Design brief The design brief requires us to redesign the commercial built residential housing on two different sites and also adhering to different housing model types; detached housing and terrace housing. The two design schemes below attempt to redesign the house to create a more comfortable environment for the residents. By understanding the relative and important sustainable design principles, a more functional place of residence can be built.

Sustianable Design Apporch Understanding and considering the built environment is important when approaching residential design as it enables for longevity and a more comfortable living environment.
To create a thermally comfortable environment sustainably, one must carefully consider the relative residing design principles that allow for the following requirements.
The detached house implements a number of these principles to improve the houses further generally sustainability.
Due to living circumstance, solar panels are a great way to provide power to the residents. Solar energy is renewable and has a generally a lower maintenance cost.
Water is a scarce resource. Therefore there are many benefits to collecting rainwater. The residential house can use the rainwater for some small use water activity around the house. Therefore creating a more sustainable and consider the distribution of water.
An important aspect of creating a thermally comfortable living environment is cross ventilation between spaces. Cross ventilation allows for improved thermal performance during summer, allowing for a gradual temperature drop within the house. This specifically required for the upper floor.
Lighting is not only important in creating nice living environments. It also has thermal benefits when the opening are considered carefully. When implemented correctly, it enables for natural heating of the internal spaces. With considered shading, the built environment can have improved thermal performance via natural mean. The intention is to use planting to shade the house.

Water is a scarce resource. Therefore there are many benefits to collecting rainwater. The residential block intents to use rainwater for several small uses water-based activities such as; watering the garden, flushing the toilet, rinsing fruit and vegetables (opportunities for a community garden)
