Restoration Strategy
1
Intervention Is a process that activates the potential or repressed meaning of a specific place through a process of uncovering, clarification and interpretation. Intervention can be destructive as much as it can be constructive. When a contaminated building is intervened upon it is usually a process of clarifying or translating the infection, a surgical procedure using robust measures to stitch together the old with the new use.
2
Insertion Is a process that establishes an intense relationship between the original building and its adaptation and yet allows the character of each to exist in a strong independent manner. When new elements are inserted alongside old buildings the contrast between the previous use and the new function could be described as a process of ‘cleaning’ or ‘healing’ contaminated spaces.
2
Installation Heightens the awareness of an existing building and successfully combines the new and old without compromising or interfering with each other. Installation can be used to make a short sharp shocking statement in the form of a powerful comment on the contamination of a host space.
Brooker and Stone have divided the remodeling strategy based on how the new structure attached to the existing building. In the mentioned order, installation is the process that the new elements exist independently from the building. Brooker, G. and Stone, S. (2004). Rereadings: Interior architecture and the design principles of remodeling existing buildings. London: RIBA Enterprises.

this beautiful tower so that it could live on for many more years. But I did not want to restrict the access for tourists or just visitors, this would have been hard if I choose to go with the intervention strategy. One more important aspect was that this tower is historically marked. This means I cannot really touch it in any way. There for I choose insertion, this allows me to give the tower a new purpose and a new way of seeing it. And also to create a new structure that connects with the tower in a more non direct way.

The new trend: Life centered Design
L
ife-centered Design starts from the premise (or world view) that everything is connected, human beings are not separate from the planet that we all live, including the biggest
climate systems, and therefore everything in one way or another effects everything else — even if we can’t identify that. Life-centered Design means contributing to all living systems in a way that not only “does no harm” but actively helps them survive and thrive.
https://medium.com/@cassierobinson/beyond-human-centred-designto-501a994f3123
We currently live in almost 100% the opposite of Life Centered Design, and have created a society made for single use, where the lifespan of objects and the impact of their death is an afterthought to profit. For example in grocery stores in Japan, bananas are sold individually wrapped with labels and tags. Bananas are already in the wrapped it the world’s most perfect packaging — their skin. Instead of an additive approach, Life Centered Design asks how can it design as well as nature does to create products and services that compliment the ecosystems we live in instead of creating extra work for it. For years, the use of user-centered and human-centered design has often separated people from ecosystems. Now, designers must address people as part of an ecosystem rather than at the center of everything. This means designing for two sets of values: personal and collective.

any animals dig dens for protection from weather, disasters, or predators, and this behavior may have allowed some species to survive
when others have died out. I will translate this into my building with sub-grade design. Allowing thermo-regulation for the building. Keeping the building cold during hot days and warm during cold days and nights.
A problem with underground buildings is the natural light. It can not reach far inside the building which results in a dark and claustrophobic atmosphere. My strategy for this is the use of lowered down atrium. Atrium and courtyards are frequently incorporated into sub-grade designs to provide access, to Create outdoor rooms, and to introduce natural light. But also to help with natural ventilation. All underground homes need well-designed ventilation systems to control indoor air quality and humidity. For this I am also inspired by animal dens. To be specific, the prairie dogs burrows. The way that a prairie dog builds the openings to its burrow helps to harness wind energy from the windy plains and create passive ventilation through the burrow’s tunnels. With my spiral like building, it will trap wind, swirl it around through water (at the bottom) that cools it and then pushing it into the building. The air will pass through the rooms and warm air will rise and go out through chimneys or on ventilation on top of windows.

Finding new ways to live and learn through the importance of networking. I wanted the interior to repeat itself like the nautilus shell, representing the forward
movement we are making in here. So I created two paths, one indoor and one outdoor. (Having in mind corona pandemic at this point as well) The outdoor path follows the atrium that is created around the tower. Joined by a water pond surrounding the tower. You will be able to access all rooms directly or indirectly. Both via sliding doors or standard doors. In the interior corridor there will be windows separating the different rooms from the corridor. Creating a more open atmosphere. By this stage I was figuring out where I wanted my windows and doors in the outer structure. I knew where the building was coming out of the ground and hanging over the cliff side, and I wanted everything to match perfectly. Leading you into the next slide.

Colours & Materials
C
olor is an integral element of our world, not just in the natural environment but also in the man-made architectural environment. Color always played a role
in the human evolutionary process. The environment and its colors are perceived, and the brain processes and judges what it perceives on an objective and subjective basis. Psychological influence, communication, information, and effects on the psyche are aspects of our perceptual judgment processes. MATERIALS When addressing sustainability in architecture, it’s important that the choice of building materials doesn’t have a negative impact on the environment. Recycled materials such as reclaimed cardboard tubes can help to reduce the energy consumption that goes into manufacturing new materials. When older buildings are demolished, usable wood and other materials is usually reclaimed and renewed, allowing these materials to be retrofit and serve a new purpose, together with old doors, windows, mantels and hardware. When looking at new materials for sustainable buildings, those that can be rapidly renewed, such as bamboo, are good options. Bamboo can be harvested for commercial use after just six years, which is a rapid reduction when compared to timber. When possible, sustainable architecture uses materials that are found at the building site itself, reducing the need for energy-intensive transport or the manufacture of additional material. For example, if trees are being cut down to make way for the building, these should be employed as part of the building itself.

ardboard tubes are so commonplace that we may no longer even notice them.
The material is part of modern life and is being produced for a multitude of industrial applications and consumer products. Such as the fabric industry. This results in a lot of left over tubes that you can re use in other purposes. These tubes are low-cost, 100% recyclable and environmentally sustainable option, but also have the mechanical properties required to withstand structural loads.
Because it is lightweight, it does not require very sturdy foundations, reducing construction time and cost.

iridescent material on the inside of abalone shells, this concrete came alive. It can adjust its own thermal capacity, so that it stores more heat when the outside temperature is high, keeping building interiors cool. It also cleans the air. Embedded nano-titanium particles in the composite break down pollutants into harmless substance via reactions catalyzed by sunlight.
It is self healing, for example, when it is damaged, the hairline cracks that form can undergo healing just through exposure to water and air.

Double Facade Vertical Wood Slats
T
he site is exposed to sunlight all sun hours of the day. Resulting in heating of the building. By already having the building underground helps with the cooling but
to reduce it even further an help with energy efficiency I chose to apply a double facade inspired by cacti.
Nature has solved the heating problem by equipping many cacti with cooling ribs (see pic 2). These shade the cactus’s surface against the scorching sun and simultaneously improve heat radiation. The alternating planes of light and shade of the vertical cooling ribs of the torch thistle produce rising and falling air currents, which improve heat radiation.
I chose to represent the cactus ribs with recycled wood slats (see pic 1) that will shade the concrete walls behind. But this also allows the concrete to still clean the air from pollution and self heal by getting exposed to water and air. The natural wooden slats merges the building with the land it sits on.

playful setting with acrylic tubes that is inspired by the base of a tree and represents a “cut off” forest that you walk through. These are placed strategically according to the setting inside the building and the amout of natural light in those areas.
These tubes have multiply functions, a circular ventilation system & allows natural light to
enter the buidling. It can be utilized as a playground for children, tables or just as art.
Recycled acrylic such as Ecocrylic® is sustainable and an especially green choice in the acrylic world. The recycled acrylic is just as crystal clear, colourfast and UV resistant as the non-recycled variants. The great advantage of this material is that it can be recycled time and time again and can be reused. It is a circular material.

Sun shades
T
o be able to utilize the green roof as a look out point, for picnics and research it is vital to have shade that creates a comfortable space. For this I looked into natural
protection. Personally, physalis is my favorite fruit, its thin shell around protects a delicate fruit/seed. After the fruit is ready the shell dries and whats left is its skeleton surrounding the fruit. Such a beautiful protection that is more visual protection than physical hard shell protection that many other seeds have.
I wanted to use this beautiful visual protection for my sun shades. Creating a structure that lets visuals and sunlight to go though but for the structure to still match the heavy volume that both existing and new volume has.
