Hostelling International Slovenia Hostelling International Slovenia (HI Slovenia) is the only national representative of Slovenia in the International Youth Hostel Federation (Hostelling International – HI). HI is a non-governmental and non-profit organization active in about 90 countries in the world. The organization works closely together with UNESCO (United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization), WTO (World Tourism Organization) and other important international organization – also it was proclaimed the sixth largest organization that offers overnighting. With 4 million members it is one of the largest youth organizations in the world and is the only network of youth hostels with about 4.000 objects for spending the night, 1.5 million beds and 30-40 overnight stays annually. HI has high standards for youth hostels, based on the treatment of the guests, security, cleanliness and privacy. But it is not its only role. Since it was established in 1932 it encourages young people for better intercultural understanding through informal education and peace, global friendship and environmentalism. The international organization, with a strong support of its national members, it offers interaction among youth of various nationalities and cultures, exchange of experience, getting to know their peers and after all themselves. For this the organization has international programs for youth, above all the ones with lesser chances, through which we spread the mission of Hostelling International, which remained the same since 1932: To promote the education of all young people of all nations, but especially young people of limited means, by encouraging in them a greater knowledge, love and care of the countryside and an appreciation of the cultural values of towns and cities in all parts of the world, and as ancillary thereto, to provide hostels or other accommodation in which there shall be no distinctions of race, nationality, colour, religion, sex, class or political opinions and thereby to develop a better understanding of their fellow men, both at home and abroad. PZS, with its 48 hostels around Slovenia, ensures safe, budget friendly and quality boarding for all types of groups. This includes the educational field trips with various themes (history, art or language courses) as well as extracurricular activities for schools, students, sporting and other groups – or simply friends who want a joint active holiday. All Slovenian hostels meet the international demands, with most of them having special offers for the groups: • Private rooms for group leaders and drivers • Bus parking • Study rooms, game rooms and joint areas • Ensuring full meals and possible lunch packets • Personal that understands the needs of any group Hostels are placed as well in the urban centres as in nature, but all can be perfect base for discovering the country side. Do you want active holidays with rafting, skiing and hiking? Maybe something more relaxing as sightseeing of cultural and historical sights? Or would you just spoil yourself in the thermal and natural baths? PZS as part of Hostelling International is the organization to contact for any of these great experiences in a budget friendly way.

Local sights and attractions Bled Castle On a mighty rock rising 130 metres above the glacier lake Bled is the symbol of Bled and Slovenia – the Bled castle. The image of the castle above the lake with a romantic island is the feature of Bled, that has through the years became the trademark recognisable in Slovenian and world-wide. The view terrace of the castle offers a beautiful sight of the lake with the island, the countryside with Lesce and Radovljica nearby and the view of the Alps (Karavanke and Julijske Alpe). The Bled Island The Bled island is a small island in the middle of Lake Bled with an interesting baroque church of St. Mary’s assumption. You can reach the island with a traditional Bled boat called pletna, which is rowed by a kramar – or you can rent a boat and row for yourself. Pletna is famous for Bled and the history of this water transport dates back to the 12th century. It is a wooden boat some two metres wide and seven metres long. Today these boats are made by the boating society of Mlina. The Bled island was a settlement already in the stone age, but only as a temporary fishing settlement. In the 17th century the famous church was built on the island, with a 99 step tall stone stairs leading to the chapel of the Mother of the god. The island is also known for ringing the bell. According to the legend, ringing the bell should fulfil the wishes of the one who rings it. On the island you can also see the gothic lighthouse, near the eastern part of the church and the statue of Mary Magdalene. In winter time you can visit the island on foot, if it’s cold enough and the lake freezes over. The island is a beautiful and romantic place for a dream wedding.

Local sights and attractions Vintgar gorge The gorge of Blejski Vintgar is usually open between late April and October (but it depends on the weather conditions) from 8am until 7pm. The gorge was discovered in 1891 by Benedikt Lergetporer (photograph) and Jakob Žumer (a cartographer and mayor of Gorjane). The gorge was opened for tourists in 1893 and the paths have been renovated several times. The gorge is 1,6km long and a beautifully greenish river of Radovna flows through it, with its pools, waterfalls and echoing white water rapids. The walls around it reach up to 250 metres and at places it is protected with nets, so the rocks would not fall down. The paths lead us across the wooden bridges called Žumrove galerije. You’ll need good hiking shoes, for the path can be slippery and thus dangerous. The gorge is under the railroad track connecting Jesenice with Most na Soči. At the end there’s a mighty waterfall slap Šum, with about 15 metres of falling water, and is one of few river waterfalls in Slovenia. You can also see the accumulation for the hydro plant Vintgar. At the entrance or at the waterfall you can get refreshments. You can return the same way you came, or over Home to Sveta Katarina, with a historical church and a great view of Karavanke and the surroundings of Bled. The walk, including taking pictures is about two and half hours long. The gorge is definitely worth a visit and it’s a great way to cool down in warm summer days, for the air inside is nice and fresh.

Straža Straža is a smaller Hill at Bled, which you can reach by a walking path or by cable cart. On top is an adrenalin park Bled, a Mountain cabin on Straža, Riklij’s exercise path, as well as the great view of Lake Bled, Bled Castle, Jelovica and Stol. The park is made up of five different adventure trials with 65 different climbing elements. It’s appropriate for families, birthdays, team building, school groups and similar. At the cabin you can get a taste of great traditional cuisine such as beef stew with fried polenta, jota, barbecued ribs with sauerkraut and buckteeth polenta, cake from Pehtran, the picnic plate and other. During summer they offer adrenalin sleighing and during winter it’s a ski resort. Summer sleighing takes place on the world cup ski slope from the top of the cable cart. In winters the slope is lit and it’s well equipped with snow cannons. They also organize skiing school for beginners and you can borrow the gear. There is also a safe and free parking right next to the cable cart.

Local sights and attractions Pokljuka Pokljuka is the starting point of many mountain trails into the Julian Alps. At the edges of the forests and ancient mountains they still keep cattle and a traveller can get a fresh glass of buttermilk, cottage cheese, real mountain butter or cheese as an energy boost. Each mountain is different, but all have typical wooden houses, covered with skodle (traditional roof tiles) and fit perfectly in the natural surroundings. Charcoal making is an old tradition that has been brought back as a tourist attraction, reviving this trade from the not so distant 19th century, when charcoal was the main source of energy in metal mills. At winters Pokljuka is covered by a thick cover of snow, but the roads from Bled and Bohinj are open and keep Pokljuka reachable. There are ski pulls at the hotel next to the guesthouse Jelka and are completing the offer of the cross country track at Viševnik, which run through beautiful pine tree woods. In wintertime Pokljuka hosts biathlon championship races (even the world cup).

The cave under Babji zob On northwest border of Jelovica there’s a tall bedrock above the river of Sava Bohinjka and the villages of Bohinjska Bela and Kupljenik that featurs a sharp, tall pointy rock piercing the sky, called Babji zob (Hag’s tooth). Near it, there’s an entrance to the cave, at the elevation of 1008m and with about 300m of caverns that are decorated with cave structures. The treasured stalactites are the so called helektiti, which have the spiral shape and are rare anywhere in Slovenia. In the company of guides, you can also visit it. It’s a great opportunity for a day trip and the visit to the cave lasts about an hour. Together with the trip up to the cave, a little rest and your way back down, it will take you some three and a half hours. We suggest mountaineer gear to the visitors (hiking shoes, warm clothing and drink).

Hostelling International Slovenia

Local sights and attractions Triglav national park (TNP) The Triglav national park (TNP) is the only national park in Slovena and is named after Triglav, which is in the heart of it, reaching 2864m, being the tallest mountain peak in Slovenia. The origin of the name is slightly uncertain, for some claim it’s due to the typical view of the mountain, which seems like three heads of the peak (Triglav = threeheaded). But it is more likely it is named after the ancient Slavic bog Triglav, who was believed to reside there, back in the days when Slovene ancestors still worshiped their pagan gods. Either way, it is a symbol of being Slovene and is also on the official coat of arms and the flag. TNP stretches out to the northwest right to the border with Italy and comes really close to the border with Austria and includes the southeaster part of the Alpine massive. It almost completely covers the whole eastern part of Julian Alps. It has 880 square kilometres, which takes up some 4% of the Slovenian territory. It’s among the oldest European national parks and first became a protected area in 1924, when the Alpine protection park was set up. Their mission is to preserve nature, but they also to scientific and research work.
