About Me

Growing up in Melbourne within a diverse community and sustainably focused environment has fostered my interest in thoughtful, responsive design that contributes positively to society and reflects the vibrant communities around it. I aspire to design spaces that evoke an emotional response through the experience of curated moments. Being in the outdoors brings me immense joy, awe and peacefulness, and I strive to bring this same feeling into my designs to create spaces that cause people to stop and enjoy the present moment and space around them. Through architecture, I want to create spaces that both inspire and comfort people, while also respecting and enhancing the priceless, natural world around us. I feel that travel is important as it causes you to reflect upon and become aware of the world around you with renewed curiosity. Travel allows you to observe different ways of living and the influence that this has on the architecture that societies build. There are always multiple ways to approach a problem and by combining different perspectives and keeping an open mind we are able to create unique responses for each situation.

2017 & 2018

Bachelor of Environments - Major Architecture University of Melbourne

Coy Yiontis Architects Student Intern In this small practice I have been exposed to much of the architectural process from initial consultation to media publications. This involved measuring up properties and creating the existing drawings and models. I have learnt much about the specification process and the client architect communications. I have been tasked with ensuring accuracy and clarity in the final documentation stage of projects. 2017 Irons McDuff Architects Student Intern I assisted in fixture and lighting selection and quoting. I worked on electrical plans and internal elevations ensuring accuracy on the specifications and drawings. All outdoor fixtures were chosen for endurance in the coastal environment. I participated in office meetings and learnt much about different stages of the architectural processes from this close-knit studio.

2014 & 2015 Kirbys Design Architects Student Intern In this studio I was given experience in measureups and producing existing pans, planning restrictions and had an introduction to contract administration. I was also responsible for photographing projects for publicity and marketing. 2016 & 2017 Niseko International Ski School Ski Instructor My job was to provide quality lessons to a range of people from toddlers to adult private lessons. My aim was to improve their skills in a safe environment while simultaneously helping them enjoy their holiday by exploring all that the mountain has to offer with an experience tailored to the students specific needs. The instructor role is much like the role of an architect where you are guiding your client to a shared goal through a personalised and planned process. 2015 & 2016 Document Corp Office Assistant I assisted my co-workers with anything they required such as proof reading an email or double checking their work. I was also tasked with indexing large quantities of files for clients into the online document storage program our company created. I was valued in my role for my teamwork skills, organisation and accuracy.

Woven Interaction University High School Extension

View from existing school to new extension

6

The brief for this studio was to design the extension to University High School to accommodate more students and facilitate new programs. The aim with this design is to reintegrate the school’s campus with the community by weaving it into the existing urban fabric. The form of the building was found by analysing the pattern of the weave from the existing school and the surrounding buildings and blending them the fill in the vast hole in the fabric. University High School considers itself to be a part of the larger local community through many of its actions but this is not reflected in its physical form. The new proposal for the school calls for a greater connection with the surrounding community through the program of shared sporting facilities with Melbourne University and opportunities for shared public and private use of space in the cafe, cinema and gym spaces. This extension offers a chance to reconnect the campus with the local city fabric.

2017 Parametric design and process Rhino, Grasshopper, InDesign Partner

12

In this subject we explored the potential of parametric design through the brief of designing a wall installation for a ballroom. We analysed the material performance of our chosen material, felt and used these findings to create a sculptural hanging piece. Through many prototypes we developed a grasshopper algorithm that responded to the unique flexing capabilities of felt and created a bespoke product that was functional and designed to fit the modern ballroom style. The

sculpture both reduced reverberated noise and filtered light and sight lines through the windows. The curves of the fabric reflect the flow and movement in a ballroom, with people dancing, dresses flowing and music and chatter rising and falling. Through parametric design we were able to imbue the elegance of a ballroom through controlled and organic manipulation in our final design.

Bulges of varying heights off a grid

Thin bulges of different heights off a curved surface

Controlled base lines through arrayed points on curves

Strips and bulges from base lines, too dramatic

Bulges more smooth, but ends too messy

Strips line up nicely, strips get too thin to be constructed

Many more bulges for more interest but

Material Testing

We tested the material to see the limit of the bending of the felt. In this test the felt curved nicely and had no kinks. We believe this is because the felt had been manipulated before the test so it could bend easily.

In this subject we studied the work of Tadao Ando to determine the formal ideas in his designs. The brief for our design was a public boathouse with a cafe, restaurant and rental facilities within the city. My design separates the functions of the boat

house into two separate wings that reflect the row of existing boathouses. My boat house enhances and expands the cultural hub of Melbourne by including four key things Melbourne is known for: the Yarra, sport, food and art.

Deconstruction Understanding Construction and Structural Systems

Facade of Building Model

24

This subject aimed to give us a thorough understanding of the construction of a building and the purpose of every element. We were each given a portion of an existing building and were asked to draw an axonometric with all the elements exposed. Building on this we then built

a model showing all of the details of the building down to the nails. This subject thoroughly went through foundations, structure, cladding and detailing. I was capable of identifying issues in hypothetical situations and providing solutions.

In this project we created a sleeping pod that responded to the personal space of the user. This project introduced me to the process of digital design and fabrication, resulting in a unique, purpose specific product. The design responded

to ideas of personal space by creating a strong protective external layer and a soft diffusing inner layer that create a comfortable place to nap on a university campus at a desk without feeling vulnerable.

Dunn House - Existing Plan In the Dunn House project I completed the site measure up with a partner, documenting everything necessary for me to draw up existing plans once we returned to the office.

On the Dark House project I completed the fixtures and fittings schedule and the materials schedule, ordered samples of materials that were required and ensured the codes on the drawings were correct. I was also tasked with inserting all the detail notes and codes on this Revit based project.

In the Seawind project I was responsible for completing the fixtures and fittings schedule. I was also given the task of proof-reading the drawings for accuracy and consistency. 31

A Place for Secrets Pavilion On and Within Herring Island

View through peel beams towards pavilion

32

Herring Island is an intriguing location hidden in a corner of the Yarra River, where adventure is abundant. This pavilion designed on the island takes the visitor on a journey off the paths on Herring Island, drawing them in with scattered timber beams strewn across the ground. The

beams turn into large timber fingers peeling up off the ground to reveal an undulating bridge. hidden under the ridge a concrete pavilion peels open the earth to offer a secret sanctuary to slow down, listen and pause from the world around you.
