01. SITE - CONCRETE LAWN Concrete Lawn plays an important role on the construction of the public space, It presents special characteristics in the climate, action and shadow.

TEMPERATURE

SHADOW

In August, the sun is at the north of the Tropic of Cancer, thus the sunshine duration reduces. In winter, most part of the site is in low temperature, and it is easily to be rainy and windy. However, almost the whole are is under high temperature.

4

ACTION The intensities of the site depends on the time period during the day. There is a rapid increase at lunch period and class time.

CIRCULATION The large back section has little movement due to a hedge surrounding the site and blocking pedestrain flow. However, parts of the hedge could be cutted to allow more fluid movement around the site.

02. SPATIAL COMPOSITION

Frame and Grid

DESIGN CONCEPTS Inspired by the traditional instruments “Harp, repeatition and rotation are considered during the process. By using simple geometrics, the rotating wood sticks in the cube give us a sence of spatial. Different views can be seen at different angles.

03. LANDFORMING

PLAN

SECTION

Extrusion & Subtration

The design of the landform displays the key idea of extrusion and stepping. This large area creates open space for human activities, they can meet, chat and occupy the space.

04. ASSEMBLAGE MODEL

SECTION

PLAN

Compositional strategies: Disjunction

The disjunction technique, is a celebration of difference. It a new arrangment of different forms, contrast difference. The model conveys freedom and constrain. The disruption, rotating, uplifting elements show a collision with the irregular steps, make a strong contrast between two materials.

05. SPATIO - TEMPERAL NARRATIVE & STORY Narrative idea: OCCUPY Repeating, continuing, My brain is in a mess. Filled up, mesmerized, It is occupied by everything around me. Straight lines, stepping, Rotation, high rises, curving… All those are encompassing me, constraining me, luring me… I cannot breathe. I want to escape, To find a peaceful space without any control and intervention; Isolation Behind the high walls They confuse me, baffles me, hinders me… I am getting lost Helpless…

06. SUPERIMPOSITION COLLAGE

Plan Superimpostion is like a technique of layering. During the process, solid & void, geometry & freedom should be consideres. The plan is drawn from part of my superimposition. Its main purpose is to tracing the architecture frim the superimposition image.

07. EXPERIENCE COLLAGE Incorperate material: Metal Metal is experienced by its appearance. The incorperation of materiality, light and color creates an atmosphere of serious, dark and stressful.

Rough sketches of design idea

The form is developed from the superimposition plan. And narrative is the design brief for thewhole project. The key idea is to find a peaceful space in a busy world. To enhance the idea of finding, high walls are used as the main structure of the project, and the overwhelming form of the canopy is to express the idea of stressful and messy.

FULL SECTION DRAWING

Scale 1:100

People drawed in the full section represents the approximate height of the wall three times higher than normal people to give a sense of overwhelming.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT The scale of my orignal model is not apporiate for the concrete Lawn to experience the design, so I developed the major walls to create a more complex and narrow walk ways. People can occupy both the peaceful space and the walk paths. I also scale the plan of the model into a smaller value, thus the feeling of overwhelming can be felt as the walls are so close to each other, get a feeling of be trapped in the space.

Scale 1: 500

Inspiration: The space at the heart of this rusting steel memorial narrows to a width of just 80 centimetres, designed to make visitors empathise with the “feeling of oppression . This precedent is a good example of how the space will put stress of the people within the design. This is a monumental sculpture in Spain which supports my design idea of Large. The area my design occupies is not that big, but the spatial space it has is huge due to its unusual height.

16

The “Canopy The original Canopy in the design is less of concern as it just works not tightly connected to my Design idea. This is the new form i want to create to cover the first level of my model. This irregular shape and messy lines creates a feeling of crazy. As it covers the walls, people inside will be quite stressful because they are almost being trapped in the space, what they can do is to find the peaceful to escape or stay in the crazy world. In addition, rather than just place it in the walls, i prefer to make collision with walls. Parts of the space will be quite low and people will not get enough height space to walk. You will never know the condition for the next second. Thus a feeling of confusing and stressful are created and enhanced.

09. REFLECTION Designing is not just about the outcome, but also the process, how you create your idea, how these ideas are displayed in the model and also how the design is connected to the function and reality. As a designer, creavitity and patient are required. For myself, I am good at create new ideas but lack of the ability to establish it. And once I have an idea, it is hard for to develop it continuously, usually I am trapped in the original concepts. Also, the design concepts is the base of your design. Like the final model, I can have a clear idea about what I want to create, what I want to show in my model, but once it turns into the design, some thoughts will not be developed well. The final design of the model lacks the connection to the Concrete Lawn, as the model is large in scale, so the propotion of people and walls, spaces is incorrect in terms of what I want to express. For this reason, I change the size of my model, thus the proportion is much suitable for the site. All in all, after the whole semester’s learning, I learnt how to design a experience rather than a program in terms of the material, major concepts and also the creative forms.
