British colonialists in their crisp uniforms, and the elegant French officers and tourists, and the Jews who had lived amongst them for centuries. The family Lagnado delays departure but in the end packs up, leaving behind their wealth and status, their life style,....and, worst of all for Lucette, their pet cat Pouspous. I have very much enjoyed reading this sad but stylish memoir, but the most poignant part, actually, for me, was the abandonment of the household domestic ally, Pouspous, and the cat commands all my stories about the book. How a different cat makes the journey from Egypt to France. Lucette sees a cat in a cage at the airport and asks, why not ours? She trusts her father, and also her mother, but when they tell her, Pouspous prefers to stay put in her own place, she sort-of believes it and goes along with the hope. But during their lengthy and unhappy sojourn in down-andout Paris, waiting to find out what will become of them and when and where and in what language, she dwells again and again on the fate of Pouspous. Her happiest hours and her deepest nostalgia, involve those moments on that balcony with that cat in her loving arms. Her dream is not France or America but the little terrace and the purring companion, the

pair of them contemplating their present and their future together. Well, this book packs a lot of cynical insights, melancholy reminders, and ironic scenes. Like, how her brothers discover that the dancers from the Folies Bergeres are gorgeous only on stage lit by the glare of the lights, and the fancy bar-girls are only transvestites in heavy make-up: everything is illusion, disappointment, deceit. Like, how her father and mother lose their glamour and their beauty, pride and dignity. But Pouspous recalls the value of our pets. They capture the happy scenes of our comfortable childhood dreamland and they share it with us. Maybe the cat went back to where it came from. Perhaps it found another fate and lived forever. In Eden or Paradise or Heaven it is possible that Lucette will come upon Pouspous after all. And they can look down from that great balcony in the sky upon their private pillow of cloud on our lives on the streets of the world below. Makes a great metaphor. I tell my writing classes, “Put an animal into your story, and it will come to life!” “The Man in the White Sharkskin Suit” is worth reading for a lot of reasons, but put Pouspous at the top of the list of them!

On June 9, 2010, The American Humane Association donated $1,000 for repairs to the Warwick Animal Shelter, which was destroyed during a flood that began in early March and had destroyed many businesses and homes in the city by March 31st. The shelter in Warwick was completely submerged under the flood waters, as the nearby river rose to unprecedented levels.The shelter is now under construction and repair. Virtually everything in the shelter was destroyed, except for stainless steel holding cages. The flood waters rose so quickly that shelter staff only had time to get the animals to safety. The community room for cats, records dating back many years and all of their equipment and supplies were destroyed. “We hope that the Warwick Animal Shelter is able to rebuild quickly so they can continue their important work,” said Debrah Schnackenberg, American Humane’s vice president of Animal Protection Programs. “When disasters strike it is wonderful to see the community band together to help rebuild, as we are seeing in Warwick.”

ASPCA Awards $3,000 Grant to the Ocean State Animal Coalition The ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) recently announced a grant of $3,000 to the Ocean State Animal Coalition (OSAC). The grant funding will be used to spread awareness of a low-cost community spay/neuter clinic designed to reduce pet overpopulation in Rhode Island and nearby Massachusetts. OSAC is a consortium of several Rhode Island animal welfare groups, veterinarians and animal control officers, including the Rhode Island Veterinary Medical Association (RIVMA), RIVMA Companion Animal Foundation, Rhode Island Animal Control Officers Association, Potter League for Animals, PawsWatch, Providence Animal Rescue League, Providence Animal Control, and Stand Up for Animals.

The group is in the process of opening the Rhode Island Community Spay/Neuter Clinic in Warwick, R. I., a low-cost spay/neuter clinic modeled after the Humane Alliance in Asheville, N.C. In addition to providing vital spay/neuter surgeries and offering standard vaccines, the organization will also provide transportation for animals from regional shelters, rescue groups, and targeted low income pet owners. “OSAC is dedicated to ensuring that every pet parent who wants to spay or neuter their pet has access to our services regardless of their financial circumstances,” said Executive Director at Ocean State Animal Coalition Liz Skrobisch. “As our clinic will be both affordable and accessible, we are removing the impediments most frequently cited for not neutering a pet.”

And many of these wonderful folks will also cover the cost of heartworm, illnesses, food and all kinds of things while the pet is in your care. Friends of Homeless Animals is a volunteer group that primarily helps Boston Terriers, Boston mixes and other small dogs both locally and nationally. Brandy Alexander is a large, male Boston Terrier, approx. 5-6 years old, and an absolute sweetheart. Recently diagnosed with mild epilepsy he will require an inexpensive medicine twice a day. Brandy is people and dog friendly, but should not be around cats as he is a chaser. He is an energetic and fun-loving boy looking for a good home.

Jimbo is a 5 year old Boston Terrier. He was surrendered because he did not get along with the male dogs in the house, so he will need to be kept away from other males. But this sweet boy will love you forever if you give him a chance. He is good on a leash and can sit, stay, and come when called. He will always be by your side.

Liam is a super sweet Boston Terrier. He is housebroken, loves people, and gets along with cats and other dogs. He is a very laid back dog and at only 15 lbs he does not take up much space. Liam has a leaky heart valve, which does not require medicine at the moment, but he will need someone able to provide for his future medical needs.

Bubba is a very smart 7 year old male Boston Terrier. He doesn’t like the cold and actually sleeps under his blanket at night. He is very lovable, but gets a little nervous around lots of people. He has a history of mild, infrequent seizure activity, which does not require medication at the moment.

Bobo is a 2 year old Shi Tzu. He is very sweet and playful and would make an excellent companion. Bobo came to the RISPCA because his owner was moving and could not take him along. Peaches is a 5 year old Corella Cockatoo. These guys require experienced and educated homes. She warms up quickly, and is very affectionate with friends. She is somewhat vocal, and loves to be the center of attention. Peaches is special needs because she is missing her left foot. She still gets around great, but will need some special considerations.

Fox is a spunky, year-old female mini lop. She was surrendered because her family could no longer afford her medical bills. Fox has some underlying dental issue. She loves run around time, and isn’t shy about getting into things. Fox will likely require further medical care, primarily dental, down the road, but will make a wonderful addition to the family.

Spooky is a quiet senior cat who has lived with multiple cats in the past. He is neutered and ready to find his forever home. This beautiful boy will be a wonderful companion for any family. Visit the RISPCA to meet Spooky and you’ll fall in love with this sweet gentle boy.

Brie is an all white, blue-eyed, short-haired cat. She is about a year old and spayed. She is affectionate, but does have some “cattitude”. But you won’t be able to blame her once you see how beautiful she is.

Darcy is a short-haired, dark brown tabby. He is about 8 years old. Darcy tested positive for feline AIDS, so he needs to be housed in a home without other cats or in a home that already has an AIDS positive cat. He is very sweet. All he wants to do is snuggle up on your lap and be loved.

Bailey is a 3 year old, spayed, short-haired calico cat. She is very sweet. She is a bit shy when you first meet her, but once she warms up to you, she is very sweet and loyal. She loves to sit in the catwalk and look out the windows.

MacKenzie is from the home of a hoarder. She has been vaccinated for distemper and rabies. She tested negative for Leukemia and Aids. She has been spayed. She does have a chronic weepy eye, but does not appear that this is a contagious condition. She has a nice and agreeable personality.
