INTRODUCTION

The hospitality industry is of great importance to the economy of a country. Hotels have evolved a lot through the ages and reached the current state due to the shifting economic and social trends. The modern hotel is a descendant from the coach inn and posting stations which evolved out of the monastic inn and caravansary during the middle ages and the mansione of ancient times all catering to the travel modes of their era. Todays hotels are glamourized with towering atriums, glass-enclosed elevators, exotic areas for relaxation, and glittering meeting spaces. Designing a hotel is a daunting task as it takes in a lot of factors and parameters. The shifting economic and social trends pose great threat to a hotel. In a hotel you are both leasing out to the public every night and catering to their every need. Therefore, rather than a monument or mere rental space, a hotel must provide a total living environment, with all the needed multicomplex functions and activities. Three Parcels of land of about 81 hac area located in the vicinity of the IGI airport constitutes the DELHI AEROCITY (DA). These parcels are to be developed in 3 different phases. According to the masterplan, the first phase consists of the L1 (a) which is the hospitality district. The Hospitality District, involves commercial development in 62.5 acres of land adjoining NH-8. This hospitality district primarily aims to create an integrated development with the world class airport facilities and ambience for passengers in and around the airport. It is a series of hotels and retail shops serving millions of tourist passengers and staff.

HYPOTHESIS

This thesis intends to learn and understand the current hotel design and planning principles and to come up with a design sloution that provides a total living environment in the urban context to the occupants still focusing on the public realm of the context which provides a higher economic and social growth to the city.

What are the factors and design methodologies involved in architecture for zero gravity and non-earthly conditions? For centuries people have been trying to fly out into outer space to find and learn about human habitable space. Aeronautical advancements are going on and soon one day we might have to move out as the earth is growing old and people populating and polluting the space. If so, where are we going to live in? Will the same concepts be applicable there? Are we architects prepared to build in outer space?
