Hostelling International Slovenia Hostelling International Slovenia (HI Slovenia) is the only national representative of Slovenia in the International Youth Hostel Federation (Hostelling International – HI). HI is a non-governmental and non-profit organization active in about 90 countries in the world. The organization works closely together with UNESCO (United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization), WTO (World Tourism Organization) and other important international organization – also it was proclaimed the sixth largest organization that offers overnighting. With 4 million members it is one of the largest youth organizations in the world and is the only network of youth hostels with about 4.000 objects for spending the night, 1.5 million beds and 30-40 overnight stays annually. HI has high standards for youth hostels, based on the treatment of the guests, security, cleanliness and privacy. But it is not its only role. Since it was established in 1932 it encourages young people for better intercultural understanding through informal education and peace, global friendship and environmentalism. The international organization, with a strong support of its national members, it offers interaction among youth of various nationalities and cultures, exchange of experience, getting to know their peers and after all themselves. For this the organization has international programs for youth, above all the ones with lesser chances, through which we spread the mission of Hostelling International, which remained the same since 1932: To promote the education of all young people of all nations, but especially young people of limited means, by encouraging in them a greater knowledge, love and care of the countryside and an appreciation of the cultural values of towns and cities in all parts of the world, and as ancillary thereto, to provide hostels or other accommodation in which there shall be no distinctions of race, nationality, colour, religion, sex, class or political opinions and thereby to develop a better understanding of their fellow men, both at home and abroad. HI Slovenia, with more than 40 hostels around Slovenia, ensures safe, budget friendly and quality boarding for all types of groups. This includes the educational field trips with various themes (history, art or language courses) as well as extracurricular activities for schools, students, sporting and other groups – or simply friends who want a joint active holiday. All Slovenian hostels meet the international demands, with most of them having special offers for the groups: • Private rooms for group leaders and drivers • Bus parking • Study rooms, game rooms and joint areas • Ensuring full meals and possible lunch packets • Personal that understands the needs of any group Hostels are placed as well in the urban centres as in nature, but all can be perfect base for discovering the country side. Do you want active holidays with rafting, skiing and hiking? Maybe something more relaxing as sightseeing of cultural and historical sights? Or would you just spoil yourself in the thermal and natural baths? PZS as part of Hostelling International is the organization to contact for any of these great experiences in a budget friendly way.

Local sights and attractions Piran The old coastal harbour of Piran is at the tip of the peninsula, which parts the bays of Strunjan and Piran. The scientists believe the name Piran originates from the old Celtic word bior-dun, meaning the settlement on the hill. But the younger generation connects the name with ancient Greek word pyr – fire. They claim the town used to burn a bonfire serving as a lighthouse for ships sailing to the nearby Greek colony Aegida – modern day city of Koper. The town kept its medieval charm with narrow streets and houses closely grouped together, that raise from the shore to the top of the ridge in a typical stairway manner, creating a typical Mediterranean charm. The biggest attractions of Piran are: Tartini square, Venetian house, Tartini house, the square of the First of May, the Punta, the town wall, the church of St. George, the aquarium, the museum of underwater activates, the museum of sea-shells… Portorož Sea, wind, salt, Mediterranean smells, palms, roses, evergreen plants, relaxation, fun and party are words that best describe Portorož, the coastal town in the middle of Europe. The mixture of many cultures, music, nature, gastronomy and a rich past all make this an unforgettable setting to forget our everyday cares in. It’s a great place to take a load off and simply relax. Relaxing strolls on the shore-side, healthy joy on the beach, swimming in the sea or a pool, beauty and health programs in the spa, or sports and recreation giving you new energy.

Local sights and attractions Fiesa Between Piran and Strunjan there’s a small and nice bay surrounded by hills, called Fiesa. It’s kown for its two sweet water lakes, the small natural one and the big artificial one, both near the sea. The big lake was made due to over extensive use of clay for brick making. Both lakes are protected as important segments of local flora and fauna. In the past decades the bay has turned into a real swimming settlement with tourist housing and hotels, camping and even villas. Along the coast there is a walking path taking you to Piran in a matter of minutes.

Strunjan A settlement stretching along the Slovenian coast between Izola and Piran grew in the valley of the river Roja along the salt plants on the hills. This part of the coast was named a natural reservation in 1990. Apart the 4 kilometres of unique Adriatic coast we most also mention the fantastic flora and fauna of the area, which is, well, also unique. The part of the mouth of river Roja was turned to salt plants in the medieval times already. Tuday, unfortunately, only a small part is still in use. But we can see nearby a sort of a lagune – Stjuža, which used to be rich with fish. After the steep paved way leading north we come to the pilgrimage church of St. Mary’s Assumption. The legend says it was on the night from 14th to 15th of August in the long forgotten year of 1512, that two vineyard guards saw the holy virgin mother Mary. She asked them to tell the municipality to e-mail mend the as it was in a bad way. For the actual offer please send to church xx@youth-hostel.si and specify size of group, number of escorts, the desired additional services and time of stay. They renovated and extended the church and in 1520 even had the fresco by Francesco Valerij done, which envisions the meeting with the holy virgin mother. With time it became the most importaint pilgrimage centre of Istria.

Local sights and attractions SeÄ?ovlje This small town is known for the salt plants, which developed over the centuries and contributed to the economic growth of the surrounding area. The pristine bog, created in the place where the sea met the land, was made into a salt field in the middle ages already. The archaeological finds and written records mention the settlement already in the ancient Roman times, and the salt plant in the 12th century. The process of getting salt was modernized in the 14th century and when the salt plants became part of the Austrian empire they really started to grow. We know they stretched over 508 hectares and that between St. George’s (April 24th) and St. Bartholomew’s (August 24th) 500 families lived and worked in the salt miner houses. One such house has now been turned into a museum Muzej solinarstva, and the area became a protected park. Salt mining is still operating on 700 hectares of working salt fields. In the area of the abandoned fields, where the museum stands, you can see the development of the salt plants and the way of life of salt miners over the centuries, right up to modern times.

For the actual offer please send e-mail to portoroz@youth-hostel.si and specify size of group, number of escorts, the desired additional services and time of stay.
