This book documents my learning experience through the ‘Visual Thinking’ module during my third semester at National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad. The course was completed under the guidance of Dr. Tridha Gajjar.

1 puns

noun noun: pun; plural noun: puns 1. a joke exploiting the different possible meanings of a word or the fact that there are words which sound alike but have different meanings.

As a part of this project, we were expected to illustrate a visual and situational pun. Duration: 3 days The challenge behind the project was to depict the various layers of information within a single image or medium. We also learnt about how the viewer’s eye has to be guided in decoding the layers of information in the planned heirarchy. I shall further enlist my learnings through the process followed.

VISUAL PUN

The initial drawings were a literal depiction of the two ideas to be overlapped- the graffiti that says WORLD PEACE and a group of men peeing in front of it.

The group of men replaced by a dog for subtlety in expression. The kid as a discoverer of the underlaying meaning.

PEACE deforming into PEES as it is not natural for the reader’s mind to perceive the act of pissing as ‘peeing’ and therefore important to suggest the word on our own

Eliminating the distracting elements In the above explorations, attempt was made to eliminate unnecessary or repetitive information.

SITUATIONAL PUN For this project, I attempted to visualize a proverb-

it is no good crying over spilt milk Its literal translation in english would be- what is the use of crying after the bird has picked on the harvest. Situational puns deal with change in context to add humour and therefore I related the subject of the lush fields going barren with balding

The play of scale to depict the idea is prominent in the adjoining design. However, the colors may lead the viewer in thinking of the bird as a similarly rendered insect.

The adjoining design played with emphasizing the subject- the CHIDIYA and the KHET, therefore, both rendered in a contrasting yellow.

This project was an immersive one where one deals with representing or satisfying curiosities with the help of numbers, which are an abstraction of the real world itself. Visualisation can help detach focus from the individual data points and explore them from a different angle The idea motivated me to find a pattern in the frienships I’ve had so far to see how successful (or far) so as to assess why.

15

IDENTIFYING PARAMETERS To set the parameters of friendship I went through a few studies that included Mendelson, M. J. & Aboud’s McGill Friendship Questionnaire, and Friendship Quality scale by Lie Meen Thien. Closeness, help, acceptance and safety were the four parameters in the friendship quality model. The McGill Friendship Questionnaire talks about companionship, help, intimacy and reliance in a relationship. In my project, the parameters wereDURATION and TYPE

16

As I proceeded with the project I realized that my motive is not to judge the quality of friend but to assess the intensity and type of relationship- which demands for two way parameters DURATION & TYPE OF RELATION

VISUAL METAPHOR

Visuals were explored for the depiction of the data but their were limitations that came with the chosen form, like scope for additional parameters or deforming the form of the actual metaphor.

3 metaphor a metaphor is a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable Under this assignment, an issue had to be projected through metaphors. I focussed on the issue of body shaming, particularly in women. The definition of body shaming is the practice of making critical, potentially humiliating comments about a person’s body, be it size, shape, color or marks. Adjoining are the initial concepts explored to bring out the issue. We finalized with the idea of transforming the ‘marks’ or ‘taboos’ people have about the human form into beauties of nature. The idea is to empower the victims to take their own decisions. After all, there’s no wrong way to have a body
