Hostelling International Slovenia Hostelling International Slovenia (HI Slovenia) is the only national representative of Slovenia in the International Youth Hostel Federation (Hostelling International – HI). HI is a non-governmental and non-profit organization active in about 90 countries in the world. The organization works closely together with UNESCO (United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization), WTO (World Tourism Organization) and other important international organization – also it was proclaimed the sixth largest organization that offers overnighting. With 4 million members it is one of the largest youth organizations in the world and is the only network of youth hostels with about 4.000 objects for spending the night, 1.5 million beds and 30-40 overnight stays annually. HI has high standards for youth hostels, based on the treatment of the guests, security, cleanliness and privacy. But it is not its only role. Since it was established in 1932 it encourages young people for better intercultural understanding through informal education and peace, global friendship and environmentalism. The international organization, with a strong support of its national members, it offers interaction among youth of various nationalities and cultures, exchange of experience, getting to know their peers and after all themselves. For this the organization has international programs for youth, above all the ones with lesser chances, through which we spread the mission of Hostelling International, which remained the same since 1932: To promote the education of all young people of all nations, but especially young people of limited means, by encouraging in them a greater knowledge, love and care of the countryside and an appreciation of the cultural values of towns and cities in all parts of the world, and as ancillary thereto, to provide hostels or other accommodation in which there shall be no distinctions of race, nationality, colour, religion, sex, class or political opinions and thereby to develop a better understanding of their fellow men, both at home and abroad. PZS, with its 48 hostels around Slovenia, ensures safe, budget friendly and quality boarding for all types of groups. This includes the educational field trips with various themes (history, art or language courses) as well as extracurricular activities for schools, students, sporting and other groups – or simply friends who want a joint active holiday. All Slovenian hostels meet the international demands, with most of them having special offers for the groups: • Private rooms for group leaders and drivers • Bus parking • Study rooms, game rooms and joint areas • Ensuring full meals and possible lunch packets • Personal that understands the needs of any group Hostels are placed as well in the urban centres as in nature, but all can be perfect base for discovering the country side. Do you want active holidays with rafting, skiing and hiking? Maybe something more relaxing as sightseeing of cultural and historical sights? Or would you just spoil yourself in the thermal and natural baths? PZS as part of Hostelling International is the organization to contact for any of these great experiences in a budget friendly way.

Local sights and attractions Lake Bohinj Lake Bohinj is the largest natural permanent lake in Slovenia, measuring 318 ha. It is 4100 m long, 1200 m wide and 45 m deep. Located in a glacial hollow, the lake comprises over 100 million cubic metres of water. There are 65 algae species, 8 mollusc species and 5 fish species that live in the lake. The main tributary is the Savica that springs at the waterfall under the rock wall of Komarča. Lake water that flows in from numerous other sources is restored three times per year. Water level rises 2 - 3 m at heavy rainfall. In summer, the temperature of the water rises to 22 oC; in winter, Bohinj Lake often freezes. Oplen’s, a Bohinj farmhouse Oplen’s, a Bohinj farmhouse, is built as a longhouse, uniting dwelling and farm rooms together in the same builiding. The house is built of stone and wood. The exit to the barn is by crossing a bridge, built along the living area, which is an architectural peculiarity of the Bohinj valley.
Church of St. John Church of St. John is dedicated to St. John the Baptist, a patron saint to whom old churches beside lakes or on the banks of rivers were often dedicated. It is built on a West-East orientation and is surrounded by an old cemetery wall with two entrances. On the oil painting by Franz Kurz von Goldenstein (1807-1878), we can still see a number of graves and the shingle roof on the wall, which is still preserved today. As the church lies at a very scenic location by the bridge, overlooking the Bohinj lake, the church has become a symbol of Bohinj. Mostnica Gorge and Devil’s bridge At the end of the Voje Valley, the Mostnica River spurts out of the rocks as a triple waterfall, known as the Mostnica Waterfall. On its lover limestone grounds, the river has cut out more than 2 km long channels that are the deepest at the Devil’s Bridge (20 m) and quite narrow at some places (1m). What is especially worth mentioning is a rock that the water carved in the shape of an elephant.

Local sights and attractions Studor village with its hayracks The village of Studor is made up of a dense cluster of houses. It is set close to the foot of the cumulous mountain of Studor in the Upper Bohinj Valley (Zgornja bohinjska dolina). Farmers had few fields in the narrow valley; they made their living by breeding pasture cattle and forestry. The estate of the Studors reaches to Tosc, Velo Polje and Triglav, and it comprises the estates on Komna and under Bogatin and Vogel. In the summer the cattle were gradually moved and grazed on the mountain pastures of Blato, Blatce, Tosc, Velo Polje, Jezero, Jezerce, Laz, Viševnik, Dedno Polje, Govnjač, Ovčarija, Razor, Na Kraju, Ukanc and Vogar. In the summer time they would cut and prepare the hay for the long winter months from the steep meadows and the meadows in the valley. For larger batches of hay and for drying in the ever-rainy Bohinj, one of the largest groups of hayracks in Slovenia was set up below the village, a group of toplars (double hayracks), called »stogi« by the locals. The hayracks are not Baroquely luxurious like the toplars from the Dolenjska region, but they are masterfully crafted. Between the hayracks and the villages of the valley there are walking and cycling paths. Savica waterfall The waters from the lakes, located in the valley of waters from the Triglav Lakes Valley, burst out to daylight at the wall rock of Komarča under the name of Savica. Spurting from a karst cavern, the water falls in the shape of an A-lettered 2-meter waterfall 78 m deep. The waterfall has always attracted attention of numerous people, among them also the natural scientist Baltashar Hacquet and Austrian archduke Ivan. France Prešeren, the most famous Slovene poet, chose the waterfall for his epic poem entitled Krst pri Savici (Christening at Savica).
Rafting We offer you an interesting challenge with the outsider rafts. Outsider rafts are designed for two or three persons, so the participants have to steer the raft by themselves. A guide paddles by their side in a kayak and shows them the way. That is the most exciting trip for everyone who likes to enjoy the natural wonders of the river and conquer the rapids in stable rafts.
