1.0 THREE RELATIONSHIPS Point/ line/ plane + Mass + Frame and infill. Those were the three main techtonics that need to be explored during the first half of the semester. Ideas and concepts were encouraged and developed during the process in order to explore the compositions. It was necessary to push beyong the limit in order to be more creative. By using precedents as inspiration, a deeper understanding of these concepts was taken in the design.
7
1.1 POINT/ LINE/ PLANE Point, line, plane are the basis for creating architecture form and design. Point is the basic for creating lines and planes. It is both the beginning and end of an element. Line is an combination of points along a vector. Connection between lines creates plane. It is the start point of creating a volume.
IN-CLASS EXPLORATION
8
PRECEDENTS It is designed as an open and inviting space. Planes and lines are conbined together, and the hall paneled in glass, creating a space open in four directions and create a welcome feeling of local community.
The architecture is associated with the lifestyle of living with the tree. The interior space is situated at different height and this kinds of floor plates allows the structure toserve many different functions. planes, lines and glass plates are used in the structure.
9
1.1 POINT/ LINE/ PLANE
10
DESIGN CONCEPT The model expresses the concept of Point/ Line / Plane in different ways. Dynamic and balance are the main focus in my work. Some of the light wood support the structure, some are unconnected with the plane. Therefore, a sense of floating of the plane is created. The holes in the plane allow sun penetrates into the model, which creates shadow. Balance and dynamic are explored between the lines and planes. As looking from the above, the lines can be seen as points, which interact with the ground and above ground spaces.
11
1.2 MASS Mass, as a solid volume, creates architectural atmosphere through a sense of weight and the materials used. The feeling of temperature, the echo of a sound, the entry of light in a dark space, they allow us to experience mass of an architecture.
IN-CLASS EXPLORATION
12
PRECEDENTS The precedents shown explore the concept of mass in terms of physical characteristics such as materiality and weight, as well as the atmosphere quality created by them. A mysterious and intriguing space is created through the interplay of light and texture within the architecture. The atmosphere is enhanced further through the darken interior and the mass of the materials. The limit light creates a sense of uncertainty and mystery.
13
1.2 MASS DESIGN CONCEPT Mass = Mysterious + Light + Gravity Mysterious = Hidden + Uncertainty + Darkness Light = Void + Shadow Gravity = Underground + Huge + Massive Hidden and Mysterious are the main theme of the techtonic. Therefore, the word "Cavity" is concerned in the design as it is underground. The ambience of uncertainty, being pressured and darkness are the qualities I want to achieve. The exploration of mass is experienced emtionally. The mass is felt by us when we are enveloped and surrounded. There, we feel the weight, compression and unknown of the space. The juxtaposition is made between the heavy rocks and the light-filled voids which bring light and shadow into the cavity. The atmosphere of the voids is established through the mixture of light and dark, as well as the rough texture, when people enter into this space, they will feel stressful.
14
15
1.3 FRAME & INFILL The framing elements are dynamic and ever changing. The functions are not only establishing the structure and separating the space, but also have the power to create the atmosphere in which people can occupy.
PRECEDENTS
16
The model in the left shows a composition of geometric frame form combined with irregular, random shape infill. Layers are pushed together and pulled apart. Part of the cube is cut by the infill, build a unique form. Another sculpture with light frame can be seen as a juxtaposition of frame and infill. The white regular form is the frame which supports the black soft fabric. However, in other aspects, the black fabric can be seen as the frame while the cubic structure surround it works as the infill. Ideas of organic versus linear and dynamic versus static can be employed in the model. Therefore, a fairly static grid frame with infill elements which are tilted or slightly off the grid can be created to break free from the static. In addition, exploring frame and infill to make them have dual roles in the system, which means frame can be worked as infill, while infill can also be functioned as frame, can increase the interest of the concept.
17
1.3 FRAME & INFILL
DESIGN CONCEPT The fundamental intent of my work is to make a composition between regular and rigid frame and dynamic infills. The frame is arranged rationally, while different infills are placed in the structure. Some parts of the infill are stretched out, and others are covered in the surface of the cube, which create different atmosphere – private & public, revealed & concealed. The threads in the cube create dynamic infill, and threads extended out of the cube create an antigravitational feeling against the cube’s weight. The cube and lines can be functioned both as frame and infill, they have dual roles in the system, and the twisted infill elements breaking free from static, forms dynamic and ever changing sense.

2.1 SITE ANALYSIS
22
SITE ANALYSIS Herring island contains an interesting mix of both public and isolation for the visitors. It is located in the urban area which is only 4 km away from CBD. However, it can only be accessed by boat. Therefore, it provides people a space to escape from the modern city and step into the nature. Due to the vegetation and topography, the west part of the island feels the most removed from traffic and noise form surrounding areas. Therefore, it is chosen for my design, as the vegetation and the slope will be the advantage of my design to be both concealed and exposed to the environment. In addition, the sight view from the location will also benefit my design as I want part of the structure to see the outside.

2.2 CONCEPTACLE
24
CONCEPTACLE I made a conceptacle model that explores the idea of transform from dark to light. The model represents different stages of the journey, from the beginning, purely dark, generally changed to light space. It also has a metaphor of secrets in shifting conditions of being concealed and revealed during the experience, which leads to an emotional change. The manipulation of light and darkness provokes people’s thinking and emotions.
25
2.3 CONCEPT AND SKETCH DESIGN PRECEDENTS
The architecture works as a memorial place for the World War. And the hole in the centre of the atrium inspired me in my own design of secret spaces. The light came into the structure from the top, which seems like hope. Secrets are exposed to the light. 26
The building is covered with grassy hill and surrounded by an untouched landscape of trees and wildlife. On the outside you can see nothing apart from the hole. This is the idea which inspired me a lot with the idea of secret. Everything is concealed underground, creates mystery and interesting experience. Idea of mass also inspires the interior atmosphere of the architecture because of the solid material.
The pavilion is concealed underground, nothing can be observed from the outside, therefore, a secret space is created. In addition, the space underground gives us a sense of unknown. It creates a good space for playing between underground and on ground space.
NARRATIVE Surrounded in the mystery Covered by beauty Hiddden in the absym Lies Taking as the covering sins How sorrowful it is Despair, sad, stress How could I Obtain a bless Take the slience I have been given Hold it close to my heart Share the secrets deep inside Confess the sins behind The light comes I am relieved
CONCEPT To think about the idea of keeping secrets, the word comes into my mind is sorrow. Because people are hiding secrets with each other, so sorrow feeling is created. However, people does not easily recognize these secrets as they are hidden in our heart. That leads to the idea of mysterious. Then, the concept of my design can be separated into two parts, one is that people who holding the secret will feel stressful and sorrow in the space, they want to find a space to release it, so the space is concealed underground, and no light enter the space. The second part of the concept is the happy feeling of people. Because they have confess themselves and relieved from the sins, light come into the space shows the reveal of the secrets as well as the emotional change from sad to happy.
27
SKETCH DESIGN The form of the conceptacle is expressive of the ideas of conflict between zones and changes between dark and light spaces. It also has the potential for the translations into architecture form by the direction of narrative and conceptacle.
28
29
2.4 DESIGN DEVELOPMENT I further explored the design of the space to show the contradiction of dark space and light space, and use these spaces separately to address the emotional changes before releasing the secrets and after. In the design, the light space is at the edge of the architecture, so it can be exposed to the environment to see the scenery on the riverside. Therefore, the design is strongly connected to the site location. Moreover, I improved the connection between above ground and underground spaces, therefore, it creates different feelings for people occupying these spaces.

2.5 FINAL DESIGN
The design explores the emotional change of people who experiencing the space. This idea comes from the techtonic Mass and how it surrounded the users inside the pavilion. The major part of the structure is mainly a narrow, dark journey of a person who carries secret, which leads to a relevant open space, shows the change of emotion from sorrow to relieved due to the expose of the secret. REFLECTION Throughout this semester’s work, I have learnt a lot about generating and rationalizing my design. The first part of this subject made me explore and think about the possibilities of forms by introducing 3 techtonics, and the second part of the course required us to apply what we’ve learnt from techtonic exercises to the design of secret pavilion, which enables us respect of our own work, and try to create design by using what we learnt before. Personally, what I find most useful for me is to think about things in an abstract way, therefore the possibilities are not limited. In addition, I learnt a lot in how to produce digital models and drawings by using Rhino, Auto cad, In design and also Photoshop, the process is quite interesting. However, I find that sometimes handmaking process can increase the physical interaction with the model and drawings, which helps me inform my design better. What I learnt over the course is that designers must push their ideas, searching for opportunities and potential development. Also, the course is not only pushing us to make a design, but also teaching us in a way of designer’s thinking, therefore, we can apply the skills we learnt into all the design processes to improve our own design. Overall, I feel I have gained a lot in this subject and Studio Earth is a truly engaging design experience.
