THE INCLUSIVE

BRIEF DESIGN BRIEF

The brief requires us to develop a conceptual design for a co-living unit on a site. The site of the co-living unit by the Inclusive is located in Mitte Germany. A city with a fraught and complex history due to the devastation of the war. The city itself has a total lack of urban memory, therefore the aim of the co-living unit is to bring back this currently missing through familiar spatial arrangements which are reflective of old Germany. The brief called for a deep understanding of how the site city is culturally and socially.

SITE ANALYSIS Germany Mitte

Understanding the sun paths on site. As the site is in a different hemisphere its important to know this , as allows for better design

Tends to get quite cold in Germany, Therefore optimizing sun into the living spaces is very important .

Intersecting road within the site which facilitates entry and exit into the site

Area within the site which consists of car and a green area.

Pre-existing building: within the site.

As suggested the intersection road creates a entry into the courtyard space within the site

The concept design take up a small percentage of the site. This placement allows for optimal access to services within the city

Concept design front aligns with the smaller per existing build to create a more prevalent street scape within the general area.

Deciding design factor was the living units access to sunlight. Previous option meant only some would have adequate sunlight.

My main concern was how was I going optimize sunlight within

Although generic in from the spatial arrangement of the design allows for optimal sunlight And it also reminiscent of what was old Germany

The composition of the site forces its inhabitants to interact in a space which is inherently for social interaction

The current design choice allows for both a court yard and better living conditions

CONNECTION TO SITE

Devastation of war meant that Germany dealt with the concept of spatial images. Meaning memory of what was old Germany or per-War Germany tends to manifests itself in physical objects which serve as an image of this memory.

The court yard spaces, as such increases feelings of growth in urbanity and order within a city

stood as spatial imagery. An idea that takes into consideration that memories tend to manifest themselves in physical objects. These physical objects are crucial reminders of what was. When discussing this idea through architecture, we are talking about the importance of buildings that are not just monumental but that are common.

The concept design tries to project a physical connection to memory and how this memory can be used as a point of social interaction through spatial design. Understanding this concept was critical as it serves as a point of reference to the importance of history when designing for the future. How what was previously implement into space can be used now to provide functionality and socially conscious design which is sensitive to the site.
