year and wanted a destination that was uber dog friendly, not too far away, but with the feel that you have traveled across the globe. After doing a little research, it was clear that Provincetown fit the bill! I hope you get a chance to visit and also find things a bit simplified with all the tips and recommendations listed in the article on page 10. Harvey & Simon (our resident vacation testers) certainly enjoyed themselves and I can’t wait to go back!

t’s finally vacation time, and the reason I know this is because I am just days away from heading off on vacation myself, with the dogs in tow of course! I also know it’s vacation time because this is our Travel Issue! I debated what location to feature for this
Something else that we’ve been enjoying around here lately is fostering some adorable pups that were looking for homes. While I try to do as much as I can for shelters and rescues in the magazine, lately I’ve been feeling like I wanted to help in different way. I was a little nervous that I would get too attached (which I did in a matter of minutes) but I’ve been able to keep a healthy perspective and realize that it’s about finding these animals their forever home, yet giving them a calm, structured environment. My last foster was adopted fairly quickly and while it was sad to see him go, the sense of joy I felt knowing that I had helped in some small way was beyond fulfilling. If you have the desire and want to foster a pet, there are a number of worthy rescues in the area that are in desperate need of foster home volunteers. I’ve listed just a few on page 29 and plan to feature a more in depth article about private rescues in a future issue. Whether you get a chance to vacation with your furry family in P-Town, foster a pet or just take a long walk in your neighborhood, I hope you are able to find a sense of joy and fulfilment this summer. Have a safe and sunny travel season. Sincerely, Stephanie Georgia Editor
More Protection For Dogs Left Outside! The legislation regarding protecting dogs that are left outside 24/7 has passed by way of ordinances in Warwick, Cranston, and Providence. East Providence already had it in place. The state legislation did pass in the RI Senate but is being held up in the RI House of Representatives. The bill would protect dogs left outside 24/7 without proper shelter.

World’s Ugliest Dog Dies At 17 Miss Ellie, a small, bug-eyed Chinese Crested dog whose pimples, moles, hairlessness, missing teeth and lolling tongue helped her win Animal Planet’s “World’s Ugliest Dog” contest in 2009, has died this month at age 17. Pigeon Forge, Tenn., Mayor Keith Whaley proclaimed Nov. 12 as “Miss Ellie Day” since Ellie helped raise more than $100,000 for the Sevier County Humane Society. She will be cremated.

Tips For Safe Car Travel With Your Pet! Planning a road trip? Traveling with a pet involves more than just loading the animal in the back seat and motoring off—especially if you will be driving long distances or plan to be away for a long time. Check out the following tips to help you prepare for a safe and smooth car trip:
1 2 3 4 5
eep your pets safe and secure in a well-ventilated crate or K carrier. There are a variety of wire mesh, hard plastic and soft-sided carriers available. Whatever you choose, make sure it’s large enough for your pet to stand, sit, lie down and turn around in. And P.S., it’s smart to get your pet used to the carrier in the comfort of your home before your trip. et your pet geared up for a long trip by taking him on a G series of short drives first, gradually lengthening time spent in the car. And please be sure to always secure the crate so it won’t slide or shift in the event of a quick stop. our pet’s travel-feeding schedule should start with a light Y meal three to four hours prior to departure. Don’t feed your furry friend in a moving vehicle—even if it is a long drive. ever leave your animal alone in a parked vehicle. On a hot N day, even with the windows open, a parked automobile can become a furnace in no time, and heatstroke can develop. In cold weather, a car can act as a refrigerator, holding in the cold and causing the animal to freeze to death. hat’s in your pet’s traveling kit? In addition to travel W papers, food, bowl, leash, a waste scoop, plastic bags,
grooming supplies, medication and a pet first-aid kit, pack a favorite toy or pillow to give your pet a sense of familiarity.
6
ake sure your pet has a microchip for identification and M wears a collar with a tag imprinted with your home address, as well as a temporary travel tag with your cell phone, destination phone number and any other relevant contact information. Canines should wear flat (never choke!) collars, please.
7
on’t allow your pet to ride with his head outside the window. D This can subject him to inner ear damage and lung infections, and he could be injured by flying objects. And please keep him in the back seat in his crate or with a harness attached to a seat buckle.
8
raveling across state lines? Bring along your pet’s rabies vacT cination record, as some states requires this proof at certain interstate crossings. While this generally isn’t a problem, it’s always smart to be on the safe side.
When it comes to H2O, we say BYO. Opt for bottled water

or tap water stored in plastic jugs. Drinking water from an area he’s not used to could result in tummy upset for your pet. Article courtesy of the ASPCA www.aspca.org

Woof It Up In...
Provincetown! Written by Lana Linscott
Spectacular sunsets, pristine beaches, funky galleries, and welcoming people from all walks of life—Provincetown, MA makes for an amazing pet friendly getaway and this year’s pick for our travel issue.
Harvey & Simon relax on the lawn at the Lands End Inn. Photo by fetchingphoto.com
A
ny Provincetownian could tell you the history behind dogs in Provincetown. In 1620, when the Pilgrims landed in Provincetown Harbor at least two dogs disembarked with them providing protection and assistance, and maybe even a feeling of home. Today, this small seaside community at the tip of Cape Cod has become the ultimate east coast canine resort, thanks to its wealth of pet-friendly dining, accommodations, and activities. The Animal Print staff, that’s including our doggie-experts Simon and Harvey, decided to take trip to P-Town (as it’s dubbed) to see if it really lives up to all this dog-friendly hype. Turns out, it does. Where To Stay With Your Dog When it comes to finding pleasant pet-friendly accommodations in Provincetown, you have the pick of the litter. The list of pet-friendly inns and hotels goes on and on, but we’ve scouted out a few favorites to get an inside look at the dog-friendly experience you’ll receive. Each location provides a different kind of vacation experience, but they all share a love for their four-legged guests. All of the inns we feature include parking for their customers, but if you need to drive into town (which isn’t likely being such a pedestrian-friendly town) there are both private and public parking options. Located within easy walking distance of both the action of downtown and the beauty of the beaches, the historic Land’s End Inn is a peaceful getaway perched atop a hill where you and your dog can retreat to enjoy the mesmerizing Atlantic views from the restful splendor of your one of a kind room. All five lavish pet-friendly suites are Garden Level with your own private entrance and a patio for you to enjoy the sun and the ocean with your best friend napping nearby. With a continental breakfast served daily and complimentary wine and cheese in the evening, it’s a good thing you brought your dog with you or you may never leave the Inn! Owner, Michael MacIntyre, understands how important dogs are to the people and visitors of Provincetown and is excited to be expanding Carlotta and Beluga - offical greeters of the Benchmark Inn

Each dog-friendly room has a private entrance and balcony with either ocean or garden views for you to enjoy and an expanded continental breakfast to start your day off. their pet-friendly accommodations to a total of seven suites next year. The Lands End recommends booking early as rooms go quickly during the summer season. To make reservations contact the Land’s End Inn at (508) 487-0706 or visit www.landsendinn.com. For the vacationer who wants to be in the midst of it all, the Benchmark Inn is centrally located downtown just steps from Provincetown’s great shops and restaurants, but set off on a quiet side-street when you’re ready get away and relax. You and your dog will feel right at home in this modern yet charming inn as you’re greeted by two big, smiling standard poodles, Carlotta and Beluga, and their owner

If your favorite part about Provincetown is the beach, then the Surfside Hotel & Suites is the perfect place for you and your dog. Surfside takes pride in all its doggie visitors as you’ll see when you flip through the album at the front desk of all their past canine guests. You and your dog are welcome to wander Surfside’s private beach or relax on the lounge chairs set out for you, just remember to keep the beach clean by grabbing a bag at one of the stations provided and disposing of it at one of the trash receptacles. While high tide offers only a limited amount of beach to stroll on, the morning low tide allows you miles of beach to explore. And after lots of running along the beach everyone can rinse off at the outdoor, hand-held designated “pet shower.” Surfside definitely goes above and beyond to keep all of their customers happy; dogs are even allowed to come into the lobby with you (just not during breakfast hours). With dozens of pet designated rooms and 5 dog-friendly suites you’ll most likely find a place for you and your dog at Surfside, but it’s always best to call ahead, especially if you’re looking for a beachfront room. To make reservations call (508) 487-1726 or visit www.surfsideinn.cc.

What To Do With Your Dog No need to worry about your “kids” being bored on this trip. Dogs can tag along on almost any activity you can think of in Provincetown. We highly recommend bringing dogs that are acclimated to crowds and other dogs. There are hoards of people and dogs walking up and down Commercial Street and it’s not unusual for both human and animal to come up and say hello. In fact, there were so many people eager to give Simon and Harvey treats (one man just carried dog treats with him and didn’t even own a dog!) we finally had to refuse.
13
Dog Park If your dog needs a more structured activity and you’re interested in meeting some of the locals, the Pilgrim Bark Park is an obvious source of pride in this fido-friendly community. Supported by volunteers and private donations, this gated, off-leash dog park is adorned with painted benches and dog houses decorated by local talent. But if you’re looking to break free from the dog park routine here are a number of other pooch positive activities for you all to enjoy. Beaches Provincetown is the only town in Cape Cod with off-leash beaches! Dogs are welcome to roam (with their owners within sight and sound control) off-leash from 6am-9am and 6pm-9pm in the summer and at any time in the winter. Harbor Beach can be accessed from Commercial Street and is a pleasant stroll along downtown. The West End beaches are more popular for swimming, just make sure you keep an eye out for signs that tell you where dogs are not allowed. Herring Cove is not only the most popular gay beach, but has miles of dog-friendly beaches and remarkable sunsets. While Race Point Beach, on the Atlantic Ocean side of Provincetown, is great for viewing the sunrise.

Tours Provincetown is rich with history, art, and architecture and guided tours are a great way to learn more. Ptown Tours offers a walking tour that you and your dog are sure to enjoy. Check out the Provincetown Trolley where you and your dog can go for a 40 minute narrated tour of Provincetown. You can pick up the trolley from the front of Town Hall where it passes every half hour. Go to www.provincetowntrolley.com for their hours of operation. Boating If your dog is comfortable off-land you could consider one of the many boating options available. Head to Whalers
Simon enjoying the breeze on an antique wine barrel at Truro Vineyard . Photo by fetchingphoto.com
Hiking If you’re looking for more than just a stroll along Commercial St there are miles of scenic trail to take your dog hiking in Provincetown. You can take a beautiful wooded walk throughout the conservation land surrounding Clapps Pond, located off of Route 6 East. Or try the Beech Forest nature walk, a two mile loop around a pond. For those of you looking for a more intense adventure you can brave the long hike to Long Point Light House. Shopping There are lots of great little shops and galleries all along Commercial St and you’ll find water bowls set out at most doorways. It’s not surprising in this dog-mecca that you’ll be hard-pressed to find a shop that won’t allow your dog to tag along inside. If you’re looking to shop specifically for your pup, check out The Recycled Retriever for eco-friendly pet products or if your dog needs a special treat stop by Paws & Whiskers dog bakery. Also check out: The Black Dog a great place for animal lovers, Friends of Heart where you’ll find pet themed human items, and The Kite Store which gives you more activity ideas!

Or if you’re looking to go further out to sea check out Bay Lady II, a traditional gaff rig schooner, or Dolphin Fleet Whale Watch, to catch a glimpse of the sea life. Keep in mind that you’ll be at sea for up to 4 hours with no rest stops. Please, know your dog’s limitations and do not take a dog on a boat or kayak unless he has been trained for it. Why risk a bad experience when there are so many other activities you both could enjoy?
15 Wine Tasting A great way to spend an afternoon or to cap off your trip is at Truro Vineyards, just outside of Provincetown in North Truro. This small family run vineyard offers local wines for you to try in a beautiful setting and the best part is, pets are welcome. Your dog can accompany you on the tour and can sit outside where there are tables upon tables set up for wine tastings. Tastings are every half hour throughout the day. Check out their website for more information, http://trurovineyardsofcapecod.com. Pet Appreciation Event If you can’t make it to Provincetown this summer, don’t worry, the festivities don’t end there. Provincetown’s annual Pet Appreciation Event takes place the last weekend of September. Canine agility games, benefits, dancers, entertainment and the highlight of the weekend, the Pet Parade down Commercial Street, commences with the Blessing of the Animals. Monies raised benefit the Carrie A. Seaman Animal Shelter, a local no-kill shelter serving lower Cape Cod. Where To Eat With Your Dog Worn out by all the activities? Take a break with your buddy and grab a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants that offer dog-friendly outdoor seating. We stopped for lunch at the Karoo Kafe, a casual eatery offering South African Cuisine. Follow the dog prints down the breezeway to a cozy, quiet nook that offers a reprieve from the busy main street. A bowl of water will be waiting for your dog and, of course, treats will be offered. Order at the counter, and sit in the shade at one of the outdoor tables. The Karoo Kafe is located at 338 Commercial St. www.karookafe.com. If you’re looking to people watch, stop by Bubala’s by the Bay for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Enjoy delicious seafood out on the patio while your dog lounges by your side. Dogs Allowed At The New South Kingstown Dog Park!
T
hree years ago South Kingstown dogs were left with few options when it came to running off-leash. They felt Snoopy’s pain of finding “No Dogs Allowed” signs at every turn. But on May 2, 2010, the South Kingstown Dog Park Association (SKDPA) was proud to unleash the neighborhood dogs and their owners into their very own safe haven at the newly created South Kingstown Dog Park. The sun was shining and the dogs anxiously waiting with their owners as the South Kingstown Dog Park Association cut the leash (yes, an actual leash) at the grand opening of the dog park. SKDPA President Heidi Palmer McNeil fought back tears as she thanked everyone for their outpouring of support. Once all the speeches were complete and everyone was thanked for their efforts, the dogs finally got their moment to run free. It was a community effort that was years in the making.

17 Organizing, petitioning, and a remarkable collaboration between Andy Nota, Director of Administrative Services, Bud McLeod, SKDPA’s founding chairman, and the many active SKDPA members led to the Town Council’s unanimous vote on March 10, 2008, in favor of the authorization of $10,000 in town funds and the designation of the dog park’s current site at the Broad Rock ball fields. It was then up to SKDPA to raise the additional $40,000 needed to complete the project. SKDPA held Doggie Socials, marched in the Veteran’s Day parade, set up booths at Belmont Market, sold t-shirts, buttons and commemorative bricks, and hosted a successful Silent Auction in June 2009. Their efforts paid off by raising almost $35,000 toward the creation of the dog park. By July 2009, it was time to start the excavation and grading. Many people and businesses worked together to bring the plans to fruition. Freshly grown grass for running, a gravel path for walking, trees and fire hydrants for sniffing all enclosed by a picturesque wood fence and secured with wire mesh—it is easy to see all the hard work and care that went into the creation
Minutes after the dogs were “unleashed” into the dog park! photo by fetchingphoto.com of the park. The park is located at 349 Broad Rock Road but the entrance is actually off of St. Dominic Road behind the Broad Rock playing fields. The dog park spans approximately an acre and a half of land and is divided into two sections’ one for large dogs over 30lbs and one for small dogs under 30lbs, each with a double-gated holding area for undoing and re-attaching leashes. SKDPA continues to need donations for adding benches, water fountains, and more bricks. If you would like to purchase an engraved brick or find out more about SKDPA you can visit www.skdogpark.org.

Stephanie Georgia accepts the “Adopt a Shelter Pet Stamp” plaque presented by Rehoboth, MA Postmaster Charles Chadsey
Adopt-A-Pet Stamps Inspire More Giving, Locally!
Every year Charles Chadsey, Postmaster of the Rehoboth, MA Post Office, honors a person or organization that best represents the message behind the Postal Service’s yearly social awareness stamp. This year, with the release of the Animal Rescue: Adopt a Shelter Pet stamps, The Animal Print Magazine was honored with a plaque, accepted by Editor and Founder Stephanie Georgia. The Animal Print was recognized for it’s continued support of local animal shelters and efforts to raise awareness of the need to adopt shelter pets, highlighting 24 local shelter pets in every issue (see page 30). The Adopt a Shelter Pet stamps have inspired many to join in the rescue campaign, including Gloria Duchin Inc, a Rhode Island based designer and manufacturer. Gloria Duchin, Inc. has teamed up with Ellen DeGeneres’ Halo Foundation/natural pet products, and the US Postal Service to promote the Adopt a Shelter Pet stamps and the 1 Million Meal donation program. They have created licensed jewelry, pet accessories and gifts that can be custom engraved on the back and can be purchased at www.adoptapetgifts.com. With each item purchased, Gloria Duchin, Inc will donate $1 to the Halo Pet Foundation. Even if you can’t adopt a pet yourself, these stamps and accessories are a beautiful way of showing your support.

23 {Wandering Tails} by Mike Fink
The CAT
“The Man in the White Sharkskin Suit” by Lucette Lagnado charts the course of a family from Cairo, from the era of King Farouk, to Paris-not the glamorous part--to America. But, for me, it is also the story of a stray cat named “Pouspous.” The writer, as a six year old daughter of an older father who frequents the bars and casinos but likes to take his youngest child everywhere on his boulevardier errands, likes best to stand on the little balcony of their home. She looks out at the busy street while holding, cradling, embracing, her feline friend, her best ally in this world. She feeds him bits and scraps from her own little meals. Yes, Pouspous is a feral friend, who joined the clan on her own, and stayed for the warm welcome from the alley realm into which she had been born. Nevertheless, and tragically, Pouspous is left behind once Nasser comes to power and expels all foreigners--the British colonialists in their crisp uniforms, and the elegant French officers and tourists, and the Jews who had lived amongst them for centuries. The family Lagnado delays departure but in the end packs up, leaving behind their wealth and status, their life style,....and, worst of all for Lucette, their pet cat Pouspous. I have very much enjoyed reading this sad but stylish memoir, but the most poignant part, actually, for me, was the abandonment of the household domestic ally, Pouspous, and the cat commands all my stories about the book. How a different cat makes the journey from Egypt to France. Lucette sees a cat in a cage at the airport and asks, why not ours? She trusts her father, and also her mother, but when they tell her, Pouspous prefers to stay put in her own place, she sort-of believes it and goes along with the hope. But during their lengthy and unhappy sojourn in down-andout Paris, waiting to find out what will become of them and when and where and in what language, she dwells again and again on the fate of Pouspous. Her happiest hours and her deepest nostalgia, involve those moments on that balcony with that cat in her loving arms. Her dream is not France or America but the little terrace and the purring companion, the
pair of them contemplating their present and their future together. Well, this book packs a lot of cynical insights, melancholy reminders, and ironic scenes. Like, how her brothers discover that the dancers from the Folies Bergeres are gorgeous only on stage lit by the glare of the lights, and the fancy bar-girls are only transvestites in heavy make-up: everything is illusion, disappointment, deceit. Like, how her father and mother lose their glamour and their beauty, pride and dignity. But Pouspous recalls the value of our pets. They capture the happy scenes of our comfortable childhood dreamland and they share it with us. Maybe the cat went back to where it came from. Perhaps it found another fate and lived forever. In Eden or Paradise or Heaven it is possible that Lucette will come upon Pouspous after all. And they can look down from that great balcony in the sky upon their private pillow of cloud on our lives on the streets of the world below. Makes a great metaphor. I tell my writing classes, “Put an animal into your story, and it will come to life!” “The Man in the White Sharkskin Suit” is worth reading for a lot of reasons, but put Pouspous at the top of the list of them!

{28Shelter News} American Humane Association Presents Check to Warwick Animal Shelter for Flood Relief
Seniors For Seniors
Jenny’s Hope Rescue is very proud of their “Seniors for Seniors” program. They believe that Human Seniors should have a companion close to their side and that Senior Dogs should have the final chapter in their lives be the best of their lives. “So many pass up on senior dogs in shelters, we do not. We will pull a senior dog, fully vet him and offer him to a Human Senior at NO COST.” If there is someone in your life who qualifies and needs a companion please contact Jenny’s Hope Rescue for more information: www.jennyshoperescue.com. Jenny’s Hope Rescue, Inc. is a 501c3 non-profit organization made up of a small but dedicated and caring group of individuals in Rhode Island, with many contacts and associations with other rescues, all working to rescue animals in urgent need.
On June 9, 2010, The American Humane Association donated $1,000 for repairs to the Warwick Animal Shelter, which was destroyed during a flood that began in early March and had destroyed many businesses and homes in the city by March 31st. The shelter in Warwick was completely submerged under the flood waters, as the nearby river rose to unprecedented levels. The shelter is now under construction and repair. Virtually everything in the shelter was destroyed, except for stainless steel holding cages. The flood waters rose so quickly that shelter staff only had time to get the animals to safety. The community room for cats, records dating back many years and all of their equipment and supplies were destroyed. “We hope that the Warwick Animal Shelter is able to rebuild quickly so they can continue their important work,” said Debrah Schnackenberg, American Humane’s vice president of Animal Protection Programs. “When disasters strike it is wonderful to see the community band together to help rebuild, as we are seeing in Warwick.”
ASPCA Awards $3,000 Grant to the Ocean State Animal Coalition The ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) recently announced a grant of $3,000 to the Ocean State Animal Coalition (OSAC). The grant funding will be used to spread awareness of a low-cost community spay/neuter clinic designed to reduce pet overpopulation in Rhode Island and nearby Massachusetts. OSAC is a consortium of several Rhode Island animal welfare groups, veterinarians and animal control officers, including the Rhode Island Veterinary Medical Association (RIVMA), RIVMA Companion Animal Foundation, Rhode Island Animal Control Officers Association, Potter League for Animals, PawsWatch, Providence Animal Rescue League, Providence Animal Control, and Stand Up for Animals.
The group is in the process of opening the Rhode Island Community Spay/Neuter Clinic in Warwick, R. I., a low-cost spay/neuter clinic modeled after the Humane Alliance in Asheville, N.C. In addition to providing vital spay/neuter surgeries and offering standard vaccines, the organization will also provide transportation for animals from regional shelters, rescue groups, and targeted low income pet owners. “OSAC is dedicated to ensuring that every pet parent who wants to spay or neuter their pet has access to our services regardless of their financial circumstances,” said Executive Director at Ocean State Animal Coalition Liz Skrobisch. “As our clinic will be both affordable and accessible, we are removing the impediments most frequently cited for not neutering a pet.”

Friends of Homeless Animals, Inc - RI • friendsoha@yahoo.com • 401.234.4499
Brandy Alexander is a large, male Boston Terrier, approx. 5-6 years old, and an absolute sweetheart. Recently diagnosed with mild epilepsy he will require an inexpensive medicine twice a day. Brandy is people and dog friendly, but should not be around cats as he is a chaser. He is an energetic and fun-loving boy looking for a good home.
Jimbo is a 5 year old Boston Terrier. He was surrendered because he did not get along with the male dogs in the house, so he will need to be kept away from other males. But this sweet boy will love you forever if you give him a chance. He is good on a leash and can sit, stay, and come when called. He will always be by your side.
Liam is a super sweet Boston Terrier. He is housebroken, loves people, and gets along with cats and other dogs. He is a very laid back dog and at only 15 lbs he does not take up much space. Liam has a leaky heart valve, which does not require medicine at the moment, but he will need someone able to provide for his future medical needs.
Bubba is a very smart 7 year old male Boston Terrier. He doesn’t like the cold and actually sleeps under his blanket at night. He is very lovable, but gets a little nervous around lots of people. He has a history of mild, infrequent seizure activity, which does not require medication at the moment.

Bailey is a 3 year old, spayed, short-haired calico cat. She is very sweet. She is a bit shy when you first meet her, but once she warms up to you, she is very sweet and loyal. She loves to sit in the catwalk and look out the windows.

“Chilli” Chilli Louis passed away on March 17, 2010. He had not been himself for many months, marked by a loss of interest in other dogs at the park, toys, treats and eventually food altogether. He seemed generally confused and quite lethargic. His regular veterinarian, his holistic veterinarian and an internist conducted rounds of chiropractic & acupuncture, blood work, x-rays and finally an MRI. The MRI determined that Chilli had a large brain tumor. This explained many of his symptoms and the rapid decline in his final weeks. Chilli was so full of life, energy and excitement from the time we picked him out of the litter. His personality was so dynamic, and he left a wonderful impression on everyone he encountered. He was happy and healthy for the majority of his life, and those are the times his loved ones need to remember most. Thank you to everyone who knew Chilli and who gave him the love and attention he so deserved (and demanded!). He loved you all.
