A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Welcome and thank you for your interest in our college. We are really proud of our students, our staff and everything that we achieve together. We believe that every student who comes to us has amazing potential - it’s our job to work with you so that you can unlock that potential. Life here at Winstanley will be new and challenging but don’t worry, our main aim is to help you be the best you can be. Our teachers specialise in helping students develop the skills needed to study at this level, both personal and academic. We also work hard to prepare our students for life after Winstanley whether that’s university or employment.
And we believe in offering a rich student experience so we take students all over the world as well offering exciting opportunities to get involved in college and community life. This all contributed to us being awarded ‘College of the Year’ at the Times Education Supplement Awards in 2017.
But don’t just take our word for it – come and see for yourself. Talk to our students who will tell you the truth and have a look round our college to really get the feel of what it is like to be a Winstanley student.

In most schools, Winstanley staff will give a short presentation to Year 11 students sometime in the term before Christmas. Students and their parents will then be invited to attend an Open Evening in in order to look round the college and discuss course selection with staff. If you wish to apply to the college, you should then book an individual interview via the college website www.winstanley.ac.uk or by contacting the Admissions Office on 01695 628610. Offers of places are usually made at interview and enrolments take place in August, following the publication of GCSE results. Winstanley College Entry Policy The college will calculate the number of student places available each year which allows us to maintain the quality of the student experience and offers will be made accordingly. Offers will normally be conditional on your achieving certain GCSE results. Full details of our entry policy can be found on our website www.winstanley.ac.uk
Special Consideration Requests for special consideration should normally be accompanied by support from the applicant’s school and be made in writing to the Vice Principal, Mel Chadwick. Appeals for special consideration will be heard by the Admissions Panel if received before GCSE results are published. Only in exceptional circumstances is the college able to hear appeals made after GCSE results have been published. Please note that normally, the college will give preference to Year 11 school leavers.

An award winning experience In April 2016, we won ‘College of the Year’ at the Educate North Awards as well as ‘Most Inspirational 16-18 Provider’ at Merseyside’s Educate Awards in November 2016. In February 2017 the Times Educational Supplement crowned us ‘Sixth Form College of the Year’.

Personal Tutor
Personal Tutor
When you first come to Winstanley you will be welcomed by your Personal Tutor at induction. You will stay with the same Personal Tutor for two years and will get to know each other well.
Personal Tutors should be the first person you go to for advice and support, especially if things go wrong. Students see their Personal Tutor in their scheduled tutorial sessions but you can also drop by their office for a one-to-one chat, or email them if you are in difficulty.
There is a Senior Tutor who is in charge of a group of students (ie first or second years) and acts similarly to a ‘Head of Year’ at school. It will be your Personal Tutor who guides you through college, watching attendance, encouraging progress and guiding on choices for the future.

At any time, parents are encouraged to contact the Personal Tutor to discuss their son’s/daughter’s progress, however there is a formal opportunity to discuss progress with subject teachers at Parents’ Consultation Days in January.
Student Services We are a friendly bunch at Student Services and our aim is to offer you as much practical help as possible. We were recently awarded the Matrix Standard for pastoral guidance in recognition of the service we provide. Student Services is the main point of call for just about any question that you may have. We offer a one stop shop for all your needs, whether this is attendance, work experience, lockers or university applications. We also organise all the student transport here and can offer you advice on permits, routes and costs. Staff are also able to give advice on what assistance is available to help with the financial demands of studying at College.

Attendance is very important at College and it is here too that you would come to explain your absence to the Attendance Officer – who may also contact parents should there be a query or concern. Some students may find starting College a little overwhelming and our aim is to make your transition as smooth as possible. You can access these services in person or via email to the relevant person. This is only a selection of the numerous facilities available within Student Services so please come and visit us during induction week to find out
Academic and Personal Support At Winstanley, there is a very strong focus on developing the full potential of every individual student, both academic and personal. There are times when you may need support to help you achieve your goals. This could be with your teacher, your Personal Tutor, a Study Support Tutor or an Independent Learning Assistant (ILA). The ILAs provide one to one or small group study skills support to help boost achievement. Whatever your ability, the ILAs can give you that extra help when you need it by providing you with individualised support. The Study Support Team also provide support for students with specific learning differences, dyslexia or dyspraxia for example and for students with disabilities. Support is designed to meet individual needs and assessment is completed by specialist tutors. Animal Therapy A new initiative this year, animal therapy, courtesy of Home Safari has proven very popular. From walking Belle the dog to cuddling Barney the bunny, students have told us they felt their stresses melt away when in the company of the animals.

Extended Curriculum Department: For our students, excellent A-level results are just the first steps towards fulfilling their personal and professional ambitions while at College. The Extended Curriculum Department provides small-group tutorials to deliver the additional qualifications, experiences and opportunities outside and beyond A-level that each of our students needs to realise their potential. Winstanley has a fantastic record of helping students gain a place at university to study medicine, dentistry or veterinary science. 2017 was a record year, with 59 offers being made to students to study on these competitive degree courses.
We currently offer eight Professional Pathways: Academic Athletes: For students studying Physical Education A-level who wish to progress to become a professional athlete, sports coach or manager. Architecture: For students studying Maths and either Art or Graphics A-levels who wish to progress to become professional architects through earning a place to read Architecture at university. Finance & Accounting: For students studying Maths and either Economics or Business Studies A-levels who wish to progress to a career in the accountancy, actuarial sciences or financial services professions. Healthcare: For students studying Biology or Health Studies at A-level who wish to progress into healthcare professions such as nursing, radiography, physiotherapy, paramedicine, midwifery and dietetics.
Professional Pathways: For students with a particular professional ambition, the Professional Pathways Programme offers bespoke specialist support to ensure they are best informed and prepared to progress in these highly competitive professional careers.
Our Professional Pathways are built around five key components: Guidance on appropriate A-level subject choices Work experience placements with prestigious companies A tailored EPQ to develop sector-specific skills and knowledge Talks by academics and industry professionals Pathways mentor to support your preparation to progress into the profession
Law: For students who are studying Law A-level and who wish to pursue Law in their future studies or career. Marketing, PR, Advertising and Event Management: For students studying design or communication subjects (Graphics, Photography or Media Studies A-levels) who wish to pursue a career in the marketing, public relations, advertising or events management professions. Professional Writing: For students studying A-level English who wish to pursue a career writing commercially for a company or as a freelancer or journalist. Teaching: For students studying at least two national curriculum subjects at A-level (English, Maths, Biology Chemistry, Physics, History, Geography, Religious Studies, Modern Foreign Language, Art and Design, Computing, Music, Physical Education) who wish to progress to train as teachers at either Primary or Secondary level.
Interview accreditation As places on the professional pathways are strictly limited applicants will be invited to an interview or trial prior to enrolment to discuss their motivation and aptitude for a career in their chosen profession. Successful interviewees wil be awarded points towards the entry requirement for Winstanley College as per the entry policy.

Sponsored Degree and Apprenticeship Opportunities There has been a steady growing interest in alternative pathways to full-time degree courses and more students are applying for apprenticeships or sponsored degrees. These opportunities can offer young people progression to degree level and beyond. Many students are now recognising the importance of work-related learning in today's competitive economy. The college has a CareersAdviser and Employer Links
Co-ordinator, who specifically works with employers and training providers to find apprenticeship opportunities for Winstanley students and support them through the recruitment and selection processes. Despite this pathway being very competitive with applicants often going through very rigorous recruitment and selection processes, the number of students now entering professions via this route is increasing year on year.

Joe Little and Lucy Hickey – BBC A number of students opted for Degree Apprenticeships at organisations including Rolls Royce, the BBC and Deloitte in 2017. Joe Little and Lucy Hickey, who both attended St Peter’s Catholic High School in Orrell, secured prestigious apprenticeships with the BBC. Joe’s Apprenticeship is in Broadcast Engineering and Lucy’s is a TV Production Apprenticeship.
Joe says: “An apprenticeship meant I would receive on the job training, gaining all the hands-on skills I would need and at the same time would still be able to complete my degree so that’s what made me choose this route. The other obvious benefit was getting paid to work and study!” Lucy added: “Working in Media City is going to be so exciting.”

Your Award-Winning College We have just added a third prestigious trophy to our cabinet after being awarded Sixth Form College of the Year at the national Times Education Supplement (TES) FE Awards. The TES Further Education Awards celebrate the best further education colleges in the country. From record number of entries – up by a third compared with last year –, it was tough competition, but we were crowned winner from a shortlist of eight other colleges. The Award was presented at a glittering ceremony at the Grosvenor House hotel in London’s Park Lane.
This was the third award in less than 12 months; in November we won the title of ‘Most Inspirational 16-18 Education Provider’ at the Educate Awards and last year were crowned ‘Sixth Form College of the Year’ at the Educate North Awards.

Ibinabo Jack – West End Star Ibinabo Jack was a pupil of St. Peter’s High School in Orrell before attending Winstanley from 1999-2001. She studied Combined English, Performing Arts and Psychology and originally intended on studying Criminology or Law at University. However, after falling in love with Musical Theatre whilst at college, she decided to go down this route. Ibinabo says: “I played on the netball team during my first year at Winstanley but had to choose between that and Performing Arts as practice and rehearsals took place during the ‘free period’ on Wednesday afternoons. I chose Performing Arts and I’ve never looked back. My time at Winstanley College was the best – I learned so much about myself, my career options and I made some lifelong friends. “After Winstanley I applied to drama schools and started auditioning for West End musicals. My professional acting debut came in 2004, originating the role of Nala in The Legend of the Lion King in Disneyland, Paris. Coincidentally, on the day that I signed my contract at Disney, I got a letter from Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts, offering me a place with a Dance & Drama Award. I deferred my place for 1 year, forfeiting my scholarship. “I was at Mountview from 2006-9 and I had an amazing 3 years. My first job after graduating was originating the role of ‘Pilar’ in Legally Blonde The Musical at the Savoy Theatre which was my West End debut and so much fun. I stayed with the show for 2 years then went on to play ‘Olivia’ in the European premiere of The Color Purple The Musical.

“I auditioned for Dreamgirls in June 2015 when I was living back at home in Wigan and working 3 part time jobs. The auditions went really well but I didn’t hear anything back after my final so I carried on working and auditioning for other projects. Then on 26th of November 2015 (Thanksgiving), I got 2 phone calls from my agent. The first was an offer from The Bodyguard U.K. Tour and 6 minutes later I was offered the role of Lorrell Robinson in Dreamgirls! “That day my life changed forever. The cast and company are incredible and as the only British Dreamgirl, I’m the luckiest Wiganer in the world!”

Daley, a former Burscough Priory pupil, attended Winstanley from 2005 – 2007, completing A-levels in Music, Music Technology, French and German. He then went on to study for a BA (Hons) in French Studies at the University of London Institute in Paris and then for an MSc in Language Sciences (Linguistics with Neuroscience) at University College London.

Zara Khan – Nurse and Local Councillor One of the youngest Councillors in Lancashire, is making her mark after just a short time in post. Zara Khan, 23, was elected as Councillor for Chorley East in May 2016 after being inspired to stand for post by her mother, Hasina Khan, who is also a borough councillor. Since then she has been listening to the local community and campaigning on their behalf.

Enrichment Something for everyone! Students come to Winstanley to learn and achieve but there’s more to life and learning than just the exam treadmill. The students who really enjoy college get involved in enrichment activities that suit them and in all departments as well as across college. Performing Arts There are amazing opportunities at Winstanley for anyone interested in Drama, Dance or Music. Trips to concerts, plays and dance productions are arranged on a regular basis, taking students all over the country. A number of musical groups are formed every year from Classical to Jazz for both instrumental and choral work, and these are often managed and directed by the students themselves. Each year major productions have been put on in the college. Past productions have included The Musicals ' Little Shop of Horrors' and ‘Joseph', Bryony Lavery's play 'It Snows', Macbeth, 'Multiphony Music Show' (featuring the Jazz Band, Choir, Folk Band, Solo singer/songwriters and various Rock Ensembles),our annual Dance Show and entries for Theatre and Dance festivals. Representative Sport
Coaching Awards & Refereeing
The college runs a number of successful sports teams that compete in North West and Association of College (AoC) competitions. At Winstanley you can compete regularly in the following sports: football, netball, hockey, basketball, rugby, volleyball, tennis and badminton.
We offer a Community Sports Leader Award (CSLA) which teaches valuable leadership skills to those wanting to get into sports coaching. In recent years Winstanley Sports Leaders have helped to run the Volleyball Manchester School Games.
There are regional competitions in the following sports: badminton, basketball, cross country, golf, football 7 a-side, hockey, netball, rugby union 10s, squash, swimming, table tennis, tennis, trampolining and volleyball.
Winstanley College has also supported five students in becoming qualified football referees with the assistance of funding over the last few years. The college funded two students to gain Level 1 Coaching Awards in Tennis and two other students gained Netball Ambassador qualifications through England Netball. As sports ambassadors, the college helps students gain valuable experience within their chosen sport and enables professional development.
If a team wins at the regional competitions they represent the North West at the National Championships. This is where the best athletes from each region all compete against each other with the aim of winning the Wilkinson Sword National Champions’ Trophy. Last year Winstanley won the regional competitions in women’s volleyball. The College also had three cross country runners as part of the North West Squads.

Recreational Sport Winstanley College has a College Sport Maker who runs fun activities that are open for all students to try, regardless of ability. Typical activities that run throughout the year are: archery, 5 aside FA Team19 league, touch rugby, rounders, table tennis, social tennis, rock climbing, fencing, dodgeball, yoga, trampolining and, most recently, Zumba.
Students are welcome to use the WINFit centre facilities during their time at college. Typically, the gym is open every day 9-5pm. Many students play table tennis in the upstairs activity room in their free time.
We pride ourselves on listening to students and accommodating requests such as our Zumba fitness class which started this year. Wherever possible we will offer you the opportunity to enter competitions and in the past students have entered events ranging from athletics to equine eventing!

International Trips Winstanley College is renowned for providing a huge range of enrichment activities. We’ve now gone one step further by winning the British Council International Schools Gold Award. The award is in recognition of our excellent commitment to educating students about playing an effective role in a global community.
World Challenge Winstanley College has a long tradition of having many challengers take part in exotic expeditions with World Challenge. World Challenge is a skills-based experiential learning programme allowing challengers to travel to far flung parts of the globe. As part of these expeditions challengers do project work through construction and teaching, spend time trekking through mountains and jungle as well as having some time for rest and relaxation. Staff and students have completed trips to a variety of places including Venezuela, Ethiopia, Uganda, Madagascar, Tanzania to climb Kilimanjaro, India and the Himalayas. This year students went on a multi country expedition to Thailand, China, Vietnam and Cambodia. All students that attend Winstanley College have an opportunity to sign up for a World Challenge Expedition.

Why should I study Applied Science?
What more is there?
Do you have a passion for Science? Do you enjoy developing practical skills and solving problems? Do you like to get involved in project work and think about how Science affects the World around us?
Winstanley College offers a huge array of STEM related activities, including a dedicated STEM day in which there are talks, demonstrations and stalls covering all three sciences. You will be asked to participate in this day and possibly also present some of your research. There are also a number of trips and visits arranged which will be appropriate for your course. In addition, we offer opportunities to become involved in research partnerships with local universities and regularly enter students into national science competitions.
The Extended Certificate in Applied Science covers all the above and more. It is a vocationally based Level 3 qualification in which you will cover the scientific principles of all three Science subjects, build practical skills in Biology, Chemistry and Physics and use these to complete scientific investigations. You will also look at the wider impact of Science, discussing the role of scientists and the public perception of science. The course is assessed via both examination and coursework with equal weighting and therefore research and time management skills will also be developed, which are essential in higher education and the workplace.
How are you supported on the course? Many of the lessons will be activity based and you will spend a considerable amount of time completing practical work in newly refurbished laboratories. Each module is carefully planned to allow you to work both individually and also as part of a group. There will also be access to ICT facilities to allow you to work on portfolio work during lesson time with the support of your teacher.
What is an Applied Science lesson like?
Biology, Chemistry & Physics: There are very obvious links to each of the separate science subjects, however there is no requirement to study them at A-level. Maths: The course contains mathematical content, particularly within the Physics related units. You should be comfortable with Maths and also be prepared to develop your skills. There is no requirement to study Maths at A-level but it can be studied as one of your additional subject choices. Vocational Health and P.E.: There is a unit covering the workings of the human body which will supplement both subjects. If you wish to continue and study related subjects at university then the Extended Certificate in Applied Science will enhance your application.
Careers and university The Extended Certificate in Applied Science has been developed in conjunction with a number of Higher Education institutions. Therefore it is a desirable qualification for any Applied Science courses at university or Applied Science careers. These include biomedical, forensic and sports science degrees and nursing. It is eligible for UCAS points that can be used towards progression to university.

You are likely to be completing investigation and portfolio work for approximately half of the given lesson time throughout the course. You will get hands on experience of experimental techniques across all the sciences. The other half of the lesson time will be taught in lessons using a variety of activities, from teacher led discussions to research tasks and presentations. This is to ensure that you are fully prepared for the theoretical examination part of the Applied Science course.

ART, CRAFT & DESIGN If you are an all-round student who enjoys many aspects of art and design practice and would like to pursue a varied course that will give you the flexibility and freedom to work across a broad range of disciplines, then this is the course for you. You will be introduced to a wide range of exciting drawing techniques designed to give you confidence and build up your skills. You will also be able to opt in to a series of workshops in printmaking, construction techniques, colour, paint application, paper art, digital media and textile arts that will help to extend your skills, enrich your creativity and discover where your strengths lie. Developing your own practice as an Artist, you’ll be encouraged to take an exploratory and open-minded approach to new ideas and processes. You will also receive regular, one to one tutorial support
by a dedicated team of tutors who come from a range of different art backgrounds and are able to offer expertise across a variety of disciplines. So whether you want to pursue a single element of art practice, or you would prefer to combine a number of elements, the varied programme we offer, including photography and film, drawing, painting, printmaking, textile and fibre arts, sculpture, mixed media and installation, allows you to be creative and individual. The breadth of our course allows you to develop conceptual and representational themes such as figure, still life, landscapes and location as well as issue based work.

The topics I have enjoyed most in Biology are fighting disease, DNA/RNA and the practical lessons. You get to go into much more details than you do at GCSE so everything starts to fit together. do work or just want to be with your friends. I also had family who had been to the college and had a good experience. My advice to new students is to choose subjects you enjoy, you don’t want to be stuck in a lesson counting down the minutes until it finishes!
BIOLOGY Why should I study Biology at Winstanley? The course revisits many of the topics from GCSE, but now the cells are magnified to reveal more detail - enzymes are understood by their chemistry and diseases are described in all their complexity, from molecules to cells, to organs to human behaviour!
How we support your learning Every student’s learning is supported by a textbook, custom-made work booklets, the Moodle site and DropBox with electronic resources to download, regular class tests and, most importantly, individual support from enthusiastic and expert teachers.
What will Biology lessons be like? Biology students spend the majority of their time being taught in our brand new Science@Winstanley building and dedicated laboratories. Lessons are a mixture of teacher-led discussions and activities, question and answer, exam practice and some group work. The department is committed to students experiencing practical work and our labs and equipment mean you will carry out practical work at every opportunity where it would advance your learning.

Throughout the year, students can extend their biological knowledge through specific activities organised by the Biology Society. These include visits to local scientific attractions, practical work and listening to guest speakers. In Business I have thoroughly enjoyed learning the theories and models around the subject. This has proven useful when watching the news and seeing business stories because now I can actually understand the reasons as to why companies react the way they do. Another aspect I have enjoyed is learning about business on an international scale. This has allowed me to use and challenge my existing business knowledge on an international basis, in areas such as global marketing, global niche markets and globalisation.

High School: Our Lady Queen of Peace A-levels studied: Chemistry, Physics, Maths In Chemistry I have enjoyed building a vast array of skills, including analytical, practical, problem-solving and the ability to think of things theoretically, which can be very hard to do. Chemistry has taught me how to recognise the building blocks, which make up everything we see, touch, smell and taste. It has been fascinating to learn about many of the world’s current challenges including global warming, global dimming, rising water levels and producing renewable fuels.

Achieving the highest possible grades was my main goal
from coming to Winstanley. They had the best sixth form results in the northwest, which attracted my attention, and they had great links to prestigious universities. On the open days the atmosphere was very friendly and seemed like I would be treated like an adult with my own responsibilities which I liked. The library seemed a great place to study (which it is, I use it every day!) and there are plenty of places to sit with friends and chat too. The college has lots of extra-curricular activities on offer and it is a very large community with lots of welfare systems in place for any possible problems you may have.
CHEMISTRY Why should I study Chemistry?
What will I study?
Studying Chemistry can open doors that you didn’t even know existed. It is a highly respected A-level and combines theoretical understanding with practical and analytical skills. If you like to ask ‘why?’ and then work towards an answer, Chemistry is for you. The food we eat, the air we breathe, the clothes we wear and the mobile phone in your pocket all depend on Chemistry. Chemistry holds the key to our future and you could be the one that unlocks the door.
We deliver the OCR Advanced Level Chemistry course (Specification A). There is a smooth transition from GCSE and practical skills are threaded throughout the course, building both confidence and skills as you study. Topics you have already covered are expanded upon, and the course will take you from in-depth analysis of organic molecules, to the Chemistry behind batteries, to predicting how fast reactions take place.

What subjects combine well with Computer Science?
Computer Science is an exciting and challenging new subject that has at its core the study of computational thinking which is increasingly regarded as an essential skill for the 21st Century. Studying Computer Science will allow you to develop the ability to think logically, algorithmically and recursively to analyse problems and to gain experience of writing computer programs to solve such problems.
We recommend that Computer Science students also study Mathematics, as there is a strong link between the two subjects and Computer Science does include significant mathematical content. Together these two subjects create a good foundation that combines well with a whole range of other subjects including Physics, other sciences and Economics, as well as other less “obvious” combinations, for example with Art for those interested in a career in Architecture. Some students also choose to combine Computer Science with IT to gain every advantage for pursuing a career in the IT industry.
What will I study? You will learn to understand the fundamental principles and concepts of Computer Science such as abstraction and decomposition as well as learning to express the laws and processes of computation using mathematics. You will learn about software and systems development, hardware and networks and gain an awareness of the technologies involved. I've been dancing since I was 5 at my local dance school; it's always been my greatest passion so I decided to pursue it as a career by studying it further at college. The Dance department here is really well kitted out and there is lots of opportunity to get involved in shows and other events and trips. I received lots of support when applying to dance colleges and found the application process really interesting, it isn't quite the same as normal university with UCAS (which I did as well) as many of the applications are directly to the colleges.

I enjoyed the auditions process the most and getting to take classes with really great teachers and other students was a very rewarding experience. In the future, I hope to become a performer. Dancing as part of a dance company would be really great before maybe moving into teaching dance and working on some of my own choreography.
DANCE Why should I study Dance at Winstanley?

You will find that everyone in your class has a real interest in Dance. You do not have to currently study Dance, or have taken GCSE Dance, but you do need to have had some experience in Dance (preferably Contemporary, Jazz or Modern Dance). Practical elements of the course are taught through technique classes, improvisation and group choreography workshops while theory classes are often delivered through creative tasks, explorations and demonstrations, making Dance an engaging subject to study.
Outside of class, we provide supervision of rehearsals in the lead up to performance exams. There are workshop and theatre visits both here and abroad. Recent activities have included movement workshops on Broadway in New York, dance masterclasses with professional dance companies such as Rambert Dance and theatre visits across the country. We have an extensive programme of dance shows and musicals each year so that you can offer your services as a performer, theatre technician or backstage.
Subject combinations The course combines very well indeed with a vast range of other subjects, be it creative, humanities or languages, but it can also provide a stimulating contrast to subjects such as the sciences. High School: St Bede’s A-levels studied: Maths, Further Maths, Economics Prior to joining Winstanley I had never studied Economics at GCSE, so apart from possessing a basic knowledge on things such as inflation, growth and unemployment rates I was faced with a completely new subject. Being proficient in Maths and desiring a career in finance, I found that Economics bridged the gap between these two interests of mine. Through learning simple and complex economic models I was able to display my mathematical flair whilst also gaining an insight into the fundamental elements that are essential to the world of finance.

I have really enjoyed the analysis of various texts such as the novel The Handmaid’s Tale, and the play A Streetcar Named Desire. It is interesting to collaborate with the class and put group ideas together, to ensure we all get the best possible notes. Additionally, my teacher splits the lesson so it is often half lecture style teaching, and half independent work. This is beneficial to me as it allows me to develop my own skills, yet also having feedback and input from my teacher. I also really enjoy he group work because it

EXTENDED PROJECT QUALIFICATION What is EPQ?
How is EPQ taught at Winstanley?
The Extended Project Qualification is an opportunity for all our students to undertake a research project to develop their experience and knowledge outside and beyond their A-level courses. The EPQ is the essence of personalised learning, students are supported in developing unique projects to provide the experience and knowledge they require to achieve their future academic and professional ambitions.
Students are taught in small tutorial groups by specialist EPQ tutors from across the A-level disciplines. The weekly tutorial teaches students the core skills of academic research, communication, planning, critical thinking and presentation alongside 1:1 mentoring and feedback on their project work. The weekly taught sessions are structured around a set of comprehensive study resources on our EPQ Moodle site to guide students from initial ideas through to their final EPQ submission.
EPQ is seen as excellent preparation for university by universities and develops the independent study skills that higher education is demanding.
There are four types of EPQ to choose from: Dissertation: An extended piece of writing exploring any topic you like. Your Dissertation will be informed by the reading and research you’ve undertaken to develop your own powerful analysis and response to a specific title. Investigation/Field Study: A practical investigatory project involving the collection and analysis of primary data to test a hypothesis. This could be a scientific investigation, geographical study, psychological investigation or a statistical survey.
How will EPQ benefit me?

I decided to come to Winstanley because at the open evenings and taster days I loved the feel of the place and how the teachers interacted with the students. I found everyone to be really friendly and the work we did was both interesting and fun, a combination that I didn’t find at any other college.
FILM STUDIES Why should I study Film?
So, that’s the course but why study it at Winstanley?
Film Studies is a challenging, thought-provoking and highly enjoyable course! Whether you are already an enthusiastic film buff, a budding filmmaker, or you would simply like to learn more about the industry, then this is the subject for you! Being able to analyse a film (much like you would a novel or a poem in English Literature) is a sophisticated skill and is looked upon very favourably by universities, who enjoy working with students who can ‘think critically’. If you study Film, you don’t just look at how a film is technically put together, but you learn about its place in history, the important messages it carries and the impact it has had on its audience and society over the years.
You will be taught by highly-qualified staff who have many years’ experience of teaching the subject and working as examiners and moderators. You will have access to a wide range of audio-visual technology to enable you to produce high quality productions. These include the latest model digital still and video cameras, a drop-in computer area for editing, a television studio, radio facility and control room for studio production, even a camera crane for those spectacular aerial shots or a steadi-cam for shooting ‘on the move’. We also have the benefit of a dedicated Media Technician who is on hand to deliver individual workshops and support when using the equipment.
What will I study?
I have been on a foreign visit to LA as part of the Film Studies trip to tour and learn about the major film studios in the US.
Some of your time will be spent in practical film production, using your knowledge of how a film gets made to make your own! You might want to write a screenplay for a film idea or use some of the industry-standard equipment in the department to produce your own short film.
There is the opportunity to participate in a number of film competitions that we enter throughout the year. We have attended film festivals, participated in National Film Week, and run a yearly ‘Film Challenge’ competition. There are also frequent guest speakers from the world of professional media and film, including an independent film director, scriptwriters and representatives from Creative Skill Set. Foreign trips have included Los Angeles, New York, Rome, London and the Berlin Film Festival.
What will an A-level in Film Studies lead to? The majority of our students will go on to university to study a related degree course such as Film and Screen Studies, Film Production or Screenwriting. Some students will enter a related field such as Journalism, Media Technology, Television and Radio or even Production Management. Others will go on to study another Arts and Humanities course at university – English, Art, History, Psychology, Business Studies etc. We are also getting an increasing number of students who study Maths and Sciences!

GEOLOGY The Earth is around 4.6 billion years old. Geology provides a record of Earth’s history; it’s past climate and life are preserved in the layers of rock like pages in a book. Without the study of Geology, we would not know that dinosaurs existed, that continents move or the importance of microorganisms in shaping our planet. Moreover, Geology also plays a central role in managing our resources, civil engineering and managing natural hazards. Geology is not an obvious subject choice for many but due to climate change and our ever dwindling natural resources it has never been more important.
What will I study The Geology A-level syllabus includes the study of: Rocks and minerals to determine the conditions in which they formed. The Earth and its structures, folds, faults and unconformities. Past life and ecosystems: including preservation, dinosaurs, mass extinction events, biodiversity and general trends in evolution (such as the invasion of the land). Climate change: evidence of past climate (e.g. snowball earth), driving mechanisms and the future.

History is a great A-level for all as it provides you with great analytical, essay writing and debating skills. The department has many modules to choose from to suit whatever period you wish to study. My favourite module was the 1951-2007 module on ‘Making Modern Britain’ as it allowed me to study events I already knew existed, but in greater detail. Within History you can reflect on your own opinions, work with others and consider other Historians views. Also, History gives students amazing super-curricular opportunities, for example international trips and the chance to listen to famous historians such as Asbridge and Todd. The
department is friendly and supportive, with teachers always available to help you if necessary. I have been a member of the History Society and an ambassador of History for the college, which involves managing student voice and making any improvements to the department. I have also taken part in a debate competition, which my team and I were successful in winning I have been very lucky to receive five offers to read History; I have also been accepted into University of Oxford and hope to start there in October 2017.

This will be worth 25% of your final A-level. You will also do a depth study on The Rise of Macedon, c. 359–323 BC looking at the rise of Alexander the Great and his conquest of the Persian Empire. IT Why should I study IT at Winstanley? Whilst jobs are disappearing in many sectors of the economy, IT is one of the few industries where highly skilled and qualified IT staff are actually in demand. Given that there are many career opportunities for both females and males alike, as well as the fact that IT is fundamental to the way we all live today, shouldn’t you be considering taking Information Technology at Winstanley College? Although a GCSE in ICT/Computing, or equivalent, would be an advantage, as long as you have a genuine interest in IT, you are motivated and committed, then anyone is welcome to study this subject at level 3.
What will I study?
Subject combinations Though traditionally linked to Business Studies, IT combines well with a range of other subjects including Media, English, Art and Design, Graphics, as well as Computer Science. However, students will find that the knowledge gained and skills developed are useful in many other contexts at home, at university as well as beyond and into employment.

Students in the department are encouraged to take part in enrichment activities which have included careers events with representatives from local universities and businesses, attending presentations from guest speakers and ex-students and a trip to see the IT systems at Manchester Airport. Students can also volunteer to become Class Representative, attending half termly meetings to discuss and get involved in departmental matters such as the re-design of the new IT dual-purpose classroom. Students also help out in the Department at College Open Evenings.
Future careers IT is particularly useful in careers such as teaching, journalism and publishing, and all aspects of the media. For those students wishing to progress further, there are degrees available in Business Information Systems/Technology, Business Management with ICT, and the well regarded ITMB degree which combines Business Management and IT with Project Planning and was designed in conjunction with employers. Previous students have also taken degrees in Software Development, Business Computing, Computer Science, and the various Broadcast & Media Production courses. More recently, students have secured places on a number of prestigious IT Apprenticeship Schemes at levels 3 and 4.
Assessment The course is divided into four units taken over the two years. Two of the units will be externally assessed by way of a 2hr written exam, and a 10hr supervised on-line project completed over the course of one week, both of which are set and marked by the exam board. The other two units are assessed through centre devised assignments ie internally set and marked projects which are then externally moderated.

Lessons will take place in a dual purpose IT/theory classroom using a range of resources and activities to facilitate your learning. How is the course structured?
The main reason to study Mathematics at A-level is because you really enjoy Maths! A Level Mathematics is a fantastic subject which combines ‘Pure Mathematics’ such as algebra, geometry and functions, with Applied Mathematics modules. It shows potential employers that you have a highly logical mind that can present organised arguments to solve numerical problems — a skill which is widely sought after. We can guarantee that every student will receive first class tuition in Mathematics at Winstanley College; all the teachers in the department are subject specialists and are very passionate about Mathematics. The department has several experienced examiners and a wealth of knowledge in how best to prepare students for the examinations. The department prides itself upon the fact that it has developed its own teaching materials for all modules on the courses. These consist of booklets and self-marking solutions for all past papers and assignments. These factors all contribute to our excellent results. All this means that Winstanley College, in our opinion, is the only place to study Mathematics.
A-level maths is a two year linear course in which students sit all examinations at the end of year 13. Students sit three 2 hour compulsory examination papers. One paper is made up of pure maths, one is made up of pure and mechanics and the third paper is made up of pure and statistics.

If Mathematics is your favourite subject and/or you want to study Mathematics/Engineering at university, you should seriously consider also studying Further Mathematics. Since Mathematics is such an extensive subject, it is not possible to cover all the topics in the single mathematics course. Studying Further Mathematics will enable you to cover more topics and extend your knowledge and understanding of Mathematics.
How is the Further Maths course structured?
In order to study Further Maths you must also study A-level Maths, it is also strongly encouraged that you study Further Maths as a fourth A-level. Studying Further Maths as a fourth A-level will mean that you are able to study two A-level subjects other than Maths and keep your career options open. You will sit all three A-level Maths examinations and in addition to this you will sit three 2 hour Further Maths examinations at the end of year 13. Two of the three Further Maths papers will be made up of further pure maths and the third is applied further maths.

When waking up in the morning to turning off the light at night, the background noise and foreground imagery of our daily lives is dominated by the presence of the mass media. Media Studies explores the relationships we form with the media and analyses how media products are made and how they operate.

Every student will have a different experience of music and in the first few weeks we will guide you carefully through what is expected. Being both an academic and practical subject, this course is an excellent way to maintain your current involvement in music. Classes are taught through practical exploration, theoretical analysis and group work. The main focus is very much on understanding different approaches to music, and we will explore a range of pieces, from the jazz, classical and musical theatre idioms. You will need to be Grade 5 or above on your first instrument and have taken Grade 5 theory or above.
Outside of class we provide supervision of rehearsals in the lead up to performance exams and there are academic tutorials for those wishing to take extra support with coursework and essay writing. I have enjoyed Music Performance as it has helped me develop my skills as a performer and has provided me with valuable experience that will prove useful should I pursue a career in music in the future.
I have been involved in a number of sports including Futsal as one of my subject choices and the college football team. I’ve also taken part in the Winbalm events created by the Music Department.
The teachers are both relaxed and constructive with their advice which provides an enjoyable experience whilst studying at college. In addition, the facilities provided by the college are of a high quality and beyond what I expected.
My advice to future students would be to study subjects which you are passionate about since college will be more enjoyable and you can have fun whilst learning. Getting a balance between academic and creative subjects will ease the pressure of studying and allows you to build a variety of skills.

The relaxed working environment and advanced facilities in the departments I wished to study in were what made me decide on Winstanley. I was particularly impressed with the music department in which I saw the advanced recording studios and classroom sequencing setups. It is a very welcoming college unlike others I looked at where I felt out of place.
MUSIC TECHNOLOGY (EXTENDED CERTIFICATE) What is the BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate in Music Technology? BTEC Music Technology is a one A-level equivalent carrying the same UCAS points as an A-level. This course can be studied alongside two other BTECs or A-levels.
Studio, and Acoustics. When tied with subjects such as Media or Film Studies, students have gone on to study Broadcasting for both Radio and TV. Some students progress straight into employment in areas such as Events Support at venues around the country. Organised talks at or from universities are offered each year to aid progression, and the study of the music industry as a whole forms part of the course.

These include an in depth look at the operation of the recording studio and the processes involved in creating a music product, focusing upon the equipment needed, suitable microphone techniques, professional studio procedures with a unit dedicated to mixing and mastering techniques.
To extend your musical experiences you will undoubtedly wish to take advantage of our trips and visits that have included visiting The British Music Experience and Ronnie Scott’s in London, along with trips to see the orchestra in Manchester. We also put on a range of concerts and musicals each year, and encourage students to get involved as sound engineers, performers, conductors and technicians. Recent productions have included ‘Joseph’, ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’, and ‘The Big Music Show’. Weekly ensembles cater for a wide range of musical tastes such as Rock, Jazz, Folk, Classical and Funk, and we actively encourage students to start their own groups in their favourite styles.
The course also covers the use of sequencing software, developing your skills to sequence both MIDI and audio material. You use DAW software to aid in music creation, production and arrangement through specific sequencing techniques. The course also features a unit devoted to live sound techniques, setting up and operating the equipment needed for live music events.

Philosophy has been defined as ‘thinking about thinking’. It probes deeply into ordinary opinions and convictions on almost every topic; morality, politics, psychology, physics, and religion, taking familiar ideas apart and investigating the issues they raise. If you enjoy thinking and reflecting on these kinds of questions, then Philosophy is for you. But this course does not just introduce these and other like topics to you, it aims to give you the skills of thinking logically and effectively about them. Learning to do philosophy is training in disciplined thinking. At Winstanley you will be encouraged to think clearly and precisely about the problems you are attempting to solve and concentrate your attention on critical reasoning. In particular, you learn to look at your own reasoning self-critically as you respond to the criticisms of others. Philosophy fosters intellectual maturity. Because the lessons at Winstanley involve active discussion, it is hoped that your confidence will increase as you acquire interpersonal skills of expressing yourself straightforwardly and listening to other people.

I have been involved in the LGBTQ+ Society, poetry competition and the creative writing photography project in which the creative writing students had their work displayed in a gallery at the old courts in Wigan. My career plans are hopefully to become a filmmaker or show runner. I hope to do this by taking media or film at university whilst trying to produce and finance my own short film to play at festivals.

I really enjoyed the flexibility of the topic choices for each unit of work, as I was able to pick a topic that projected my artistic voice and create multiple photoshoots based on architecture and street life. It was really interesting capturing these photoshoots as I regularly visited Liverpool and Manchester to obtain images from buildings and architectural structures. I also enjoy visiting the cities around the place I live, so going out to capture photoshoots is something I relish.

PHOTOGRAPHY Our Photography course is designed to allow your creativity to flourish through a brief or theme. This can span across fashion, portrait, landscape, the built environment, surface pattern, and texture: there is no end to the possible areas you can explore. Each individual’s project is tailored to incorporate personal ideas and interests and is devised with a specialist tutor in a supportive and enriching environment. Tutors have experience from industry and Fine Art backgrounds allowing you to access to a wealth of knowledge. Throughout the course you will be submersed in various technical aspects of photography, including traditional darkroom practice, studio lighting, shutter speeds, apertures and ‘Photoshop’. You will visualise your work in a sketchbook to show your creative and technical development which will certainly lead to a portfolio of work you can be proud of.
Underpinning your ideas will be the engagement with artists, photographers and designers who inspire your imagination to create unique, exciting works of art. This will enable you to explore beyond the surface of an image interrogating its meaning, aesthetic and worth. Through critical analysis you will make informed decisions within your personal work that will evidence your increasing knowledge and skill of appropriate photographic processes and concepts to truly fulfil creative potential.

High School: Cansfield A-levels studied: Physics, Chemistry, Maths Physics at A-level is slightly different from at GCSE. The biggest difference is that the A-level course is much more maths-based, in that just a handful of formulas can be used to solve a wide variety of problems. I feel like I already have a much better understanding of how and why things work as they do due to the knowledge gained in my Physics lessons. It has been really helpful to use mathematical concepts in a way that can be visualised, as it has improved my understanding of the course content.

I went on a Physics trip to The Christie Hospital in Manchester to learn about the basics of the role of physicists in cancer
treatment, as well as how treatments and technologies are continuing to develop. If you’re not sure what career you might want to go into in the future, make sure that the subjects that you take link together somehow. Perhaps you might want to look at what qualifications would be required for any jobs, apprenticeships or university courses that interest you. The World today would not be the same without Physics, from understanding our Universe to making leaps in technology that we use every day. Physics is a highly valued A-level that combines understanding with practical work and stretches and helps develop your mathematical skills. If you like to think beyond boundaries and have a mind that likes to investigate then Physics is the subject for you.
We deliver the OCR Advanced Level Physics course (Specification A). There is a smooth transition from GCSE and practical skills are threaded throughout the course, building both confidence and skill as you study. Topics you have already covered are expanded and the course will take you from the minuscule to infinity: studying the Physics of the nucleus to understanding the Big Bang. In the first module the foundations of Advanced Level Physics are laid, thinking about quantities, measurement and uncertainties. The second module explores concepts you will have studied at GCSE and digs deeper to enhance your understanding regarding forces, motion and momentum to name a few. You will also look at the Physics of materials and link this to improvements made in materials we use in everyday life. In the second year of the A-level, more amazing topics are studied including waves, astrophysics and medical Physics. Due to the ever changing political landscape in both the UK and America, lessons are always topical and informative. You find yourself developing your own, strong opinions on what’s going on in the world today. Not only this, but due to the debating nature of the lessons, you get the chance to air your opinion and hear those of your classmates. Lessons can be controversial, but that’s what makes them interesting and very hands on. When I chose to study Politics, I did not really know much about our political system or our Political parties at all. Now, having studied the course for two years I am off to Warwick University in September to study Politics and International Relations. The teachers in this department are willing to put in so much effort
to ensure you have all the right resources and information you need in order to achieve the highest possible grades you can. I am President of the Debating Society at College, and having organised for Andy Burnham MP to visit college, I was invited to shadow him in Westminster. Since then, I have been involved in his campaign to become the Mayor of Greater Manchester. I have attended a BBC debate with himself and the rest of the candidates, have done research for his manifesto, and was invited to attend the launch of his manifesto. Not only this, but I worked in his office every week in the run up to the election.

High School: Culcheth A-levels studied: Psychology, Biology, Maths, Chemistry Since starting the A-level Psychology course in September I have totally fallen in love with the subject! Throughout our first year we have covered topics like Memory, Attachment and Social Psychology which are all intriguingly omnipresent features of everyday life that we never really think about. The lessons are a perfect mixture of teaching, independent study and group work, but I particularly enjoy class discussions. Since I didn’t study the subject at GCSE, I didn’t really know what to expect from it, but I have found the transition into a totally new subject to be very smooth and manageable.

I completed a week-long work experience placement at
the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary over February half-term this year. During the placement it was really interesting to interact with the patients from a psychological/mental health perspective. As extracurricular enrichment in college I have opted to join the World Challenge expedition for my year group. In July 2018 we are spending a month in Ecuador and the Galapagos islands. It has been wonderful so far getting to know my teammates and we have become a really close group. The expedition really will be the adventure of a lifetime and I’m so lucky to be able to share that with some amazing people!

Psychology is a very exciting field of study, one that attempts to discover how the mind works and why we behave in particular ways in particular situations. Psychology pushes us towards greater self-knowledge by making us more aware of our behaviour and the motivations behind our behaviour, our actions and our personalities. The purpose of psychology as a science is to lead us to a better understanding of human behaviour for the greater good of all humans.

Psychologists have attempted to answer important questions such as: how does prejudice develop, why do people blindly follow malevolent authority, why do some people develop mental health problems and not others? Psychologists study a range of things that we may normally take for granted: such as how do we learn to be male or female, why do 3 month old babies seem happy in anyone’s company but only like familiar faces when they are 8 months old, when we are attracted to someone is this because we believe they are similar to us or do we like them because of what they can offer us?

I enjoyed Sociology because of the interesting and engaging topics. The topics are current to modern day society, and are taught well by enthusiastic teachers. The resources available to me were outstanding as they provided a lot of support and guidance. I was always assured that I could reach the full potential and excel on this course. I decided to come to Winstanley because from the open days, I could see that the members of staff were very welcoming and students were very friendly. Despite finding it hard to choose what A-levels I wanted to do, the college helped me through the process by offering their advice and support.
From this I was able to decide what A-levels I wanted to pursue and have Winstanley as my firm choice. I received all five offers from the universities on my choice, but have selected Chester University as my first choice. I have chosen to study Policing (Community Policing and Criminal Investigation), which will provide me with knowledge, understanding, skills, attitude and behaviour necessary to conduct impartial, fair and objective investigations, to allow my policing career to excel.
SOCIOLOGY What is Sociology?

Putting it simply, Sociology is the study of how society impacts or influences human behaviour. Sociology investigates what values, attitudes and rules we learn within society, how we learn them and what effect these rules and attitudes have on our behaviour.
We endeavour to give the best possible experience of Sociology by organising social research trips where students are given the opportunity to conduct their own ‘social attitude surveys’ on the public. This usually entails going to the nearest city centre and asking a range of people their attitudes towards education, the media or the police. As part of Unit 4 ‘Crime and Deviance ‘ students have also enjoyed the opportunity of going to a variety of prisons in the North West area as well as visiting Granada Studios and the ‘Jeremy Kyle Show’ as part of Unit 3 ‘Mass Media’.

TEXTILES If you love stitching, burning, gluing, cutting, slicing, shredding, knotting, folding and pleating then Textiles is the course for you. It is an exciting and varied course where you are encouraged to explore your creativity through a wide range of different textile processes and techniques. You begin the year working together on an exciting induction project where you are challenged to produce an entire dress made only from paper! You will then take part in a series of workshops where you are encouraged to be adventurous and innovative whilst working with materials and processes which include printmaking, stitch and metalwork. You will be continually encouraged to draw visual inspiration from everything and anything within the natural and man-made world! Lively and experimental drawing sessions will be delivered throughout the year to help you gain a greater understanding of surface and structure. You will develop your individual ideas through one-to-one tutorials with highly skilled and enthusiastic staff who will encourage you to explore the diverse nature of textile design.
Surface pattern - you will demonstrate the decorative use of surface, colour and pattern through creating textures and surfaces with stitch, collage and silk screen print. Constructed textiles – may include the use of knit, weave, felt, embroidery and appliqué and incorporate unconventional materials such as wood, metal and paper. Mixed media – this will enable you to produce innovative work in both two and three dimensional forms, which transcends the boundaries of either skills or materials.

Do you love acting? Have you enjoyed trips to the theatre? Want to write your own play? This course is an excellent way to maintain your current involvement in drama as the course is very performance based. The main focus is very much on acting and directing and we will explore a range of theatrical styles and approaches to acting.
Subject combinations The course combines very well indeed with a vast range of other subjects, (creative, humanities, languages), but can also provide a stimulating contrast to subjects such as the sciences.
Careers
To extend your theatrical experiences you will undoubtedly wish to take advantage of our workshop and theatre visits both here and abroad. Recent activities have included movement classes on Broadway in New York, acting workshops with directors from London drama schools, masterclasses with directors from The National Theatre and RSC and theatre visits across the country. The department was recently invited to perform at the Royal National Theatre (two years running); a very prestigious reward for our entry to the Connections Festival. We have an extensive programme of plays and musicals each year so that you can offer your services as a performer, theatre technician or backstage. We enter festivals, tutor you for auditions and support student-led Theatre Studies covers every projects. Facilities include a 200 seat studio theatre, practice rooms, recording studios and industryaspect of being a standard lighting and sound equipment (which we will performer; this includes happily train you to use).
