Each year, the company donates 50% of its profits to Access Youth Outreach Services, as well, owner, Paul MacDonald, volunteers as a youth worker to help youth in the Tri-Cities community. This summer, Ethical Waste Services raised almost $15,000 for Access Youth Outreach Services through the 50 Grinds for Access fundraiser. The fundraiser consisted of Paul running the grouse grind 50 times over the summer. Friends and family were invited to participate and donate to help Paul to the finish line. Ethical Waste Services has a team of 10 employees from the Tri-Cities area. It works with PLEA and Access to hire marginalized youth, giving them a sense of purpose while providing valuable work experience. As well, Paul mentors students in the YELL (Youth Entrepreneur Leadership Launchpad) program. Through Lawyers West, Jason has been able to provide practicum experience for the legal administrative assistant program, work experience for 1 high school student from Gleneagle Secondary, and a summer law student to gain valuable practical experience before moving onto an articling position. Offering experience in these positions is often unheard of in smaller law firms such as Lawyers West, but Jason believes in the importance of helping those looking to break into the profession. This was highlighted specifically during the past year as Phoenix was drawn to step up during the Glen Street apartment fire, at the Syrian Refugees first Eid Al-Fitr in Canada and for a local person who couldn’t afford her wheelchair. Rocky Point Ice Cream Rocky Point Ice Cream started out in 1997 as a summer ice cream shop operating out of a tiny kiosk. It’s ice cream was provided by a small batch operator in Vancouver and together they would come up with new flavours; including the famous K9 Doggie Ice Cream. When the opportunity for Rocky Point Ice Cream to expand the building and operation presented itself the owners saw it as an opportunity to make their own small-batch ice cream. Owners Jamie and Yvette Cuthbert then attended the University of Guelph to learn how to make ice cream completely from scratch. They are passionate about their business, product, and community, and thoroughly enjoy getting to know the customers. Because of their hands-on approach to a small business, the owners do get to know their customers, and appreciate every second of it. The couple always had a vision of making their own ice cream as to have complete control over the quality of the product and to be able to work with local businesses for sourcing of products. They have always been committed to supporting the community and do so by employing local students, providing fundraising opportunities, donations, and volunteer work. Rocky Point Ice Cream has grown into a popular gathering place for locals, a destination for tourists, and has expanded its reach by the introduction of roving ice cream trucks, Scooper and Rocky. The company’s dedication to quality is endless and Jamie and Yvette are always striving to perfect their recipes, improve the company’s impact on the environment, and source more ingredients locally.
