Hostelling International Slovenia Hostelling International Slovenia (HI Slovenia) is the only national representative of Slovenia in the International Youth Hostel Federation (Hostelling International – HI). HI is a non-governmental and non-profit organization active in about 90 countries in the world. The organization works closely together with UNESCO (United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization), WTO (World Tourism Organization) and other important international organization – also it was proclaimed the sixth largest organization that offers overnighting. With 4 million members it is one of the largest youth organizations in the world and is the only network of youth hostels with about 4.000 objects for spending the night, 1.5 million beds and 30-40 overnight stays annually. HI has high standards for youth hostels, based on the treatment of the guests, security, cleanliness and privacy. But it is not its only role. Since it was established in 1932 it encourages young people for better intercultural understanding through informal education and peace, global friendship and environmentalism. The international organization, with a strong support of its national members, it offers interaction among youth of various nationalities and cultures, exchange of experience, getting to know their peers and after all themselves. For this the organization has international programs for youth, above all the ones with lesser chances, through which we spread the mission of Hostelling International, which remained the same since 1932: To promote the education of all young people of all nations, but especially young people of limited means, by encouraging in them a greater knowledge, love and care of the countryside and an appreciation of the cultural values of towns and cities in all parts of the world, and as ancillary thereto, to provide hostels or other accommodation in which there shall be no distinctions of race, nationality, colour, religion, sex, class or political opinions and thereby to develop a better understanding of their fellow men, both at home and abroad. HI Slovenia, with more than 40 hostels around Slovenia, ensures safe, budget friendly and quality boarding for all types of groups. This includes the educational field trips with various themes (history, art or language courses) as well as extracurricular activities for schools, students, sporting and other groups – or simply friends who want a joint active holiday. All Slovenian hostels meet the international demands, with most of them having special offers for the groups: • Private rooms for group leaders and drivers • Bus parking • Study rooms, game rooms and joint areas • Ensuring full meals and possible lunch packets • Personal that understands the needs of any group Hostels are placed as well in the urban centres as in nature, but all can be perfect base for discovering the country side. Do you want active holidays with rafting, skiing and hiking? Maybe something more relaxing as sightseeing of cultural and historical sights? Or would you just spoil yourself in the thermal and natural baths? PZS as part of Hostelling International is the organization to contact for any of these great experiences in a budget friendly way.

The conference part is meant both for hostel guests and outside users, who come through the youth centre Velenje. This allows for various seminars and conferences, of just simple daily events, which have the same quality level for the organizer. The room can be divided into a one large room, or into two or three separate rooms. The possibility of conference tourism is a great offer for users, who can’t carry out a quality seminar due to the objects on the market, that usually offer seminar rooms only in high priced places with boarding capability.

The surroundings of the Hostel With a population of over 30.000 Velenje is the centre of Šaleška Valley at the elevation of 396 meters. The modern city developed after second world war next to the old town square under the castle of Velenje. The coal mine and the world reknown factory of Gorenje were the first, but are not anymore the only things the city is recognisable for. The city is not only modern on the outside, its inhabitants are also modern and give the city a multicultural feel with their various national backgrounds. They contribute largely to a comfortable, creative and relaxed atmosphere. Not only for the city itself, but also for ever more guests, who are always welcome. The central part of the municipality is the plane along the river Paka. The eastern part of the valley is urbanized, as this is the fifth largest city in Slovenia and has engulfed the former villages of Škale, Stara vas, Staro Velenje, Šalek and Šmartno during its development in the past 50 years. To the north the hills begine, that stretch from Razborje to Graška Gora and over the canyon of Paka towards Huda luknja and Paški Kozjak. To the east the municipality ends with the plane of Dobrna, across the spring of Pirešica and towards south with the mountain of Ponikva and hills of Ložniško gričevje, that separate the Šaleška and Savinjska valleys. To the west there used to be a village of Preloge, where not the Šaleška valley is divided into two municipalities, and it is here that the most intensive excavations in the mine of Velenje take place. From here you can follow the creek of Velunj towards Graška Gora.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner The hostel has a common dining room for up to 30 people, and a kitchen to be used by guests. You can prepare the meals yourselves. Groups are offered meals at the restaurant next door (just 50m away), which serves genuine Slovenian cuisine for three generations now. Guests can decide between breakfast, half board, or full board. Breakfast: Restaurant next door or hostel. Lunch and dinner: Restaurant next door.

Local sights and attractions Guided tours of TIC Velenje Velenje adventures Pick your adventure. Get to know the city with all senses. See the young city, made by millions of hours of working brigade labour. Listen to stories of the past and visions of the future. Smell the nature and feel the two millions of history of the rocks. Taste the miner’s life and taste the cuisine of Velenje. City adventure Discover the charm of a modern city. Walk along the paths of a modern European city, so different from other Slovenian towns due to its modern architecture. Modern, flat roofed and green lawns will take you through an interesting history of the city. The center holds in its midst the square Tito’s square and all the important symbols of the modern Velenje, which give the city an artistic mark with a historical message. Don’t miss the voiceless milestones that show the development of the city and remind us, we need to be respectful of the past. Among them we will be impressed by the famous monument to marshal Tito in it’s larger than life size, like the man himself, looking in front of him, thinking. The castle adventure Feel the spirit of the past. A story says that once, at the bottom of lake Šalek, there was a sleeping dragon by the name of Pozoj. It was a friendly beast, but when the lake started drying up, it blamed the people for it. That’s how the dragon became violent and chased the people from the valley to the hills on the outskirts of it. It was here, where the wealthy have built the Šaleški castle, Velenjski castle and Pusti castle. Except for the castle of Velenje, the other two were not well fortified and Pozoj demolished them. But the last one Pozoj could not demolish and it gave shelter from the dragon’s rage, still protecting the valley. If you want to get to know the whole story, join us on a tour in the past entitled the valley of castles.

Local sights and attractions The museum of Velenje The museum features eleven permanent museum and gallery exhibitions. Apart from the premises at the castle, the museum also includes the Leather museum of Slovenia, Gril’s house in Lipje near Velenje, Kavčnik’s house in Zavodnje above Šoštanj (which is a remarkable museum of folk architecture) and the memorial rooms at Topolščica and Graška Gora.
TRC jezero With the mining the top layers started collapsing and a lake started forming, with a tourist-recreation center (among most beautiful ones in Slovenia) was organized. Around the lake there are walking paths with benches. Fishermen can find a hidden spot for their hooks, and the touristrecreation centre Jezero (lake) offers many activities, as it has a football and basketball course, beach volleyball terrain, but naturally features water sports, like rowing, sailing, surfing, as well – with fishing allowed at lake Škalsko jezero.
Trekking through the cave of Huda luknja with the KoroškoŠaleškim caving club A tour through the hill of Tisnik is the right choice for everybody, who wants to see the cave in the full caver’s gear. It’s a two hours of adrenalin exhaustion in the company of experienced cavers, which will appeal to even the most demanding visitor. There are always at least three guides escorting the trekkers, and tours are possible between April 1st and October 31st. You start at Lisičnica, which is one of the accesses of the cave. After a few narrow passes and two siphons you reach the part of the Bear cavern, still relatively dry. Here are many layers of gravel and clay, but also many cave-bear bones. After seeing the cavern, with beautiful stalactites, you descend 30m down a steep rock into the water cavern, from which you exit the cave.

Local sights and attractions eMCe plac The youth cultural club eMCe plac was established at the end of 2010 in the old premises of YC Velenje – the Red hall. It’s a unique product of synergy between YC and ŠŠK with the support of MSV and supported by MOV. Translated, this means that three largest youth organizations of Velenje pulled together resources to provide high quality spending of spare time for the youth, to have a place to conduct various activities, with a varied offer of youth culture and possibilities of co-creating the program and making your own ideas a reality. We also offer training and educations. All three organizations stay true to their missions and goals, but with a lot of cooperation among themselves, with the support of the municipality, finding synergy in all the overlapping fields of interest. The club consists of a café, art gallery, multipurpose room used as a concert hall or theatre during the weekends, but can be used for band practice, work-out, education, playing games or organizing workshop during the week.
