[R]URBAN: Rural + Urban
Bachelor of Science in Architecture- Semester 07, December 2013
Typology Residential apartment Site setting Klebang, Malacca Concept note In his book Cities on the Move (1970), Arnold Toynbee name the first chapter ‘the Traditional City and the Present Urban Explosion’ which talks about the novel problems of urban life. The limited ability of a city to provide itself with food produced within its own bounds, congestion of the trafic now that the population has become mobile, physical fatigue, and the psychological time which are a ‘commuter’s’ occupational trials, among others. Fast forward four decades later, urban population are still dealing with the same dilemma if not greater. The idea of a mash-up between rural and urban is to revive the cultural and historical component of Malacca itself as design mechanism towards resolving these urban problems of city living. The need to instill meaning and substance of the old community living - the kampung lifestyle into the modern day living.

Typology Institutional Site setting Bukit Jelutong, Selangor Concept note A proposal for The International School of Bukit Jelutong (ISBJ) adopts the triangulation mantra of coherence- place, use and form. The form reflects the place, the place is just so, and the use reflects this and that. The understanding of coherence means- when everything refers to everything else and it is impossible to remove a single thing without destroying the whole place. Adopting the American Elementary School syllabus, the design approach is based on two things- concept and scenario. The building must coexist with the site nature and space imbued with sublime natural essence. As for the planning principles, four spatial quadrants has been identified as necessaryadministration block, academic block, ancillary or facilities and services which includes parking spaces. Multiple learning settings are clustered so that individuals and group have easy and relatively similar access range of pedagogical settings.

Design statement Embara is a classical Malay word for wayfaring. Embara is an approach to reconstruct the relationship of the city and the human subject. As a concept, wayfaring is used as a strategy to enhance the user experience in both solids and voids, public and private spaces. The two main street that runs parallel in the site will act as ‘eureka’ on the ground level, sprawling out its energy horizontally and vertically throughout the urban blocks. Wayfarer are practitioners of the city, for the city is made to be walked. A city is a language, a repository of possibilities, and walking is the act of speaking that language. Just as language limits what can be said, architecture limits where one can walk, but the wayfarer invents other ways to go.
