This book documents my learning experience through the ‘Word and Image’ module, during my second semester at National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad.
COURSE BRIEF The module ‘Word and Image’took us through a rigorous process from decoding the design brief to visually twitching the final designs. The 2 week module included designing an identity and a book cover. During the course of identity design for the client, we looked for reasons to redesign or create an identity from scratch, the impact our decision would make on the audience, and whether the brand message has been sent across. The challenge with the book cover design lay in maintaining the suspense of the content while depicting the mood through type and color. Considerations like the functional usage and desk life of the book have to be taken care in order to take certain decisions about book binding and material.

VISUAL IDENTITY The project was aimed upon designing a brand identity for Theatre Age, a Non-Government Organisation, which is dedicated towards transforming the lives of street children, into selfsufficient assets. TheatreAge teaches and engages the underprivileged children into various performing arts like drama, dance, and music to tap their vocational abilities.

THE CLIENT THEATREAGE Our Mission To provide a platform to underprivileged and exploited slum children, for channelizing their youthful energy into constructive avenues, aimed at transforming them into enlightened and economically independent citizens; to prepare them to face the “real world and enable them to walk parallel to the mainstream. Our Approach TheatreAge teaches and engages the underprivileged children into various performing arts like drama, dance, and music to tap their vocational abilities. Regular free classes are conducted by voluntary professionals to train children in these arts. The Once a child is ready to hit the hot iron, he/she is introduced to formal education in their respective fields of interest. The promising students are even admitted to government schools at the NGO’s expense. Thus helping him/her commence his/her journey as a responsible, respectable, and economically independent citizen. Our Methodology Theatre Age is a self-sustaining NGO. Income is generated by performing theatre and musical shows by children. Theatre Age also gets frequent donations from generous citizens and institutions, who have seen our work and vouch for its impact. 11
EXPLORATIONS: NURTURE, TALENT, ADOLESCENCE
1 The initial design reflects nurture and growth of the subject- the hand sheltering his own self, and another hand guiding him. The overall flow in the design leads one towards the top of the composition. Colors were not explored for this design.

2 In the second design, the hands are used as a metaphor for masks (symbolic of drama) signifying self sufficiency. The colors chosen are slightly desatured shades of red, yellow and blue, as basic colors a kid could recognize.

3 Keeping the same concept, explorations were made using different materials (pencil, crayons). Black was chosen to resemble graphite, and orange to bring out the playful aspect of the group.

4 The final design is a typographic exploration where the masked kid is subtracted from the mass to form the initials of the group- TA Mostly tints were used against blue to bring out the drama aspect of the brand. When used against whites, the impact is softer. Pattern was generated out of the masked faces, depicting variety

EXPLORATIONS Imagery was derived out of different concepts, majorly playing with the human scale (Alice’s) and elements from the story (mad Hatter’s tea party, the jungle) The final concept revolves around the plot of the story- Alice following Mr. Rabbit and entering into Wonderland.
