Brief Description

The thesis explored the possibility of a multifunctional Exhibition & Event Centre in the urban city of Kolkata. The Centre can conduct an international level Trade Fair and also a small-scale Exhibition. More to the multifunctional aspect the Centre also strengthens the local crafts-men’s & businesses’ market prospects by providing spaces to showcase their goods and services, and also provide a forum for foreign exporters to see their potential.

The concept was to create a center which becomes an active public place where people can meet and take part in various events. Hence, the name ‘Milan Mela’, which translates literally into ‘A Fair where everyone meets.’

The design strategy was to utilize and take advantage of the site as efficiently as possible. Along with designing a different typology to induce multi-functionality in every way possible.

Limitations

• The site has acute angles, hence leaves dead spaces at the edges.

• The water table is very high, also the soil is soft type, construction of basement for parking is not feasible.

Zoning Diagram

The temporary functions includes the exhibition halls and the spaces required for their services. And the cultural part includes the auditorium and the open spaces.

This is the only edge visible from the main road. The public activity should be visible from this edge to make this an attractive place for public. The permanent functions are kept closer to the entry so that everybody has the same experience and all the shops get equal opportunities.

The site is located strategically in the newer part of kolkata, still well connected to the main city. The location is in proximity to two major parts of the city. It is connected via major vehicular networks with public transport services like buses and metro line. It is near the wetlands, so the water table is high.

1. JW Marriott Hotel

2. ITC Shonar Bangla Hotel

3. Upcoming Metro Station on an intersection of major primary roads.

4. Science City: A major public place of the city

5. Maa Flyover: This Flyover connects the busy parts of the city

6. At the moment this is an empty plot.

7. Local Tanneries, workshops and residences of the labours and workers.
