CHAIRS MESSAGE

. GILLIAN KIRK . It is my absolute pleasure to welcome you to the annual Tri-Cities Chamber of Commerce Gala and Business Excellence Awards. This event is one of my favourites of the year, not just because it is a chance to get dressed up and rub elbows with the who’s who of our wonderful community but also an opporunity to recognize the excellence in our business community. Tonight we will announce the winners of our Business Excellence Awards. These awards recognize the people and organizations in the Tri-Cities that demonstrate leadership, success and community conscience. On behalf of the 2016 Tri-Cities Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to all of the nominees. You have been recognized because of the hard work you do every day throughout the year and I hope that you take some time tonight to savour the moment and feel proud of what you have accomplished. A huge thank you to our presenting sponsor, Douglas College and to all of the other sponsors, without whom this event would not be the success that it is. To our Gala Committee and Volunteers — you have my deepest thanks and appreciation for all your time and effort. And to our talented, hard-working and extraordinary Chamber staff, you are the engine of our organization and I have such admiration for you and the hard work you do to serve our members. Thank you is not enough. Tonight is a celebration of business and our community. Enjoy the food and drink and all the fun! And be sure to stay after the awards and join me on the dance floor!

. KEN DOTY . Sandpiper Signs

From pin striping cars by hand in high school in the 1950s, to screen printing in the 1960s, to owning his own business in the 1980s, Ken’s enthusiasm for art has remained a big part of his life. During his first job as a screen printer, his boss asked him how he liked screen printing and with a gust of confidence Ken exclaimed, “This is the most boring job I’ve ever had in my life.” When asked what he’d rather be doing, Ken replied, “To be frank, I want your job.” For the past 47 years, Ken has worked in the sign business – from a one man screen printing shop to the well established Sandpiper Signs that most of you are familiar with today. For those of you who know Ken, he may seem like a bear at times, but it’s this aggressive passion that keeps Sandpiper Signs a leader in the Tri-Cities community. Ken has built a respected reputation on quality workmanship and is greatly committed to his customers. Ken’s obsession with perfection has paid off, as seen with his many awards, including the Tri-Cities Chamber of Commerce 2011 Small Business of the Year award. Ken has a great admiration and appreciation for the people in the Tri-Cities. There’s a long list of Tri-Cities charities that Ken and Sandpiper have supported over the years, including ACCESS Youth Outreach Services, Eagle Ridge Hospital Foundation, SHARE, Children’s Organ Transplant, Saving the Girls and Crossroads Hospice Society.

On top of giving his profits to charity, Paul volunteers as a youth worker, spends countless hours on the Outreach Bus and sits on ACCESS Youth’s Board of Directors. Ethical Waste hires ‘at-risk’ youth to provide work experience, financial stability and valuable life skills. These opportunities have seen great results as Paul has witnessed youth clean up their act in an effort to work harder on the job.
