I
’m fairly certain I’m not alone in my readiness to say goodbye to winter and hello to spring. It’s not necessarily because of the snow and cold, but when you have two foster dogs mixed in with your own animals and no yard...well, you can do that math. A lot of very cold and often slippery walks in the neighborhood. What I have come to realize is that I NEED a yard! For those of you lucky enough to have one, and are perhaps looking for a rather shy but loving dog, let me introduce you to my foster dog Bobo. Bobo has the eyes of an old soul and I already know that I will never forget this one. Sadly, his shyness is not such a good fit with my lifestyle, ie: people in and out, lots of trips, events, living in the city— but wow, is he special. You can read a bit more about him on page 30 and maybe, just maybe, he could be the right dog for you?
I also wanted to mention my niece who recently lost her beloved hampster Stevie in a tragic accident. I want her to know that I’m so sorry and that I understand how sad she is. Losing your best friend is difficult, and I would like to share with her the quote that helped me when I lost my best friend, which is “Don’t Cry Because It’s Over, Smile Because It Happened” by Dr. Seuss. You can read the touching note she wrote to Stevie in the memorial section on page 33. This was a note that she wrote privately, and quietly put into the tiny casket in which he will be buried. It’s clear that he was loved, and their special bond reminds me that no matter how large or small an animal is, when you love them they are the world to you. I hope you enjoy our new issue which includes a number of beautiful photos by Traer Scott, some of which will appear in her upcoming book Newborn Puppies. You will also find the touching story of Liam. Liam has been all over the news lately and the wonderful folks at Handsome Dan’s Rescue invited the Animal Print over to meet him and share his story. We of course fell in love with this goofy, sweet boy and wish him a very speedy recovery. Thank You, Stephanie Georgia editor

Animal Testing Of Cosmetics Banned In European Union The European Coalition to End Animal Experiments has something to celebrate this winter: after years (23 to be exact) of effort, the group has succeeded in banning the use of animals in cosmetics testing in all member countries of the European Union. As of March 11, all personal care products, from high-end to drugstore brands, will be subject to the rules, which means that final products cannot be tested on animals and nor can any of a given products’ ingredients.

Hasbro said the decision to change the piece was sparked by chatter on Facebook where the game has more than ten million fans. Dear Editor, Adequate living for animals is an extremely important issue in Rhode Island, as well as every other state in the US. Laws are so laxing, that many animals are living in squalor & not given adequate housing, especially in extreme conditions. The standards in our very own state must be raised and in doing so, we are hoping other states will follow our example. The enclosed link will explain our goals and what each individual can do to help accomplish these changes. It is with great appreciation that you will find this issue important enough to publish.

Teaching your cat to come when called is not only handy but could save his life. If he escapes outside, you can call him back home. You can also call him when inside the house to make sure he’s accounted for before leaving the house, or to gather him up for a trip to the veterinarian. If he’s an indoor and outdoor cat, you can call him inside before you leave the house. You can call him to walk with you when your hands are full and the door is open. You can just call him to you when you want to visit with him. Even if he’s an outdoor cat, you can call him home if a storm or other danger is looming.
Teach Your Cat to Come on Command
Your cat probably already comes when called — only he comes to the call of the electric can opener or the ping of dry cat food hitting his bowl. It’s just one step to go from that to coming to the call of your voice or to a whistle — whistles aren’t just for dogs!
Adopt A Bunny! (401) 623-1340
www.sweetbinks.org
Just as the sound of a can opener signals good food is on its way, your come command should also signal that good food comes to those who come. You should teach him that when called, it’s not just good food, but extra wonderful food. Experiment to see what your cat really likes — tuna, cat treats, sardines — and reserve it only for those times you’ve called.
9 Although you could just play a recording of the can opener, that would be inconvenient, so instead, decide how you will call your cat. Use something you don’t otherwise say during the day. “Here, kitty, kitty, kitty” is a favorite, or you could use a whistle. Don’t, however, simply use the cat’s name. His name is just to get his attention; it should be followed by a cue to actually come. Everyone in the house should use the same way of calling. A deaf cat can be trained to come to vibrations, such as thumping your foot on the floor, or to visual cues, such as a light flicking on and off.
How Food Can Aid in Training
If your cat already comes running to the sound of the can opener or the shaking of the treat bag, you can let that aid in training. Call your cat immediately before making the sound she already comes to. Your call must come before the sound — not at the same time or after — because in that way your call will quickly come to predict the other sound and food. Practice having your cat run to you in the kitchen, or wherever she usually eats, at first. Then go to other rooms and have her come to you there, feeding her as soon as she reaches you. Be sure to stroke and praise her as well. Once she’s coming, don’t take her training for granted. Whenever she comes, reward her. If you train her when she’s already hungry, you’ll make even faster progress. If your cat spends time outside, you can also call her to the house and reward her.
The Best Time to Train Your Kitten
The best time to teach your cat to come when called is when he’s a young kitten, but no matter how old he is, he can still learn. Always make coming to you rewarding. Even if you’ve hunted and called for the past hour, only to see your cat finally meander out yawning from under the bed, grit your teeth and reward him. If you want your cat to come so you can cut her nails or give her medicine, go find her rather than call him. True, sometimes you have to call him for things that aren’t on the top of her fun things to do list, but try to keep those to a minimum. One day your cat’s life may depend on her coming to you without hesitation — don’t give him reason to wonder if it’s worth coming or not.

uppies of many different breeds and mixes, all between one and twenty-one days old, are beautifully showcased in this 128 page full color coffee table book. Newborn Puppies progresses chronologically beginning with a photo of a one day old Rottweiler mix puppy held in the palm of a woman’s hand, then a two day old litter and so on. By the end of the book, the twenty-one day old brood of fluffy, flaxen Golden Retrievers actually looks like the puppies we are used to seeing, as opposed to the helpless, sightless little newbies we are shown at the beginning. to unwanted strays dumped at animal shelters), what you will notice are the profound similarities that all dogs at this stage of life share. A new mom herself, Traer feels that her personal life while making Newborn Puppies strongly paralled that of her subjects. “This book was made during the months when I was either pregnant with my daughter or adjust-
ing to life with a newborn, so the protectiveness, exhaustion and devotion of the mother dogs really resonated with me.” Surprised at the similarities between the human and canine maternal experience, she adds, “I came to realize that all mammals probably share a very similar experience when it comes to motherhood, the difference, of course is that our offspring don’t leave the nest for 18 years.” Continued on page 14.

Unlike Traer’s first three books, Newborn Puppies is not “cause-oriented” per se, but she still manages to incorporate a strong anti-puppy mill message both in the introductory essay and in the “Puppy Mill Q and A”, three full pages of facts and figures and about puppy mills found at the back of the book. Traer says her motto for this book is “come for the cuteness, leave with unexpected knowledge”. And cuteness certainly abounds. {Health} Human Foods That Are Dangerous for Dogs and Cats
20
Ruffin’ Wranglers dog excursions Visit our website at www.RuffinWranglers.com Contact Blythe Penna 401-419-4318 Email: Blythe@RuffinWranglers.com
A number of human foods are dangerous to pets. Many of these foods may seem tasty to our pets but can prove deadly if eaten. It can be very tempting to offer pets food from the table, but pets should not be given human food unless recommended by your veterinarian.
Xylitol
Xylitol is an artificial sweetener found in products such as gum, candy, mints, toothpaste, and mouthwash. Xylitol is harmful to dogs because it causes a sudden release of insulin in the body that leads to hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Xylitol can also cause liver damage in dogs. Within 30 minutes after eating, the dog may vomit, be lethargic (tired), and/or be uncoordinated. However, some signs of toxicity can also be delayed for hours or even for a few days. Xylitol toxicity in dogs can be fatal if untreated. It is unknown whether Xylitol is toxic to cats.
Chocolate, Coffee, and Caffeine
Style Unleashed Pet Boutique and Salon
Chocolate contains theobromine, a chemical that is toxic to dogs in large enough quantities. Different types of chocolate contain different amounts of theobromine and caffeine. For example, dark chocolate and baking chocolate contain more of these compounds than milk chocolate does, so a dog would need to eat more milk chocolate in order to become ill. However, even a few ounces of chocolate can be enough to cause illness in a small dog, so no amount or type of chocolate should be considered “safe” for a dog to eat. Chocolate toxicity can cause vomiting, diarrhea, rapid or irregular heart rate, restlessness, muscle tremors, and seizures. Death can occur within 24 hours of ingestion.
Grapes and Raisins
20%
Off Any One Item in the Store* *Excludes Dog and Cat Food
Grapes and raisins can cause acute (sudden) kidney failure in cats and dogs. It is unknown what the toxic agent is in these fruits. However, clinical signs can occur within 24 hours of eating and include vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy (tiredness). Other signs of illness relate to the eventual shutdown of kidney functioning.
Avocados 232 Waseca Avenue | Barrington | RI 401.245.2600 | www.styleunleashedri.com
The avocado tree, it’s leaves, pits, fruit, and plant bark are likely all toxic. Clinical signs in dogs and cats include vomiting and diarrhea.
Garlic and Onions
Garlic and onions contain chemicals that damage red blood cells in cats and dogs. Affected red blood cells can rupture or lose their ability to carry oxygen effectively. Cooking these foods does not reduce their potential toxicity. Fresh, cooked, and/or powdered garlic and/or onions are commonly found in baby food, which is sometimes given to animals when they are sick, so be sure to read food labels carefully.
Macadamia Nuts
Macadamia nuts are common in candies and chocolates. The mechanism of macadamia nut toxicity is not well understood, but clinical signs in dogs include depression, weakness, vomiting, tremors, joint pain, and pale gums. Clinical signs can occur within 12 hours after eating. In some cases, signs can resolve without treatment in 24 to 48 hours, but patient monitoring is strongly recommended.
Prevention
The best way to prevent this is to keep all food items in closed cabinets or in areas that are inaccessible to pets. y now you may have heard about Liam. His story is as heart wrenching as it is heartwarming, and the ending still remains to be seen. For those of you who have not yet heard, let me get you up to speed. On January 31st, it was just another Thursday for a Westport Massachusetts homeowner, until they noticed something in their garage. It was a dog. It was a pit bull. It was a big pit bull. And it was covered in blood. Such a sight might strike terror into the hearts of some who have heard the stories about “those
W
dogs.” How they can’t be trusted. How they will kill anyone and anything if given the chance. A blood soaked, large dog, hiding in a garage? Of course he was covered in blood – he had probably just mauled something, right? Or perhaps he had displeased an owner who subsequently disposed of him like so much worthless trash after losing a fight. I mean, what other use could a dog like that possibly have? It might even have been easy for someone to arrive on the scene and shoot this dangerous beast that posed such a threat to public safety.
Lucky for this particular pit bull, the one to arrive on the scene was Animal Control Officer Donna Lambert, who knew instantly what she was dealing with: the dog she had been tracking for several weeks around Rt 195. With the skill and experience of a trained professional, Donna quickly assessed the situation and saw a severely injured pet that posed no threat, and she immediately transported him to Acoaxet Veterinary Clinic. It was eminently apparent that, no, this dog was never used for fighting and had not mauled a thing. He had no indicative scarring around his face and front legs and – other than his obvious injuries – was actually in pretty decent shape considering

he had been a stray for several weeks. He was thin, but not emaciated, and his coat was thick and clean. This was no fighting dog – used, abused, and abandoned. This was no dangerous stray wandering around causing mayhem and destruction. This was someone’s pet. A pet, as it would turn out, knew hand-signals for sit and stay, walked well on a leash, was housetrained, polite, and well-behaved around children and other dogs. This was a pet. And just one year old he was lying alone in a garage on a cold January day, for an unknown period of time (likely days), in incredible pain, fighting for his life. He was bleeding profusely from his chest and right front leg where, as Xrays revealed, he had sustained multiple leg fractures and multiple gunshot wounds. In fact, there were four to seven entry points. Now, this is the point in the story where the speculations begin. Was his brown coat mistaken for a deer, and shot by a hunter? Possibly. Deer hunt-
ing season is long since over, however crow, bobcat, coyote, fox, raccoon, opossum, cottontail, hare, and squirrel seasons all fit the time frame. But for a hunter to land four to seven shots in such a small, moving target is very unlikely. Not to mention, the absolute disregard for safety that would be required to mistakenly pull the trigger so many times at a shorthaired tan pit bull, which is clearly not any of the aforementioned species. But it’s possible. Was the dog lost and hungry, looking for food in someone’s garbage or even raiding chicken coops? Perhaps someone felt threatened by a stray dog and Continued on page 26.

took aim. Possibly. However, upon discussion with hand and shotgun skilled sportsmen, landing multiple shots to an otherwise healthy dog in such a small target is virtually impossible. Unless the dog was held down, or unless the dog was already injured to the point he could not run. Was he held down? Was he already injured? We may never know, and frankly speculation is nothing more than a negative waste of time. There are professionals that are highly trained in figuring things like this out, assessing where negligence, cruelty, and innocent mistakes intersect – and where they are separate. And they are on the case. Cruelty Investigators from the Animal Rescue League of Boston are tracking down the events that led up to this, and we have to trust in them to get to the bottom of this if it’s at all possible. And a reward is being offered for information. So let’s leave the speculation to the professionals, shall we? The rest of us focus our positive, healing energy on the good parts of this story. So what happened next to this boy, you may wonder? After being stabilized by the good folks at Acoaxet Veterinary Clinic, the dog was driven to an unassuming house in Cranston Rhode Island, which just
so happens to be the headquarters of Handsome Dan’s Rescue for pit bull type dogs. HDR is named after Founder and CCO (Chief Canine Officer) Dan, one of the many amazing Vicktory dogs, rescued from the notorious Michael Vick dog fighting operation. Dan is the face of an organization run by Heather Gutshall and Mark Stoutzenberger, who magically find spare time outside of their work as owners and operators of Outbound Hounds. Together, they head up a team of dedicated and tireless volunteers who rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome area pit bull type dogs. They raise thousands of dollars in donations from loving fans and dedicated supporters: 100% of which goes directly to save the lives of and care for needy dogs like Liam; as well as to find Liams great foster family, Amber and Mathew McNulty, who were willing to open their home to him for as long as he would need. When arrangements were being made for when the dog would come Amber’s home (after his state-required five-day hold had concluded), the discussion of a name came up. Amber joked: “Well, I’m not letting [daughter] Darian name him! She’ll pick something ridiculous like Liam, after the boy in the boy band One Direction!” There was a pause, as they realized St.
Patrick’s Day was close by. It fit! And it stuck. Liam. Liam’s future was uncertain during the initial days of his recovery, and only time would tell whether his leg could be saved. He showed significant wound damage, and the horrendous breaks did not make for a good prognosis. And as they waited, pain killers helped, but didn’t stop Liam from suddenly screaming out in pain from time to time. Agonizing daily wound cleanings ripped tears from his caretaker’s eyes, and more screams from Liam himself. But through it all, he never showed aggression. Not once. He would bury his giant head, and soft-ball sized check muscles in the embrace of the humans as they comforted him and cared for him. He soaked up their love, and together they waited. And then came the test that showed the unexpected: Liam’s nerves had begun to repair themselves! He began to use his front leg, and even play! It wasn’t long before it became a struggle to protect the injured leg from the goofy boy it was attached too, as he tried jump with joy and bounce on toys. Today, Liam is recovering in his foster home, but he has a long road ahead of him. Physical therapy, hydro therapy, Continued on page 30.

Foster Feature
Saving Bobo Bobo is a one year old Boxer/Shepherd mix who is the most gentle, calm and sweet soul you will ever meet. Not only is he beautiful but he loves to play with other dogs, roll in the snow, wants nothing more than to put his little head on your lap when you’re sitting on the couch and is as quiet as a church mouse! He has been with a rescue in Arkansas for his entire life with a good deal of that time spent in a kennel and sadly was not well socialized with people as a puppy. As a result he is a bit fearful of new people. His RI foster mom just could bear to see this sweet forgotten boy spend anymore time alone and took him into her home. The remarkable thing about Bobo is that while under socialized with people (until he trusts you and then he’s a big lug) - he is the perfect house guest who is not pushy, loud or destructive. His foster mom just can’t say enough about what a joy he is to be around. We have started to notice that he has more confidence when with another friendly dog who can show him the ropes, especially when he can get a good outdoor run and play session in. While he may be calm in the house, he’s young and needs his exercise to stay that way! More of what we love about Bobo is that he rides wonderfully in the car and loves car rides. He’s great in his crate and has recently learned to run into it when it’s dinner time. He is still learning to walk on the leash but is not a puller. He just needs someone to love, who will love him back and understand that he needs very slow introduction to new situations and people and in return you will have one amazing, loving and laid back dog. He is looking for a calm home that will help him blossom into a more confidant dog and one that understands that while at first he may be nervous of you, in a few days he will love you like you’ve never been loved before! If you’re looking for a dog that you can take to crowded locations and busy streets, he may not be the guy for you. But if you have time to introduce him to a new life and give him calm and consistant training and you love a dog who is a complete mush in the house but active outdoors, then he might be right for you. Because of his shyness, we are looking for a home with a fenced yard that he can safely frolic in but with a person who wants to work on his specific fear issue with training. Bobo is currently being fostered in RI with a small dog who he treats gently and another young dog that he loves to play with. Bobo is up to date on his shots, neutered and healthy. For more info about Bobo, please contact his foster mom at sgeorgiablue@gmail.com This page was made possible through the generosity of:

Sweet Binks Rabbit Rescue, Inc. – Foster, RI • 401.623.1340 • sweetbinks@verizon.net
Barney was born at Sweet Binks when his mother (Sophie) was left outside a shelter one night, very pregnant. His mom and his 5 siblings have all been adopted and now he waits for a great home. Barney is a little shy at first but warms up quickly. He is about 5 months old, neutered and good with his litter box. He is about 4 lbs. and a really cute.
Kristina was a stray for a long time and she was finally trapped and came to Sweet Binks. We estimate Kristina to be about 1 year old or so. She is now spayed, great hay eater, good with her litter box and a friendly, calm bun. Great first bun and maybe a good bonding candidate too.
LuvNHugs is an extremely loving, friendly, out-going, wonderful rabbit. He is estimated to be about 1 year old and is neutered and doing well with his litter box. LuvNHugs will require a special commitment to his grooming needs and it is something an adopter will need to learn to do and we can teach you how.
Roscoe and his 3 brothers and 3 sisters were born at Sweet Binks when their mom was caught as a stray (Rosie - adopted). Roscoe is the only one left to be adopted and he is about 1 year old now, neutered and good with his litter box. He is fun, active and just need some time acclimating to a new home.

Greta is a wonderful, approx. 9 year old, female, black lab weighing 60 lbs. Although Greta is a senior Labbie, don’t let that grey face fool you as she still has some energy and enjoys going for her leisurely walks. Greta is looking for a new home as her owner passed away and she no longer has someone to care for her. She is very mellow and easy going.
Max is a big Boxer mix that is ready to come home with you! He is just over 1 yr. old and 90 lbs. Typical happy go lucky and friendly boxer. Max loves car rides and is well behaved. He is best friends with any dog he meets, male or female. Max is gentle with children but with most being at his level they have to watch out for the side of the tongue
Brownie is either a Beagle in a Chocolate Lab costume or a Chocolate Lab trapped in a Beagle size body. We are not sure. She is stocky with short legs, only 35 pounds and is about 3 1/2 years old. Brownie is a very sweet, very gentle and very affectionate girl who loves to be with people and loves to play but settles in for a good snuggle too.
Timmy is a 10 month 10 lb. little mutt puppy. He is sweet and fun and always has me laughing at his puppy antics. He loves to play. He will play with me, with the other dogs, with a cat, independently with a toy or even an empty bottle or yogurt container… this boy is not picky. He is a lover of his person and will snuggle big time.

Bentley is a handsome 3 1/2 year old DSH Tabby male. He came to the RISPCA because his owners were moving and could not take him with them. Bentley does not do very well in new situations, when he first came to us he would hiss at everyone and charge at his cage door. He has since calmed down.
Claire is a 7 year old Domestic Short Haired, Tabby and White female. She came to the RISPCA on 1/18/2013 because her owners were moving and could not take her with them. She is a playful and affectionate girl, but does not like other cats or dogs. We are unsure how she would be with children.
Mia is a beautiful 2 year old orange and white tabby. She was brought to the RISPCA on 1/23/2013 because she is terrified of the dogs her owner have. She is quiet, affectionate and a little shy but warms up quickly. She does not like other cats, is afraid of dogs and we recommend she goes to an adult only home.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Looking For Skilled Pet Photography Volunteers A new group is forming to offer free pet photography to terminally ill animals. Many people going through the illness and death of their pet often regret not having many photos with their best friends and we are forming a non-profit to help folks in this position to have something beautiful to look back on and help them grieve. Again, we are at the very beginning stages of planning and are looking to see if there is any interest from local photographers. Please contact Fetching Photography to join our mailing list for more info, as the organization begins to form. fetch@fetchingphoto.com

Make This Years Easter Bunny A Chocolate ONE! YUM!
We see them in pet stores in the weeks before Easter – cute little live Easter bunnies. What many of us don’t see is the sudden influx of bunnies being abandoned at shelters once Easter is over. But Rhode Island based Sweet Binks Rabbit Rescue, knows the problem all too well. Unfortunately, most bunnies that come to Sweet Binks were former “Easter bunnies”, or “gifts” to children and end up in one of our local shelters or abandoned outside or forgotten in a hutch. Folks see the cute little young bunny for sale around Easter at pet stores or fairs in the summer by breeders, and buy the bunny on impulse without first learning about them, their care, or their requirements, or not taking into consideration that a bunny is a long term commitment just like a cat or dog. Later, when that cute little bunny reaches sexual maturity, and folks do not know to spay/neuter or are unwilling to spend $200+ to spay/ neuter, the rabbit is taken to a shelter or worse, set free. Many end up outside in a hutch just living a sad and forgotten life, and most are looking for a new home by “back to school” time. Most domestic
rabbits don’t make it past their first year with a family before being discarded, because a good decision wasn’t made beforehand about a bunny as a “child’s” pet. Parents need to understand that the rabbit will be their responsibilty (not the kids) for the next 8 to 10 years. Sadly, some people just turn the bunny loose, thinking that the bunny will fend for itself. This does not happen, the bunny will either fall to a predator, starve, or find some other untimely demise. It is the most inhumane thing to do, and also illegal. Domestic rabbits do not have the survival skills of their undomesticated cousins and do not last long in the “wild”. We urge you to make this years Easter bunny chocolate! For more information please visit www.sweetbinks.org
