Hostelling International Slovenia Hostelling International Slovenia (HI Slovenia) is the only national representative of Slovenia in the International Youth Hostel Federation (Hostelling International – HI). HI is a non-governmental and non-profit organization active in about 90 countries in the world. The organization works closely together with UNESCO (United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization), WTO (World Tourism Organization) and other important international organization – also it was proclaimed the sixth largest organization that offers overnighting. With 4 million members it is one of the largest youth organizations in the world and is the only network of youth hostels with about 4.000 objects for spending the night, 1.5 million beds and 30-40 overnight stays annually. HI has high standards for youth hostels, based on the treatment of the guests, security, cleanliness and privacy. But it is not its only role. Since it was established in 1932 it encourages young people for better intercultural understanding through informal education and peace, global friendship and environmentalism. The international organization, with a strong support of its national members, it offers interaction among youth of various nationalities and cultures, exchange of experience, getting to know their peers and after all themselves. For this the organization has international programs for youth, above all the ones with lesser chances, through which we spread the mission of Hostelling International, which remained the same since 1932: To promote the education of all young people of all nations, but especially young people of limited means, by encouraging in them a greater knowledge, love and care of the countryside and an appreciation of the cultural values of towns and cities in all parts of the world, and as ancillary thereto, to provide hostels or other accommodation in which there shall be no distinctions of race, nationality, colour, religion, sex, class or political opinions and thereby to develop a better understanding of their fellow men, both at home and abroad. PZS, with more than 40 hostels around Slovenia, ensures safe, budget friendly and quality boarding for all types of groups. This includes the educational field trips with various themes (history, art or language courses) as well as extracurricular activities for schools, students, sporting and other groups – or simply friends who want a joint active holiday. All Slovenian hostels meet the international demands, with most of them having special offers for the groups: • Private rooms for group leaders and drivers • Bus parking • Study rooms, game rooms and joint areas • Ensuring full meals and possible lunch packets • Personal that understands the needs of any group Hostels are placed as well in the urban centres as in nature, but all can be perfect base for discovering the country side. Poetovio Hostel is located in the building of the Student’s home Ptuj in a quiet environment in the oldest town in Slovenia. It has its own parking and free parking for buses is located nearby. Train and bus stations are within a walking distance (no more than 1 km) as is the city centre. Hostel’s capacity is 60 beds. Rooms are double and triple with shared sanitation blocks (2 toilets, 2 showers, 4 sinks) for four or six rooms. Hostel offers a kitchenette, living room, trim cabinet, table tennis, table football and free internet access. We have a kitchen with a large dining area, where visitors can order breakfast, lunch and dinner on weekdays, larger groups can also order meals on weekends. Fresh bed linen and towels are included in the price. In case of a longer stay, we also offer laundry service. Hostel is very suitable to accommodate larger groups (up to 60 people; during the school holidays capacity increases). Group leaders and chauffeurs get a discount. Larger groups are also offered a lower price.

The surroundings of the Hostel Poetovio Hostel is just a quick walk away from the old city centre. Ptuj is known for its very rich history, cultural monuments, it is a treasure trove of wine (the vines have been growing on our sunny slopes for more than two thousand years) and food (delicious cheeses and cheese spreads of all kinds, intoxicating fragrances bread - rye, buckwheat and walnut, black with fried onions, white with raisins .... delicious homemade sausages and meat in lard, dark green freshly pressed pumpkin seed oil or tempting chocolate with pumpkin seeds or prunes, sweet honey and home-made gingerbread, pear or apple slices and scented marmalades, fruit breads, cakes, gibanica ...). Ptuj is also focused on well-being (beneficial effects of water, massages, warm climate, sunshine, playing golf, horse riding, cycling, hiking, driving with a boat on the lake...).

Local sights and attractions Old City centre The centre of the small and peaceful old town of Ptuj is »Slovenski trg«, where the city tower is the first thing that catches your eye. Next to the tower is interesting Orpheus monument. It was made in 2nd century as the tomb stone for the city mayor, but in the Middle Ages it also served as a pillory. Around the corner, we will pass the Town Hall and come to Minorite Monastery, which can be seen only by prior arrangement. The castle hill offers a beautiful view of the castle, where the Regional Museum Ptuj is located. The Dominican monastery, a beautiful cloister is located beneath the castle hill.
Carnival Ptuj spa is the right place for all who want to restore or enhance health, since the Ptuj Thermal vents help to alleviate rheumatic diseases, bone and cartilage diseases, and also have beneficial effects in certain neurological disorders. Beneficial effects of thermal waters from Ptuj spa were known to the Romans, who founded Poetovio - today Ptuj, the oldest Slovenian town. Ptuj spa still breathes the spirit of Romans – their offer is based on consumption, indulgence, and play. Luxurious wellness centre offers a variety of themed baths and massages.

Local sights and attractions The Ptuj castle A mighty fortress has a strategically important position from which it is possible to control the surroundings far and wide, was inviting for people to settle there. Archaeological findings have shown that the first settlers took to the Castle Hill in the Stone Age or the beginning of the Copper Age (about 2100-1750 BC). Remains of pottery and stone axes from this period are on display in the archaeological collections of the Regional Museum Ptuj. Even the Romans built a minor fort and a basilica on the Castle hill. The castle today reflects the image, formed by centuries of reconstruction.

Golf course Just a short walk from the old town lies a golf course, which is really something special due to its diverse terrain and numerous water obstacles. It spreads over 50 hectares and is known for its greens and water. They have managed to combine the greens with the old town and authentic fauna and flora of the natural surroundings of Ptuj. The course offers a great relaxation to modern man, who is seeking refuge from the stresses of everyday life in nature.
