Ip report The fonts I used are Helvetica Bold, Medium Condensed Italic and Light. I used several images that were not my own. My guacamole image was borrowed, as well as all the spreads that show Day of the Dead festivites. All of the images were under creative commons licenses and I was allowed to use them.
Project Brief In this project I randomly chose a region. I had to research this area and their type of food to make a cookbook. I got Mexico as my country. I then designed my cookbook to encompass Mexico and their cuisine.

Process Essay I really have enjoyed the cookbook project. I am glad that i was able to get Mexican cuisine because it is some of my favorite food. In the beginning I decided I wanted to hone in on Day of the Dead cuisine so that I could design for something more specific.
I decided on the size of my book because I knew I wanted a sugar skull on the front and I knew that it would look good with a tall narrow page. I then designed the endpages with the chili peppers, I think this works nicely because it ties in this Mexican cuisine and not so directly with Day of the Dead. I wanted it this way because I did not want to overdo Day of the Dead decorations or designs because I thought it would cheapen the design. I chose the colors I did throughout the cookbook based off of bright mexican decorations and designs I had seen. I also added a chalkboard texture over the pages to tie the rest of the cookbook in with the cover.
I always have a little trouble with selecting typefaces for projects but I am glad the way these turned out. I used Ariq for the headers and titles. I used Helvetica Light Oblique, Bold and Medium Condensed Oblique. I really think these variations came together nicely. I also decided to make all the ingredients and directions in white type. I thought the white gave it a fresh feeling. The headers are in various bright colors to connect to Mexican culture. My images arent very extravegent but I think that works with the brightness of the rest of the book.
For my How to I decided to show the reader how to cut adn pit and avocado. I decided to use the photographs. I chose the photographs becasue I felt that it went the best with the book. The drawings were too loose and the graphics were too detailed to flow with the rest of the design. The photographs had good color that went with the guacamole picture.
Another design element I added was the full spread images of the Day of the Dead celebrations. I saturated the images to make them brighter and richer. I think they are a nice pause the reader can take to appreciate the Mexican culture and tradition. I also think it was a good idea for those who do not know what the Day of the Dead festivities are.
This project was very interesting and challenging. It is strange how complicated type can get. I think this project helped me to establish a good grid and that simplicity can be good. I think sometimes I overthink how to set up my grids when sometimes the more simple solutions look the best. I hope to continue to strengthen my confidence with type and I think projects like this really help in that department.
