Leona Helmsley’s pampered pooch “Trouble,” who inherited $12 million (only part of her fortune) from the real estate mogul, has died at the age of 12.That’s 84 in dog years. Like many Americans, the pampered Maltese retired to Florida in 2007, shortly after Helmsley died. Carl Lekic, the general manager of the Helmsley Sandcastle hotel in Sarasota, cared for her. “Trouble was cremated, and her remains are being privately retained,” spokeswoman Eileen Sullivan said. “The funds held in trust for her care have reverted to The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust for charitable purposes.”

Dear editor, (subject: unbelievable dog story) One of our members owns a Husky puppy, (an older women and her older son). They owned a condo (that normally allowed dogs), but the condo complex said that their Husky was not allowed in the complex; it was on the bad dog insurance list. They loved this dog like a family member, so they actually sold their condo, took a loss, and lived with relatives for a while, until they found a suitable home to raise their husky. Beaches Unfortunately, Newport beaches are off limits to dogs during the summer, but if you head just outside of Newport to Portsmouth, there are a few beach options that allow dogs.

Sandy Point Beach Located along the Sakonnet River, this beach allows dogs after closing at 5 pm. Dogs must be leashed and cleaned up after at all times. At The New Pawtucket Dog Park! The new, highly anticipated Pawtucket dog park recently enjoyed its “leash” cutting ceremony and local residents couldn’t be happier! The Pawtucket Dog Park Committee, lead by chairwoman Sheryl Rennick, won approval from the Pawtucket City Council for the facility, the first of its kind in the city. Also on the committee is Rennicks 10-year-old daughter, Mackenzie, who helped persuade Pawtucket City Council members by letting them know that the first 50 people who donated pet food or other suitable products for the “unleashing” event would receive a ticket for a free ride on the nearby Looff Carousel...who could say no to that! The park is fully fenced, with a bullpen style entry and divides the park into areas for both large dogs (30lbs or more) and small dogs under 30lbs. The dog park will be open daily from dawn to dusk. No attendant will be on duty and users of the dog park will do so at their own risk. The city will provide “Mutt Mitts” for the removal of animal feces.

Tips for A Dog’s21 Day at the Beach

road trip to the beach can be some of the best times for you and your dog. You can’t beat the fresh salt air, and the surf and sand. My shepard mix just loves the off-leash beach in Barrington, RI that we visit often in the summer and I love watching him frolicking and playing to his little hearts content. To make your day go smoothing we would like to share a few helpful tips to make it fun and safe for you and fido:

Follow the Rules: Check with your local beach to see if dogs are allowed. Some beaches with allow your beach buddy to tag along but he or she must be on a leash at all times during the summer in RI, and many will only allow your dog in the early morning or after 5pm. Floating Toys: Bring some fun toys your dog loves to chase like a ball that will float, or a Frisbee.

Fresh Water and Shade: Make sure to set up an umbrella or canopy for a shady rest spot and bring plenty of fresh water so your dog is not tempted to drink sea water, which can make him dog sick or worse, on the way home!

Sunburn: Dogs do sunburn, especially those with short hair, white fur, and pink. Limit your dog’s exposure and apply sunscreen to his ears and nose 30 minutes before going outside and re-apply after swimming just like people should. Continued on page 25

“Netop” is the word Roger Williams took from the Narrangansetts as the term for “Friend.” And it’s also the name of a dog that paints pictures and sells them, through his agent and human companion, Jackie Karch Keach, a long time art teacher in the Providence Public Schools. Netop came to town to have a coffee at the terrace of Seven Stars bakery cafe. He came here for a purpose, not just for a social call. Jackie translated for him. “We visit the animal shelters and use the profits from Netop’s masterpieces to educate people about the rights of our fellow creatures. They suffer as we do, from fear and loneliness, from hunger and pain. They enjoy themselves as we do also, from fun and play and good will and creativity.” I gave Netop a congratulatory pat on the head. His work is not new to me. I have collected some of his pawprints as imprinted upon ceramic times. His paintings, done with a brush held in his jaws (yes, this is true!) sell for about $500.00, half a hundred, and it is all contributed generously to The Cause. Jackie and her supportive librarian husband Bill, and Netop’s own longtime four-legged pal “Ruby” brought me a coffee--in a mug--and we sat among the English sparrows and discussed the plight of pets. “If the human ages and goes to a nursing home that forbids dogs and cats--or birds for that matter-what’s to become of the middle-aged dependent? It’s a special blessing to adopt...not a puppy or kitten, but a mature “netop” that shouldn’t go to a pen, or worse, but to a good and caring home.”

I tend to wax philosophical and grandiose about such matters. “Roger Williams declared that his colony would serve as a “shelter for persons distressed” and maybe his promise was a prediction!” I proclaimed, perhaps a bit pompously.” It just so happened that I had met my guests, or hosts, after a visit to the Roger Williams Memorial on North Main Street. I had read, and learned by heart, the pledge printed at the site of our founder’s first well, at which he named us “Providence”-meaning, after all, that we should provide for one another as the Creator provides for one and all. Maybe he was thinking, subconsciously, of animal rights, which are guaranteed in the Bibles of the world, from Eden to all the Pounds on the planet! So much for the propaganda of Netop. So much for his troop of friends, Ruby, Jackie, and Bill!

Little Stingers: Dogs can get bitten by sea lice and stung by jellyfish. Check on local beach conditions to make sure they will be safe for your dog. Rip Currents: Be careful letting your dog swim in strong tides and know if rip currents have been reported!

Keep Your Dog In Check: Keep an eye on your dog and do

not forget to make him take rest/water breaks. If your dog is out of shape, don’t encourage him to run on the sand. Running on a beach is strenuous exercise, and a dog that is out of shape can easily pull a tendon or ligament.

Smelly Dead Things: Remember that many items washed

ashore, like fishing lines, litter, plant-life, and dead fish, may not be safe for your dog. When he goes exploring, keep a close eye on the objects he finds.

Rinse Off: Ocean water can damage your dog’s fur and coat

and make him smell later, so rinse your dog off at the end of the day; this will also help protect the interior of your car. Save a jug of fresh water just for this!

Reminder

ALWAYS clean up after your dog and do not bury it in the sand. Bring plenty of bags and a scoop to pick up after your dog’s business! The beach is such a fun place to take your dog, and a perfect summertime activity. Be safe and enjoy your day at the beach!

If you’ve ever been to a dog park, you’ve seen them all: the crazy bulldozers, the obnoxious humpers, and the shy loners. If you haven’t been to a dog park, and you love dogs – I encourage you to grab a latte and just watch the action! Even if your dog isn’t exactly “dog park material” or if you don’t even have a dog – go anyway. I find the variety of classmates fascinating.

Best Dressed You know the one. The dog that’s in a different tutu each day of the week? While cute to some, wearing clothes in a multidog arena can really set your pup up to fail. Clothes can mask important body language cues, and can also be easy “latch on” points for obnoxious play. So loose the polos, and get those dogs running commando! You can always redress post-play.

Class Flirt Well, maybe not “flirt” so much as the dog that humps everything that isn’t nailed down. Yeah, that guy. He has no business in a dog park with manners like that. Maybe better named “Most Likely to Instigate a Fight.” Dogs can hump for a variety of reasons, including an attempt to dominate, sexual interest, or overexcitement. Occasional humpty hump is ok, and natural!

But the dog that mounts everything with a pulse (and occasional items without a pulse) is poor mannered and inappropriate in a dog-park. Neutering, early socialization, and proper training will cut down on the humpity harassment.

Drama Queen Oh, the draaaama of it all! Yipe! That dog looked at me funny! Eeek, that dog barked at me. If you’ve ever stepped on the paw of some dogs, one might think you cut it off with a spoon. Mamma, mamma, save me! Drama like this should be ignored, or you will increase the drama, and before you know it the dog will be on the next train to Julliard. That said, savvy owners MUST know when a cry is drama and to be ignored, and when a cry is true fear or pain and must be heeded.

Most Outspoken Scent hound lovers unite! Some dogs just love the sound of their own voice. Keep in mind, yelling at barking simply adds noise to noise – so ignore the barking and reward the quiet. Another option is to put the barking on command (ie speak command) and put the quiet on command. Dogs who love to bark can’t be expected to stop any more than dogs who love to run can be expected to stop. So let them bark it out, but train them to stop when told. Also, keep in mind, loud dog parks are annoying to nearby residents and are a quick way to get them shut down – so tend to your loud lassie and get that barking under wraps.

Class Athlete Faster than a speeding Jack Russell, more aerodynamic than a greyhound! Any dog with a bad case of the zoomies is a riot to watch and belongs at a dog park. Let him kick up the dust and send mud flying. Watch him now, wash him later. There’s nothing more beautiful than seeing a Yorkie get out his yayas or a newfie get goofy. Don’t interfere, exercise is here!

Class Busybody I like to call these guys “The Enforcers.” They’re the ones who rush the gate every time a new dog comes in. I’m not talking about “Nicest” who politely greets every new dog – I mean the one who gets his nose right up in the new guy’s business and is all over them as soon as the gate opens. Or he’s the first one to jump into a fight. This sort of behavior is rude and inappropriate. Keep tabs on your busybody. When you see a new classmate entering the yard, or a skirmish breaking out, get your nose bag out of the way by physically removing him or – preferably – recalling the dog on command. No one likes a busybody!

These guys are exactly who they seem. They want to be left alone to sniff and poo in peace. This is my dog. She occasionally breaks into a pit fit and does the boot scoot where her back end tries to outrun her front end, but for the first 15 minutes or so, she wants to be left alone. I wait outside of the dark park and assess the whole class to make sure there’s no busybodies or flirts in there, before my loner enters. She needs her space, she needs to warm up. If your dog is a loner and doesn’t ever seem to warm up to the classmates, it might be best to visit the park when there are no other dogs or avoid it all together. Like people, not all dogs want company from others of their species. Loners may be best off being, well, loners.
