{Letter From The Editor}

I

t’s still hard for me to believe that we are in the middle of spring with summer quickly approaching. I don’t think I’m alone in feeling like this past winter would never end. Inevitably and thankfully though, the weather has warmed and the snow has melted. I’m even sitting on the beach as I write this, however it’s only 60...but I’ll take it!

We all have reasons why we love the spring and summer, as it’s prime time to get outside and perhaps travel with our pets. This issue (the travel issue) is a lot of fun for me to put together as I try to highlight at least one uber pet-friendly vacation spot. This year, I discovered Camden, ME and fell in love. Camden was unknown to me until I heard about the Camden International Film Festival which takes place every year in September. What I discovered in my research was how pet-friendly this beautiful little seaside town was, especially for the outdoor enthusiast. It didn’t take much convincing (of the dogs) to hop in the car and head north. There are many places to hike, sail or just sit by the seaside...you can read about a few of them on page ten. I hope you’re able to visit and that you find Camden every bit as enchanting as I did. I also look forward to this time of year for the unique events that welcome my dogs tagging along, for example, the farmers market on Hope St. in Providence. Saturday morning walks to the market with my ‘permanent foster’ dog Bodhi have been a great training tool. I’ve watched this people shy dog blossom into a social, happy boy...not so much with other dogs on leash but he’s a work in progress. I’m also excited about the upcoming “Pints For Paws” fundraiser on August 16th to benefit The Providence Animal Rescue League. If you enjoy craft beer and helping homeless animals, this event is for you! If FroYo with your pooch is more your style, then be sure to head over to Jack’s Snacks in Warwick on June 28th for an ice cream social for you and your pooch. One lucky attendee will be selected as our next Curb Stylin’ feature! I hope you have a wonderful and safe summer and don’t forget to Bark The Vote in our 10th Annual Top Dog Readers Choice Survey (see page three for details.) Thank you, Stephanie Georgia editor

Do You Hate Animal Abuse? Then You’ll Love What the FBI Is Doing About It!

Wolf Fossil Suggests Dogs Were Tamed Longer Ago Than We Thought

In the past, animal abuse crimes have been listed under “Group B,” which includes writing bad checks and trespassing, in the category of “All Other Offenses,” which is an aggregate of minor crimes. Under the new guidelines however, abuse against animals will be comparable to more serious crimes, such as kidnapping and homicide. The new animal cruelty category will include four offense types: simple or gross neglect, deliberate abuse or torture, organized abuse (e.g. dog fighting), and sexual abuse against an animal.

Scientists said on Thursday they pieced together the genome of the wolf that lived on Russia’s Taimyr Peninsula and found that it belonged to a population that likely represented the most recent common ancestor between dogs and wolves. Using this genetic information, they estimated that dog domestication occurred between 27,000 and 40,000 years ago. Previous research based on genetic data from modern-day wolves and dogs had estimated that dogs were first domesticated 11,000 to 16,000 years ago.

Starting in 2016, the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) will reclassify animal abuse as a “Group A” felony in its National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS), which means that it will be a top-tier federal crime.

Genetic information from a 35,000-year-old wolf bone found below a frozen cliff in Siberia is shedding new light on humankind’s long relationship with dogs, showing canine domestication may have occurred earlier than previously thought. Today’s dogs, from the Chihuahua to the Great Dane, are believed to have descended from wild wolves domesticated by humans in prehistoric times.

The research was published in the journal Current Biology.

LOW COST, HIGH QUALITY Veterinary Care arrives in the East Bay By Katenna Jones (from left to right) Lily Santiago, Dr. Johnna Corwin Lowel and Brenna Grioux.

R

ita C. Falaguerra has been involved in companion animal welfare and education for over 20 years. In 2006, she formed Cat Adoption Team Services, or CATS, a nonprofit designed to help Rhode Island’s cats. She always noticed that affordable veterinary care was lacking in the East Bay of Rhode Island. She says: “There are many people who have been priced out of veterinary care due to high prices and lack of enough money. I wanted to reach as many pet owners as possible and not let the pets suffer for the lack of funds.” Even though Rita had been retired for six years, she decided to address the issue.

for their animals regardless of financial hard times. The clinic offers most services any other clinic offers (more coming soon!), but all are quality services and offered at prices that are very, very reasonable. All patients are welcome, whether they are owned or shelter pets, in financial distress, or from the East Bay area. As with business, making money is required to keep their doors open, however, Rita and a group of volunteers do not get paid, thereby keeping prices low. Although low-cost, patients can trust that the clinic is certainly staffed by qualified professionals, including Medical Director, Dr. Johnna Lowell.

In April 2015, Rita partnered CATS with East Bay Veterinary Care, who’s goal was to make sure as many companion animal owners would have access to low cost, but high quality, care

RI Pet Legislation Highlights Anti-BSL Bill Breed discriminatory legislation (BSL) are laws that target specific breeds of dogs, most commonly pit bull type dogs. As of 2013, BSL is illegal in Rhode Island. House Bill 8500 is sponsored by Representatives Barros, Tobon, Abney, Coughlin, and Johnston and proposes that towns who had BSL in place prior to 2013 can reinstate their breed specific bans and restrictions. Most notable, if passed, pit bull type dogs would be entirely banned from the city of Pawtucket. Dog lovers are encouraged to contact RI Representatives and urge them to NOT support this bill.

Discover Dog-Friendly

Camden

with Bodhi! Nestled between the beautiful Maine coastline and the Camden Hills, this seaside town is one of the few in the world to earn the motto “where the mountains meet the sea.” Boasting 5,500+ acres of state park, including 30 miles of hiking and walking trails, as well as the largest number of windjammers (or schooners) in the US, many of which love to have dogs aboard, Camden, ME is the active dog lovers dream vacation spot!

What To Do Boating

Schooner Ride With Your Dog! Sailing the Penobscot Bay is an amazing way to view the beautiful scenery surrounding Camden, ME which includes marine wildlife, lighthouses, mansions and more. The majority of the day sails are pet-friendly and we hopped aboard the The Schooner Olad for a sunset sail with Bodhi. The crew was incredibly friendly and clearly loved dogs. Bodhi settled into my lap once we got going and it was truly an amazing experience to sail the bay with my dog right along side. One tip I

Bodhi hanging out on the grounds of The Lodge At Camden Hills

wanted to mention was to be sure to sit in the in the cockpit with large dogs. We did not and things did get a little hairy at points! If you prefer to sit deck side with your big dog, you’ll want to think about where your pup can get traction for his paws as the ship tacks into the wind. Next time, I plan to bring along a yoga mat which may have been perfect to help him to stay comfortable. We also loved that you can bring along a cooler full of snacks, adult beverages and water for your dog. The Schooner Olad • www.maineschooners.com

The trail gradually follows a brook for the first half-mile, after which the path takes a somewhat steeper climb, culminating at a plateau. The trail traverses open ledges at the top of the cliff, leading to a notable destination, where a large steel cross commemorates Elenora French, who fell to her death here in 1862 at 11 years of age. The Lodge at Camden Hills I can’t say enough about how wonderful the Lodge at Camden Hills is! Not only are the rooms beautiful (see photo above) but most accommodations have a deck overlooking the huge, lush green yard where your dog is welcome to run and frolic (please keep your dog under control and be respectful to other guests). You will also enjoy views of Penobscot Bay and Mount Battie directly behind them...and did I mention the two sided fireplace and jacuzzi tub?! Upon arrival to our room, we discovered a note addressed to Bodhi from the two resident pups Oslo and Phil. It explained what was also waiting for him in the room...a doggie bed (they asked that he stay off the people furniture), bowls, treats and they even had a doggie towel in case he went for a Continued on page 17.

Spring is finally here and summer is just around the corner!!! While we are all happy to see the sun and flowers, this can be a problem time for your furry family member. Some helpful tips to watch out for:

4. Remember that gardens can be hazardous too. Many

fertilizers and insecticides can contain ingredients that may not hurt the garden but are harmful to your pet. Keep all chemicals stored out of reach. Tip: Marigolds provide an excellent safe and natural deterrent for your garden.

5. S pring and summer brings blooming of many

poisonous plants. Easter lilies, rhododendrons, ferns, iris, tulips and azaleas are just some. The ASPCA’s website has an excellent list of plants. This is important not just for your dog or cat but also your bunnies and tortoises.

6. N o one can forget it is also allergy season. Regardless of the beauty of spring, pets can have allergies too. If you notice any signs please call your veterinarian.

7. Finally don’t forget about the bugs!! This time of

year brings fleas, ticks, as well as heartworm with mosquitos and intestinal parasites. Discuss the right regimen for your pet with your veterinarian.

Have fun this Spring and Summer but make sure to keep your two legged and four legged family safe!!

pet and person.

W

hile some dogs are tail-wagging happy to ride in the car, others pant, pace and even become physically ill during a car trip. Anxious dogs

are often left at home, but that’s not always an option; dogs have places they need to go, like the vet’s office or the groomer’s. If your dog is terrified of the car, careful planning and patient training can literally teach him to “relax and enjoy the ride.” Here are my favorite tactics for building canine confidence in the car.

Teach Your Dog to Love the Car Create a safe, comfortable resting area for your dog. A crate is one of the safest ways for your dog to travel; it helps protect him in an accident and helps minimize driver distractions. The crate can also be a dog’s refuge. Start by making your dog’s crate comfortable. The angle of the car seat can make a crate tilt backward, creating an unstable surface; make the area where your dog will be lying down as flat as possible; you can purchase a car leveler or create your own by placing rolled towels under a crate. Some dogs also do better with a breathable towel placed over the crate to block their view while others prefer to see what’s passing by outside. Get your dog familiar with the car. Many dogs become anxious even before the engine starts, so it’s important to break the car ride down piece by piece. Start by loading

your dog in the car and giving him a tasty treat for getting into his special area — then let him out immediately. Once he’s comfortable getting in the car, start the engine while your dog is near the car (but not inside it). Reward your dog and then turn the engine off. Next, have your dog get into the car and start the engine, but don’t move out of park; while your dog is in the car, give him a reward. When your dog is comfortable in the car, pull out of the garage, but immediately return. If your dog remains calm with this short drive, try a trip around the block. Pair each trip with a reward to alleviate your dog’s anxiety and create a positive association with the car. If your dog suffers from motion sickness in the car, consider replacing food treats with praise as a reward. Arrange for your pup to visit some rewarding destinations. For many dogs, the fear of car trips is really a fear of the destination — they often end somewhere the dog doesn’t want to be, like the grooming facility or the veterinarian’s office. To alleviate your dog’s stress, make the majority of car rides end somewhere fun. Drive to a nearby park for a game of fetch, to a hiking trail for a long walk, or to the dog park for a play date with some canine friends. Address specific triggers. Certain sights and sounds may scare your dog when he’s in the car. My parents’ dog, Continued on page 26.

Delta Adds Pet Tracking to Select Flights

New gadget relays real time data to people traveling with their pups. Flying with pets in cargo is nerve-wracking, no matter how short the trip or how perfect the weather conditions. While fees have gone up in recent years, there haven’t been a lot of improvements in how large pets fly. Delta Airlines recently added a service to help give traveling pet parents peace of mind. A new gadget, available for $50 per flight from ten U.S. airports, is attached to crates to provide real time data on the surrounding temperature, what position the animal is in, and the kennel orientation. If the temperature rises above 85 degrees Fahrenheit, the device will send an alert to Delta’s call center. The statistics can also be checked through a web site. The major limitation so far is that the system can only send alerts before and after a flight because restrictions on cellular communication while airborne. Still, the device is useful since many mishaps with temperature control happen on the tarmac. However, it’s clear that this tracking service should be included for all pets traveling in cargo. The gadget doesn’t appear to have GPS capability, but given the stories of pets lost on the runway, this would be a good feature for the next version. Delta’s gadget isn’t perfect by a long shot, but lets hope that this is the beginning of a trend to make flying safer with pets.

Road Trip Strategies Once your dog is comfortable riding in the car, there are several ways to keep him calm during a road trip. Start with a walk. Exercise decreases stress and increases feel-good hormones to help your pet better tolerate the car trip. Time walks to happen 10 to 20 minutes before you load the car and hit the road. Use an anti-anxiety wrap. The gentle pressure of the Thundershirt, for example, can help calm many dogs in a natural, non-invasive manner.

If your dog suffers from motion sickness or extreme anxiety, veterinary assistance is essential. Talk with your veterinarian about possible options, including medication.

{Wandering Tails} by Mike Fink

the pigeons of peace and poise Gertrude Stein and James Thurber disagreed about pigeons. Stein wrote, “Pigeons on the grass, alas” and Thurber countered and mocked her phrase with “Pigeons have no power to evoke emotion, not even with red, white and blue ribbons!” At school’s closing, RISD has to deal with the campus dovecote: somebody has to care enough to keep our flock safe and sound and protected from hawks throughout the summer months, starting with the 4th of July. My student, Evan Friedriksen, and my alum friend, Mateo Ward, brought a group of varicolored pigeons to The Highlands assisted living facility behind the former Arena on North Main Street, and also behind my back yard. Between two worlds. It wasn’t the first time we staged this event. It was a come-back routine tradition, instigated by the students themselves. It started right after lunch: the senior citizens gathered on the terrace, facing a newly restored garden. Birdfeeders attracted goldfinches, even hummingbirds, to the scene. While awaiting the arrival of the feathered friends, I presumed to present a lecture on the unique nature of pigeons. I winged it. “They have warm feet. They feed their young a kind of milk. They fly over every city in the world. Their homing instinct makes them symbols of memory itself!” I was nervous until the students showed up, smiling and bearing their gifts of plumage and pilgrimage---the doves of peace and poise. Of eternal return. Mateo, who established the bird world set up opposite the University Club parking lot on Waterman Street hill, high up on a narrow strip of land that includes an herb garden and a goldfish pond, told the crowd the history of his project. He had chalked profiles of the Picasso logo of Noah’s dove all over the RISD neighborhood. Then, he had to organize a club to take over after his graduation.

“I think we should take the mascots to each person here, individually, and ask questions or offer answers to their questions.” He said this and did precisely what he proposed. “We’re going to release them. I promise you they will fly right back to their coop, their home.” (Actually, a pair of the pigeons perched on the roof over the terrace, just contemplating whether, perhaps, they might decide to stay and set up a new bird world right here at The Highlands.) “What does the word ‘pigeon’ mean? one resident asked. Somebody from the staff googled his inquiry and found the ancient lineage of the word “pigeon,” adding a scholarly touch to the rendezvous, while others served glasses of cold water all round. It was really a grand reception. Another resident, who came to Providence from Spain, where she was born, and from France, where she grew up, spoke to Mateo in Spanish, to me in French, and to her neighbors in English. Like our guests and our love-doves, we were from everywhere. I came from just over the fence, and the students later dropped by at our cobblestone lane for a tour of my garden. Altogether, this proved to be a successful and charming Saturday afternoon, intimate and poetic.

I’m Dylan, nice to meet you! I am famous at EGAPL for the cute red spot around my eye and my otherwise white coat. I am a medium-sized Terrier mix and I’m only about one year-old. I like to have fun with other dogs, run around in the sunshine, and get belly rubs for all my hard work playing!

I’m Tangerine, hi! I got my name because I’m one of the “Fruit Loops” puppies, and I am black with tan markings. I’m a seven month-old hound mix and I was rescued from a high-kill shelter in the South. I’m a pretty fun girl and I’m a bit of a ham, too! I like playing with people and other dogs.my new home.

Hi, I’m Charm! I’m a beautiful chocolate lab/Plotthound mix and I’m about two years-old. I came here with my puppies, the Sugar and Spice Pups. I’m a sweet, energetic girl and I’m great with people, but because I have a high prey drive, I would be best in a home with no cats, small dogs, or other small animals.

I’m Chester, it’s a pleasure! I’m a very handsome cream-colored Pomeranian/ Chihuahua mix with captivating eyes. I’m a small guy with a curly coat and Chihuahua ears. I came to EGAPL because my owners were moving. Now I find myself looking for another home at seven years-old. I’m social and promise to make you smile every day!

She prefers to be cuddled up close, even if she needs a little reassurance and patience for her to come close at first.

Tillie has had it rough and was rescued from the second largest dogfighting case in history. She has several health issues but all are manageable and her health care is covered for the rest of her life. Think you might be worthy of this beautiful little survivor?

Young Boomer is loads of fun! This friendly and social guy is a current resident of Scituate Animal Shelter and a participant in Handsome Dan’s Rescue Shelter Dog Enrichment Program where he attends weekly training classes at Outbound Hounds.

Swansea Animal Shelter 68 Stevens Rd. Swansea MA

Bella is an 8yr old Jack Russell Terrier. She is a nice pup who is in need of a somewhat quiet adult home. Bella would also do best being the only pet in thex home. She can be a bit pushy and will need a home that understands how to manage that. We have been managing it at the shelter, so it can be done. She does walk nicely on the leash.

Onyx is a 3 yr old American Bulldog mix. He has a great disposition and a sweet personality but he does have alot of energy. He would do best in a home without small children simply because of his size. We feel Onyx would do well with most other dogs but that would depend on the personality of the dog he is introduced to.

Meet Francis, This lil old guy came to us underweight and very frail. His digestive tract has been very sensitive do to malnourishment and his age, but with some special food and meds our staff and volunteers have made great progress, and he’s starting to eat much better. He’s been more alert and a bit more active.

Razz has been with us for approximately 2 months, her and her siblings came to us near Christmas time and were very scared. With daily socialization from our volunteers, she has started to enjoy being held and cuddled. She is timid, but friendly, and will make a wonderful pet for someone who has the patience to further draw her out of her shell.

33 } {In Memory Isis was two years old when we adopted her on Earth Day 2003. She was supposed to be a foster dog, but that only lasted a few hours before we realized we had to keep her. All the way up to the day she passed, Isis’ first love was food! Our goofy and complicated “little-big” girl with the affectionate nickname of LunchBox, had multiple surgeries for Mast Cell cancer and eventually had to have her spleen removed, but through it all….she still enjoyed her cookies and every last morsel of food she could get her paws on. Cancer and Dementia took our girl from us at the ripe ol’ age of 15. We were blessed to have been able to spend as much time with her as we did.

We will always miss you Muffin. Love Mom, Dad and Brisco.
